Ivey Casebook: What It Is and Free Download

Author: Taylor Warfield, Former Bain Manager and interviewer

Ivey casebook refers to three different resources: the Ivey Consulting Club's member-only case interview library, the SAGE Ivey Casebook Series of classroom textbooks, and Ivey Publishing's collection of more than 7,500 teaching cases. Only one of those helps you pass a consulting interview, so this article breaks down what each one is.

Key Takeaways

You can download the Ivey casebook here: Ivey 2005.pdf

  • Three separate resources go by the name Ivey casebook, and only the consulting club's library holds real practice cases

  • The Ivey Consulting Club curates 35 casebooks for its 600+ members and publishes none of them publicly

  • The SAGE Ivey Casebook Series is 13 classroom textbooks on leadership, ethics, and operations, priced from $169

  • Ivey Publishing sells 7,500+ teaching cases of 9 to 19 pages each, written for class discussion rather than interviews

  • Free casebooks from other consulting clubs give you 500+ practice cases at no cost

  • Ivey stays a top Canadian feeder to MBB, with dedicated BCG and Bain campus recruiting teams

What Is an Ivey Casebook?

An Ivey casebook is one of three things: the Ivey Consulting Club's member-only library of case interview practice cases, the SAGE Ivey Casebook Series of classroom textbooks, or a bundle of Ivey Publishing teaching cases. Only the first is built for consulting interview preparation, and it is not available to the public.

Resource

What it actually is

Useful for case interviews?

Ivey Consulting Club library

35 curated casebooks plus 250+ pages of club-written recruiting guides

Yes, but members only

SAGE Ivey Casebook Series

13 paid textbooks on leadership, ethics, operations, and marketing

No

Ivey Publishing cases

7,500+ individual teaching cases sold as 9 to 19 page PDFs

No

The confusion is understandable. Ivey Business School at Western University built its reputation on the case method and has taught with it since 1922, so the word case carries two meanings on that campus at once.

One meaning is the academic teaching case. The other is the 30 to 40 minute business problem an interviewer walks you through at McKinsey, BCG, or Bain. Candidates searching for the second one keep landing on the first.

What Does the Ivey Consulting Club Give Its Members?

The Ivey Consulting Club provides members with 35 casebooks, industry summaries, free access to outside prep platforms, and over 250 pages of recruiting guides the club writes itself. Membership consistently runs above 600 HBA students, close to half the HBA student body.

The club also runs bootcamps on mental math, networking, and how to survive case prep season. Its 70+ mentors have already landed consulting internships or full-time roles and volunteer for coffee chats and mock interviews.

Notice what the club is not doing: writing its own cases from scratch. It curates the best casebooks from other schools and adds Ivey-specific recruiting intelligence on top. That tells you something useful about where the real value sits in casebooks, and it is not in the case prompts themselves.

What Is the SAGE Ivey Casebook Series?

The Ivey Casebook Series is a co-publishing partnership between SAGE Publications and Ivey Business School that produced 13 classroom textbooks. Each one collects real Ivey teaching cases around a single business discipline, and paperback list prices run from $169 to $199.

Titles in the series include:

  • Cases in Leadership, now in its fifth edition with 30 cases and 15 practitioner readings

  • Cases in Organizational Behavior, Cases in Business Ethics, and Cases in Operations Management

  • Cases in Entrepreneurship, Cases in Marketing Management, and Cases in Alliance Management

  • Mergers and Acquisitions: Text and Cases, plus Cases in Gender and Diversity in Organizations

These books are excellent for a business school seminar. They are the wrong tool for interview prep, because every case runs 10 to 25 pages and is meant to be read overnight before a class discussion.

What Are Ivey Publishing Case Studies?

Ivey Publishing is the second largest publisher of business teaching cases in the world after Harvard. Its active collection includes over 7,500 cases covering nearly 100 countries, along with more than 2,700 translations, and Ivey adds new cases every month.

Recent releases run 9 to 19 pages and sell individually as PDFs. A student assigned one of these for a class is holding a genuine Ivey case, just not the kind that helps in an interview.

Here is the difference that matters. A teaching case hands you all the data up front and asks you to write or discuss an answer. A case interview hands you one paragraph, hides the data behind questions you have to ask, and grades you on how you think out loud under time pressure.

In my years interviewing candidates at Bain, the people who struggled most were often the ones who had read the most case studies. They knew how to analyze a business problem on paper. They had never practiced doing it in a conversation, with an interviewer interrupting to ask what number they needed next and why.

Is the Ivey Casebook the Same as the Ivy Case System?

No, and this is one of the most common mix-ups in case interview prep. The Ivy Case System is a method created by Marc Cosentino and taught in his book Case in Point, spelled I-v-y after the Ivy League.

Ivey with an e is Ivey Business School at Western University in London, Ontario. If you came here looking for a structured approach to solving cases rather than a school-specific resource, what you want is a working set of case interview frameworks.

Which Casebooks Should You Use for Case Interview Prep?

You can also use the free casebooks that other business school consulting clubs publish every year. There are 26 MBA consulting casebooks available with no signup required, and together they contain over 500 practice cases from schools across North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia.

Not all of them are equally good. Here is where I would start:

Casebook

Best for

When to use it

Kellogg

Full interviewer scripts and detailed model answers

Your first 5 cases

Booth

Clean structure examples and exhibit practice

Cases 5 through 15

Columbia

Quantitative difficulty and math-heavy prompts

Once structure is solid

Wharton and Ross

Volume and variety across industries

Final weeks before interviews

Start with the Kellogg casebook if you are new to cases. Its solutions are written out in enough detail that you can grade yourself honestly, which matters enormously when you are practicing alone.

Move to the Booth casebook once you can build a structure without freezing.

Save the Columbia casebook for later, when you want prompts that punish sloppy arithmetic.

How Do You Practice With a Consulting Casebook?

Reading a casebook cover to cover is the single most common way candidates waste their prep time. You learn cases by doing them out loud, timed, with someone else holding the answer key.

Follow this sequence:

  1. Read the first case fully: prompt, exhibits, and solution, so you understand what a finished case looks like

  2. Do the next case blind: have a partner read the prompt while you take notes and build a structure out loud

  3. Time every section: 60 to 90 seconds for structure, 2 to 3 minutes for a math calculation, 60 seconds for a recommendation

  4. Compare against the model answer: note every branch of the structure you missed and every arithmetic slip

  5. Drill the weak skill alone: run isolated reps on whichever piece broke down rather than doing another full case

That last step is where most candidates go wrong. If your structures are strong and your arithmetic is shaky, doing five more full cases gives you five minutes of math practice. Twenty minutes of pure math drills gives you far more.

If you want to learn cases quickly, my case interview course walks you through proven strategies in as little as 7 days.

No casebook covers every question type well. Most are heavy on profitability and market entry cases and thin on operations, pricing, and brainstorming.

Check the range of case interview types you have actually covered before your first round. A candidate who has only run profitability cases falls apart the moment an interviewer opens with a pricing question.

Casebooks are also a poor way to train estimation. Market sizing questions get one or two pages in most club casebooks, which is nowhere near enough reps for something that shows up in roughly half of first-round interviews.

How Do Ivey Students Break Into Consulting?

Through on-campus recruiting, which is the real advantage Ivey offers and the reason its casebook access matters less than people assume. Both BCG and Bain maintain dedicated Ivey recruiting pages with named contacts, and BCG assigns separate HBA and MBA campus captains to the school.

Those captains are usually recent Ivey graduates. BCG's current HBA co-captain in Toronto was president of the Ivey Consulting Club before joining the firm, which gives you a sense of how directly club involvement feeds the pipeline.

The numbers still make it hard. McKinsey, BCG, and Bain together hire roughly 100 to 150 entry-level consultants a year across all of Canada, and consulting recruiting in Canada concentrates heavily in Toronto.

Mock interviews matter more than reading material at that level of competition. The club's mentor network handles some of this, and my case interview coaching gives you direct feedback from a former Bain interviewer.

Having coached hundreds of candidates one on one, I can tell you the school on the resume gets you the interview and almost nothing after that. The Ivey casebook question is worth answering, but the answer is that you should stop hunting for a file that does not exist and start running timed cases out loud with whatever material you already have. Book your first mock interview this week, because the gap between reading a case and solving one live is far wider than it looks on paper.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a free Ivey casebook PDF?

Yes. You can download the Ivey casebook here: Ivey 2005.pdf

Is the Ivey casebook the same as the Ivy Case System?

No. The Ivy Case System is a case interview method created by Marc Cosentino and taught in his book Case in Point. Ivey refers to Ivey Business School at Western University in London, Ontario. The two are spelled differently and have nothing to do with each other, and searchers frequently confuse them.

Can you use Ivey Publishing cases to prepare for case interviews?

Not effectively. Ivey Publishing cases are 9 to 19 page teaching documents written for classroom discussion, with no interviewer script, no exhibits designed for live analysis, and no model answer. A case interview gives you a one paragraph prompt and expects you to drive the analysis out loud in 30 to 40 minutes. The two formats train completely different skills.

How many casebooks does the Ivey Consulting Club have?

The Ivey Consulting Club provides its members with 35 casebooks, industry summaries, free access to outside prep platforms, and more than 250 pages of recruiting guides written by the club itself. Membership is open to Ivey HBA students and consistently runs above 600 people, close to half the HBA student body.

Do you need to attend Ivey to get consulting interviews in Canada?

No, but Ivey helps. McKinsey, BCG, and Bain together hire roughly 100 to 150 entry-level consultants a year across all of Canada, and Ivey is one of a short list of schools where those firms run dedicated campus recruiting. Both BCG and Bain maintain school-specific Ivey pages with named recruiters. Candidates from other schools break in every year through networking and referrals.

What is the best casebook to start with?

Start with a casebook that includes full interviewer scripts and detailed model answers rather than one that only prints prompts. Kellogg and Booth are strong first picks because their cases are written out in enough detail that you can grade yourself accurately. Save the harder, more ambiguous casebooks for after you have run 10 to 15 practice cases.
