The LEK interview process runs through five stages: an application screen, an online assessment used by some offices, a first round of two candidate-led cases, a final round of two to three cases plus a written case, and an offer decision that averages 19 days from first interview according to 2026 Glassdoor data. This article breaks down what happens at each stage, who sits across from you, how the process shifts by role and region, and which steps candidates consistently underestimate.

Key Takeaways

LEK uses two live interview rounds, bookended by an application screen, an office-dependent online assessment, and an offer decision that lands faster than at most firms.

  • Round one is two candidate-led cases of 30 to 45 minutes, and the final round adds two or three more plus a written case

  • Glassdoor put the average LEK hiring process at 19 days across 551 reported interviews in 2026

  • The online assessment is not universal, so confirm with your recruiter rather than assuming your office uses one

  • Fit questions sit inside each case rather than in a separate behavioral round

  • You may apply to only one LEK global office per year, which makes office choice a real strategic decision

  • Candidates rate the difficulty 3.31 out of 5, and 61% describe the experience as positive

What Is the LEK Interview Process?

The LEK interview process is a two-round case interview process used for strategy consulting roles. After a resume and cover letter screen, and an online math assessment at some offices, you complete two candidate-led cases in the first round and two to three cases plus a 60-minute written case in the final round. Fit questions are folded into every interview.

LEK describes the process on its own application page as several rounds mixing experiential and case interviews, with both quantitative and strategic cases possible. The firm also says the process differs slightly by region and by the level you are applying for. That caveat matters more at LEK than at most firms, and I will show you exactly where the differences show up.

Some context explains why the cases feel the way they do. LEK was founded in 1983 by James Lawrence, Iain Evans, and Richard Koch, three partners who left Bain, and it now runs 27 offices across the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia Pacific. Its work skews heavily toward private equity due diligence and life sciences, which is why the cases lean quantitative and data-first rather than framework-first.

That specialization also explains where LEK sits in the market. Among tier 2 consulting firms, it is one of the few that competes with MBB head-on for commercial due diligence work, and the interview bar reflects that.

What Are the Stages of the LEK Interview Process?

There are five stages between your application and an offer. Each one screens for something different, and each one has a different failure mode.

  1. Application: resume and cover letter submitted through LEK's online system, reviewed by the recruiting team

  2. Online assessment: a timed math, logic, or psychometric test, used by some offices and skipped by others

  3. First round: two candidate-led cases with fit questions built in, run by junior and mid-level staff

  4. Final round: two or three cases with senior staff, plus a written case in most offices

  5. Offer decision: a verbal offer or a rejection, often delivered within days

How Does the LEK Application and Resume Screen Work?

LEK screens you on a resume and cover letter submitted through its online application system, and the firm states that it reviews every application it receives. Recruiters look for academic performance, evidence of analytical work, and results you can put a number on. Having coached hundreds of candidates through consulting applications, I can tell you the single biggest lever at this stage is quantifying outcomes rather than listing responsibilities.

One rule catches people out every cycle. LEK states that candidates may submit an application to only one of its global offices per year, so a rejection in New York closes London and Boston for that cycle too. Pick the office you actually want before you hit submit.

The screen itself is unforgiving because LEK is a firm where analytical credibility gets decided on paper first. A strong LEK resume leads with impact statements that carry real figures, not adjectives.

Your cover letter carries more weight here than at firms with larger application volumes. Use it to name the specific LEK practice you want, because a generic LEK cover letter that could be sent to any firm reads as low interest.

An internal advocate helps more than most candidates expect at a firm this size. An LEK referral puts your file in front of a human rather than leaving it in a queue.

What Is the LEK Online Assessment Stage?

Some LEK offices run an online assessment between the resume screen and the first round, and some skip it entirely. Reported formats include a short game-based aptitude test, a timed numerical and logical reasoning exam, and a psychometric plus math combination. There is no single firmwide test, so any guide that names one universal LEK assessment is wrong.

The regional spread is easy to see in candidate accounts. A first-year associate in LEK's London office described the process on the firm's careers blog as multiple rounds including online psychometric and math exams before any face-to-face case. Glassdoor reports from continental Europe describe a written online test of mathematical and logical questions as the opening stage, and Life Sciences Specialist candidates describe a numbers exercise in the initial screen.

Treat this stage as a real filter rather than a formality. It is a direct read on the exact skill LEK cares about most, which is whether you can move through data quickly and accurately under a clock. Practicing case math without a calculator is the highest-return preparation you can do for it.

The game-based version of the LEK digital assessment runs roughly 10 minutes and measures mental math, pattern recognition, and logical reasoning. Confirm with your recruiter whether your office includes it rather than assuming either way.

What Happens in the LEK First Round Interview?

The LEK first round is two back-to-back candidate-led cases, each running 30 to 45 minutes, with fit questions folded into the opening or closing minutes. Interviewers are usually Associates, Senior Associates, and Consultants. Candidates who advance often hear within hours rather than days.

The cases themselves are standardized. Glassdoor reports from associate candidates describe receiving the same case bank as every other applicant at that level, with the specific case randomized across industries. That standardization is good news: it means your performance is compared on a level field, and it means practicing the common case types genuinely covers you.

Expect one case to open with sizing. Market sizing is LEK's signature opener, and it typically feeds into a pricing or investment decision instead of standing alone as a puzzle.

The second case tends to be profitability, growth, or market entry. Reported prompts include standard profitability diagnostics, break-even analysis, and estimating annual unit sales for a product in a specific country. The math is layered rather than difficult in isolation, which means one dropped assumption early cascades through everything after it.

Structure matters more than the final number here. LEK cares about whether you can break a problem into clean, testable pieces, which is why practicing case interview frameworks as adaptable building blocks beats memorizing templates.

If you want to learn case interviews quickly, my case interview course walks you through proven strategies in as little as 7 days.

The fit portion is short but scored. Because there is no standalone behavioral round, every interviewer is grading your motivation and your stories alongside your casing, and the LEK behavioral interview questions cluster tightly around why consulting, why LEK, and one story about overcoming difficulty.

What Happens in the LEK Final Round Interview?

The LEK final round is two or three cases with Managers, Principals, and Partners, plus a written case in most offices. Sessions run longer and the questioning gets adversarial by design. Total time on the day commonly reaches three to four hours.

The tone shift is the part candidates are least ready for. Glassdoor reports describe first-round cases as standard and final-round interviews as flexible stress tests, where partners and managers push back on your answers and follow up until something breaks. Holding a position under pressure while staying genuinely open to new data is exactly what is being measured.

One quirk worth knowing: your final-round interviewers may not be from the office you applied to. Candidate accounts describe casing with managers from several different locations rather than the local partner, which is normal at a firm that staffs regionally.

The written case is the defining feature. You receive a data packet, analyze it alone for roughly 60 minutes, build a short slide deck, and present a recommendation before taking questions. Glassdoor reports from New York also describe a take-home work plan paired with the written exercise in some cycles.

Strong verbal casers stumble here more than anywhere else in the process. The written case interview rewards triage above all: deciding in the first ten minutes which exhibits actually answer the question, then ignoring the rest.

Lead with your answer on the first slide and let every slide title state a conclusion rather than a topic. Partners in the LEK final round interview score synthesis and judgment far more heavily than exhaustive analysis.

How Long Does the LEK Interview Process Take?

The LEK interview process averages 19 days from first interview to decision, based on 551 candidate-reported interviews on Glassdoor in 2026. The full journey from application to offer typically runs two to three months. Speed varies significantly by role.

Two patterns are worth acting on. MBA-track Summer Consultant candidates report both the hardest interviews and the longest wait at 36 days, so plan your other offer deadlines accordingly. Undergraduate Associate candidates, the largest reported group at 188 interviews, move fastest at 17 days.

The tail end can be extremely fast. Candidates describe getting a call within three hours of the first round with a final-round invitation, then a verbal offer the next day. Do not schedule your LEK final round for a week when you cannot prepare hard, because the gap may be days rather than weeks.

Campus timing is more predictable than the interview turnaround. For summer roles, applications open in late June through August, first rounds fall in September and October, and final rounds run October into November, which fits the broader consulting recruiting timeline for the following summer.

How Does the LEK Interview Process Differ by Role and Region?

The two-round shape holds across roles, but the entry point, the screening step, and the emphasis shift. LEK says directly that the process differs by region and by level, so verify specifics with your recruiter rather than assuming the American undergraduate track applies to you.

Entry point

Who it is for

What is different

Associate

Undergraduates and master's students

Standard two rounds, with a shared case bank across all applicants at the level

Consultant

MBA graduates

Same shape, heavier weight on the written case and on partner pushback

Life Sciences Specialist

PhD, MD, and PharmD candidates

Screening includes a numbers exercise, and cases skew biopharma and diligence

Summer Associate

Rising seniors

Identical format, run September through November for the following summer

Experienced hire

Working professionals and laterals

Recruiter call first, then two mini cases with Senior Associates, then a senior round

Two LEK programs offer a genuine shortcut. Link to L.E.K. is an immersive program for PhD, MD, and PharmD candidates in the life sciences, and while LEK states it is not evaluative, accepted participants receive an accelerated invitation to final-round interviews for Life Sciences Specialist roles. That is a full round of risk removed.

Undergraduates have a comparable on-ramp in Kaleidoscope, a two-day virtual program for sophomores and juniors that includes practice case interviews and panels with Associates through Managing Directors. Applications for the January 2026 cohort closed in late November 2025, so watch the window a full year before you plan to recruit.

Interns are evaluated on the same bar as full-time hires. The LEK internship feeds directly into full-time offers, which is why the summer track carries the same case and written case format as the associate track.

What Does LEK Look For in Its Interviews?

LEK publishes its interview objectives, which is rare and worth reading closely. The firm says its interviews exist to get to know you, learn how you think about business issues relevant to its work, understand your strengths, gain insight into your motivation for consulting and for LEK specifically, and give you a chance to evaluate the firm.

Notice what is missing from that list. There is no mention of reaching the correct answer. The London associate quoted on LEK's careers blog made the same point after a market sizing case where he sized weddings as though each attendee had one, and the manager laughed it off because the methodology was sound.

LEK also publishes seven in-case behaviors it wants to see, and they read like a scoring rubric.

  • Take your time: repeat or paraphrase the question, then state your assumptions and restate the facts

  • Gather your thoughts: write down preliminary ideas and build a coherent approach before speaking

  • Stick to your approach: outline your thinking and work through each issue point by point

  • Ask questions: clarify scope and request the specific information you need

  • Formulate hypotheses: share your reasoning out loud as information gets revealed

  • Commit to an answer: pick a course of action while staying willing to rethink it against new data

  • Be yourself: the firm lists this alongside the analytical behaviors, not as an afterthought

The firm also posts three sample cases on its careers site with no answers attached: an aircraft brainteaser about passing planes between New York and Los Angeles, a brewery case about why one competitor's profits fluctuate more than another's, and a pharmaceutical case asking you to size and price a baldness cure. Working all three end to end is the closest thing to an official practice set that exists.

How Should You Prepare for the LEK Interview Process?

Preparation should mirror the process: math first, structure second, slides third, stories throughout. Here are the seven moves that matter most, in the order I would run them.

Tip #1: Build math speed before you build frameworks

LEK screens on numbers earlier and harder than most firms. Drill percentages, growth rates, and break-even calculations until you can run them out loud without a calculator.

The compounding matters because LEK cases layer their math. Market growth multiplied by penetration multiplied by price is where a single rounding error becomes a wrong recommendation.

Tip #2: Master market sizing as a setup, not a party trick

Most candidates practice sizing as a standalone estimate and stop at the number. At LEK the number is the input to a pricing call or an investment decision.

Practice finishing every sizing exercise with a sentence about what the number means for the client. That one habit separates candidates who pass from candidates who calculate.

Tip #3: Practice the written case under a real clock

Reading about the written case does nothing. Print a 40-page data pack, set a 60-minute timer, and force yourself to produce eight to ten slides.

Do this at least three times before your final round. The first attempt will run over, the second will be rushed, and the third is where the triage instinct actually forms.

Tip #4: Prepare for pushback specifically

Final-round interviewers challenge answers to see whether you fold or dig in. Have a practice partner argue against your recommendation for five straight minutes.

The correct response is neither capitulation nor stubbornness. State what would change your mind, then explain why the current evidence does not.

Tip #5: Learn LEK's sector vocabulary

Cases skew toward life sciences, MedTech, private equity due diligence, consumer, and industrials. Knowing what commercial due diligence means, and why a private equity client cares about right to win, changes how you open a case.

Read a handful of the firm's published insights in the practice you are targeting. It shows up in the fit conversation as much as the case.

Tip #6: Prepare three stories, not ten

Fit questions get a few minutes inside each case, so depth beats breadth. Prepare one leadership story, one story about overcoming difficulty, and a sharp answer to why LEK.

My fit interview course covers 98% of consulting behavioral questions in a few hours if you want the full set.

Tip #7: Get feedback from someone who has interviewed candidates

Peer practice catches structural errors but misses the things that actually sink candidates: pacing, synthesis, and the quality of your final recommendation. Those need a trained ear.

If you want feedback from a former interviewer, my case interview coaching sessions run full cases and score you against the rubric firms actually use.

The LEK interview process rewards candidates who prepare for its specific shape rather than generic case practice, because the numerical screen and the written case are where the field thins out. Start with timed math drills this week, then build toward full written case simulations before your final round. If you do only one thing differently, make it running three timed written cases under a clock.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many rounds does the LEK interview process have?

LEK runs two live interview rounds. The first round is two candidate-led cases of roughly 30 to 45 minutes each, run by Associates, Senior Associates, and Consultants. The final round adds two or three more cases with Managers, Principals, and Partners, and most offices include a written case. Some offices add a short recruiter screen before the first round.

Is the LEK interview hard?

Candidates rate LEK interviews 3.31 out of 5 for difficulty on Glassdoor, based on 551 reported interviews in 2026, and 61% describe the experience as positive. Difficulty varies by role. Summer Consultant applicants rate the process hardest at 3.7 out of 5, while Associate Consultant applicants rate it 3.2.

Does LEK have an online assessment or test?

Some LEK offices use an online assessment and some do not. Reported formats include a game-based aptitude test, a timed numerical and logical reasoning test, and psychometric plus math exams. The London process has included online psychometric and math testing before the case interviews, according to an LEK associate interviewed on the firm's careers blog.

How long does LEK take to get back to you after an interview?

LEK moves quickly. Glassdoor data from 2026 puts the full process at an average of 19 days across 551 reported interviews. Candidate reports describe first-round results arriving within hours in some cases, and verbal offers landing the day after the final round.

Can you apply to more than one LEK office?

No. LEK states on its application page that candidates can submit an application to only one of its global offices per year. Choose your office before you apply, because a rejection in one office closes the door on the others for that cycle.

Are LEK cases candidate-led or interviewer-led?

LEK cases are candidate-led, meaning you drive the structure and decide what to analyze next. Interviewers probe hard on your math and your logic along the way. Market sizing is the signature LEK opener, and it usually feeds a pricing or investment decision rather than standing alone.

What is the LEK written case interview?

The LEK written case is a timed exercise in the final round where you receive a data packet, analyze it alone for about 60 minutes, build a short slide deck, and present a recommendation. Interviewers then challenge your conclusions. Candidate reports on Glassdoor also describe a take-home work plan paired with the written case in some offices.
