Key Takeaways
The INSEAD casebook is worth using for its international case variety and its unusually heavy math, but treat it as practice volume rather than as a teaching resource.
You can download the casebook here: INSEAD 2021.pdf
- The 2021 edition holds 13 cases across roughly 140 pages, up from 8 cases in the 2020 edition
- Every case carries three difficulty ratings on a 1 to 5 scale: quantitative, creativity, and structure
- Profitability appears in 6 of the 13 cases, more than any other case type
- Clients sit in the UK, Germany, Singapore, Australia, Thailand, and China, so you practice outside US dollar math
- Interviewer notes separate a good answer from a great one, which makes honest self-scoring possible
- The book teaches almost no structuring theory, so it cannot be your only prep resource
What Is the INSEAD Casebook?
The INSEAD casebook is a free collection of practice case interviews published by the INSEAD Consulting Club for MBA students recruiting into consulting. The most widely circulated edition, the 2021 ICC Casebook, runs about 140 pages and contains 13 cases contributed by INSEAD students and sponsor firms, each with exhibits, sample answers, and interviewer guidance.
The tradition started with the 2005 club board, and the book has been given away free ever since. BCG has sponsored the project since its first edition, supplying case materials and advice on how to compile it.
In 2020 the club split its publication into two documents. The Handbook covers the consulting industry, career paths, cover letters, and recruiting tips, while the Casebook holds the practice cases. When people say "INSEAD casebook" they almost always mean the second one.
The book carries weight because INSEAD is one of the largest single feeders into strategy consulting anywhere. According to INSEAD's own 2023 employment statistics, McKinsey hired 124 graduates from that class, BCG hired 83, and Bain hired 71.

That volume is the reason the cases feel realistic. Students who wrote them had just sat through real MBB interviews, and several cases were contributed directly by firms.
What Cases Are in the INSEAD Casebook?
The 2021 ICC Casebook contains 13 cases spanning eight industries. Each one is tagged with a case type, an industry, and whether it runs interviewer-led or candidate-led, which lets you pick cases that match the firm you are targeting.

Profitability dominates the book. It shows up in 6 of the 13 cases, which matches what you see in real interviews, where profitability cases are the single most common type.
The rest of the mix is unusually broad for a school casebook. You get two market entry cases, a pure operations case, a new product launch, an investment assessment, and one case built almost entirely around brainstorming business model design.
How Hard Are the Cases in the INSEAD Casebook?
Every case in the book opens with three difficulty ratings on a 1 to 5 scale: quantitative, creativity, and structure. That grid is the most useful feature of the book, because it lets you target your weakest skill instead of working through cases in order.
Three cases carry the maximum quantitative rating of 5: Great Western Bank, GoodWind Technologies, and Robot Co. If your case interview math is the weak link, start with those and ignore everything else in the book until you can finish them clean.
GoodWind Technologies is the hardest math in the book and it is not close. The case asks you to size the global winding machine market, which requires converting 30 million tons of cotton yarn into kilometers of yarn using a textile industry unit, then dividing by annual machine throughput and applying a renewal rate.
Robot Co. opens with a three-dimensional packing problem. You are given a robot compartment measuring 20 by 21 by 35 inches and a drink package measuring 5 by 7 by 4 inches, and asked for the maximum number of packages that fit. The interviewer notes flag that most candidates answer 102 when the correct answer is 105.
Innovation in Chemical Products is the only case rated 5 on structure. It was contributed by BASF Management Consulting and asks you to design two complete go-to-market models with almost no numbers at all, which is closer to a real firm-written case than most student-written material.
What Makes the INSEAD Casebook Different From US Casebooks?
The INSEAD casebook is the most international of the widely used school casebooks, and that is its real advantage. Clients sit in the UK, Germany, Singapore, Australia, Thailand, Indonesia, and China, and the math runs in euros, Singapore dollars, and US dollars depending on the case.
That matters if you are recruiting outside the United States. Candidates going through consulting recruiting in Europe get cases anchored in European market structures far more often than US candidates do, and this book is one of the few free resources that reflects that.
The book also leans harder into public sector and quasi-commercial clients than US books do. Two cases involve a government funded museum weighing profit against its public mission, and a third involves a national health system trying to improve care for patients over 60.
One case is unlike anything in a US casebook. In Seachange, the client is you: you are asked whether to quit your post-MBA job and open a resort in Southeast Asia, and the benchmark for a good decision is your own hypothetical salary.
Two cases also introduce industry metrics you will not find in a standard framework guide. The insurance case defines the combined ratio and asks you to work with it, and the banking case forces you to treat interest paid on deposits as a cost rather than as revenue.
Where Can You Download the INSEAD Casebook?
You can download the casebook here: INSEAD 2021.pdf
Current INSEAD students get the casebook and the accompanying handbook through the INSEAD Consulting Club website. The club distributes both documents free of charge and has done so since 2005.
Never pay for a copy. Every legitimate school casebook is free, and the full library of MBA consulting casebooks runs to dozens of books across every major program.
How Should You Use the INSEAD Casebook to Prepare?
Use the INSEAD casebook for volume and feedback, not for learning method. Having coached hundreds of candidates one on one, the pattern I see over and over is candidates opening a casebook on day one, reading model answers, and mistaking recognition for skill.
Here is the sequence that works:
-
Learn structuring first: spend your first week on frameworks, math drills, and synthesis before you open a single case in the book
-
Pick by weakness, not by order: use the three difficulty ratings on each case cover page to select cases that attack your worst skill
-
Do the case cold: read only the prompt and the clarifying information, then solve it fully before looking at anything else
-
Score yourself against the interviewer notes: every case ends with a good versus great comparison, so mark which bullets you actually hit
-
Log the specific miss: write down whether you lost points on structure, math, exhibit reading, or recommendation, and track it across cases
- Redo the case a week later: rerun any case where you missed the great tier until you clear it without hints
Most of this works alone. If you are trying to practice case interviews by yourself, the interviewer notes in this book substitute reasonably well for a partner, because they tell you what a strong answer contains rather than just giving you a number.
Case interviews are the deciding factor at every firm that recruits at INSEAD. If you want to learn case interviews quickly, my case interview course walks you through proven strategies in as little as 7 days.
What Are the Best Tips for Practicing With the INSEAD Casebook?
Tip #1: Time every case at 30 to 40 minutes
The cases in this book are long, and several contain three or four separate exhibits. Real interviews run 30 to 40 minutes, so set a timer and stop when it goes off, even mid-calculation.
What you learn from stopping is where your time actually goes. Most candidates discover they burn 10 minutes on a framework that should take 3.
Tip #2: Say your structure out loud before you write it down
Reading a case silently trains the wrong muscle. Interviewers judge how you communicate structure, not how neatly you draw it, and the gap between those two skills is where most candidates lose the round.
Record yourself for two or three cases. You will hear filler, backtracking, and buried logic that never shows up on paper.
Tip #3: Read the exhibit title and axes before the data
The exhibits in this book reward that habit. Exhibit 2 in the technology turnaround case looks like a simple bar chart of acquisitions, but the insight only lands when you connect it to the growth rates in the previous exhibit.
Build the habit on every chart you see. Strong case interview graph reading is mostly discipline, not intuition.
Tip #4: Do the market sizing cases without a calculator
You will not get a calculator in a real interview. GoodWind Technologies and StarBus Australia both require multi-step estimation with awkward numbers, which makes them the two best mental math drills in the book.
Round aggressively and state your rounding. Interviewers care that you flagged the approximation, not that you carried the decimal.
Tip #5: Always give a recommendation, even when the case does not ask
Several cases end on a calculation rather than a synthesis prompt. Deliver the recommendation anyway, in 30 seconds, with the answer first and two supporting reasons behind it.
In my experience at Bain, the recommendation was often the only part of a case an interviewer could recall clearly an hour later. A candidate who closes cleanly reads as senior, and that impression carries into the debrief.
What Mistakes Do Candidates Make With the INSEAD Casebook?
Casebooks fail candidates in predictable ways, and this one is no exception. Watch for these five:
- Starting here: the book contains almost no teaching content, so opening it before you know case interview frameworks wastes your best practice material
- Reading instead of solving: working through a model answer feels productive and builds no skill
- Treating the sample framework as the right answer: the notes explicitly say there are other valid ways to attack several of the cases
- Skipping the qualitative sections: the brainstorming and risk questions carry as much weight in a real interview as the math does
- Using only one book: 13 cases is roughly two weeks of practice, and most candidates need 30 or more full cases before they are interview ready
One more thing on volume. Across more than 10 years of helping candidates land offers at McKinsey, BCG, and Bain, the candidates who cleared final rounds were rarely the ones who read the most casebooks, they were the ones who repeated the same cases until the pattern stuck.
The INSEAD casebook earns a place in your prep because of its international cases and its brutal quantitative sections, and because the interviewer notes let you grade yourself honestly. Download the 2021 edition, sort the 13 cases by the difficulty rating you are weakest in, and start there rather than at case number one.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the INSEAD casebook free?
Yes. The INSEAD Consulting Club has distributed its casebook free of charge since the first edition in 2005, and current students access it through the club website. Older editions circulate freely on document sharing sites. You should never pay for a copy.
How many cases are in the INSEAD casebook?
The 2021 ICC Casebook contains 13 cases across roughly 140 pages. The 2020 edition contains 8 cases across about 83 pages, and all 8 of those cases were carried forward into the 2021 book. That means the 2021 edition is the only one you need.
Is the INSEAD casebook good for McKinsey, BCG, and Bain interviews?
It is good for practice volume and for quantitative reps, not for learning method. The cases were written by INSEAD students and sponsor firms, and BCG has supported the book since 2005. Use it after you already know how to structure a problem, and pair it with a resource that teaches structuring.
Is the INSEAD casebook too old to be useful?
No. Case interview skills tested at consulting firms have not changed materially, so a 2021 case still trains structuring, math, and synthesis just as well as a new one. The dated element is the context, since several cases reference pandemic era conditions. Read past the dates and focus on the mechanics.
Which casebooks should you use alongside the INSEAD casebook?
Pair it with a US school casebook so you get exposure to both styles. INSEAD gives you international geographies, non dollar currencies, and public sector clients. A US book will give you more consumer and healthcare cases and more standard framework prompts.
Do you need to be an INSEAD student to use the casebook?
No. The casebook is useful to anyone preparing for consulting interviews, including undergraduates, experienced hires, and MBA students at other schools. The cases test the same skills every consulting firm evaluates. The only INSEAD specific content is a case prompt about saving an alumnus job.
