Bain salary ranges from $112,000 for undergraduate hires to more than $1,000,000 for Partners. Total first year compensation reaches roughly $139,000 for Associate Consultants and $285,000 for MBA hires. Bain & Company pays among the highest packages in consulting at every level.

In this guide I break down exactly what Bain pays at each level and entry path, in the United States and abroad. Having spent years at Bain as a Manager and interviewer, I have seen firsthand how compensation works inside the firm. I will also show you how Bain pay stacks up against McKinsey, BCG, and other top career paths.

But first, a quick heads up:

McKinsey, BCG, Bain, and other top firms accept less than 1% of applicants every year. If you want to triple your chances of landing interviews and 8x your chances of passing them, watch my free 40-minute training.

How Much Does Bain Pay at Each Level?

Bain pays between $112,000 and over $1,000,000 per year depending on your level within the firm. According to Bain's official job postings, first year Associate Consultants earn a base salary of $112,000, while post-MBA Consultants earn $192,000 in base pay. Total compensation at the Partner level can climb into the millions.

Bain compensation grows roughly 15% to 20% per year on average across the early levels. The Bain career levels run from Associate Consultant to Senior Partner, and each promotion brings a meaningful jump in both base pay and bonus potential.

What Is the Starting Salary at Bain?

Your starting salary at Bain depends entirely on the track you enter through. Undergraduate hires start at $112,000 base as Associate Consultants. MBA, PhD, and advanced degree hires start at $192,000 base as Consultants.

What Does a Bain Associate Consultant Earn?

The Bain Associate Consultant salary is $112,000 in base pay for first year hires in the United States. On top of that base, Associate Consultants receive a $5,000 signing bonus and a performance bonus of up to $22,500. Total first year compensation reaches roughly $139,000.

In my experience, almost every Associate Consultant earns some performance bonus in their first year. Top performers can earn close to the maximum, while average performers typically receive about 50% to 70% of it. Most people spend two to three years at this level before promotion to Consultant or leaving to pursue an MBA.

What Does a Post-MBA Consultant Earn?

The Bain consultant salary for MBA hires is $192,000 in base pay, according to Bain's official Consultant job posting. Bain adds a $30,000 signing bonus and a performance bonus of up to $63,000. That brings total maximum first year compensation to $285,000.

The base salary has held steady at $192,000 since 2023, matching the trend across all MBB firms that froze starting pay for MBA hires. Bain MBA hires also receive 25 days of paid time off in year one. That is more than McKinsey at 19 days and BCG at 15 days.

What Do PhD and Experienced Hires Earn?

PhD and advanced degree holders enter at the Consultant level and earn the same band as MBA hires, with a base of $192,000. Bain runs a dedicated program for advanced degree holders in non-business fields. Total compensation matches the MBA package.

Experienced hires from industry enter at a level that reflects their prior experience. Someone with five to seven years in private equity, corporate strategy, or another top strategy firm may enter at the Manager or Associate Partner level, with the corresponding salary. This is also the only group with real room to negotiate.

What Does Bain Pay Beyond Base Salary?

Cash from base and bonus is only part of the Bain package. For new hires, base plus bonus is roughly two-thirds of the total value. The rest comes from benefits that add tens of thousands of dollars per year.

Here are the main components Bain provides to US employees:

  • Signing bonus: $5,000 for undergraduate Associate Consultants and $30,000 for post-MBA Consultants, paid early in the first year.

  • Health insurance: 100% employer-paid medical, dental, and vision premiums for employees, according to Bain's careers page. Very few employers cover the full cost.

  • 401(k) plan: an annual employer contribution that increases with tenure, starting around 4.5% of salary for Associate Consultants and immediately vested, based on Glassdoor data.

  • Paid time off: 20 days for undergraduate hires and 25 days for MBA hires in year one, plus paid holidays and sick time.

  • Parental leave: 21 weeks of paid family leave for all parents in the US, covering births, adoptions, and surrogacy.

  • Relocation and housing: up to $5,000 in relocation for undergraduate hires and $8,000 to $15,000 for MBA hires, plus a $5,000 housing stipend.

Bain has been ranked the #1 Best Place to Work on Glassdoor a record seven times. According to Glassdoor reviews, 96% of Bain employees would recommend the firm to a friend. The mix of high pay, strong benefits, and supportive culture is a major reason Bain ranks so highly.

How Does Bain Salary Progress From Manager to Partner?

Bain salary increases sharply at each promotion above the Consultant level. According to Glassdoor and Levels.fyi data, total compensation roughly doubles between the Manager and Partner levels. The path from entry level to Partner typically takes 10 to 12 years.

What Do Bain Managers Earn?

Bain Managers earn a base salary of $220,000 to $250,000 with total compensation reaching $300,000 to $350,000. Managers run entire case teams, own the day-to-day client relationship, and deliver the engagement's objectives. Most consultants reach this level two to three years after their MBA.

This is also where many consultants leave for exit opportunities in private equity, corporate strategy, or tech. Based on an analysis of recent MBB departures, about 31% of exiting consultants move into individual contributor or consulting roles at other organizations.

What Do Bain Associate Partners and Partners Earn?

Bain Associate Partners, formerly called Principals, earn $375,000 to $500,000 in total compensation. At this level you manage multiple engagements and shift focus toward client development and selling new work. This is the hardest promotion bar at the firm.

Bain Partners are equity owners and earn total compensation starting around $700,000 and rising past $1,500,000. Senior Partners at the top of the firm can earn $1,000,000 to $5,000,000 or more. The majority of Partner pay comes from profit sharing rather than base salary.

These jumps are steep because Bain runs an up-or-out system, and the pyramid narrows fast above Manager. The consulting career path rewards the few who reach Partner with compensation most other professions never approach.

Why Do Salary Sites Show Bain Pay as Low as $103,000?

Some salary aggregators list the average Bain pay around $103,000, which badly understates what consultants actually earn. The reason is that these sites blend every Bain role into a single average. Support staff, administrative roles, and global offices all get mixed in with US consultants.

A US post-MBA Consultant earns $285,000 in total comp, yet an aggregator average might show half that. The averages also pull from job postings rather than verified offer letters, so they lag the real numbers by a year or more. Always anchor on Bain's official postings by level rather than a blended site-wide average.

Here is a quick test I give candidates. If a salary figure does not specify the level (Associate Consultant versus Consultant versus Manager), treat it as unreliable. Bain pay only makes sense one level at a time.

What Is the Bain Salary Outside the United States?

Bain salaries vary widely by country, with US offices paying the most globally. The role names stay consistent, but local pay reflects market rates and cost of living. Below are typical total compensation figures for three major markets.

How Does Bain Salary Compare to McKinsey and BCG?

Bain, McKinsey, and BCG pay within a narrow band at every level. At the MBA level, base salaries sit within $2,000 of each other and all three offer a $30,000 signing bonus. Bain leads on the maximum performance bonus and on paid time off.

The gaps are small enough that compensation alone should not drive your choice. McKinsey salary and BCG salary both track within a few percent of Bain at every level, so the cash difference rarely justifies picking one firm over another. In my experience coaching candidates, culture, office, and the people you meet during recruiting matter far more.

How Does Bain Pay Compare to Other Career Paths?

Bain offers among the highest starting packages available to recent graduates, but it is not the only high-paying path. Here is how Bain stacks up against investment banking, big tech, and Big 4 consulting for MBA hires.

Career Path

MBA Base Salary

Total First Year Comp

Avg. Weekly Hours

Bain (Consulting)

$192,000

$260,000 to $285,000

Big 4 Consulting

$150,000 to $175,000

$200,000 to $280,000

50 to 60

Investment banking pays more in raw first year comp, but the picture changes once you account for hours. On a per-hour basis the two are close. A Bain MBA Consultant at $285,000 over about 3,000 work hours earns roughly $95 per hour, while a banking analyst at $350,000 over about 3,750 hours earns roughly $93 per hour.

The long-term trajectory at Bain is the real draw. If you reach Partner within 10 to 12 years, your compensation will likely exceed $1,000,000 a year. Very few paths offer that growth with the same breadth of exit options.

Can You Negotiate Your Salary at Bain?

No, not at the standard entry levels. Bain uses a fixed compensation structure, so every Associate Consultant and Consultant in the same cohort and office receives the same base, signing bonus, and bonus target. Pay only varies through your performance rating, which drives your annual bonus.

Experienced hires entering at Manager level or above have limited room to negotiate. The most common levers are start date timing and compensation for a year-end bonus you would forfeit by leaving your current employer. Beyond that, the structure holds firm.
