MBB Target Schools: Complete List for McKinsey, BCG, Bain

MBB target schools are the universities where McKinsey, BCG, and Bain concentrate their recruiting efforts through on-campus events, dedicated recruiters, and structured interview pipelines. Attending a target school significantly increases your odds of landing an interview at one of these top three consulting firms.
In this article, I will share the complete tiered list of MBB target schools for both undergraduates and MBAs, explain how each firm's target list differs, and give you actionable strategies whether you attend a target school or not. Having coached hundreds of candidates from both target and non-target backgrounds during my time at Bain, I have seen firsthand what actually moves the needle in consulting recruiting.
But first, a quick heads up:
McKinsey, BCG, Bain, and other top firms accept less than 1% of applicants every year. If you want to triple your chances of landing interviews and 8x your chances of passing them, watch my free 40-minute training.
What Are MBB Target Schools?
MBB target schools are universities and business schools where McKinsey, BCG, and Bain actively invest in recruiting. At these schools, the firms host information sessions, case workshops, coffee chats, and on-campus interviews. They also assign dedicated recruiters and teams of alumni to review applications from each target campus.
The logic is straightforward. According to an analysis of over 4,700 MBB hires, the universities that contribute the most consulting hires are the same institutions that sit at the top of national rankings. These schools produce candidates with strong analytical training, active consulting clubs, and deep alumni networks inside MBB firms. Recruiting from these campuses is simply more efficient for the firms.
None of the three firms publicly release an official target school list. That would discourage strong candidates at non-target schools from applying. However, we can identify target schools through three reliable signals: which schools qualify for pre-MBA immersion programs (McKinsey Early Access, BCG Unlock, ExperienceBain), which campuses host MBB recruiting events, and LinkedIn placement data showing where junior consultants went to school.
Being at a target school does not guarantee an interview. Based on my experience, even at top target schools only about 15% to 25% of applicants receive first-round interviews. The advantage is access, not a free pass. You still need a strong GPA, compelling resume, and polished case interview skills to earn an offer.
What Are the MBB Target Schools for Undergraduates?
Undergraduate recruiting is the largest hiring channel for MBB firms in the United States. Pre-experience students (those with a bachelor's or non-MBA master's degree) made up roughly 45% of all MBB hires from 2020 to 2022. At Bain specifically, that figure reached 56%. Understanding which undergraduate schools the firms target can shape your entire recruiting strategy.
Which Schools Are the Top Undergraduate Targets for MBB?
Based on LinkedIn placement data from roughly 3,000 MBB consultants who graduated between 2014 and 2020, undergraduate target schools fall into clear tiers. The table below organizes them by approximate total MBB placements over that seven-year window.
Tier |
Schools |
Approx. Hires |
Top Targets |
Harvard, University of Pennsylvania (Wharton) |
150+ each |
Targets |
Yale, University of Michigan, Stanford, MIT, Duke, Princeton, Northwestern, UC Berkeley, Dartmouth |
80 to 100 each |
Weaker Targets |
Columbia, Georgetown, Cornell, Notre Dame, UVA, Vanderbilt, BYU, Boston College, UT Austin |
50 to 80 each |
Semi-Targets |
USC, Emory, UNC, Brown, Georgia Tech, Rice, Washington University in St. Louis, Claremont McKenna, Williams |
20 to 50 each |
Harvard and Penn stand out by producing roughly twice as many MBB hires as any other single school. Their dominance extends across both consulting and investment banking recruiting, making them arguably the two strongest undergraduate schools for elite business careers overall.
The "Targets" tier sends approximately 10 to 15 students per year into MBB. These schools have even representation across all three firms and strong on-campus consulting ecosystems. Notably, Stanford and MIT rank higher here than in investment banking, suggesting consulting is relatively more popular at traditionally prestigious research universities.
Which Liberal Arts Colleges Place Well into MBB?
Small liberal arts colleges deserve a separate look because their raw placement numbers are low, but their per-capita rates can be impressive. When adjusting for graduating class size, schools like Claremont McKenna, Williams, and Amherst rank alongside major universities in the percentage of graduates entering MBB.
Claremont McKenna, for example, had approximately 14 MBB placements over seven years from a graduating class of roughly 300. That per-capita rate rivals schools with ten times the enrollment. Williams and Amherst show similar patterns. Davidson and Middlebury also appear in the data with small but consistent placement numbers.
The caveat is that at a school placing only 1 to 2 graduates per firm per year, you need to be among the very top candidates in your class. There is less room for error compared to a large target school where the firms hire 10+ students annually.
Does Each MBB Firm Have Different Target Schools?
Yes. While there is significant overlap, each firm has distinct preferences. Based on Wall Street Oasis survey data from over 1,500 consulting professionals and other public analyses, the top feeder schools differ slightly across firms.
Firm |
Top Feeder Schools (Undergraduate) |
Notable Pattern |
McKinsey |
Penn, Yale, Michigan, Stanford, Duke, Princeton |
Fewest target schools of the three. Strongest resume filter. |
BCG |
Penn, Yale, MIT, LSE, Northwestern, Michigan |
Largest international recruiting presence. Harvard is BCG's top overall source (7% of hires). |
Bain |
UC Berkeley (8% of recruits), Penn, Michigan, Notre Dame, Harvard |
Broadest target list. Heaviest undergraduate hiring (56% of all US hires). |
One practical takeaway: if your school has a weak relationship with McKinsey but a stronger one with Bain or BCG, focus your energy accordingly. At the semi-target level, school-to-firm relationships can vary dramatically. USC, for instance, has virtually no presence at McKinsey but places students into BCG and Bain.
What Are the MBB Target Schools for MBAs?
MBA recruiting follows a more transparent target school system because each MBB firm runs invitation-only pre-MBA programs. The schools eligible for these programs give us a reliable proxy for the MBA target list.
Which MBA Programs Are Core Targets for MBB?
McKinsey Early Access, BCG Unlock, and ExperienceBain are pre-MBA programs that introduce incoming MBA students to each firm. Only students at qualifying schools can apply. Using these program eligibility lists, we can identify the following MBA-level targets.

McKinsey has the most selective list at roughly 17 schools. BCG includes around 27, and Bain is the broadest with approximately 30 qualifying programs. All three firms recruit globally from INSEAD and London Business School regardless of which US office you target.
What Percentage of MBB Hires Come from MBA Programs?
MBA hires represent roughly 35% to 40% of MBB's total US hiring. According to Wharton's most recent career report, about 29% of the graduating class entered consulting, with McKinsey, BCG, and Bain ranking among the school's top employers.
Half of all MBA hires into MBB's US offices come from just five schools: Wharton, Kellogg, Booth, Harvard Business School, and Columbia Business School. If you are at one of these programs, you are in the single best position to recruit for MBB. The remaining hires come from the other target programs listed above and, increasingly, from non-target schools through experienced hire and direct application channels.
How Do You Check If Your School Is an MBB Target?
If you are unsure whether your school is a target for McKinsey, BCG, or Bain, there are four reliable ways to find out.
- Check MBB career pages. Visit the careers section of mckinsey.com, bcg.com, and bain.com. Look for "Events" or "On Campus" pages and search for your university. If your school shows upcoming recruiting events, it is a target.
- Search LinkedIn. Go to LinkedIn and search for people who attended your school and currently work at McKinsey, BCG, or Bain. If you find a meaningful number of recent graduates (10+ in the past five years), your school likely has a recruiting relationship with that firm.
- Ask your career services office. Career services teams at target schools maintain direct relationships with MBB recruiters. They will know which firms recruit on campus and can connect you to alumni contacts at each firm.
- Look for consulting clubs. Target schools almost always have active, student-run consulting clubs that host case workshops, mock interviews, and networking events with MBB professionals. If your school has one, it is a strong signal that firms recruit there.
In my experience at Bain, every target school had at least one of these signals. If none of the four apply to your school, you are most likely at a non-target. But that does not mean you cannot break into MBB. It just means your path will look different.
Can You Get into MBB from a Non-Target School?
Yes. Every year, hundreds of candidates join McKinsey, BCG, and Bain from schools not on any target list. In fact, the firms have been expanding their recruiting pools as competition for talent intensifies. The key difference is that at a non-target school, you will not have the built-in recruiting infrastructure. You need to create your own path.
What Strategies Help Non-Target Candidates Land MBB Interviews?
The resume screen is the hardest barrier for non-target candidates. Once you get an interview, your school becomes far less relevant. Here are the most effective strategies I have seen work for non-target candidates.
- Maintain a high GPA. Most MBB firms use a GPA cutoff around 3.5 for undergraduate applicants. If you are not at a target school, your GPA needs to be at or above this threshold to survive the initial screen.
- Network with purpose. Reach out to MBB consultants on LinkedIn, attend public firm events, and seek informational conversations. A referral from a current consultant can move your resume to the top of the pile. Focus on building genuine relationships, not collecting contacts.
- Build a standout resume. Quantify every accomplishment on your resume. Lead case competitions, take leadership roles in campus organizations, and pursue internships that demonstrate analytical and problem-solving skills. If you want expert help, consider a resume review service to make sure your application stands out.
- Apply through experienced hire channels. If you are a working professional, MBB firms all accept direct applications from experienced hires. Experienced hires made up about 16% of MBB US hires between 2020 and 2022. McKinsey hired the most through this channel at 19% of total hires.
- Master your case interviews. Non-target candidates who land interviews often outperform target school candidates because they prepare more intensely. Invest heavily in case interview preparation and behavioral interview preparation so you perform at an elite level once you get your shot.
What MBB Diversity Programs Help Non-Target Candidates?
All three MBB firms run diversity and inclusion programs that are open to candidates from a wide range of schools, including non-targets. These programs provide mentorship, networking access, and in some cases an alternate path to an interview.
Program |
Firm |
Who It Serves |
Sophomore Diversity Leaders Internship |
McKinsey |
Second-year undergrads from underrepresented backgrounds |
Bridge to Consulting |
BCG |
First-generation college students and diverse backgrounds |
BCG Unlock (diversity track) |
BCG |
Black, Hispanic/Latino, and Native American students |
Building Entrepreneurial Leaders (BEL) |
Bain |
Black, Hispanic/Latino, and Native American undergrads |
ADvantage |
Bain |
Advanced degree candidates from underrepresented backgrounds |
These programs are competitive in their own right, but they offer a genuine path into MBB that does not depend on attending a specific school. Check each firm's careers page for application deadlines, which typically fall in the September to January window.
What Should You Do at a Target School to Maximize Your Chances?
Being at a target school gives you access, but it does not guarantee results. In my experience interviewing candidates at Bain, I saw plenty of target school students get rejected because they assumed access was enough. Here is what the successful ones did differently.
- Join your school's consulting club early. The best consulting clubs run structured case prep programs, host alumni panels, and organize mock interviews. Getting involved freshman or sophomore year gives you a two-year head start on building your network and skills.
- Attend every MBB event on campus. Information sessions, case workshops, and coffee chats are opportunities to meet consultants and make a positive impression. Roughly 80% of your peers will skip these events. Showing up consistently signals genuine interest and helps recruiters remember your name.
- Start case prep 8 to 12 weeks before your interview. Most target school students underestimate how much practice is needed. Plan to complete 30 to 50 practice cases before your real interview. If you want a structured approach, my case interview course walks you through proven strategies in as little as 7 days.
- Build relationships with specific consultants. Do not just collect business cards. Follow up with personalized emails after events. Ask thoughtful questions about their project work. These genuine connections often become the people who advocate for your application internally.
- Prepare your fit stories early. Final round interviews put significant weight on behavioral and fit questions. Have 5 to 8 polished stories ready that demonstrate leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving. Do not leave this for the last week.
The candidates who convert target school access into offers are the ones who treat recruiting like a semester-long project, not a last-minute scramble.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Your School Matter More Than Your GPA for MBB Recruiting?
Your school and GPA both matter, but at different stages. Your school determines which recruiting pipeline you enter and how much access you get to MBB firms. Your GPA acts as a threshold filter within that pipeline. At target schools, the typical GPA cutoff is around 3.5. At non-target schools, you may need a 3.7 or higher to pass the initial screen. Once you are in the interview, neither factor matters as much as your case and fit performance.
Can Experienced Hires Get into MBB Without a Target School Degree?
Yes. Experienced hires made up about 16% of all MBB US hires between 2020 and 2022. For experienced hires, your professional track record and relevant expertise carry more weight than where you went to school. McKinsey hired the most experienced professionals at 19% of its total US hires. A strong resume, clear narrative for why consulting, and a referral from a current consultant are the most reliable ways to get your foot in the door. For tips on acing the interview process itself, see our guide on consulting final round interviews.
What Is the Acceptance Rate at MBB Firms?
MBB firms accept fewer than 1% of all applicants each year. McKinsey alone receives over 700,000 applications annually. At the interview stage, roughly 10% to 30% of candidates advance from first round to final round, and a similar percentage receive offers from the final round. Even at target schools, the vast majority of applicants do not receive offers.
Do MBB Firms Recruit from International Schools for US Offices?
Yes, but the volume varies by firm. About 33% of McKinsey's US hires completed their undergraduate degree at an international university. At BCG, that figure drops to 20%, and at Bain it is only 11%. For MBA recruiting, INSEAD and London Business School are considered global targets for all MBB offices. If you are an international student, an MBA at a US target school is often the most reliable path to a US consulting role.
Is It Harder to Get into McKinsey Than BCG or Bain?
McKinsey is generally considered the most selective of the three. It has the fewest target schools (roughly 17 at the MBA level compared to 27 for BCG and 30 for Bain), applies the strictest resume filter, and receives the highest volume of applications. That said, all three firms are extremely competitive. If McKinsey feels like a stretch given your school and profile, BCG and Bain can be equally rewarding career launchpads with slightly broader recruiting funnels.
