- Deloitte UK equity partners averaged £1.051m in FY25, ahead of PwC, KPMG, and EY
- A £50,000 London base is about £37,700 in your bank account once tax, National Insurance, and a student loan come out
- Salaries outside London run 5 to 12% lower, and Scotland sits at the bottom of the range
What Is the Average Consulting Salary in the UK?
The average consulting salary in the UK is roughly £50,000 at entry level, £85,000 to £100,000 for a post-MBA consultant, and £110,000 or more at manager level. Big 4 firms pay at the bottom of those ranges and strategy firms at the top. Partner pay at the largest UK firms averages between £787,000 and £1.05 million.
That spread is why you see wildly different answers to this question. The government's National Careers Service profile puts management consultants at £27,000 for a starter and £60,000 for an experienced hire. Those figures are not wrong, they just describe a different population.
The government number covers every management consultant in the country, including small regional firms and public sector advisory roles. The numbers candidates actually care about come from a much narrower slice: strategy houses and the consulting arms of the Big 4, almost all concentrated in London.
Here is what pay looks like across the full UK consulting ladder.

Figures compiled from Glassdoor UK, Levels.fyi Greater London data, and published Big 4 partner remuneration, all 2026. Ranges are wide because they span Big 4 core consulting at the bottom and strategy firms at the top.
One useful benchmark: the Office for National Statistics reported median gross annual earnings of £39,039 for UK full-time employees in April 2025. A Big 4 graduate consultant clears that on day one. An MBB graduate clears it by roughly £20,000.
What Do McKinsey, BCG, and Bain Pay in the UK?
MBB graduate hires in London earn a base salary of roughly £49,500 to £52,000, with total packages of £57,000 to £63,000 once performance bonuses land. Bain pays the highest graduate package of the three. The gap between all three firms is small enough that it should never decide where you go.
These are the numbers for undergraduate and Master's hires joining as Business Analysts, Associates, or Associate Consultants.

Post-MBA is where the numbers change character. An MBA, PhD, or roughly seven years of experience gets you in at Associate at McKinsey London or Consultant at BCG and Bain, and base salary roughly doubles.

Two things I want to flag from my own time at Bain. First, entry-level base is lockstep, so every person in your London cohort is paid the identical number and there is nothing to negotiate. Second, the published bonus ceilings are ceilings, not expectations, and most first-years land somewhere in the middle.
Getting to these numbers means passing four to six case interviews against a candidate pool that is heavily oversubscribed at the BCG London office and its equivalents. If you want to learn case interviews quickly, my case interview course walks you through proven strategies in as little as 7 days.
What Do the Big 4 Pay Consultants in the UK?
Big 4 graduate consultants in the UK start at roughly £32,000 to £37,000 base, putting them about £15,000 behind MBB on day one. Deloitte pays the most and KPMG the least. Bonuses at this level are modest, usually £2,000 to £3,000.

How does Big 4 consulting pay grow with each promotion?
Big 4 pay roughly doubles between graduate and manager, then doubles again by senior manager. Deloitte's London ladder is the clearest public example because it has the most reported data behind it.
- Analyst: around £31,000 base, rising toward £37,000 total with bonus
- Consultant: £41,000 to £45,000 base after two to three years
- Senior Consultant: around £61,000 base and £63,000 total in London, per Glassdoor
- Manager: around £75,000 average in London across 531 Glassdoor submissions
- Senior Manager: median total package of £97,716 in Greater London, per Levels.fyi
Why does your service line matter more than your firm?
The single biggest mistake candidates make when researching Big 4 consulting pay is comparing firms instead of comparing practices. An audit graduate and a Strategy& graduate can start at the same firm on the same Monday with a gap of £15,000 or more.
Each Big 4 firm runs a strategy arm that recruits separately, runs its own case interviews, and pays a clear premium over core consulting. Strategy& sits inside PwC, EY-Parthenon inside EY, Monitor Deloitte inside Deloitte, and KPMG Strategy inside KPMG.
Strategy& graduates in the UK start around £52,000 base, which is MBB territory and roughly £18,000 ahead of a core PwC consulting graduate. That gap does not close with time. It compounds through every promotion, because each raise is calculated off the higher number.
What Do Tier 2 and Boutique Firms Pay in the UK?
Several UK boutiques pay graduate salaries that match or beat MBB. Strategy&, OC&C, Simon-Kucher, and L.E.K. all start graduates around £50,000 to £52,000, which is why writing off boutique consulting firms as a fallback is a mistake.

Reported base salaries for UK graduate hires, compiled from published salary surveys and self-reported data in 2026. Treat these as indicative, since UK firms almost never publish pay bands.
Reported figures for Oliver Wyman are the most inconsistent of any firm in this market, spanning £34,000 to over £45,000 at graduate level depending on which survey you read. If you have an offer in hand, that number beats anything published. The same caution applies to smaller tier 2 consulting firms, where sample sizes are tiny.
How Much Is a UK Consulting Salary After Tax?
A £50,000 London base leaves you roughly £37,700 a year after income tax, National Insurance, and a Plan 2 student loan, which is about £3,140 a month. Almost no salary guide shows this, and it is the number that actually determines whether you can afford a flat in Clapham.
The figures below use 2026/27 rates for England, Wales, and Northern Ireland: a £12,570 personal allowance, 20% basic rate to £50,270, 40% higher rate to £125,140, employee National Insurance of 8% then 2%, and Plan 2 student loan repayments of 9% above £29,385.

Calculated using 2026/27 thresholds from the House of Commons Library and the Plan 2 repayment threshold confirmed by the Department for Education. Scotland sets its own income tax bands and figures there are lower. Pension contributions are excluded.
The line worth studying is the third one. Post-MBA consultants get hit by the tapered personal allowance, which shrinks by £1 for every £2 earned above £100,000 and disappears entirely at £125,140.
Inside that £25,140 band, every extra pound is taxed at 40%, plus 2% National Insurance, plus an effective 20% from the vanishing allowance. That is a 62% marginal rate, and 71% if you are still repaying a Plan 2 loan. A £10,000 raise in that band puts under £3,000 in your pocket.
What does a UK consulting salary work out to per hour?
This is the calculation nobody in recruiting wants you to run. The government job profile lists 37 to 42 hours a week for management consultants, which bears no resemblance to strategy consulting. In my experience at Bain, 60-hour weeks were routine and 70 was not unusual during a difficult phase of a case.
Take a Bain Associate Consultant on a £52,000 base. At 60 hours a week across 46 working weeks, that is 2,760 hours and an effective rate of roughly £19 an hour.
The ONS put median hourly earnings for UK full-time employees at £19.67 in April 2025. A first-year MBB consultant in London is earning close to the national median hourly wage. The money in consulting comes from the speed of the ladder, not the first rung, which is why understanding the consulting career path matters more than comparing graduate offers.
How Do Consulting Salaries Change Outside London?
Consulting salaries outside London run roughly 5 to 12% lower. Manchester and Birmingham sit about 5% below the London baseline, while Scotland sits closest to 88% of it. Cost of living falls further than pay does, so take-home purchasing power outside London is usually better.

Edinburgh |
£43,266 to £61,593 |
About 12% lower |
Birmingham |
£38,584 to £65,744 |

One caveat that catches people out. MBB pays a single London rate, and because almost every UK MBB consultant sits in London, the regional discount barely applies to strategy firms. It bites hardest at Big 4 and technology consulting practices with large regional offices in Manchester, Leeds, and Glasgow.
If you are weighing a regional office, run the maths on rent before you take the London premium. A £5,000 pay cut in Manchester is usually swamped by the rent difference, and the trade-off is worth understanding before you commit to consulting recruiting in the UK.
How Much Do UK Consulting Partners Earn?
UK partners at the Big 4 averaged between £787,000 and £1.051 million in their most recently reported years. Deloitte leads. These are averages across hundreds of partners, so individual outcomes swing widely with personal performance and firm profitability.
- Deloitte: £1.051m average profit per equity partner in FY25, up 4% year on year
- PwC: on course for over £900,000 for the year to June 2026, up from £865,000
- KPMG: £880,000 in its latest reported average
- EY: £787,000 in its latest reported average
Deloitte's figure comes straight from the firm's own published results for the year ended 31 May 2025, which reported revenue of £5.68bn and distributable profit of £789m. That was the fifth consecutive year Deloitte partner payouts cleared £1 million.
PwC's increase is worth reading carefully, because it followed a cost-cutting programme that took UK headcount from 36,000 to 33,700 and trimmed the graduate intake by 200 places. Partner pay and graduate hiring move in opposite directions more often than firms like to admit.
MBB does not publish UK partner remuneration. Self-reported data on Levels.fyi shows Bain London management consultant packages reaching £1.36m at partner level, which puts strategy partners broadly in line with Big 4 equity partners rather than far ahead of them. The structure of a consulting partner salary is completely different from a salaried role, because partners take a monthly draw against projected profits and settle up once the books close.
Why Are UK Consulting Salaries Lower Than in the US?
UK consulting salaries sit well below American equivalents in currency terms at every level. A McKinsey Associate in the US starts near $192,000 base, while a McKinsey Associate in London starts near £90,000.
The gap is real, but the comparison is less brutal than it looks. There are four reasons it exists.
-
Talent competition: US firms bid against Wall Street and Silicon Valley for the same graduates, which drags every offer upward
-
Client billing rates: US engagements command higher fees, and consultant pay is downstream of what clients will pay
-
Benefits that never show up on a payslip: NHS coverage, a statutory minimum of 28 days paid leave, and employer pension contributions replace costs Americans pay from salary
- Currency drift: the pound bought roughly twice as many dollars in 2010 as it does now, and UK pay bands never adjusted upward to compensate
The practical takeaway is that you should never benchmark a London offer against an American salary guide. Doing so will make a genuinely strong offer look disappointing, and it is the most common reason UK candidates undervalue their own MBB salaries.
How Do You Increase Your Consulting Salary in the UK?
You have four real levers on UK consulting pay: which practice you join, how you handle the signing bonus, whether you hold a competing offer, and how quickly you clear each promotion gate. Base salary at entry level is not one of them.
Tip #1: Apply to the strategy arm, not the core practice
This is the single biggest pay decision in UK consulting recruiting and it costs you nothing. A Strategy& or EY-Parthenon graduate offer starts around £18,000 ahead of the core consulting offer at the same firm.
The strategy arms recruit on separate timelines with separate applications, so you have to seek them out deliberately. They also run proper case interviews, which is where most applicants come unstuck.
Tip #2: Negotiate the signing bonus rather than the base
Entry-level base salary at MBB and the Big 4 is lockstep across your whole cohort, and recruiters have no authority to change it. Pushing on base only signals that you have not done your research.
The consulting signing bonus is different, because it comes out of a discretionary pot. Relocation support is negotiable too, especially if you are moving to London from outside the South East.
Tip #3: Get a second offer before you open the conversation
Nothing else moves the number. A competing offer from a firm of comparable standing is the only thing that reliably changes what a UK recruiter can approve.
The practical problem is that a second offer means passing a second set of case interviews on a compressed timeline. My interview coaching is built for exactly that situation, when you need to be sharp fast rather than prepared eventually.
Tip #4: Watch the £100,000 threshold once you are senior
Post-MBA consultants land in the band where the personal allowance tapers away and the marginal rate hits 62%. Additional pension contributions reduce your adjusted net income, which is why so many senior consultants in London route bonus money into pensions rather than take it as cash.
I am not an accountant and this is not tax advice, so speak to one before you restructure anything. But it is worth knowing that the headline raise and the money you actually receive can diverge sharply above £100,000.
Tip #5: Treat the exit as part of the compensation
Two years at MBB in London routinely leads to private equity, corporate strategy, or a startup role that pays more than staying would have. The consulting exit opportunities are a genuine part of what your first offer is worth.
This is the strongest argument for taking the MBB or strategy boutique offer over a higher-paying industry role at 22. You are buying optionality, and in the UK market that optionality is worth more than the £5,000 difference between two graduate offers.
Your consulting salary UK outcome is decided long before anyone sends you a number, by which practice you target and how well you case. Pick the strategy arm, get the case interviews right, and the compensation follows on its own.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good consulting salary in the UK?
A good UK consulting salary at graduate level is anything above £45,000, because that puts you ahead of every Big 4 graduate consulting offer. At MBB firms in London, graduate total packages reach £60,000 to £63,000. For context, the ONS put median full-time earnings across the whole UK workforce at £39,039 in April 2025, so even a Big 4 graduate consulting offer sits comfortably above the national median.
How much do MBB consultants earn in London?
MBB graduate hires in London earn a base salary of roughly £49,500 to £52,000, with total packages of £57,000 to £63,000 once performance bonuses land. Post-MBA Consultants and Associates earn base salaries around £90,000 to £97,000. Levels.fyi puts median total packages at £112,703 for a McKinsey Associate and £105,799 for a BCG Consultant in Greater London.
Do UK consultants get bonuses?
Yes, but UK bonuses are far smaller than the American equivalents. MBB graduate bonuses in London run to roughly £7,000 to £11,000, while Big 4 graduate consulting bonuses are usually £2,000 to £3,000. Bonus as a share of base climbs steadily with seniority, and at partner level it stops being a bonus at all and becomes a share of firm profits.
Is a consulting salary enough to live in London?
A £50,000 London base leaves you roughly £37,700 after income tax, National Insurance, and a Plan 2 student loan, which works out to about £3,140 a month. That is comfortable for a flatshare and covers travel and savings, but it does not stretch to living alone in central London. Big 4 graduate consultants on £37,000 take home closer to £2,450 a month.
How much does a Big 4 consultant earn in the UK?
Big 4 graduate consultants in the UK start at roughly £32,000 to £37,000 base, with Deloitte at the top and EY and KPMG at the bottom. Glassdoor puts the average Deloitte consulting graduate analyst in London at £37,507 total pay as of June 2026. Pay climbs to roughly £61,000 at Senior Consultant and £75,000 at Manager in London.
Do consulting salaries in the UK grow quickly?
Yes. Consulting pay roughly doubles between graduate entry and manager level in six to nine years, which is far faster than the typical UK career. The catch is that promotion is not automatic. Both MBB and the Big 4 run up-or-out systems, so the people collecting those raises are the ones clearing each performance bar on schedule.
