MBB application deadlines

MBB application deadlines for 2026 and 2027 have shifted earlier than ever, with some windows opening as early as January and closing by March. This is the complete, updated list of every McKinsey, BCG, and Bain application deadline for internships, full-time roles, MBA programs, advanced degree positions, experienced hires, and diversity initiatives.

If you are recruiting for consulting in 2026 or 2027, bookmark this page. We update it as new deadlines are confirmed throughout the year.

But first, a quick heads up:

McKinsey, BCG, Bain, and other top firms accept less than 1% of applicants every year. If you want to triple your chances of landing interviews and 8x your chances of passing them, watch my free 40-minute training.

What Changed in 2026?

The biggest shift in 2026 is timing. All three MBB firms have moved their application deadlines earlier by one to two months compared to previous years. Here is what is different this cycle.

Deadlines moved up significantly. McKinsey opened its 2027 intern application portal on January 1, 2026, with a national deadline of March 29. In prior years, intern deadlines did not arrive until July. According to university career centers across the country, this is the earliest MBB recruiting cycle on record.

Bain introduced a two-window system. For the first time, Bain is offering two distinct application windows for its Associate Consultant Intern role: a spring window closing March 29, 2026, and a fall window closing August 31, 2026. Bain's own messaging encourages candidates to apply when they feel ready rather than rushing into the earlier deadline.

Rolling review is now the norm. Multiple firms now review applications on a rolling basis rather than waiting until the deadline closes. Based on data from Glassdoor and university career offices, applying in the first week after a portal opens can increase your chances of getting an interview by 20% to 30% compared to applying near the deadline.

When Are MBB Application Deadlines?

MBB application deadlines depend on your candidate type. Undergraduate and master's students face the earliest windows, while experienced hires can apply year-round. The table below shows the general recruiting timeline for each group.

Undergraduate and Non-MBA Master's Students

Recruitment for undergrads and non-MBA master's students now starts as early as March and runs through September. For internships, undergraduates must be in their junior year. For full-time roles, seniors and final-year master's students should apply. Consulting firms hire roughly a year in advance, so if you graduate in 2027, you are applying in 2026.

In my experience as a Bain interviewer, more than 60% of interview slots were filled from the first application deadline. If your materials are ready, apply early.

MBA Students

MBA recruiting follows two tracks. First-year MBAs apply for summer internships between November and December. Second-year MBAs apply for full-time roles between August and September. According to data from top MBA programs, over 25% of MBA offers at MBB come through pre-MBA programs like McKinsey Inspire, Experience Bain, and BCG Unlock, so those spring deadlines matter.

Advanced Degree Holders

PhD, MD, and JD candidates have two recruiting windows. Bridge and immersion programs open from February to April and are designed for candidates in their penultimate year. Full-time applications open from June to September for final-year candidates and recent graduates.

Experienced Hires

MBB recruits experienced hires year-round with no fixed deadlines. However, the period from March to May is the best time to apply. This is because experienced hire recruiting fills positions left open after the undergraduate and MBA cycles. Having coached hundreds of experienced hire candidates, I can tell you that about 40% of experienced hire interviews happen in that March to May window.

What Are the MBB Deadlines for Diversity and Early Access Programs?

All three MBB firms run diversity, women's leadership, and early access programs that can give you a significant advantage in recruiting. Many of these programs lead directly to internship or full-time interview invitations. Based on firm data, participants in these programs receive offers at roughly 2x the rate of general applicants.

When Do MBB Applications Open?

Knowing when the portal opens is just as important as knowing when it closes. In 2026, McKinsey opened its application portal for 2027 intern roles on January 1, 2026. This was months earlier than prior cycles.

Here is a general guide to when each firm's portal typically opens.

Firm

Undergrad / Master's Portal Opens

MBA Portal Opens

McKinsey

January to May (varies by role)

July to August

BCG

April to June (varies by role)

August to September

Bain

February to May (varies by role)

August to September

The best way to stay informed is to create an account on each firm's career portal and enable email alerts. You should also check with your university's career center, since campus-specific deadlines can differ from the national ones.

What Happens After You Apply to MBB?

After submitting your application, most candidates hear back within two to four weeks. Here is the typical post-application process at each firm.

McKinsey: After your application is reviewed, you will receive an invitation to take the McKinsey Solve assessment (formerly the Problem Solving Game). This is a digital assessment that tests your problem solving and critical thinking skills. If you pass the Solve, you move to first-round interviews. According to McKinsey, roughly 30% of applicants are invited to the Solve, and about 50% of those advance to interviews.

BCG: BCG uses the Casey chatbot assessment as an initial screen for some candidate pools. If invited, you complete the Casey assessment online before moving to first-round interviews. BCG reviews applications on a rolling basis, so earlier applicants tend to hear back faster.

Bain: Bain reviews applications after each deadline and typically sends interview invitations two to three weeks later. Bain's process moves directly from application review to first-round interviews for most candidate types. At Bain, we reviewed applications in batches after each deadline closed, so applying by the first deadline gave you the best shot at being seen before interview slots filled up.

For all three firms, first-round interviews typically happen within four to six weeks of the application deadline. Final-round interviews follow one to two weeks after first-round results. For a full breakdown of what to expect in consulting interviews, check out our consulting recruiting timeline.

Do Target and Non-Target Schools Have Different Deadlines?

Yes. MBB firms maintain lists of target schools where they conduct on-campus recruiting. If you attend a target school, your deadlines may be school-specific and can differ from the national deadlines listed above.

McKinsey, BCG, and Bain all publish campus-specific deadlines through platforms like Handshake, 12Twenty, and their own campus recruiting portals. Always check your university career center for your specific deadline.

If you attend a non-target school, you can still apply. Contact the recruiting coordinator at the specific office you want to join. You can find these contacts on LinkedIn or on the firm's careers page. According to data from McKinsey's own website, about 30% of their North American hires come from non-target schools.

Should You Apply in the Early or Late Window?

Several MBB programs now offer two application windows. Bain explicitly offers a spring and fall window for its Associate Consultant Intern position. BCG has historically offered an early summer and early fall window for its Summer Associate role.

The short answer: apply early if your materials are ready. In my experience reviewing applications at Bain, first-window applicants had a meaningful advantage because more interview slots were available and reviewers had more bandwidth.

That said, Bain's own recruiting team states that both windows are legitimate options. If you need more time to explore firms, clarify your goals, or prepare for case interviews, the later window is a perfectly valid choice. A strong application in the second window will beat a weak application in the first window every time.

If you are unsure, here is a simple rule of thumb. If your resume is polished, you have done at least 10 practice cases, and you can clearly articulate why consulting, apply in the first window. If any of those are not true, use the extra time.

How Should You Prepare Before MBB Deadlines?

With deadlines now arriving months earlier than in past years, your preparation timeline needs to start sooner too. Here is a month-by-month guide for undergraduate and master's candidates applying in the 2026 cycle.

Timeline

What to Focus On

6+ months before deadline

Start networking with consultants and alumni. Attend firm events. Begin case interview practice.

4 to 5 months before

Finalize your resume. Get feedback from career centers and consultants you know. Start practicing cases 3 to 5 times per week.

2 to 3 months before

Polish your cover letter. Complete 15 to 20 practice cases. Research firm culture and office preferences.

1 month before

Submit your application as early as possible. Continue case prep. Prepare for the McKinsey Solve and BCG Casey assessments.

After applying

Ramp up interview prep. Do mock interviews with consultants. Prepare your fit interview stories.

If you want to fast-track your case interview prep, my case interview course teaches you proven strategies in as little as 7 days, saving yourself hundreds of hours of trial and error.

How to Prepare Your MBB Application Materials

Most MBB applications require the same set of materials. Here is what you need and how to make each piece stand out.

What Does an MBB Application Require?

A standard MBB application includes the following.

  • Resume: This is the most critical component. Keep it to one page. Start each bullet with a past-tense action verb. Include numbers and metrics in every bullet. Balance quantitative and qualitative accomplishments.

  • Cover letter: Not always required, but a strong cover letter can help borderline candidates. Open with a specific hook. Explain why this firm and this office. Do not repeat your resume.

  • Test scores: Some applications ask for self-reported SAT, ACT, GMAT, GRE, MCAT, or LSAT scores. You do not need an official score report. Just enter your numerical scores and sub-score breakdowns.

  • Transcripts: An unofficial transcript showing your coursework and GPA is sufficient. A PDF downloaded from your school's student portal works.

  • Office preferences: All applications ask for your top three office preferences with percentage weights totaling 100%. MBB typically only considers candidates for their top-choice office, so choose carefully.

What Should You Do If You Miss an MBB Application Deadline?

Missing an MBB deadline is disappointing, but it is not the end of your consulting career. Here is what to do next.

1. Check for a second application window. Bain and BCG often offer two deadlines for the same role. If you missed the first one, you may still be able to apply for the second.

2. Contact a recruiter. Reach out to the firm's recruiting team. Be professional and brief. Explain your situation and ask if there is any flexibility or if off-cycle positions are available.

3. Explore other top firms. Firms like Oliver Wyman, Kearney, L.E.K., and Strategy& have strong reputations and often have different or more flexible timelines. The Big 4 strategy practices (Deloitte S&O, PwC Strategy&, EY-Parthenon) recruit year-round.

4. Prepare for the next cycle. Use the extra time to strengthen your profile. Gain relevant experience. Build your network with consultants and alumni. Start practicing case interviews and behavioral interview questions so you are fully prepared when the next window opens.

5. Consider the experienced hire path. If you have two or more years of work experience, you can apply as an experienced hire year-round. This path bypasses the structured campus recruiting cycle entirely.

Frequently Asked Questions

When do MBB applications open for undergraduates?

MBB applications for undergraduates typically open between January and May, depending on the firm and the specific role. McKinsey opened its 2027 intern portal on January 1, 2026. BCG and Bain portals generally open between March and May. Always check each firm's career page for the exact opening date.

Can I apply to McKinsey, BCG, and Bain at the same time?

Yes. There is no rule against applying to all three MBB firms simultaneously. In fact, most competitive candidates apply to all three. Each firm has its own application portal and interview process, so there is no overlap or conflict. Applying to multiple firms also gives you more practice with case interviews and increases your odds of landing at least one offer.

What GPA do I need to apply to MBB?

MBB firms do not publish official GPA cutoffs. However, based on data from Glassdoor and university career centers, most successful candidates have a GPA of 3.5 or higher. A 3.7 or above is considered strong. That said, a lower GPA can be offset by strong work experience, leadership roles, and impressive test scores.

How long does MBB take to respond after I apply?

Most candidates hear back within two to four weeks of the application deadline. McKinsey sends Solve assessment invitations first, while BCG and Bain move directly to interview invitations. If you have not heard back after four weeks, it is appropriate to send a polite follow-up email to the recruiting team.

Do MBB firms accept applications from non-target schools?

Yes. All three MBB firms accept applications from non-target schools. According to McKinsey, approximately 30% of their North American hires come from non-target institutions. If your school is not listed on the firm's campus recruiting portal, contact the recruiting coordinator at the office you want to join. Networking with firm alumni from your school can also help get your application noticed.

What is the best time to apply as an experienced hire?

The best time to apply as an experienced hire is March to May. This is when MBB firms have the most open positions because they are filling gaps from the undergraduate and MBA recruiting cycles. Having coached hundreds of experienced hire candidates, I have seen the highest success rates from candidates who apply in April and have a referral from someone at the firm.

Are MBB deadlines the same every year?

No. MBB deadlines shift from year to year, and the trend in recent years has been toward earlier deadlines. In the 2026 cycle, deadlines moved one to two months earlier than previous years. This is why it is important to check firm career pages and university career centers for the most current dates rather than relying on last year's schedule.
