Consulting Relocation Bonus: Amounts by Firm (2026)

Author: Taylor Warfield, Former Bain Manager and interviewer

Consulting relocation bonuses at top firms typically range from $2,000 to $16,000, depending on the firm, your role level, and how far you are moving. McKinsey offers the most generous relocation support among MBB firms at up to $10,000, while Bain provides up to $16,000 for long-distance moves. This guide breaks down the exact relocation bonus at every major consulting firm, explains how taxes and clawback clauses work, and shows you how to negotiate a higher amount.

But first, a quick heads up:

McKinsey, BCG, Bain, and other top firms accept less than 1% of applicants every year. If you want to triple your chances of landing interviews and 8x your chances of passing them, watch my free 40-minute training.

What Is a Consulting Relocation Bonus?

A consulting relocation bonus is a one-time payment that a consulting firm gives you to help cover the cost of moving to your assigned office city. It is separate from your signing bonus, base salary, and performance bonus. According to CapRelo's 2026 data, most U.S. domestic relocation packages for professionals fall between $15,000 and $75,000, but consulting firms at the entry level typically offer a more modest lump sum in the $2,000 to $16,000 range.

Most consulting firms pay the relocation bonus as a lump sum, meaning you receive the cash and decide how to spend it. You can use it for hiring movers, booking flights, covering a security deposit on a new apartment, or anything else related to your move. A few firms, like BCG, have historically offered interest-free loans instead of or in addition to a lump sum.

The relocation bonus is not a guaranteed part of every offer. Whether you receive one depends on firm policy, your entry level, and whether you actually need to relocate. If you already live near your assigned office, most firms will not offer a relocation bonus. For a complete breakdown of consulting compensation at every level, see our consulting career path and salary guide.

How Much Is the McKinsey Relocation Bonus?

McKinsey offers up to $10,000 for relocation, which is the highest fixed amount among MBB firms. According to data reported by Poets & Quants for the 2026 cycle, this amount applies to both undergraduate Business Analysts and MBA-level Associates. McKinsey also provides up to $10,000 in housing allowance on top of the relocation bonus, effectively doubling the support available for new hires who need to move.

For a full breakdown of McKinsey compensation at every level, see our McKinsey salary guide.

How Much Is the BCG Relocation Bonus?

BCG's relocation support ranges from $500 to $8,000, depending on the distance and cost of your move. BCG has also historically offered interest-free relocation loans to new hires, which is a unique structure among major consulting firms. This means you may receive a loan to cover upfront moving costs and repay it gradually with no interest charges.

BCG's relocation amount is lower than McKinsey's $10,000 cap. However, BCG's 401(k) contribution has increased to over $10,000 per year, which offsets some of the gap in total first-year value. For a deeper look, see our BCG salary guide.

How Much Is the Bain Relocation Bonus?

Bain uses a distance-based tiered system for relocation bonuses. For MBA hires, Bain pays $8,000 for moves under 400 miles and $16,000 for moves of 400 miles or more. This makes Bain the most generous MBB firm for long-distance relocations. At the undergraduate level, Bain offers up to $5,000 for shorter moves and $8,000 for longer ones.

In my experience at Bain, the distance-based model made a real difference for candidates relocating from distant universities. If you are moving cross-country for your Bain office, the $16,000 relocation bonus can cover a significant portion of your moving expenses.

How Much Is the Big 4 Relocation Bonus?

Big 4 consulting relocation bonuses are less standardized than MBB packages. Based on reported data from the 2026 consulting salary reports, here is what to expect at each firm.

  • Deloitte: MBA hires moving cross-country can receive up to $10,000 in relocation assistance. Deloitte offers both lump sum and managed relocation options depending on role and level. According to Wall Street Oasis reports, Deloitte has offered $10,000 relocation bonuses to MBA hires alongside $30,000 signing bonuses.

  • KPMG: Up to $10,000 in relocation support for qualifying MBA hires, based on the 2026 Consulting Salaries Report. KPMG also stands out for offering 30 days of PTO, more than any other Big 4 firm.

  • EY and EY-Parthenon: Relocation support is determined on a case-by-case basis. EY-Parthenon tends to offer more competitive packages for MBA hires given its strategy focus.

  • PwC and Strategy&: Relocation packages vary by office and practice. PwC Strategy& offers total first-year MBA compensation up to $280,000, which may include relocation support.

How Much Is the Boutique Firm Relocation Bonus?

Boutique consulting firms vary widely in their relocation offerings. Some firms like Oliver Wyman and Kearney offer relocation support comparable to Big 4 firms. Others, particularly smaller boutiques, may offer minimal or no formal relocation assistance but could be willing to negotiate a higher signing bonus to offset moving costs.

According to the 2026 Consulting Salaries Report, Accenture offers up to $5,000 for interns to relocate, and several boutique firms bundle relocation support into their signing bonus rather than offering it as a separate line item. If relocation is not explicitly listed in your offer, it is always worth asking.

What Does a Consulting Relocation Bonus Cover?

A consulting relocation bonus is paid as a lump sum, so you can spend it on whatever moving expenses you need. There are no restrictions on how the money is used. That said, here are the most common expenses candidates use it for:

  • Moving services: Hiring movers, renting a truck, shipping boxes, and transporting furniture

  • Travel expenses: Flights or driving costs to your new city, plus any apartment-hunting trips beforehand

  • Temporary housing: Short-term rental, Airbnb, or hotel stays while you search for a permanent place

  • Security deposit and first month's rent: Upfront costs for your new apartment or lease

  • Storage: If you need to store belongings temporarily during the transition

According to CapRelo, the average cost of relocating a renter domestically ranges from $15,000 to $35,000 when including all moving-related expenses. The consulting relocation bonus typically will not cover every dollar of a major cross-country move, but it can make a meaningful dent, especially for recent graduates with fewer belongings.

How Is a Consulting Relocation Bonus Different from a Signing Bonus?

A consulting relocation bonus and a signing bonus are two separate payments, though candidates sometimes confuse them. Here is how they compare.

The key takeaway is that your signing bonus is part of your total compensation package regardless of where you live, while the relocation bonus is an additional payment specifically for candidates who need to move. At MBB firms, MBA signing bonuses have held steady at $30,000 across McKinsey, BCG, and Bain for several consecutive years, according to Poets & Quants.

Are Consulting Relocation Bonuses Taxable?

Yes. Under the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, all employer-paid relocation benefits are treated as taxable income. The IRS treats your relocation bonus exactly like any other bonus, which means federal income tax, state tax (if applicable), Social Security, and Medicare taxes are all withheld before you receive the money.

This is a significant change from prior years. Before 2018, employees could deduct qualified moving expenses on their federal tax return. That deduction has been suspended for most taxpayers through at least 2025, with active-duty military being the only exception, according to IRS guidelines.

Here is what this means in practice. If your consulting firm offers a $10,000 relocation bonus, you will likely receive between $6,000 and $7,500 after taxes, depending on your tax bracket and state. Some firms offer a "gross-up," which is an additional payment designed to cover your tax liability so you receive the full intended amount. If your firm offers a gross-up, a $10,000 relocation bonus might show up as $14,000 to $18,000 on your W-2, because the firm is paying the taxes on your behalf.

Having coached hundreds of candidates through the offer process, I always recommend asking your recruiter two questions: "Is the relocation bonus grossed up for taxes?" and "What will my net take-home amount be?" These two questions can save you from a surprise when your first paycheck arrives.

What Is a Clawback Clause on a Relocation Bonus?

A clawback clause requires you to repay all or part of your relocation bonus if you leave the firm within a specified period, usually one to two years. According to AIHR, most relocation clawback agreements use a prorated repayment schedule, meaning you owe less the longer you stay.

For example, if your clawback period is two years and you leave after one year, you might owe 50% of the relocation bonus. If you leave after 18 months, you might owe 25%. The exact terms depend on your offer letter, so read the fine print carefully before signing.

Clawback clauses are standard practice in consulting and are not a red flag. They exist because firms invest significant resources in hiring and onboarding new consultants. According to the Worldwide ERC, companies spend an average of $19,000 to $70,000 relocating a new hire, so firms want reasonable assurance that you will stay long enough to justify the expense.

One important tax wrinkle: if you repay a relocation bonus in a different calendar year than you received it, you may face complications. You already paid income tax on the bonus when you received it, but you are now returning the money. Consult a tax professional if this applies to you, because the IRS has specific rules under Section 1341 for recovering taxes on repaid income.

Can You Negotiate a Consulting Relocation Bonus?

Yes, you can negotiate a consulting relocation bonus, and it is often easier to negotiate than base salary. At MBB firms, base salary is fixed for each level and is not negotiable. But relocation bonuses are considered a one-time expense from a different budget line, which gives recruiters more flexibility. Experienced hires tend to have the most room to negotiate, but even campus hires can sometimes get a bump.

If you are preparing for consulting recruiting and want to maximize your chances of landing multiple offers (which gives you leverage in negotiations), see our step-by-step guide on how to get into consulting.

What Are the Best Strategies to Negotiate a Higher Relocation Bonus?

Based on my experience coaching candidates through the offer negotiation process at Bain, here are five strategies that work.

1. Present itemized cost data. Do not ask for a vague increase. Instead, put together a spreadsheet of your actual moving costs: movers ($2,000 to $5,000), security deposit ($3,000 to $5,000), flights ($500 to $1,000), temporary housing ($2,000 to $4,000), and miscellaneous expenses. When you show the recruiter a real number, they can make a data-driven case internally.

2. Use competing offers as leverage. If you have offers from multiple firms, you have the strongest negotiating position. You do not need to be aggressive. Simply let your recruiter know that another firm is offering a higher relocation package and ask if they can match it.

3. Ask for a gross-up. Even if the firm will not increase the dollar amount of your relocation bonus, they may agree to gross it up for taxes. This effectively increases your take-home by 30% to 40% at no additional risk to the firm. According to CapRelo, many companies now offer gross-ups as standard practice.

4. Negotiate timing. If you need the relocation bonus upfront to cover a security deposit or moving company costs, ask for early disbursement. Some firms pay the bonus with your first paycheck, which may be three to four weeks after your start date. Getting it earlier can make a real difference in cash flow.

5. Bundle it with other asks. If the firm cannot increase the relocation bonus, consider asking for temporary housing support, an extended start date to reduce overlap costs, or reimbursement for apartment-hunting trips. These are lower-cost items for the firm that can add meaningful value for you.

When Do You Receive Your Consulting Relocation Bonus?

Most consulting firms pay the relocation bonus within your first one to two pay cycles after your start date. In practice, this means you will typically receive the money within two to five weeks of starting. Some firms include it with your first paycheck alongside your signing bonus, while others process it separately.

Based on reports from recent hires, McKinsey and BCG typically pay the relocation bonus with or shortly after the first paycheck. Bain follows a similar timeline. At Deloitte, candidates have reported receiving half the signing bonus immediately upon signing and the other half with the first paycheck, with relocation processed separately.

If you need the funds before your start date, ask your recruiter. Some firms can arrange an early payment, especially if you explain specific upfront costs like a security deposit or moving company deposit that require cash before you begin work.

How Should You Choose Your Consulting Office to Maximize Relocation Value?

Here is an insight most candidates overlook: at MBB firms, your base salary is the same regardless of which office you work in. A McKinsey Business Analyst in San Francisco earns the same $112,000 base as one in Atlanta. But your cost of living can vary by 30% to 50% between these cities.

This means choosing a lower cost-of-living office can dramatically increase your real take-home pay. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the cost of living in cities like Atlanta, Dallas, and Chicago is 20% to 40% lower than in San Francisco or New York. Your relocation bonus can fund the move to a city where your salary goes much further.

Some Big 4 firms do adjust salaries by office location, with higher pay in New York and San Francisco. But MBB firms pay a flat rate nationally, which creates a real financial advantage for consultants who are flexible about where they live. If you are an MBA student recruiting for consulting, factoring in cost of living can add tens of thousands of dollars in effective value to your offer over a two to three year stint.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Consulting Interns Get Relocation Bonuses?

Some consulting firms offer relocation support for interns, but it is less common and usually smaller than full-time relocation bonuses. According to the 2026 Consulting Salaries Report, Accenture offers up to $5,000 for interns to relocate, and Bain provides approximately $1,000 in housing or relocation support for undergraduate interns. MBB internships typically last about 10 weeks, so most firms keep intern relocation support modest.

Do You Have to Pay Back a Relocation Bonus If You Leave?

Usually, yes. Most consulting firms include a clawback clause in the offer letter that requires you to repay all or a prorated portion of the relocation bonus if you leave within one to two years. The repayment amount typically decreases over time on a monthly or quarterly basis. Read your offer letter carefully for the exact terms before signing.

Is a Consulting Relocation Bonus Worth It?

Yes, a consulting relocation bonus is worth accepting if you genuinely need to relocate for the role. The money offsets real expenses, and the clawback clause is only relevant if you leave the firm early. Since the average consulting tenure is two to four years according to industry data, most consultants stay long enough for the clawback period to expire. Just factor in the tax implications so you know your actual net take-home.

Can You Get a Relocation Bonus If You Already Live Near the Office?

Typically, no. Consulting firms reserve relocation bonuses for candidates who need to move a significant distance to reach their assigned office. If you already live in or near the office city, you will not receive a relocation bonus. However, you will still receive all other components of the offer, including your signing bonus, base salary, and performance bonus.

How Does a Consulting Relocation Bonus Compare to Tech?

Tech relocation packages tend to be more generous than consulting relocation bonuses. According to Levels.fyi, companies like Google, Amazon, and Microsoft offer relocation packages ranging from $7,000 to over $10,000 for entry-level roles, with some senior positions receiving full-service managed relocations. However, consulting firms typically offer higher signing bonuses ($30,000 at MBB for MBA hires versus $10,000 to $25,000 at many tech firms), which can offset the difference.
