A consulting interview thank you email is a short, professional message you send to your interviewer within 24 hours of your case interview or fit interview. It reinforces your interest in the firm, shows professionalism, and keeps you top of mind during the decision process.
In this guide, you will find exact templates and examples for first round, final round, and partner interviews at McKinsey, BCG, Bain, and other consulting firms. You will also learn what to include, what to avoid, and how to handle situations where you do not have the interviewer’s email address.
But first, a quick heads up:
McKinsey, BCG, Bain, and other top firms accept less than 1% of applicants every year. If you want to triple your chances of landing interviews and 8x your chances of passing them, watch my free 40-minute training.
Should You Send a Thank You Email After a Consulting Interview?
Yes, you should send a thank you email after every consulting interview. It will not single-handedly get you an offer, but it demonstrates the kind of professionalism and follow-through that consulting firms value.
According to a CareerBuilder survey, roughly 15% of hiring managers say they would not hire someone who failed to send a post-interview follow-up, even if that person were otherwise a strong fit. Another 32% said they would still consider the candidate, but would think less of them.
Here is the honest truth about thank you emails at MBB firms: most interviewers at McKinsey, BCG, and Bain submit their scores within 5 to 10 minutes of the interview ending. Your thank you email will not change their evaluation of your case performance.
However, thank you emails serve a different purpose. They build a professional relationship with the interviewer that can pay off in several ways. If you are a borderline candidate and the decision is close, a thoughtful follow-up can tip the scale. If you do not get the offer this time around, a genuine connection makes it easier to reapply in a future cycle.
In my experience as a former Bain interviewer, I received thank you emails from fewer than 10% of candidates. The ones I did receive always stood out because they were so rare. Sending one puts you in a small minority of candidates who go the extra step.
When Should You Send Your Thank You Email?
Send your consulting interview thank you email on the same day as your interview or within 24 hours. This keeps the conversation fresh in the interviewer’s mind and shows that you are organized and proactive.
Do not send it within the first hour after the interview. Give yourself at least two hours so the email feels thoughtful rather than rushed. If your interview ends in the late afternoon, sending the email that evening or first thing the next morning is perfectly fine.
If you had multiple back-to-back interviews, such as during a final round consulting interview, wait until all of your interviews are complete before sending any emails. You do not want an interviewer receiving your message while you are still interviewing with their colleague down the hall.
How Do You Get the Interviewer’s Email Address?
Getting the interviewer’s contact information is one of the biggest hurdles candidates face. At MBB firms, you are not always given the interviewer’s name in advance, and business cards are not always exchanged.
Here are the best ways to find your interviewer’s email:
- Ask at the end of the interview. When the interviewer asks if you have any final questions to ask, you can say: “Thank you so much for your time. Would you mind sharing your email so I can follow up?” This is professional and expected.
- Use the firm’s email format. Most consulting firms follow a standard email format. McKinsey uses [email protected]. BCG uses [email protected]. Bain uses [email protected]. If you know the interviewer’s full name, you can usually piece together their email address.
- Check LinkedIn. If you cannot find their email, connect with them on LinkedIn and send a short thank you message there. This is a perfectly acceptable alternative.
- Email the recruiter or HR contact. If you cannot find the interviewer’s direct email, send your thank you note to the recruiter who coordinated your interview and ask them to pass along your thanks. This is better than not sending anything at all.
What Should You Include in a Consulting Interview Thank You Email?
A strong consulting interview thank you email is short, specific, and genuine. It should be no longer than 5 to 7 sentences. Think of it as a 100 to 150 word message, not a full letter.
What Subject Line Should You Use?
Your subject line should be clear and simple. The interviewer should immediately know why you are emailing. Here are three examples that work well for consulting interviews:
- “Thank You – [Your Name]”
- “Great Speaking With You Today”
- “Thank You for Your Time, [Interviewer’s First Name]”
Avoid overly formal subject lines like “Post-Interview Follow-Up Regarding Associate Consultant Position.” This reads like a form letter and will not stand out.
How Should You Open the Email?
Address the interviewer by name using “Hi [First Name]” or “Dear [First Name].” Start by thanking them for their time and the conversation. Keep this to one sentence.
What Should the Body of the Email Say?
The body is where you make your email stand out from every other generic thank you note. Reference something specific from your conversation. This could be a detail from the case interview, a topic you discussed during the fit portion, or something the interviewer shared about their experience at the firm.
For example, if the interviewer mentioned a project they worked on in the healthcare sector, reference that. If you discussed the firm’s culture of mentorship, mention how that resonated with you. The goal is to jog the interviewer’s memory so they can immediately connect your email to your face.
Do not use this section to re-argue your case performance or correct a mistake you made. According to former McKinsey interviewers, attempting to fix your case answers in a follow-up email does not help and can come across as insecure.
How Should You Close the Email?
Restate your interest in the firm and the role in one sentence. Close with “Best regards,” “Thank you again,” or “Warm regards” followed by your full name and contact information. Do not include your entire resume or LinkedIn profile link unless the interviewer specifically asked for additional materials.

What Are the Most Common Mistakes in Consulting Thank You Emails?
Even a well-intentioned thank you email can hurt you if it contains common mistakes. Having reviewed hundreds of candidate follow-ups during my time at Bain, here are the errors I saw most frequently.
- Being too generic. Emails that say nothing more than “Thank you for your time, I enjoyed learning about the firm” do not help you stand out. Every candidate can write that sentence. Reference something specific to your conversation.
- Making it too long. Your email should be 5 to 7 sentences. Anything longer feels like a second cover letter. Interviewers are busy consultants with full inboxes. Respect their time.
- Trying to correct your case performance. Do not use the thank you email to re-analyze the case or explain what you should have done differently. This signals a lack of confidence and will not change your evaluation.
- Sending identical emails to multiple interviewers. If you interviewed with two or three people on the same day, they may compare notes. Sending the exact same email to each person looks lazy and undermines the personal touch you are trying to create.
- Forgetting to proofread. A typo or misspelled interviewer name in your thank you email leaves a worse impression than not sending one at all. Triple check before you hit send.
- Sending it too late. An email that arrives three or four days after the interview loses its impact. At MBB firms, hiring decisions are often made within 24 to 48 hours of the interview. By day three, the decision is likely already final.
Should You Send Separate Emails to Each Interviewer?
Yes, send a separate, personalized thank you email to every interviewer. During consulting final round interviews, you may meet with three or more people in a single day. Each email should reference a unique detail from that specific conversation.
This matters because interviewers at the same firm frequently compare notes on candidates. If two interviewers receive the same copy-paste email, it signals that you are going through the motions rather than genuinely engaging with each person.
A simple way to differentiate each email is to reference the case you worked on together or a specific topic from the behavioral portion of the interview. Even one unique sentence per email is enough to make each message feel personal.
What If You Don’t Hear Back After Sending a Thank You Email?
Do not read into it. The vast majority of consulting interviewers do not reply to thank you emails. Based on conversations with current and former MBB interviewers, response rates to candidate thank you emails are estimated at around 20% to 30%.
There are many reasons an interviewer might not respond. They may be staffed on a client project with back-to-back meetings. They may have a personal policy of not engaging with candidates outside of the formal process. Or they may have simply read your email, appreciated it, and moved on.
A lack of reply does not indicate a negative outcome. Similarly, receiving a reply does not guarantee you will get an offer. According to discussions among consulting candidates, the correlation between getting a reply and receiving an offer is weak at best.
If you have not heard anything about next steps from the firm within one week, it is appropriate to send a brief follow-up email to the recruiter asking about the timeline. Keep this follow-up to two or three sentences. Do not send a second thank you email to the interviewer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should you send a handwritten thank you note after a consulting interview?
A handwritten note is a nice touch, but email is the standard and preferred method in consulting. The hiring timeline at firms like McKinsey, BCG, and Bain moves too fast for a handwritten note to arrive in time. Decisions are often made within 24 to 48 hours of the interview. Stick with email to ensure your message is received before the decision is made.
Is it desperate to send a thank you email after a consulting interview?
Not at all. Sending a thank you email is considered standard professional etiquette across industries. In consulting, where communication and relationship management are core skills, a well-written follow-up demonstrates exactly the kind of behavior firms look for in their consultants. What does look desperate is sending multiple follow-up emails or writing a 500-word essay about why you deserve the job.
Should you send a thank you email after a phone screen?
Yes, but keep it even shorter. A phone screen with a recruiter is less formal than a case interview, so a three to four sentence email thanking them for the overview and expressing your excitement about next steps is sufficient. This also keeps you on the recruiter’s radar as a proactive, polished candidate.
Can a thank you email change the outcome of your consulting interview?
In most cases, no. Your case interview performance is the primary factor in whether you advance. However, for borderline candidates where the decision could go either way, a thoughtful follow-up email can be a small positive signal. More importantly, it builds a professional connection that is valuable regardless of the outcome. If you reapply in a future recruiting cycle, having a positive relationship with a consultant at the firm gives you an advantage.
What if you interviewed with someone you already know?
If you already have a relationship with the interviewer through networking, a school connection, or a previous interaction, your thank you email can be slightly more casual. Reference the existing relationship naturally. For example: “Hi Sarah, it was great to see you again today. I really enjoyed our conversation about the operations practice.” The same rules apply: keep it short, specific, and genuine.
