The BDO consulting interview is a three to five stage process that includes a recruiter screen, competency interviews with a manager and senior manager, a case study or technical exercise, and a final conversation with a principal or partner. This guide covers every stage, the questions BDO actually asks, the eight skills the firm scores you against, and the ways the US and UK processes differ.

Key Takeaways

BDO runs a competency-driven process built around your background, your motivation for the specific business line you applied to, and a practical exercise, rather than the abstract strategy cases used at McKinsey, BCG, and Bain.

  • The US process usually runs recruiter screen, manager and senior manager interviews, then a principal round

  • The UK early careers process adds an online task-based assessment, a video interview, and a virtual assessment centre

  • Average time from application to decision is 25 days firmwide and 19 days for consultant roles, per August 2026 Glassdoor data

  • BDO publishes eight skills it scores candidates against, and almost nobody preparing for the interview reads them

  • Median total compensation at BDO USA is $117,138 as of August 2026, according to Levels.fyi

  • Picking your business line before you apply matters more at BDO than at almost any other firm

What Is the BDO Consulting Interview Process?

The BDO consulting interview process has three to five stages depending on your country and role. Experienced hires in the US typically face a recruiter screen, a round with a manager and senior manager, and a final principal interview. Students and early careers candidates add an online assessment, a recorded video interview, and an assessment centre.

Here is the full sequence most candidates go through:

  1. Online application: submit your resume and select a specific business line before the interview process begins

  2. Online assessment: quantitative and inductive reasoning tasks, used mainly for early careers pipelines

  3. Video interview: three to five recorded questions on your communication, your business line knowledge, and your fit

  4. Manager and senior manager interviews: competency questions plus technical questions specific to your practice

  5. Case study or group exercise: analyze a client scenario and present recommendations, sometimes as part of a team

  6. Final round: a conversation with a principal or partner focused on motivation, judgment, and long term fit

What does the BDO interview process look like in the US?

The US process is shorter and more conversational than the UK one. A recruiter reaches out or responds to your application, screens you for about 30 minutes, and passes you to the practice team. From there you usually sit two back-to-back interviews with a manager and a senior manager, then a final round with a principal.

Technical content varies by practice. Transaction advisory candidates get quality of earnings and accounting questions, forensics candidates get investigative scenarios, and management consulting candidates get operating model and change management scenarios. Your consulting resume drives most of these questions, so every bullet on it needs to survive follow-up.

One detail BDO states plainly on its careers site and that most candidates miss: the firm asks students to choose their business line before the interview process starts, so it can align them with the right interviewers. Applying broadly across Advisory, Assurance, and Tax signals indecision. Pick one, and build your entire story around it.

What does the BDO UK early careers process look like?

The UK graduate and school leaver process is far more structured. According to BDO UK's published application process, it runs in four stages: online application, an online task-based assessment measuring cognitive ability and decision-making, a recorded video interview, and a virtual assessment centre.

The assessment centre itself has two parts for graduates and school leavers. First is a case study presentation where you analyze information and present recommendations to assessors. Second is a group exercise where you work in a team on a business problem.

Interns and industrial placement candidates also sit an interview inside the virtual assessment centre. Graduates and school leavers finish with a face-to-face interview at the office they applied to. That final office interview is where motivation and self-awareness carry the most weight.

How long does the BDO interview process take?

Plan for three to four weeks in the US and six to ten weeks in the UK. Glassdoor data from August 2026 puts the average BDO hiring process at 25 days across 3,175 submitted interviews, and 19 days specifically for consultant roles across 11 submitted interviews. UK cycles run longer because assessment centres are scheduled in cohorts rather than individually.

The good news is that BDO tells candidates it responds to everyone who interviews. If a week passes with no word after your final round, email your recruiter directly rather than the interviewer.

Which BDO Practices Hire Consultants?

BDO's consulting work sits across four umbrellas: Advisory, BDO Digital, Industry Specialty Consulting, and Sustainability. Each has its own interviewers, its own technical bar, and its own recruiting calendar. Knowing which one you are targeting changes almost every answer you give.

Practice

Example teams

What interviews test

Advisory

Management Consulting, M&A and Transaction Advisory, Forensics and Investigations, Turnaround and Restructuring, Valuation

Financial statement fluency, deal or investigation scenarios, structured problem solving

BDO Digital

Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, Data Analytics, ERP, Cloud and Infrastructure, Digital Strategy

Platform experience, implementation stories, translating technical work for clients

Industry Specialty Consulting

Government Contracting, Higher Education, Life Sciences, Nonprofit, State and Local Government

Regulatory knowledge, sector fluency, evidence you understand that client type

People, Strategy and Solutions

Culture, communications, leadership, organizational effectiveness, change management

Change management judgment, stakeholder handling, communication under pressure

That last practice is newer than most candidates realize. BDO created People, Strategy and Solutions after adding 48 professionals from Blue Beyond Consulting, a combination the firm announced as part of its 2025 expansion of management consulting.

Does BDO Ask Case Interview Questions?

BDO asks case questions, but not the kind you have been practicing if you have only drilled McKinsey, BCG, and Bain style cases. There is no 40 minute market entry case with an interviewer feeding you data. Instead you get a client scenario tied to your practice area, and in the UK you get a formal case study presentation plus a group exercise.

This trips people up in both directions. Candidates who only prepared MBB-style case interview frameworks sound rehearsed and generic. Candidates who skipped case prep entirely ramble and never reach a recommendation.

What does the BDO case study presentation involve?

You receive a pack of information about a client, get preparation time, then present your analysis and recommendations to an assessor. The format resembles a written case interview, and assessors will push back on your points afterward.

Structure your presentation in four parts. Lead with your recommendation in the first 20 seconds, give two or three supporting reasons with numbers attached, name the biggest risk to your recommendation, and close with what you would do in the first 30 days. Assessors care more about whether you committed to an answer than whether your answer matched theirs.

Example: a manufacturing client with $180 million in revenue is losing money on 3 of its 8 product lines. A weak answer lists every possible cause. A strong answer says "I would exit two lines and reprice the third," shows the margin math behind it, and flags that exiting may breach a supply contract.

Comfort with case interview math matters here because you will be doing margin and breakeven calculations live. If you want to sharpen that fast, my case interview course covers structuring and case math in as little as 7 days.

How does the BDO group exercise work?

You are put in a breakout team with other candidates, given a business problem, and asked to reach a shared recommendation within about an hour. Assessors are watching how you behave, not who wins the argument. This is the closest thing BDO runs to a group case interview.

Having interviewed candidates in team settings at Bain, the people who score highest are almost never the loudest. They are the ones who bring a quiet candidate into the conversation, summarize where the group actually stands when it drifts, and watch the clock so the team lands on an answer.

Three behaviors sink candidates fast: talking over people, restating what someone already said to get airtime, and refusing to concede a point. Do the opposite of each and you will land in the top half of the room.

What Behavioral Questions Does BDO Ask?

BDO's interviews are heavily competency based, which means most questions ask for a specific past example rather than a hypothetical. The firm points candidates to the STAR method in its own interview guidance, so answers that follow that shape are what interviewers are trained to score.

Here are the questions candidates report most often across BDO's US and UK processes:

  • Walk me through your resume

  • Why BDO, and why this business line specifically

  • Tell me about a time you worked with a difficult team member

  • Describe a time you had to adapt quickly to a major change

  • You find a minor error in a financial statement that has already been approved. What do you do

  • Tell me about a time you handled competing deadlines

  • Do you prefer analytical work or writing and client communication

  • Where do you want to be in five years

Prepare five stories that you can flex across all of these rather than 20 shallow ones. Each story needs a number in it: a team size, a deadline, a dollar figure, a percentage. Opening with tell me about yourself is the most common first question, and a rambling two minute answer there sets a tone you spend the rest of the interview fighting.

If you want a full system for building and delivering these stories, my fit interview course covers 98% of the behavioral questions firms ask.

How should you answer "Why BDO?"

Generic answers about global reach and great culture get scored as filler. BDO gives you three specific hooks that almost no candidate uses, and any one of them separates you immediately.

The first is the employee stock ownership plan. BDO USA became the first large US accounting and advisory firm to establish an ESOP in 2023, which means employees hold a beneficial stake in the firm's performance. That is a real structural difference from every Big Four consulting competitor, and saying so shows you did homework.

The second is the middle market focus. BDO's clients are typically smaller than the Fortune 100 accounts that dominate larger firms, which means earlier client exposure and broader scope per engagement. The third is the firm's AI push: BDO reported that its internal Chat BDO platform has saved professionals over 1 million hours, and that more than half the firm now uses it.

The same logic applies to why consulting as a question. Tie your reason to something only BDO offers, not something true of any professional services firm.

What Does BDO Look For in Candidates?

BDO publishes the exact behaviors it assesses, and this is the single most underused preparation resource for this interview. The firm lists eight "skills for success" that its recruitment process is designed to measure.

  • Problem solving and decision-making: approaching challenges logically and spotting patterns

  • Focus and reasoning: staying attentive under pressure and applying insight effectively

  • Resilience and persistence: staying determined through setbacks and adapting to change

  • Collaboration and awareness: building relationships and contributing to team success

  • Communication: expressing ideas clearly while listening to others

  • Leadership potential: guiding discussions and stepping up when needed

  • Business awareness and client focus: understanding clients, markets, and how BDO creates value

  • Authenticity and learning agility: reflecting on experience and continually developing

Map one prepared story to each of the eight before your interview. When an interviewer asks a question you did not anticipate, you will still have a relevant example within reach. This exercise takes about two hours and it is the highest return preparation you can do for BDO specifically.

Notice what is missing from that list: technical mastery. BDO states outright that it does not expect you to have all the answers from day one, which tells you the bar is potential and mindset rather than encyclopedic knowledge.

How Much Does BDO Pay Consultants?

Median total compensation at BDO USA is $117,138 according to Levels.fyi as of August 2026. Pay sits below MBB and slightly below the Big Four, but above most regional firms, and the ESOP adds a component competitors do not offer.

Across all roles and levels, Glassdoor reported BDO US salaries spanning $49,921 to $294,638 based on 9,598 submissions as of August 2026. Transaction advisory and management consulting sit at the higher end of the consulting bands, while assurance sits lower.

How Hard Is It to Get a BDO Consulting Offer?

BDO is moderately difficult and meaningfully easier than MBB. Glassdoor users rated the overall BDO interview experience at 2.78 out of 5 for difficulty as of August 2026, with 69% describing the experience positively. Consultant candidates specifically rated difficulty at 2.9 out of 5 with 82% positive experiences.

Those numbers hide something important though. The interviews are not intellectually brutal, but the screening funnel is: online assessments in the UK graduate pipeline eliminate a large share of applicants before a human ever reads your answers. Most rejections happen before the interview, not during it.

BDO is also growing, which helps you. The firm reported fiscal 2025 revenue of $3.018 billion, more than 85 US offices, and over 14,000 professionals, with advisory up 3.2% and tax up 7.7%. Globally, BDO reported revenue of $11 billion for the year ending September 30, 2025, across more than 94,900 professionals in 870 offices.

If you are weighing similar firms, the RSM consulting interview is BDO's closest comparison in structure and difficulty. Both sit a clear tier below MBB and a small step below the Big Four on selectivity.

How Do You Prepare for the BDO Consulting Interview?

Give yourself three to four weeks. That is enough to build your stories, get comfortable with a case exercise, and research your target practice properly. Here are the seven things that move the needle most.

Tip #1: Pick your business line before you apply

BDO tells students directly to choose a business line before the interview process begins so it can route them to the right interviewers. This is not a formality. Candidates who say "I am open to anything" read as unfocused and get scored down on motivation.

Tip #2: Research one live client engagement in your practice

Read two or three of BDO's published insights or case studies from your target practice and be ready to reference one. Almost no candidate does this, and interviewers notice immediately.

Tip #3: Build stories against the eight published skills

Take the eight skills listed above and write one story for each. When a question comes at an angle you did not expect, you will have something ready rather than improvising a weak example.

Tip #4: Practice the case out loud, not on paper

The BDO case study is a presentation, so silent reading practice does not prepare you for it. Run at least five timed practice cases where you talk through your structure and recommendation aloud. Recording yourself once is uncomfortable and worth it.

Practicing against someone who has actually interviewed candidates gets you there faster. My interview coaching gives you 1-on-1 sessions with feedback after every case.

Tip #5: Treat the video interview as a real round

Recorded video interviews eliminate more candidates than any live round, and most people prepare for them the least. BDO's platform lets you check your camera, answer a practice question, and review your response before submitting. Use every one of those.

Tip #6: Know where the AI line sits

BDO explicitly permits AI for practicing video interview questions, researching the firm, and polishing your application draft. It explicitly prohibits AI during online task assessments, video interview responses, and assessment centre exercises, and warns that misuse can remove you from the process. Take that at face value.

Tip #7: Prepare three questions per interviewer

Ask about the practice's client mix, the interviewer's own path, and what separates a strong first year hire from an average one. Thoughtful questions to ask at the end of a consulting interview are one of the few remaining ways to change an interviewer's impression late.

Preparing for the BDO consulting interview comes down to specificity: pick one business line, build eight stories against the skills BDO publishes, and rehearse a case presentation out loud until you can lead with a recommendation instead of a framework. Do those three things and you will be ahead of most of the people you are competing against. If you only have time for one, make it the business line decision, because every other answer depends on it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the BDO consulting interview hard?

BDO is moderately difficult. Glassdoor users rated the overall BDO interview experience at 2.78 out of 5 for difficulty as of August 2026, and consultant candidates rated it 2.9 out of 5. The bar is lower than MBB on case solving but higher than most candidates expect on practice-specific knowledge.

Does BDO do case interviews?

BDO uses case exercises, but not the strategy-style cases used at MBB. In the US you are more likely to get a technical or scenario exercise tied to your practice area. In the UK early careers process, you complete a formal case study presentation and a group exercise at the virtual assessment centre.

How long does the BDO interview process take?

Roughly three to four weeks for most roles. Glassdoor data from August 2026 puts the average BDO hiring process at 25 days across 3,175 submitted interviews, and 19 days for consultant roles specifically. UK graduate cycles run longer because the assessment centre is scheduled in cohorts.

What questions does BDO ask in interviews?

Most BDO questions are competency based and motivation based. Expect walk me through your resume, why BDO, why this business line, tell me about a time you worked with a difficult teammate, and how you handle competing deadlines. Technical questions depend on the practice you applied to.

How much does BDO pay consultants?

Median total compensation at BDO USA is $117,138 according to Levels.fyi as of August 2026, with management consultants at a $89,000 median. Glassdoor puts entry level consultants at a $66,951 median and senior consultants at $119,007 as of August 2026.

Can you use AI to prepare for the BDO interview?

Yes for preparation, no during assessments. BDO explicitly allows AI for practicing video interview questions, researching the firm, and polishing an application draft. BDO prohibits AI during online task assessments, video interview responses, and assessment centre exercises, and says misuse can remove you from the process.
