Consulting Firm Directory: 100+ Firms by Tier and Type
Author: Taylor Warfield, Former Bain Manager and interviewer
Last Updated: October 21, 2026
A consulting firm directory is a categorized list of consulting firms organized by tier, practice area, and industry so you can decide where to apply instead of guessing. This directory covers more than 100 firms across nine categories, explains how each group recruits, and shows you how to turn a long list into a short target list that produces interviews.
Before reading on:
Most candidates struggle to land interviews and even fewer turn them into offers. Watch my free training to learn how to triple your chances of landing interviews and increase your chances of receiving an offer by 8x.
Key Takeaways
A useful consulting firm directory sorts firms by tier and practice area, because those two variables determine how competitive a firm is and what its interviews actually test.
- More than 100 firms across nine categories, from MBB down to specialized boutiques
- Tier predicts how hard a firm is to get into, practice area predicts what the interview tests
- Apply to 8 to 12 firms spread across at least two tiers instead of only the famous three
- BCG reports 33,500 employees across offices in over 100 cities, while Bain has offices in 67 cities
- Deloitte alone reported $70.5 billion in FY2025 revenue, nearly five times BCG's $14.4 billion
- Most candidates lose out by applying too narrowly, not by interviewing badly
What Is a Consulting Firm Directory and How Should You Use It?
A consulting firm directory is a categorized list of consulting firms showing what each firm does, who it hires, and how it recruits. Candidates use one to build a target application list. The strongest directories sort firms by tier and practice area rather than alphabetically, because those two categories predict how hard a firm is to get into and what its interviews test.
Most firm directories online are built for the wrong reader. They exist to help companies shop for a consultant, which is why they list email formats and service lines but say nothing about entry titles, recruiting timelines, or case format.
In my years interviewing and recruiting at Bain, the candidates who ran the best process almost never had the longest list. They had roughly 10 firms they could give a real reason for, and that showed up in every fit answer they gave.
Use this directory in two passes. First, filter by practice area to find the kind of problems you actually want to work on. Then filter by tier so your list is not stacked entirely at the top.
How Are Consulting Firms Organized by Tier?
Consulting firms fall into four commonly used tiers: MBB, the Big 4 strategy arms, tier 2 firms, and boutiques. Tier is shorthand for brand, project mix, and selectivity. It is the single best predictor of how competitive a firm's process will be.
Tier |
Example firms |
Typical undergraduate title |
How competitive |
MBB |
McKinsey, BCG, Bain |
Business Analyst, Associate Consultant |
Roughly 1% acceptance rate |
Big 4 strategy arms |
Monitor Deloitte, Strategy&, EY-Parthenon, KPMG Strategy |
Business Analyst, Associate |
Very competitive, larger class sizes |
Tier 2 |
Kearney, Oliver Wyman, L.E.K. Consulting, Roland Berger, AlixPartners |
Analyst, Associate, Business Analyst |
Comparable case bar, fewer applicants |
Boutiques |
Putnam Associates, Analysis Group, ClearView Healthcare Partners, Altman Solon |
Analyst, Associate, Research Analyst |
Easier to get an interview, tests industry depth |
Implementation and technology |
Accenture, Slalom, West Monroe, Capgemini Invent, Infosys Consulting |
Analyst, Consultant |
Largest hiring volume of any group |
Tier is a sorting tool, not a ranking of career quality. A specialized boutique can pay more, hand you better clients, and produce stronger consulting exit opportunities than a large generalist firm.
Every group in this directory except the pure economic research shops runs some form of case interview. If you want to get case ready fast, my case interview course walks you through proven strategies in as little as 7 days.
Which Firms Make Up MBB?
MBB refers to McKinsey, BCG, and Bain, the three firms that sit at the top of nearly every consulting ranking. All three run partner led case interviews, recruit heavily from a defined target school list, and extend offers to roughly 1% of applicants.
The scale differences between them are real. BCG reports 33,500 employees and $14.4 billion in annual revenue across offices in more than 100 cities and over 50 countries. Bain runs a deliberately tighter network of offices in 67 cities across 40 countries, and McKinsey's own leadership pages describe offices in more than 130 cities across over 65 countries.
According to a former McKinsey Global Managing Partner, the firm receives roughly 200,000 applications a year and extends about 2,000 offers. That is an acceptance rate near 1%, tighter than any Ivy League undergraduate program.
Targeting MBB consulting and nothing else is the most common way candidates end a recruiting cycle with zero offers instead of three. The math is simple: three applications at 1% each is not a strategy.
Which Firms Count as the Big 4 Consulting Arms?
The Big 4 are Deloitte, PwC, EY, and KPMG, and each runs a strategy brand that recruits separately from the broader firm. Deloitte has Monitor Deloitte, PwC has Strategy&, EY has EY-Parthenon, and KPMG has KPMG Strategy.
Scale here dwarfs the strategy firms. Deloitte reported $70.5 billion in aggregate global revenue for FY2025 and more than 470,000 people across over 150 countries and territories.
Accenture sits in a category of its own. It posted $69.7 billion in revenue for the fiscal year ending August 31, 2025, and it hires across strategy, technology, and operations at a volume no strategy firm comes close to matching.
Adding big four consulting to your list is the fastest way to broaden a set of applications that started with only three names. The strategy arms use case interviews that look very similar to MBB cases, so the preparation carries over almost entirely.
Which Firms Are Considered Tier 2?
Tier 2 covers large, well known firms that compete directly with MBB on specific projects without matching their overall brand. Kearney, Oliver Wyman, L.E.K. Consulting, Roland Berger, Strategy&, Monitor Deloitte, EY-Parthenon, AlixPartners, and Alvarez & Marsal all sit in this group.
This is where most successful candidates actually land. Oliver Wyman runs a global network of 7,000 colleagues, and its financial services work rivals anything the top three do in banking and insurance.
Interviews at tier 2 consulting firms are usually as demanding as MBB interviews, and the case style is often more industry specific. Expect a pricing case at a pricing firm and a bank profitability case at a financial services firm.
What Counts as a Boutique Consulting Firm?
A boutique is a smaller firm built around one industry, one function, or one type of problem. Boutiques typically have fewer than 1,000 consultants and recruit at a handful of schools or entirely through referrals and direct applications.
The trade off is depth versus brand recognition. You will work on harder problems inside your chosen field, and you will spend the rest of your career explaining the firm to people outside it.
Many boutique consulting firms pay at or above MBB levels because their work is specialized and their teams stay lean. Private equity due diligence shops and life sciences boutiques are the clearest examples.
Which Consulting Firms Should You Apply To by Practice Area?
Sort by practice area once you know what kind of problems you want to work on. The nine tables below cover more than 100 firms, and each group recruits on its own timeline with its own interview format.
What Are the Top Strategy and General Management Consulting Firms?
Generalist strategy firms work on growth, market entry, pricing, and corporate portfolio questions across every industry. This is the group that runs classic case interviews, and it is where the target school effect is strongest.

Three of these categories get ruled out for the wrong reason more often than any others. If quantitative research appeals to you more than client facing strategy, economic consulting gives you a path that rewards a PhD instead of penalizing one.
If you want scale and mission together, public sector consulting firms hire large classes every year with far less travel than commercial work. The clearance requirement is the main filter.
Candidates with a science or clinical background should look hardest at the healthcare consulting firms in the table above. Several of them hire more PhDs than MBAs in a given year.
How Many Consulting Firms Should You Apply To?
Apply to 8 to 12 firms in a single recruiting cycle, spread across at least two tiers. Fewer than 8 leaves your entire outcome riding on a handful of interview days. More than 15 spreads your networking and case preparation so thin that every application gets weaker.
The distribution matters more than the count. A workable split is 3 MBB, 3 tier 2, 3 boutiques in your target industry, and 2 Big 4 strategy arms.
Candidates ask me how many consulting firms to apply to more than almost any other recruiting question. The honest answer is that the number matters far less than the spread across tiers.
Every one of those applications hits a resume screen first, and that is where most processes quietly die. My resume review and editing service rebuilds your resume with unlimited revisions and a 24 hour turnaround.
How Do You Build a Target Firm List From a Consulting Firm Directory?
Work through the directory in six steps rather than scanning it top to bottom. The goal is to end with a list of 10 firms you can defend in a fit interview, not a spreadsheet of 60 names you will never contact.
-
Pick your practice area first: choose the one or two tables above that match the problems you want to work on
-
Pull every firm in that category: start wide, because you will cut aggressively in the next four steps
-
Filter by office location: a firm that does not staff your target city is not a real option, no matter how much you like the brand
-
Check each deadline against the consulting recruiting timeline: boutiques and tier 2 firms often open and close months apart from MBB
-
Split the survivors by tier: if more than half your list is MBB, you have built a lottery ticket rather than a plan
- Find one human at each firm: a single alum or referral contact per firm turns a cold application into a warm one
Step six is the one candidates skip, and it is the one that changes outcomes. A referral at a 300 person boutique carries far more weight than a referral at a firm hiring 2,000 people a year.
What Mistakes Do Candidates Make When Using a Consulting Firm Directory?
There are four mistakes I saw over and over while recruiting at Bain, and every one of them is fixable in an afternoon. Each costs candidates interviews before a single case is ever discussed.
Mistake #1: Sorting by prestige instead of practice area
A list built purely on brand ranking produces generic answers to the question of why you want this firm. Interviewers hear the difference immediately.
Sort by the work first, then check the tier spread. A candidate who says they want pricing work and applied to three pricing specialists sounds credible. A candidate who applied to the top eight firms on a ranking list does not.
Mistake #2: Ignoring which offices actually staff the work
Firms staff regionally, and a practice that is enormous in one office can be nonexistent in another. Applying to a firm's smallest office for its rarest practice is the quietest way to get rejected.
Check the office page and the partner list before you apply. If no partner in that office works on your stated interest, pick a different office or a different firm.
Mistake #3: Missing deadlines at the smaller firms
Large firms publish deadlines loudly and run structured campus cycles. Boutiques often post a single role, fill it, and close it within three weeks.
Set a calendar reminder for every boutique on your list and check its careers page weekly. This one habit is worth more than another month of case practice for most candidates.
Mistake #4: Reusing one story across every tier
The reason you want MBB is not the reason you want a life sciences boutique. Sending the same motivation to both signals that you have not thought about either.
Write one specific reason per firm before you apply, and tie it to something on that firm's own website. Two sentences per firm is enough, and it takes about 20 minutes for a list of 10.
Treat this consulting firm directory as a filter rather than a checklist. Pick the 10 firms you can give a real reason for, confirm each one's deadline and staffing office, and start preparing for the case format that group actually uses. The most useful thing you can do this week is cut your list down, not grow it.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a consulting firm directory used for?
Candidates use a consulting firm directory to build a target application list. A good directory shows what each firm does, which entry points it recruits for, and how competitive its process is, so you can filter hundreds of firms down to the 8 to 12 worth applying to. Directories built for companies shopping for a consultant list service lines and contact details instead, which is not what a job seeker needs.
What are the four tiers of consulting firms?
The four commonly used tiers are MBB, the Big 4 strategy arms, tier 2 firms, and boutiques. MBB refers to McKinsey, BCG, and Bain, while the Big 4 strategy arms are Monitor Deloitte, Strategy&, EY-Parthenon, and KPMG Strategy. Tier 2 covers large firms such as Kearney, Oliver Wyman, L.E.K. Consulting, and Roland Berger, and boutiques are smaller firms built around one industry or one function.
How many consulting firms should I apply to?
Apply to 8 to 12 firms in a single recruiting cycle, spread across at least two tiers. Applying to fewer than 8 leaves your entire outcome riding on a handful of interview days. Applying to more than 15 spreads your networking and case preparation so thin that the quality of every application drops.
Are boutique consulting firms easier to get into than MBB?
Boutique firms are usually easier to get an interview at, but not always easier to get an offer from. They receive far fewer applications than MBB and often run no formal campus recruiting, so a strong referral or direct application can land you a first round. The interviews are frequently harder in one specific way, because boutiques test industry knowledge that generalist candidates have not built.
How do I find consulting firms that work in a specific industry?
Start with the practice area tables above, then confirm by checking each firm's client work and published research on its own website. A firm that runs a dedicated practice page, publishes research, and lists partners under that industry is genuinely staffed there. A firm that only mentions the industry in a marketing list usually staffs those projects out of a generalist pool.
