The Big 4 consulting interview runs five stages at Deloitte, PwC, EY, and KPMG: an online application, an online assessment, a recruiter or video screen, a first round of case and behavioral interviews, and a final round with senior leaders. This guide breaks down every stage firm by firm, the questions you will actually face, and the prep plan that gets you past the round where most candidates are cut.

Key Takeaways

The Big 4 consulting interview is a five-stage process at Deloitte, PwC, EY, and KPMG that pairs online assessments with case and behavioral interviews across two to three live rounds.

  • Most candidates face 4 to 6 live interviews, and the case is where the majority get cut

  • Deloitte and PwC run candidate-led cases, so you set the structure instead of following the interviewer

  • KPMG replaces the standard final round with an assessment day for most early-career hires

  • Behavioral answers are scored against each firm's published values, not generic competencies

  • The strategy arms interview at a far higher case bar than core consulting practices

  • Expect 3 to 8 weeks from application to offer, with the assessment on the tightest clock

What Is the Big 4 Consulting Interview Process?

The Big 4 consulting interview process has five stages: an online application, an online assessment, a recruiter or recorded video screen, a first round of case and behavioral interviews, and a final round with senior managers, directors, or partners. Consulting and advisory roles include a case interview, while audit and tax roles usually do not.

Deloitte, PwC, EY, and KPMG all follow this shape, though the order and the naming shift by office and service line. Here is what each stage looks like in practice across the four firms.

Stage

What it is

Typical length

What is being scored

1

Online application

1 to 2 weeks to hear back

Academics, internships, and whether your reasons for the practice are specific

2

Online assessment

30 to 90 minutes

Numerical and verbal reasoning, situational judgment, and behavioral preferences

3

Recruiter call or recorded video

15 to 30 minutes

Motivation, communication, and one or two short behavioral answers

4

First round interviews

1 to 2 interviews of 30 to 60 minutes

Case structure, quantitative accuracy, and fit, usually with Consultants or Managers

5

Final round or assessment day

2 to 4 interviews, or a half day event

Harder cases, group and written exercises, and whether a partner would put you in front of a client

The stage that eliminates the most people is the first round of live interviews. Firms invite far more candidates to first round than they have final round slots, and the case is the filter they use to cut the field.

How long does the Big 4 consulting interview take from application to offer?

Plan for 3 to 8 weeks. Campus recruiting moves fastest because firms run compressed cycles against fixed deadlines, while experienced hiring can stretch past two months as senior interviewers juggle client work. The tightest deadline is not an interview at all: it is the online assessment, which several firms expect back within a few days of the invitation.

PwC states on its entry-level recruiting page that the assessment arrives by email within a few hours of your application, and that the application is not complete until you finish both. Candidates lose offers at this stage every year by treating the assessment as optional homework.

How Does the Interview Process Differ at Deloitte, PwC, EY, and KPMG?

The four firms diverge most on case format and on how the final round is structured. Deloitte and PwC's Strategy& practice both run candidate-led cases, EY-Parthenon leans on commercial due diligence content, and KPMG compresses its final stage into a single assessment day. Preparing for one of the big four consulting firms does not automatically prepare you for the other three.

What does the Deloitte consulting interview look like?

Deloitte runs two rounds. The first pairs one behavioral interview with one or two 30 to 45 minute cases, usually with Consultants or junior Managers. The final round adds a more senior case, deeper behavioral probing, and at many offices a one hour group case.

The Deloitte case interview is candidate-led, which means you propose the structure, ask for the data you want, and steer toward a recommendation without being walked through it. Your case content depends on your practice group: Strategy and Analytics, Technology, or Human Capital all draw from different client problems.

Behavioral answers at Deloitte are scored against the firm's five shared values: lead the way, serve with integrity, take care of each other, foster inclusion, and collaborate for measurable impact. Map two of your stories to each value before interview day.

What does the PwC consulting interview look like?

PwC splits into two very different tracks. Strategy&, its dedicated strategy practice, runs two rounds of roughly 45 minute interviews that each combine 10 to 15 minutes of fit with a full candidate-led case. Core PwC Consulting can run up to three rounds and mixes individual, written, and group case formats.

PwC is unusually transparent about how it scores you. The firm publishes The PwC Professional framework, built on two dimensions called Trusted Leadership and Distinctive Outcomes, and tells candidates outright to prepare examples against each one. Very few applicants actually do this, which makes it one of the cheapest edges available anywhere in the PwC process.

One rule catches people out. PwC states that using AI during the assessment and interview process is not permitted, so any tooling you lean on belongs in your prep, not your live rounds.

What does the EY consulting interview look like?

EY typically runs two to three rounds over 4 to 8 weeks. The screen combines a resume review with a numerical or logical reasoning assessment, and some offices add a short recorded video interview with motivation questions. Graduate candidates in several regions attend an Experience Day instead of a conventional final round.

The bar rises sharply if you are targeting the strategy arm. An EY case interview in core consulting stays operational and reasonably guided, while EY-Parthenon cases center on commercial due diligence, market attractiveness, and investment logic. Expect faster math and sharper financial intuition on the strategy side.

What does the KPMG consulting interview look like?

KPMG has the most distinctive format of the four. Its early-career process typically runs an application, two online assessments, a pre-recorded video interview, and then KPMG Launch Pad, an in-person half day assessment center. Launch Pad combines a group exercise, an analysis exercise, and a senior interview, and outcomes often arrive within two working days.

That structure means a large share of your evaluation happens before you speak to a human being. Two assessments and a recorded video all land ahead of the first live conversation. The KPMG case interview itself tends to be shorter and more guided than a Deloitte or Strategy& case, with more weight on market sizing and straightforward commercial reasoning.

How Do the Big 4 Strategy Arms Interview Differently?

The strategy arms interview at a materially higher bar than core consulting. Monitor Deloitte, Strategy&, EY-Parthenon, and KPMG's Global Strategy Group recruit separately, run their own case processes, and are benchmarked against McKinsey, BCG, and Bain rather than against their parent firm's advisory practice.

Three differences matter most for your prep:

  1. Harder cases: the EY-Parthenon case interview and its peers demand faster quantitative work and a genuine point of view, not a tidy framework

  2. More fit scrutiny: a Monitor Deloitte interview weights fit twice, once in a dedicated behavioral slot and again inside each case

  3. Extra exercises: written cases and group cases appear far more often in strategy arm final rounds than in core consulting

The fit scrutiny is not an accident. These groups know candidates treat them as a fallback after MBB, so the Strategy& case interview process is built to surface anyone who cannot explain why this practice specifically. A vague answer here sinks otherwise strong candidates.

Having coached hundreds of candidates through both paths, the mistake I see most often is preparing for the parent brand rather than the practice. Someone who prepared for a general Deloitte process and then walks into a Monitor Deloitte written case is in real trouble.

What Online Assessments Do the Big 4 Use?

All four firms screen with an online assessment before you speak to anyone live. The tests measure numerical reasoning, verbal reasoning, logical reasoning, situational judgment, and in some cases behavioral preferences through game-based exercises. Most take 30 to 90 minutes and carry a completion deadline of a few days.

The formats differ enough that generic practice is not much help:

  • Deloitte: the Deloitte online assessment uses immersive job-simulation scenarios with written, video, and multiple-choice responses

  • PwC: the assessment blends cognitive questions with situational judgment and arrives within hours of applying

  • EY: numerical, verbal, and situational judgment sections, often paired with a recorded video interview

  • KPMG: a timed skills test paired with a behavior-based test, both sat before the video round

Treat situational judgment sections as values tests, not logic puzzles. They reward the answer the firm's published values would endorse, which usually means escalating honestly, including colleagues, and protecting quality over speed.

What Case Interviews Should You Expect at the Big 4?

Big 4 consulting cases are 30 to 45 minute business problems where you structure the issue, request data, run the math, and deliver a recommendation. Compared with MBB, they are shorter, more operational, and more forgiving on ambiguity. They are still the single largest reason candidates get rejected.

What types of cases do the Big 4 ask?

Case topics track the work each practice actually sells. Core consulting leans operational, while the strategy arms lean commercial.

  • Profitability: margins have fallen and you need to isolate whether the driver sits in revenue or cost

  • Cost reduction and operations: supply chain, process, or workforce efficiency problems, common in core consulting

  • Market entry: whether a client should move into a new geography, segment, or product line

  • Due diligence: is this acquisition target attractive, and what would you pay, common at EY-Parthenon and Strategy&

  • Digital and technology transformation: cloud migration or AI adoption cases, increasingly common at Deloitte

A market sizing question often appears as a warm-up or as one branch of a larger case, especially at KPMG. Practice estimating from round numbers out loud so the interviewer can follow your logic.

Build your structures from first principles rather than memorizing templates. Interviewers spot recycled case interview frameworks immediately, and a generic profitability tree applied to a technology transformation case reads as a candidate who is pattern matching rather than thinking.

If you want to build case skills quickly, my case interview course walks you through the structuring and math techniques that work across all four firms in as little as 7 days.

What is the Big 4 group case interview?

The group case puts three to five candidates around a data packet and asks the team to present a recommendation. It appears in Deloitte final rounds, KPMG Launch Pad, EY-Parthenon final rounds, and some PwC assessment centers. Assessors watch how you behave, not how much airtime you take.

Here is the part almost nobody gets right. In my time interviewing at Bain, the candidates who scored best in group case interviews were the ones who made other people better: pulling in a quiet candidate, synthesizing two competing ideas, or catching an arithmetic error politely. The candidate who dominates the discussion almost always scores worse than they expect.

Aim for roughly your fair share of the talking. In a group of five, that is about 20% of the airtime, spent on contributions that move the group forward rather than restating what has already been said.

What is the written case interview?

A written case interview hands you a packet of 15 to 25 pages of charts, tables, and notes, gives you 30 to 60 minutes alone with it, and then asks you to present a recommendation to a panel. Strategy&, Monitor Deloitte, and EY-Parthenon all use this format in final rounds.

The trap is trying to read everything. You will not have time, and the packet is deliberately padded with material that does not change the answer. Skim for the decision the client faces, find the three or four exhibits that bear on it, and spend your remaining minutes building a defensible recommendation.

What Behavioral Questions Do the Big 4 Ask?

Big 4 behavioral questions probe motivation, leadership, teamwork, conflict, and failure, and they carry more weight than most candidates assume. Consulting interviews at Deloitte split time roughly evenly between behavioral questions and cases. Fit shows up at every stage, from the recruiter screen through the partner conversation.

The questions you should have ready:

  • Walk me through your resume

  • Why consulting, and why this firm specifically

  • Tell me about a time you led a team through a difficult situation

  • Describe a time you disagreed with a manager or teammate

  • Tell me about a failure and what you changed afterward

  • How do you handle competing client deadlines

  • What questions do you have for me

What values does each firm score you against?

This is where the Big 4 differ sharply from MBB. Each firm publishes the behavioral standard it hires against, and interviewers score you against that specific rubric rather than a generic competency list.

My fit interview course covers 98% of the behavioral questions these firms ask in a few hours, including firm-specific answer templates.

How Do You Prepare for a Big 4 Consulting Interview?

Six to eight weeks is the right amount of prep for most candidates with no prior case experience. Two weeks is enough only if you have already cased extensively for MBB. The sequence below is what I recommend to every candidate I coach into these firms.

  1. Weeks 1 to 2: learn case structure and drill mental math daily until you can handle percentages and large-number division without hesitating

  2. Week 3: write and rehearse eight to ten behavioral stories, then map each one to your target firm's published values

  3. Weeks 4 to 5: run 15 to 20 live practice cases with a partner, focusing on candidate-led formats if you are targeting Deloitte or a strategy arm

  4. Week 6: practice the exercises specific to your firm, including a group case, a written case, or an assessment day simulation

  5. Final week: research your practice group, prepare three sharp questions for your interviewers, and do two full mock rounds end to end

Your consulting resume deserves attention before any of this, since none of the prep matters if you never clear the screen. Firms read it again in the interview itself, and "walk me through your resume" is the most reliable opening question at all four.

Drill your case interview math separately from full cases. Arithmetic errors under time pressure are the most common technical failure I see, and they are also the easiest to fix with 15 minutes a day.

If you want direct feedback on your cases, my 1-on-1 coaching pairs you with a former Bain interviewer who will score you the way an actual interviewer does.

What Are the Top Tips for Passing a Big 4 Consulting Interview?

These are the adjustments that move candidates from borderline to offer most reliably.

Tip #1: Name the practice, not the firm

"Why Deloitte" answers that would work equally well for PwC, EY, or KPMG get filtered immediately. Name the service line, an industry vertical, and ideally a conversation you had with someone in that group.

Tip #2: Take the online assessment seriously and take it early

Several firms screen out candidates purely on assessment scores before a human reads the resume. Complete it in one uninterrupted sitting, in a quiet room, with scratch paper ready.

Tip #3: Practice candidate-led cases specifically

Interviewer-led practice will not prepare you for Deloitte or a strategy arm. In a candidate-led case you must ask for data proactively, and candidates who wait to be prompted stall out within ten minutes.

Tip #4: Say your number before you say your method

When you finish a calculation, lead with the answer and its implication, then explain how you got there. Interviewers are scoring client communication, and clients want the conclusion first.

Tip #5: In group exercises, lift the team

Bring in the quietest person, build on someone else's idea by name, and volunteer for a piece of the presentation. Assessors are explicitly watching for inclusive collaboration, and it is scored.

Tip #6: Prepare questions that only an insider would ask

Ask about the practice's current client mix, how staffing works in your first year, or how the team is adapting to AI in delivery. Avoid compensation questions until you have an offer in hand.

What Mistakes Get Candidates Rejected?

Most rejections trace back to a small number of avoidable errors rather than a lack of raw ability.

  • Generic firm motivation: an answer that could apply to any of the four reads as a candidate applying everywhere

  • Forcing a memorized framework: a structure that does not fit the problem is worse than a simple structure that does

  • Silent math: working through numbers without narrating leaves the interviewer unable to score your reasoning

  • Weak behavioral stories: candidates who pass on case skill and still get dinged almost always have vague, unquantified examples

  • Dominating the group case: talking the most is consistently mistaken for leadership by candidates and never by assessors

  • Skipping the recommendation: running out of time without a clear answer wastes everything that came before it

One more worth naming: underestimating the firm. The MBB vs Big 4 consulting gap is real on prestige and pay, but it is much smaller on interview rigor than candidates assume, and the strategy arms have effectively closed it.

The Big 4 consulting interview rewards candidates who prepare for a specific practice rather than a brand, and who treat the case as the round that decides everything. Start running timed, candidate-led practice cases now, because that is the stage where the field gets cut.

Frequently Asked Questions

How hard is the Big 4 consulting interview?

The Big 4 consulting interview is harder than most candidates expect but easier than MBB. Core consulting cases tend to be shorter, more operational, and more heavily guided than McKinsey, BCG, or Bain cases. The strategy arms are the exception, since Monitor Deloitte, Strategy&, and EY-Parthenon run a case bar close to MBB level.

How many rounds are in a Big 4 consulting interview?

Most Big 4 consulting candidates go through two live rounds after the online assessment, though some offices run three. A first round of one to two interviews is followed by a final round of two to three interviews with senior managers, directors, or partners. Early-career candidates in the UK often replace the final round with a single assessment day.

Do all Big 4 consulting interviews include a case interview?

No. Audit, tax, and assurance roles at the Big 4 are usually behavioral only. PwC states that the majority of its Advisory positions require a case interview, and the same holds across consulting and advisory roles at Deloitte, EY, and KPMG. Technology and human capital consulting roles sometimes swap the case for a scenario or technical discussion.

How long does the Big 4 consulting interview process take?

Plan for 3 to 8 weeks from application to offer, with campus recruiting on the faster end and experienced hiring on the slower end. The online assessment is usually the tightest deadline, since firms expect it back within a few days. Offers after an assessment day can arrive within two working days.

Which Big 4 firm has the hardest interview?

The hardest Big 4 interviews are at the strategy arms rather than at any single firm. EY-Parthenon and Strategy& are widely regarded as the most demanding because of their case difficulty and low intake. Among core consulting practices, KPMG's assessment day format is the most unusual and catches the most candidates off guard.

Can you use AI to prepare for a Big 4 consulting interview?

You can use AI to prepare, but not during the process itself. PwC US states on its entry-level recruiting page that the use of AI during the assessment and interview process is not permitted. Use AI for practice cases and story drafting before interview day, then rely entirely on your own thinking once the live process begins.
