Consulting salary by level runs from roughly $140,000 in total compensation for a first-year analyst to more than $1 million for a senior partner, spread across six rungs on the ladder. This guide gives you base pay, bonus, and total compensation at each level, plus how those numbers change between MBB, Big 4, and tier 2 firms.

Key Takeaways

Consulting pay roughly doubles at the post-MBA promotion, then the bonus quietly takes over as the main driver of your total compensation.

  • Entry-level undergraduate hires earn $90,000 to $140,000 in total first-year pay, depending on firm tier

  • Post-MBA hires jump to $210,000 to $285,000, the single largest raise on the ladder

  • Managers earn $215,000 to $350,000, with the bonus climbing past 20% of base pay

  • Partners clear $500,000 and can exceed $5 million once profit sharing is included

  • Starting salaries have been flat for three straight years across MBB and the Big 4

  • The maximum bonus firms advertise is often double what the average consultant actually collects

What Is the Consulting Salary by Level?

Consulting salary by level in the United States runs from about $90,000 to $140,000 in total compensation for entry-level analysts, $210,000 to $285,000 for post-MBA consultants, $215,000 to $350,000 for managers, $270,000 to $440,000 for principals, and $500,000 to more than $5 million for partners. Base pay drives the early years. Bonus and profit sharing drive everything after the manager promotion.

The table below shows the full ladder, using 2026 figures from Poets and Quants, Levels.fyi, and Glassdoor. Total compensation includes base salary, performance bonus, and any profit sharing.

For context on how unusual these numbers are, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a median annual wage of $101,190 for management analysts in May 2024, with the top 10% earning more than $174,140. A first-year MBB analyst starts near that occupational median. A post-MBA consultant clears the 90th percentile of the entire profession in year one.

What Are the Levels on the Consulting Career Ladder?

Every major firm runs the same six-rung structure with different labels. The confusion this causes is real, and it costs candidates money when they compare offers using titles instead of levels.

I have watched candidates turn down a stronger offer because one firm called the role "consultant" and another called it "senior consultant" at the same pay band. Match the level, not the consulting job titles.

Two wrinkles are worth knowing before you compare offers. Some Big 4 practices bring MBA hires in at Consultant while their strategy arms bring the same candidate in at Senior Consultant, which is a full level and roughly $60,000 apart. Get the level confirmed in writing, not the title.

How Much Do Entry-Level Consultants Make?

Entry-level consultants hired out of undergrad earn $90,000 to $140,000 in total first-year compensation. At MBB, base pay sits at $112,000 for McKinsey and Bain and $110,000 for BCG, according to Poets and Quants data published in January 2026. Bain leads total compensation at $140,000, about $3,000 ahead of BCG and McKinsey.

The performance bonus is what separates them. Bain tops out at $22,500, BCG at $22,000, and McKinsey at $18,000. All three add a signing bonus of roughly $5,000, which is small enough that it should not swing your decision.

Big 4 pay at this level splits sharply between the strategy arms and core consulting. PwC Strategy& pays the most at $132,000 total, followed by EY Strategy and Operations at $130,000, Deloitte Strategy and Analytics at $112,000, and KPMG Strategy at $110,000. EY Consulting sits at the bottom of that group at $90,000.

Boutiques are the surprise here. OC&C Strategy Consultants starts undergraduates at a $110,000 base that can reach $147,000 with performance pay, which beats every MBB package. Alvarez and Marsal pairs a $112,000 base with a performance bonus reaching $51,000.

One thing candidates consistently underestimate is the retirement contribution. McKinsey's 7.5% allocation adds roughly $8,400 in year one on top of the headline number, and Bain contributes up to $6,050. Neither shows up in the salary figure you compare against a friend's offer.

If you are still in school, the consulting intern salary at these same firms usually annualizes close to the full-time base, which makes a summer offer the cheapest way to lock in an entry-level seat.

How Much Do Post-MBA Consultants Make?

Post-MBA consultants earn $210,000 to $285,000 in total first-year compensation. This is the biggest jump on the entire ladder, roughly doubling what the same person earned as an analyst two or three years earlier.

Base pay across MBB is nearly identical: $192,000 at Bain and McKinsey, $190,000 at BCG. All three offer a $30,000 signing bonus. The differences show up entirely in the bonus ceiling and the benefits, which is where the MBA consulting salary comparison actually gets interesting.

Notice that PwC Strategy& at $280,000 beats both BCG and McKinsey. Candidates fixate on the MBB logo and assume the pay follows automatically. At the post-MBA level it does not, and the strategy arms of the Big 4 have quietly closed that gap.

The Bain number deserves a caveat. That $285,000 assumes you hit the maximum $63,000 performance bonus, which top-rated consultants earn and average performers do not. A realistic first-year Bain package for someone rated in the middle of the pack lands closer to $250,000.

How Much Do Consulting Managers Make?

Consulting managers earn $215,000 to $350,000 in total compensation, with base salaries between $185,000 and $250,000. This is the level where you stop doing analysis and start owning the client relationship, the team, and the outcome.

Levels.fyi reports a median total package of $305,073 for a McKinsey Engagement Manager. At Oliver Wyman, self-reported data puts the Engagement Manager level at $274,000 total, built from a $221,000 base and a $53,200 bonus. Big 4 managers sit lower, with Deloitte reporting roughly $213,000.

The manager promotion changes the shape of your pay, not just the size. At Oliver Wyman, the bonus is about 12% of base at the Consultant and Associate levels and jumps to 24% at Engagement Manager, based on Levels.fyi figures from March 2026. Your income becomes noticeably more volatile from this point forward.

In my experience at Bain, this is also where the job stops being a job you can coast in. A manager who delivers a strong engagement and a manager who delivers an adequate one can finish the year $60,000 apart on identical base salaries.

How Much Do Principals and Associate Partners Make?

Principals and associate partners earn $270,000 to $440,000 in total compensation. This is the last rung before partnership and the level where the firm decides whether you will ever be an owner.

Levels.fyi data shows Bain Principals at the top of the firm's reported United States range at $368,000, Oliver Wyman Principals near $343,000, and McKinsey Associate Partners at a median of $432,185. Big 4 Senior Managers, the equivalent rung, report closer to $269,000.

Your pay at this level depends on something that never mattered before: whether clients call you specifically. Delivery excellence gets you here. Revenue generation gets you past here.

This level also has the widest spread of any rung, which is why the reported ranges look so inconsistent across sources. A principal in a strong year and a principal in a weak year can be $80,000 apart on the same base salary.

Not everyone wants to keep climbing, and this is the most common departure point on the ladder. The consulting exit opportunities available to a principal, especially private equity operating roles and corporate strategy leadership, often pay comparably with far fewer travel weeks.

How Much Do Consulting Partners Make?

Consulting partners at MBB earn $500,000 to $5 million or more per year. The range is that wide because partners are owners, not employees, and most of what they take home is a profit distribution rather than a paycheck.

McKinsey partners draw a base salary of roughly $400,000 to $650,000, with Glassdoor data from 2026 putting median total pay near $475,000 across 112 submissions. BCG's salaried partner tier sits at about a $270,000 base with total cash reaching $450,000 to $700,000, and equity-owning Managing Directors and Partners move into seven figures. At Deloitte, junior Principals earn $500,000 to $800,000 and the most senior tier clears $2.5 million.

Here is the mistake almost everyone makes when researching the consulting partner salary. Salary aggregators list partner pay near $250,000 because they capture base draw only and miss the profit distributions that make up most of the income. Treating that number as the full picture undercounts a senior partner by a million dollars or more.

New partners at most firms also make a capital buy-in when they are admitted, which can run from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars. You are purchasing an ownership stake, so the first year of partner economics is worse than the headline suggests.

How Does Consulting Salary by Level Differ Across Firm Tiers?

The gap between firm tiers is narrow at entry level and widens sharply as you climb. An undergraduate hire at EY Consulting starts about $50,000 behind a Bain hire. A partner at the same two firms can be separated by several million.

The strategy arms are the arbitrage most candidates miss. PwC Strategy& and EY-Parthenon pay within a few percent of MBB at the post-MBA level while accepting candidates at meaningfully higher rates than McKinsey, BCG, or Bain do.

Pay is only one axis, though. Many tier 2 consulting firms offer earlier client exposure and a shorter path to owning a workstream, which compounds into faster promotions and higher lifetime earnings than the raw entry-level number suggests.

Why Does Your Bonus Grow at Every Level?

Your bonus grows at every level because firms shift risk onto you as your influence over revenue increases. An analyst cannot lose the firm a client. A partner can.

Levels.fyi self-reported data makes the pattern easy to see at Oliver Wyman, where the bonus runs about 12% of base at the Consultant level, 11% at Senior Consultant, 12% at Associate, and then 24% at Engagement Manager. The step change lands exactly at the point where you first own an engagement.

There is a second pattern in that data that almost nobody writes about. The maximum bonus figures firms publish are far higher than the averages consultants actually report.

McKinsey's advertised undergraduate performance bonus tops out at $18,000, but Levels.fyi shows Business Analysts reporting an average bonus of $10,800 as of February 2026. At the Associate level the advertised ceiling is $40,000 and the reported average is $17,100. Plan your finances against the average, not the ceiling.

The mechanics behind those swings are worth understanding before you accept an offer, because the consulting bonus structure at most firms ties your payout to a performance rating assigned in a calibration session you never attend.

What Is Your Real Hourly Pay at Each Level?

Total compensation hides something important: your hours rise with your level too. When you divide pay by hours worked, the ladder looks very different from the salary table.

Let's say you work 60 hours per week for 48 weeks a year at the analyst, post-MBA, and partner levels, and 65 hours per week at the manager and principal levels. Those hour assumptions are illustrative estimates, not reported data, but they reflect the pattern I saw across case teams at Bain.

Principal

Partner

The manager promotion is the one rung where your effective hourly pay goes flat. Total compensation climbs about $20,000, but the extra five hours a week absorb almost all of it.

This is why so many strong consultants leave right after making manager. The title feels like progress and the paycheck barely moves per hour of your life, which is a much easier decision to see once you have run the math on consulting hours per week instead of annual salary.

How Long Does It Take to Reach Each Level?

Reaching partner takes 10 to 15 years from an undergraduate start at MBB and 12 to 18 years at a Big 4 firm. Each individual promotion takes two to three years, and the up-or-out model means missing a promotion window usually means leaving.

  1. Entry to senior analyst: 1 to 2 years, largely automatic for anyone meeting expectations

  2. Senior analyst to post-MBA consultant: 2 to 3 years, usually via business school or a direct promotion for top performers

  3. Post-MBA consultant to manager: 2 to 3 years, the first promotion that is genuinely competitive

  4. Manager to principal: 2 to 3 years, gated on client relationships rather than delivery quality

  5. Principal to partner: 2 to 4 years, decided by a partnership vote rather than a timeline

The direct promotion path deserves more attention than it gets. A small share of analysts skip business school entirely and move straight to the post-MBA level, which saves two years of tuition and captures $190,000 of salary during the years a classmate is paying to attend school.

Very few people reach the end. Most consultants exit somewhere between the manager and principal levels, and the consulting promotion timeline is designed with that attrition assumed rather than treated as a failure.

How Do You Increase Your Consulting Salary at Every Level?

There are four moves that reliably raise lifetime consulting earnings, and only one of them involves negotiating.

Tip #1: Enter at the highest tier you can pass the interview for

The entry-level gap between EY Consulting and Bain is roughly $50,000 in year one. That gap compounds at every promotion, because each firm sets its bands relative to its own tier.

Case interviews are the gate at every firm on this list. If you want to learn case interviews quickly, my case interview course walks you through proven strategies in as little as 7 days.

Tip #2: Target the strategy arm, not the parent firm

PwC Strategy& pays $280,000 at the post-MBA level against $245,000 at PwC Consulting Services. Same building, same brand on your resume, $35,000 apart every year.

Tip #3: Chase the performance rating, not the raise

Base pay is fixed by band, so the only variable you control is your rating. At the post-MBA level that rating is worth up to $63,000 at Bain, which is a larger swing than any promotion below manager delivers.

Tip #4: Get the level in writing before you sign

Titles vary between firms and even between practices inside one firm. Ask for the internal level code and the band it maps to, since a Senior Consultant offer at a strategy practice and a Consultant offer at a core practice can be a full rung apart.

Understanding consulting salary by level matters most at the two moments where the numbers actually move: the post-MBA entry and the partner decision. Everything in between is a predictable 20% to 40% step that your rating, not your negotiating, determines. The single most valuable thing you can do right now is make sure you enter at the highest firm tier your interview performance will support, because every raise for the next decade is calculated off that starting band.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the average consulting salary by level?

Entry-level consultants average $90,000 to $140,000 in total first-year compensation, post-MBA consultants average $210,000 to $285,000, managers average $215,000 to $350,000, principals average $270,000 to $440,000, and partners average $500,000 or more. These are United States figures for 2026. Pay at every level is set by internal bands rather than negotiation, so two consultants at the same level and firm start within a few thousand dollars of each other.

How much does a consultant make after an MBA?

A post-MBA consultant at McKinsey, BCG, or Bain earns a base salary of $190,000 to $192,000 plus a $30,000 signing bonus. According to Poets and Quants data published in January 2026, total compensation reached $285,000 at Bain, $270,000 at BCG, and $267,000 at McKinsey. Big 4 strategy arms are close behind, with PwC Strategy& topping that group at $280,000.

Which consulting promotion comes with the biggest pay jump?

The move from undergraduate analyst to post-MBA consultant is the largest single jump on the ladder, roughly doubling total compensation from about $140,000 to about $270,000. The second biggest jump comes at the partner promotion, where profit sharing replaces a fixed bonus and total pay can move from $400,000 to well over $1 million. Everything in between typically adds 20% to 40% per promotion.

Do all consulting firms pay the same at each level?

No. MBB firms pay within a few percent of each other at every level, but the gap between MBB and other firms widens as you climb. At the undergraduate level, EY Consulting reported $90,000 in total compensation against $140,000 at Bain, according to Poets and Quants. Strategy arms such as PwC Strategy& and EY-Parthenon pay much closer to MBB than their parent firms do.

How long does it take to reach partner in consulting?

Reaching partner takes 10 to 15 years from an undergraduate start at most firms, or 8 to 11 years if you enter after an MBA. Big 4 firms tend to run longer, at roughly 12 to 18 years, because their ladders have more rungs. Very few people complete the full path, since the up-or-out model pushes most consultants out or into industry roles well before the partner decision.

Are consulting salaries still increasing each year?

No. Starting salaries at both the undergraduate and MBA levels have been essentially flat for three consecutive years, according to Poets and Quants reporting from January 2026. MBB base pay of $192,000 for MBA hires and $112,000 for undergraduate hires has not moved since 2023. Firms are holding the line because consulting has become more selective rather than because demand has fallen.
