Boutique Consulting Salary: What 25+ Firms Actually Pay
Author: Taylor Warfield, Former Bain Manager and interviewer
Last Updated: September 1, 2026
Boutique consulting salary ranges from roughly $92,500 for undergraduate analysts to $190,000 in base pay for MBA hires at the highest paying firms, with total first-year packages passing $280,000 at the top. The averages published on salary aggregator sites are badly wrong for this question, so this article gives you the real numbers by firm, level, and specialty.

Key Takeaways
Boutique consulting pay splits into two worlds: elite boutiques that match or beat MBB, and everything else, which pays far less.
- Elite boutiques pay MBA hires $160,000 to $190,000 base, per GMAC's 2026 data on 25 firms
- Analysis Group leads the field at $190,000 base and over $280,000 total first-year pay
- Undergraduate analysts at elite boutiques earn roughly $90,000 to $110,000 base
- The $58,067 average on aggregator sites is drawn from four salaries and should be ignored
- Specialty drives pay: economic, life sciences, and restructuring boutiques pay well above social impact firms
- Boutique offers are more negotiable than MBB offers because pay bands are set firm by firm, not class by class
What Is the Average Boutique Consulting Salary?
Boutique consulting salary depends almost entirely on the tier of firm. Elite boutiques pay undergraduate analysts $92,500 to $110,000 in base salary and MBA hires $160,000 to $190,000, with total first-year compensation reaching $280,000. Smaller regional and generalist boutiques start consultants closer to $60,000 to $90,000.
That spread is why a single average number is useless here. A "boutique" can mean a 40 person strategy shop that only interviews Harvard and Wharton candidates, or a 12 person regional operations firm that hires locally. The two pay nothing alike, and the top boutique consulting firms sit at the very top of the range.
Here is what the market looks like at each entry point, based on 2026 compensation data.

Why Do Salary Sites Show Boutique Consulting Salaries Under $60,000?
Because those pages are measuring the wrong thing. Glassdoor's page for the job title "Boutique Consultant" reported an average of $58,067 as of June 2026, and that number was built on exactly four submitted salaries. Four.
Almost nobody at a real strategy boutique carries that job title. The one employer Glassdoor actually lists on that page is Ulta Beauty, where a boutique consultant is a cosmetics sales associate earning a median of $37,000.
Strategy boutiques hire analysts, associates, associate consultants, and consultants at named firms. None of those people show up in a search for "boutique consultant," which is exactly why the average looks so low.
The distortion gets worse elsewhere. One large job board listed the average hourly pay for "boutique consulting" at $11.09 in August 2026. Another salary database treats "Boutique Consulting Firm" as if it were an actual employer, a company with one to five staff headquartered in Brooklyn.
I bring this up because candidates act on these numbers. I have coached people who turned down a life sciences boutique screen because a search told them the role paid $58,000, when the firm's actual analyst base was near $95,000. Any credible management consultant salary figure has to be tied to a named firm and a named level, not to a category label.
Use firm-specific data instead. Government wage filings, named firm offer data, and Glassdoor pages for specific employers with hundreds of submissions all hold up. Category averages do not.
How Much Do Boutique Consulting Firms Pay MBA Hires?
MBA hires at the top boutiques earn $160,000 to $190,000 in base salary. GMAC's June 2026 roundup identified 25 boutique firms paying incoming MBAs at least $160,000 base, and the best of them push total first-year compensation past $280,000 once performance and signing bonuses land.

Two figures on that table deserve a second look. Alvarez & Marsal's performance bonus of up to $87,500 is the largest among the boutiques GMAC tracked, and both AlixPartners and Galt & Company set a $60,000 floor on the performance bonus with no ceiling above it. Mars & Co pays $170,000 base but can clear $220,000 in year one, and Maine Point adds half a percent of the profit on every project you staff.
The signing bonus is where boutiques compete hardest. Analysis Group's $45,000 is the largest on the list, and a consulting signing bonus at this level is usually the most flexible line in the whole offer.
How Much Do Boutique Consulting Firms Pay Undergraduate Hires?
Elite boutiques pay undergraduate analysts roughly $90,000 to $110,000 in base salary. The cleanest evidence comes from Labor Condition Application filings with the US Department of Labor, which record the actual offered wage for every sponsored hire rather than a self-reported estimate.
Analysis Group filed 91 wage applications in fiscal 2025. The pattern is unusually clean because the firm pays a flat national rate by level.

The $92,500 analyst rate held identical across Boston, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas, and Denver, with only Washington DC filings coming in higher at $97,500. That national flat rate is standard practice at elite boutiques and matches how MBB sets pay.
Other firms land in the same band once bonuses are counted. As of August 2026, Glassdoor reports a median base of $122,000 and median total pay of $148,000 for L.E.K. Consulting associate consultants across 224 submissions, and a median base of $105,000 with $117,000 total for Cornerstone Research analysts across 614 submissions.
Those medians sit above the filed base rates because they include people two and three years in. Summer programs follow the same scale, so a consulting intern salary at an elite boutique tracks the full-time rate on a prorated basis.
Is Boutique Consulting Salary Higher or Lower Than MBB?
At the very top, boutiques match MBB and occasionally beat it. Analysis Group and Oliver Wyman both pay $190,000 base to MBA hires against McKinsey's $192,000, and Analysis Group's total package of more than $280,000 clears McKinsey's $267,000 and BCG's $267,500.

Up to $287,500 |
MBB figures come from GMAC's 2026 McKinsey consultant salary data, updated July 2026. Boutique figures are maximums, so the totals assume a top performance rating.
Two caveats matter before you read that table as a tie. Boutique totals rely on hitting the maximum bonus, and in my experience most first-year consultants land at 50% to 80% of the cap rather than the full number. MBB salaries also grow faster after year one, roughly 10% to 20% annually with larger jumps at promotion.
Drop below the elite tier and the gap opens up fast. Pay at tier 2 consulting firms and mid-sized boutiques falls to $150,000 to $170,000 base for post-MBA consultants and $75,000 to $95,000 for pre-MBA associates. Below that, small generalist shops start people in the $60,000 to $90,000 range.
How Does Boutique Consulting Salary Vary by Specialty?
Specialty is the single biggest predictor of boutique pay after firm tier. What a boutique can charge per hour flows almost directly into what it pays, and firms selling scarce technical expertise to well funded clients pay the most.

Social impact and nonprofit |
The Bridgespan Group |
$62,000 to $85,000 |
$95,000 to $130,000 |
Analyst and MBA figures are drawn from Department of Labor wage filings, GMAC's 2026 boutique data, and firm-level Glassdoor pages with 100 or more submissions.
The restructuring premium is real and worth understanding. Turnaround work is billed at crisis rates on short timelines, and Alvarez & Marsal reflects that with the largest performance bonus on GMAC's entire boutique list.
At the other end, social impact firms pay a genuine discount. Glassdoor's page for The Bridgespan Group shows an average consultant at $127,118 across 122 submissions as of April 2026, with associate consultant total pay running $62,000 to $112,000. Anyone weighing an economic consulting career path against a social impact role should expect a six figure gap over the first five years.
Life sciences boutiques sit in an interesting middle. Base pay trails restructuring, but the firms hire heavily from PhD and MD programs, which means a science background can be worth more here than an MBA is elsewhere. A healthcare consulting career path through a life sciences boutique also opens biotech and pharma exits that generalist firms cannot match.
How Does Boutique Consulting Pay Grow From Analyst to Partner?
Boutique pay roughly doubles at each of the first two promotions, then shifts from salary to profit sharing at the top. The progression below reflects Tier 2 and boutique bands from the University of Miami Toppel Career Center's 2026 breakdown, cross-checked against Department of Labor filings.
Level |
Base salary |
Bonus |
Total |
Analyst or associate |
$75,000 to $95,000 |
Up to $20,000 |
Up to $115,000 |
Consultant |
$150,000 to $170,000 |
Up to $30,000 |
Up to $230,000 |
Manager or project leader |
$200,000 to $220,000 |
$50,000 to $80,000 |
$250,000 to $300,000 |
Principal |
$250,000 to $300,000 |
$100,000 to $200,000 |
$250,000 to $500,000 |
Partner |
$300,000 to $400,000 |
$200,000 to $400,000 |
$500,000 to $800,000 |
Director |
$400,000 to $600,000 |
$400,000 to $600,000 |
$800,000 to $1.2M |
Notice where the curve bends. Below principal, base salary carries most of your pay, so the number on your offer letter is close to the number you take home. Above principal, profit sharing takes over, and consulting partner salary at a boutique swings hard with a single strong or weak year.
That volatility cuts both ways. A boutique partner owns a much larger slice of a much smaller profit pool, which means one lost anchor client hits your compensation in a way it never would at a global firm. Promotion also tends to arrive faster than the standard consulting promotion timeline because there are fewer people between you and the top.
What Is Included in a Boutique Consulting Compensation Package?
A boutique offer has more moving parts than an MBB offer, and the parts vary far more between firms. Here is what shows up in a typical package.
- Base salary: the guaranteed number, usually flat across all US offices at elite boutiques
- Performance bonus: ranges from $25,000 at L.E.K. to $87,500 at Alvarez & Marsal, and is uncapped at AlixPartners
- Signing bonus: $10,000 to $45,000, and the most negotiable line in the offer
- Profit sharing: more common than most candidates expect, with L.E.K. associate consultants reporting a median $11,000 profit share and Maine Point paying 0.5% of profit per project
- Relocation: $5,000 to $7,500 at firms that offer it, with OC&C at the top of that range
- Tuition support: ZS Associates reimburses second year MBA tuition for returning interns, and Innosight offers unlimited PTO instead
The uncapped bonus deserves attention when you compare offers. A $180,000 base with a $60,000 floor and no ceiling is a structurally different bet than a $190,000 base with a hard $36,100 cap, even though the headline numbers look close. Understanding the full consulting bonus structure at each firm matters more at boutiques than anywhere else in the industry.
How Should You Evaluate a Boutique Consulting Offer?
Over more than 10 years helping candidates land offers at top consulting firms, I have watched people take and reject boutique offers for the wrong reasons. These five checks separate a good boutique offer from a mediocre one.
Tip #1: Ask what percentage of consultants hit the maximum bonus
Every boutique quotes the bonus cap. Very few volunteer the distribution behind it, and a $60,000 maximum that 10% of the class reaches is worth far less than a $35,000 maximum that 70% reaches.
Ask the recruiter directly what share of first-year consultants earned above 80% of target last cycle. A firm that cannot answer is telling you something.
Tip #2: Divide the offer by realistic hours
A $180,000 base at 70 hours a week pays less per hour than a $150,000 base at 50 hours. Boutiques vary wildly here because staffing models differ so much, and a lean firm with no bench often runs hotter than a global firm.
Ask second-year consultants, not partners, what a normal week looks like during a live case.
Tip #3: Check whether the base is national or office-specific
Elite boutiques usually pay one national rate, which is why Analysis Group filed the same $92,500 analyst salary in Dallas and San Francisco. Mid-sized boutiques often adjust by office, and a $10,000 to $20,000 gap between a New York and a regional office is common.
That distinction changes your real purchasing power more than most candidates expect.
Tip #4: Negotiate the signing bonus, not the base
Base salary at a boutique is usually tied to an internal band the recruiter cannot break without setting a precedent for the whole class. The signing bonus sits outside that band and moves much more easily.
Come in with a competing written offer, name the specific gap, and ask whether the signing bonus or relocation stipend is flexible. Learning how to negotiate a consulting offer is worth tens of thousands of dollars for a conversation that takes 20 minutes.
Tip #5: Do not assume the interview bar is lower
Candidates routinely treat boutiques as a safety option and then get rejected. Firms paying $190,000 base run case interviews every bit as demanding as MBB, and some economic and life sciences boutiques add technical screens on top.
If you want to learn case interviews quickly, my case interview course walks you through proven strategies in as little as 7 days.
The right way to read boutique consulting salary data is firm by firm and level by level, never as a category average. Pull the specific numbers for the specific firms you are targeting, compare total packages rather than base salaries, and then put your energy into the case prep that actually gets you the offer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do boutique consulting firms pay less than MBB?
At the elite end, no. Analysis Group and Oliver Wyman both pay MBA hires $190,000 in base salary against $192,000 at McKinsey, and Analysis Group's total first-year package passes $280,000, which beats McKinsey's $267,000 and BCG's $267,500 according to GMAC's 2026 figures. Below the elite tier the gap is real, and mid-sized generalist boutiques often start consultants in the $60,000 to $90,000 range.
What is the highest paying boutique consulting firm?
Analysis Group tops GMAC's 2026 ranking of boutique firms for MBA pay. It offers a $190,000 base salary, a performance bonus up to $47,500, and a $45,000 signing bonus, putting total first-year compensation above $280,000. Alvarez & Marsal offers the largest single performance bonus among boutiques at up to $87,500, and AlixPartners and Galt & Company both set an uncapped performance bonus floor of $60,000.
How much do boutique consulting firms pay out of undergrad?
Elite boutiques pay undergraduate analysts roughly $90,000 to $110,000 in base salary. US Department of Labor wage filings show Analysis Group paying analysts $92,500 across Boston, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas, and Denver, rising to $110,000 at the senior analyst level. Glassdoor medians as of August 2026 put L.E.K. Consulting associate consultants at $122,000 base and Cornerstone Research analysts at $105,000 base.
Why does Glassdoor say boutique consultants earn only $58,000?
That figure comes from Glassdoor's page for the literal job title "Boutique Consultant," which as of June 2026 was built on just four submitted salaries. The only employer listed on that page is Ulta Beauty, where the role is a cosmetics sales job with a $37,000 median. Almost nobody at a real strategy boutique carries that title, so the number tells you nothing about consulting pay.
Is boutique consulting pay negotiable?
More negotiable than at MBB, yes. Large firms run standardized pay bands across an entire class, while boutiques set offers case by case and can move on base salary, signing bonus, and start date. Your strongest position comes from a competing written offer and from any specialized background the firm bills at a premium, such as a science PhD at a life sciences boutique.
How much do boutique consulting partners make?
Partner total compensation at Tier 2 and boutique firms generally runs $500,000 to $800,000, with directors and senior partners reaching $800,000 to $1.2 million. Most of that is profit sharing rather than base salary, so the number swings with firm performance in a way an MBB partner's more diversified profit pool does not.
