Key Takeaways

McKinsey runs offices in over 130 cities, and the office you name on your application decides who screens your resume, who runs your case rounds, and what industries you serve for years afterward.

  • McKinsey has offices in 130+ cities across 65+ countries, grouped into six regions

  • New York is the global headquarters and, by McKinsey's own account, its largest office with over 900 consultants

  • Chicago was the firm's first office, opened in 1926, and now supports more than 1,000 colleagues in Illinois

  • You rank up to three offices on one application and divide 60 preference points between them

  • US base pay is identical across offices, so your office changes your cost of living, not your salary

  • Roughly 10 of McKinsey's US sites are service centers, labs, or capability hubs rather than consulting offices

How Many Offices Does McKinsey Have?

McKinsey has offices in more than 130 cities across more than 65 countries, according to the firm's own locations page. Those offices sit inside six regions: Africa, Asia Pacific, Central and South America, Europe, the Middle East, and North America. McKinsey's careers team describes that footprint as roughly 50% larger than the office networks of other global management consultancies.

That number moves slowly but it does move. McKinsey has expanded into cities including Vancouver, Belgrade, Almaty, Nairobi, and Dublin, entered new markets such as Ecuador and Uruguay, and it consolidates smaller locations when regional demand shifts.

Here is how the network breaks down by region, with example cities in each.

Where Is McKinsey's Global Headquarters?

McKinsey's global headquarters is at 3 World Trade Center, 175 Greenwich Street, New York, NY 10007. McKinsey describes New York as its largest office and puts the consultant count at over 900, alongside a network of more than 3,000 McKinsey alumni in the metro area.

That matters for applicants beyond bragging rights. The largest office is also the one with the deepest partner bench, the widest range of client work, and the biggest annual intake, which is why McKinsey New York draws more applications than anywhere else in the Americas.

The firm's roots are not in New York, though. James O. McKinsey founded the firm in Chicago in 1926, and McKinsey still calls its Chicago office the first in the world.

Today McKinsey says over 1,000 colleagues support the Chicago office across Illinois. It sits at 300 East Randolph Street, and the office covers consumer goods, retail, healthcare, aerospace, financial services, transportation, and the public sector.

One address worth correcting: McKinsey's London office is at The Post Building, 100 Museum Street, London WC1A 1PB.

Some online guides still list an older Victoria address for it. The firm's own UK contact page is the authoritative source, and showing up at the wrong building for a final round is an avoidable way to start badly.

Which US McKinsey locations are not consulting offices?

This is the detail almost every other guide misses, and it costs candidates interviews. Roughly 10 of the US addresses McKinsey publishes are service centers, analytics hubs, labs, or studios rather than client-service offices that hire generalist consultants.

If you apply to one of these expecting a Business Analyst or Associate role, you are applying to the wrong place. Check the address against the list below before you rank it.

Atlanta GCI Analytics

Tampa Service Center

Waltham Client Capabilities Hub

404 Wyman Street, Suite 300, Waltham, MA 02451

These sites still hire, and some roles in them are excellent. They just run on different job families, different interview loops, and different recruiting calendars than the consulting track.

Which McKinsey Offices Are the Biggest?

New York, Chicago, and London are McKinsey's three largest offices. McKinsey does not publish a full ranked headcount table, so treat any precise consultant count you see online with suspicion unless the firm itself stated it.

Here is what McKinsey does say about its biggest locations.

Office

What McKinsey says

Why it matters to you

New York

The firm's largest office, over 900 consultants, 3,000+ alumni in the metro area

Biggest intake and widest client mix, and the toughest applicant pool

Chicago

McKinsey's first office in the world, opened 1926, over 1,000 colleagues in Illinois

Deep consumer, retail, and operations work with strong Midwest school pipelines

London

The firm's first overseas office, opened 1959, now at The Post Building

Europe's anchor office and the default target for international applicants

Washington DC

Base for the McKinsey Global Institute and the McKinsey Center for Government

Best route into public sector, defense, and policy work

Cleveland

McKinsey's sixth global office, opened 1963

Smaller office, faster partner exposure, less crowded applicant pool

Notice the pattern in that last column. Size cuts both ways: a large office gives you more project variety and a bigger cohort, while a smaller office gives you earlier client exposure and a shorter line to the partners who decide your rating.

What Are McKinsey's Main International Offices?

Outside North America, McKinsey's largest concentrations sit in London, Paris, Munich, Dubai, Singapore, Mumbai, Shanghai, and Sao Paulo. Each regional cluster has its own recruiting calendar, language expectations, and work authorization rules, and those three things filter out more applicants than case performance does.

Europe

Europe is McKinsey's densest region outside the US, with offices in Warsaw, Helsinki, Budapest, Dublin, Belgrade, and dozens of other cities alongside the large London, Paris, Munich, Amsterdam, and Zurich offices. McKinsey UK recruiting runs on a calendar closer to the US cycle, while continental offices vary widely.

Language is the gate on the continent. Munich, Paris, Milan, and Madrid expect professional fluency in the local language for client-facing roles, and no amount of case practice compensates for missing it.

Asia Pacific

McKinsey splits Asia into two leadership regions: Greater China and Asia excluding China. Greater China covers Beijing, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Taipei, while the rest of the region runs through India, Japan, Korea, Southeast Asia, and Australia and New Zealand leadership.

Mumbai is the anchor for McKinsey India recruiting and one of the largest offices in the region. Singapore is the Southeast Asia hub and one of the most internationally mixed offices anywhere in the firm, though work pass rules make it hard for non-residents to get hired directly.

Middle East

Dubai and Riyadh drive most of the volume, with additional offices in Manama and Kuwait City. Government transformation programs across the Gulf have made this the fastest growing part of the network, so McKinsey Middle East recruiting often has open headcount when US and European offices do not.

Arabic is a real advantage in Riyadh and a meaningful one in Dubai. Zero personal income tax in the UAE also means a lower headline salary can still net you more than a US offer.

Africa and Latin America

McKinsey's African network runs through Johannesburg, Lagos, Nairobi, and Casablanca, and the work skews heavily toward public sector, mining, telecom, and banking. McKinsey South Africa recruiting is the largest entry point on the continent.

In Latin America, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Mexico City carry most of the headcount. Portuguese is effectively mandatory for McKinsey Brazil recruiting, and Spanish is expected across the rest of the region.

How Do You Choose Which McKinsey Office to Apply To?

You do not apply to McKinsey. You apply to a McKinsey office, and the mechanics of that choice are more specific than most candidates realize.

McKinsey's application asks you to name up to three offices and split 60 preference points between them. A candidate who puts 40 points on Chicago, 12 on Detroit, and 8 on Minneapolis is telling recruiting something different from one who splits 20, 20, and 20.

Your file generally moves through those preferences in order, which means your first choice does most of the work. If your top office has no headcount that cycle, recruiting may ask whether you would interview with your second choice instead.

Here is the sequence I use with the hundreds of candidates I have coached one-on-one.

  1. Start with where you can legally work: visa sponsorship and work pass quotas eliminate more candidates than any interview round, so confirm the office sponsors your status before you spend a point on it

  2. Check the language requirement: professional fluency, not conversational, is the bar in most non-English offices

  3. Match your background to the office's client mix: a biotech PhD is a far stronger story in Boston than in Houston, and an energy background is the reverse

  4. Check whether the office is actually hiring your level: smaller offices sometimes skip an undergraduate class entirely in a given year

  5. Build a coherent set of three: three geographically or industrially related offices read as a plan, and three random cities read as desperation

  6. Weight the points honestly: put the majority on your genuine first choice rather than hedging evenly across all three

McKinsey's own careers team tells candidates to start with location and to think about where they know the local culture and language, have a support network, and want to build a community. That advice is more literal than it sounds, because "why this office" is a real interview question and a vague answer reads as a candidate who will transfer out in a year.

If you want a ranked view of how the major offices compare on prestige, lifestyle, and industry strength, my breakdown of the best McKinsey office goes deeper on each of the top eight.

Do McKinsey Offices Differ in Pay, Interviews, and Culture?

Pay does not differ within the US. Interviews are calibrated globally but the case content shifts with local industry, and office culture varies more than McKinsey's "one firm" messaging suggests.

Pay across McKinsey offices

Unlike investment banking, McKinsey does not pay a New York premium. A McKinsey Business Analyst salary is roughly $112,000 in base pay whether you sit in Manhattan, Atlanta, or Cleveland as of 2026.

The same holds one level up, where a McKinsey Associate salary runs about $192,000 in base pay across US offices. The practical effect is that a Chicago or St. Louis offer stretches dramatically further than the identical New York or San Francisco offer.

Across countries the picture changes completely, because each office pays to its local market. A London or Munich Associate earns a local-market package, and a Dubai offer with a lower headline number can net more after the UAE's zero income tax.

Interviews across McKinsey offices

The format is the same everywhere: the McKinsey Solve assessment, then interviewer-led case rounds paired with the Personal Experience Interview. What changes is the flavor of the cases you get.

A Houston interviewer is more likely to hand you an energy case and a Boston interviewer a pharma case, because interviewers draw on the work they actually do. That is why practicing a broad range of industries beats memorizing frameworks, and it is the core of what I teach in my case interview course.

Culture across McKinsey offices

Every office runs the same values, the same up-or-out model, and the same evaluation language. Beneath that, personality varies a lot with the local market and the partners who built the office.

In my experience interviewing at Bain, the same was true of our offices, and candidates who had spoken to two or three people in their target office could tell you exactly what made it different. That specificity is what separates a good "why this office" answer from a forgettable one.

Can You Transfer Between McKinsey Offices?

Yes, and McKinsey lists global mobility as a formal part of its flexibility programs, covering both short and long term transfers between offices. What you cannot do is treat a smaller office as a back door into a bigger one.

There are three ways consultants move across geographies.

  • Engagement staffing: you join a project run out of another office for its duration, which is the easiest route and needs no formal application

  • Rotation: a formal six to twelve month posting in a host office, with an application and a review by the host office's mobility team

  • Permanent transfer: a full relocation, usually available after 12 to 24 months and requiring a written case for the move

That written case is not a formality. Consultants describe submitting a memo explaining why they want to move, how the new office serves their development, and naming senior colleagues who will vouch for them, which then goes to a committee vote.

Two things make transfers succeed. A strong performance rating gives you standing, and a partner in the target office who wants you on their projects gives you a sponsor, because the host office's real worry is whether you will get staffed once you arrive.

How Do You Improve Your Odds at the Office You Want?

Tip #1: Treat office choice as a supply and demand problem

The hardest office to enter is not always the most famous one. A mid-sized office running an unusually large class in a given year can be an easier route in than a marquee office with six slots, and the McKinsey acceptance rate hides that variation completely.

Tip #2: Talk to two people in the office before you rank it

Fifteen minutes with a current consultant tells you the office's client mix, hiring appetite, and personality faster than any article can. It also gives you the concrete detail that makes a "why this office" answer land.

Tip #3: Get your referral into the office you actually want

A referral from someone in your first-choice office carries far more weight than one from a consultant three time zones away. The McKinsey referral process routes your file to that person's office, so a mismatch quietly wastes your strongest asset.

Tip #4: Apply to your home office if you have one

Offices read local candidates as lower risk. You already have work authorization, language, cultural context, and a reason to stay, which removes three of the four things a recruiter worries about.

Tip #5: Do not submit two separate applications to McKinsey

McKinsey considers one application per person per cycle. Submitting two to different offices does not double your odds, and it signals that you either did not read the instructions or tried to work around them.

Tip #6: Match the office to your fit stories, not just your resume

Your Personal Experience Interview answers should connect to why that office and that region matter to you. Preparing those stories properly is what my fit interview course is built around.

McKinsey offices are not interchangeable branches of one hiring machine, and the candidates who treat them that way lose interviews they were qualified for. Pick the two or three offices where your work authorization, language, and background genuinely fit, put most of your preference points on the one you actually want, and build a specific answer for why that office and no other.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many offices does McKinsey have?

McKinsey has offices in more than 130 cities across more than 65 countries, according to the firm's own locations page. Those offices sit inside six regional groupings: Africa, Asia Pacific, Central and South America, Europe, the Middle East, and North America. In the United States alone, McKinsey lists 24 client-service offices plus roughly 10 service centers, labs, and capability hubs.

Where is McKinsey's headquarters?

McKinsey's global headquarters is at 3 World Trade Center, 175 Greenwich Street, New York, NY 10007. McKinsey describes New York as its largest office and says it is home to over 900 consultants. The firm was founded in Chicago in 1926, and the Chicago office remains its oldest.

Can you apply to more than one McKinsey office?

Yes. McKinsey lets you name up to three offices on a single application and asks you to split 60 preference points between them. Your file is generally considered in the order you ranked, so your first choice does most of the work. Submitting separate applications to different offices is not necessary and can backfire.

Which McKinsey office is the hardest to get into?

New York and London are consistently the most competitive McKinsey offices because they are the largest, the most prestigious, and the default first choice for international applicants who want an English-speaking office. Difficulty is really a supply and demand question, so a smaller office with an unusually large intake in a given year can be an easier route in than a famous office with a small class.

Does McKinsey pay differently by office?

Within the United States, McKinsey pays the same base salary regardless of office. A Business Analyst earns roughly $112,000 in base pay in Chicago, Atlanta, or New York alike, and a post-MBA Associate earns roughly $192,000. Pay differs sharply across countries, because each office pays to its local market.

Can you transfer between McKinsey offices?

Yes. McKinsey supports short and long term transfers between offices as part of its global mobility program, and consultants also cross geographies temporarily by staffing onto projects run out of other offices. Permanent moves usually require 12 to 24 months of tenure, a solid performance rating, and a written case for why the move makes sense. You should not pick a smaller office planning to transfer out quickly.
