McKinsey Partner Salary: What Partners Actually Earn

Author: Taylor Warfield, Former Bain Manager and interviewer

Last Updated: September 15, 2026

McKinsey partner salary runs roughly $700,000 to $1.5 million in total annual compensation, while senior partners typically earn $1.5 million to $5 million or more, driven mostly by profit sharing rather than base pay. This guide breaks down what partners earn at every level, what actually moves the number, and how a 2026 change to McKinsey's pay structure shifts the math.

Key Takeaways

A McKinsey partner earns an estimated $700,000 to $1.5 million per year in total compensation, and base salary accounts for less than half of that package for most tenured partners.

  • Associate partners, the level just below partner, report a median total package of $419,931 on Levels.fyi as of August 2026

  • Partner base salary sits around $400,000 to $650,000, with profit sharing supplying everything above it

  • Senior partners earn an estimated $1.5 million to $5 million or more, depending almost entirely on the size of their client book

  • McKinsey elected 224 new partners in November 2025 and 56 new senior partners in April 2025, per Bloomberg

  • Project Acorn, reported by the Financial Times in May 2026, moves an estimated 3 to 5 percentage points of partner awards out of cash and into firm equity

  • McKinsey publishes nothing about partner pay, so every figure below is an estimate from self-reported data and press reporting

How Much Does a McKinsey Partner Make?

A McKinsey partner makes an estimated $700,000 to $1.5 million in total annual compensation. Base salary accounts for roughly $400,000 to $650,000, and the rest comes from performance awards and profit sharing. Associate partners earn closer to $425,000 to $600,000, while senior partners start at $1.5 million and can pass $5 million in a strong year.

Estimates built from Glassdoor and Levels.fyi submissions checked in August 2026. McKinsey is a private partnership and publishes no compensation bands, so treat these as directional.

The first thing to understand is that these ranges are not sloppy. They are wide because one of two people holding the identical title can earn triple what the other does. A partner elected last year and a partner running a $40 million account are both called partner, and the profit pool does not treat them the same.

How Does McKinsey Partner Compensation Actually Work?

McKinsey partner compensation stops behaving like a salary and starts behaving like business ownership. Below engagement manager, pay is a base plus a bonus set by a performance rating. At partner, you are an owner of a private partnership, and your income is a claim on the firm's profits.

Four components make up the package:

  • Base salary: a fixed, predictable amount that becomes a shrinking share of total pay as you gain seniority

  • Additional award: the annual performance component, sized against what you sold, delivered, and built

  • Profit share: a distribution from the firm's annual profits, weighted by your ownership stake and your contribution

  • Retained equity: a portion of your award that stays inside the firm and pays out over a longer horizon

In my experience at Bain, the change in how you get paid at partner is more disorienting than the change in how much. You go from a number you can forecast in January to a number nobody can tell you until the firm closes its books. Consultants who have spent a decade optimizing for a rating suddenly find themselves optimizing for revenue.

Scale explains why the pool is large. McKinsey generated a record of approximately $16 billion in revenue in 2023, and in early 2024 the firm's more than 700 senior partners re-elected Bob Sternfels as global managing partner. Those senior partners sit at the top of the distribution that every other partner's share is measured against.

Ownership also carries governance. McKinsey's Shareholders Council, the board of the firm's parent company, is made up of 12 senior partners elected by their peers plus the global managing partner, per the firm's leadership page. Partners vote, and that vote is part of what they are buying into.

What Does a McKinsey Associate Partner Earn?

Associate partner is the clearest data point in the entire partner track, because enough people report it publicly to produce a reliable median. Levels.fyi puts the median associate partner package at $419,931, built from a $281,300 base and a $134,256 bonus, as of August 2026. Across all McKinsey roles on that site, associate partner is the highest-paying level reported.

City-level medians show how much office mix matters, even though McKinsey does not run formal city differentials at junior levels.

Associate partner is also the most dangerous level on the ladder. It functions as a two to three year audition in which the existing partnership decides whether to vote you in. This is where up or out bites hardest, because people who reach it have usually given the firm eight or more years already.

What Does a McKinsey Senior Partner Earn?

A McKinsey senior partner earns an estimated $1.5 million to $5 million or more per year. Glassdoor reports a median total pay of $448,000 for the title as of August 2026, split into a $284,000 base, a $102,000 bonus, and $62,000 of profit sharing. That gap between the crowd-sourced median and the real ceiling is the single most misread number in consulting compensation.

The reason is selection bias. That senior partner median rests on three submissions, and partners with $3 million packages do not fill out anonymous salary surveys. Glassdoor's own McKinsey page tops out at $465,706 for the partner title across more than 35,000 total submissions, which tells you the ceiling of the dataset rather than the ceiling of the job.

Senior partner is also no longer the only top rung. In August 2026, McKinsey introduced a distinguished partner role with an inaugural class of 20, spanning offices from Casablanca to Seoul to Boston. Distinguished partners are elected alongside senior partners and recognize deep expertise rather than breadth of firm leadership.

That matters for pay because it creates a second path to the top of the house. Historically, the way to reach senior partner economics was to build the biggest possible client portfolio. The distinguished partner role signals that owning a domain, such as cyber resilience or postmerger integration, is now a recognized route.

How Is McKinsey Changing Partner Pay?

McKinsey is shifting a portion of partner pay out of cash and into firm equity. In May 2026, the Financial Times reported a plan known internally as Project Acorn that would increase the equity share of additional partner awards by an estimated 3 to 5 percentage points. In the example cited, a partner might receive 90% of an additional award in cash instead of about 95% previously.

The plan had been in development for two years. McKinsey's public response was that as a private firm it does not disclose partner compensation, but that it continually refines how it attracts, develops, and retains talent.

Three forces sit behind the change:

  • Outcome-based pricing: roughly a quarter of McKinsey's global fees now come from outcome-linked arrangements rather than billed scope, per firm leaders speaking to Business Insider in November 2025

  • AI economics: Bob Sternfels said at CES in January 2026 that McKinsey runs roughly 40,000 people alongside 25,000 personalized AI agents, with client-facing roles growing 25% and non-client-facing roles shrinking by the same share

  • Capital strength: holding more partner economics inside the firm builds a cushion against a consulting market that has become far more cyclical since 2022

Read this correctly. Project Acorn is a change to the mix, not an announced cut to total partner compensation. Less arrives as cash this year, more accrues as equity in a firm whose value the partner also controls, which is better or worse depending entirely on how the next decade goes.

What Drives the Range in McKinsey Partner Salary?

Sold work drives partner pay more than anything else. Everything below matters, but a partner who consistently sells and renews large engagements will out-earn peers on every other dimension.

  • Client revenue: the size, stability, and renewal rate of the book you personally own

  • Tenure in the partnership: ownership stakes build over years, so a tenth-year partner starts each year ahead of a first-year partner

  • Practice area: practices with large, recurring transformation work carry bigger profit pools than advisory-heavy practices

  • Office and country: pay bands are set locally across the 65-plus countries where McKinsey operates

  • Firm performance: a weak year compresses distributions across the whole partnership regardless of individual results

Here's an example of how far apart two identical titles can land. Let's say two partners are elected in the same class. One inherits a relationship and grows it into $30 million of annual fees across three accounts, while the other sells $8 million spread across one-off projects.

Both are partners. The first will earn multiples of the second within four years, and the profit pool will keep widening that gap for as long as both stay.

That gap is why the smartest thing you can do early is understand the consulting bonus structure at the firm you join. The mechanics of how a firm converts sold work into your personal payout will govern the second half of your career far more than your starting base.

How Long Does It Take to Become a McKinsey Partner?

The typical path from post-MBA associate to partner takes 6 to 10 years, with 8 to 9 years being the most common outcome. Undergraduate hires who stay straight through usually need 10 to 13 years, because they enter two levels lower. Each stage carries its own promotion decision.

  1. Associate to engagement manager: 2 to 4 years

  2. Engagement manager to associate partner: 2 to 3 years

  3. Associate partner to partner: 2 to 4 years, decided by a partner vote

  4. Partner to senior partner: 5 to 8 years of sustained revenue leadership

The promotion classes themselves have shrunk. Bloomberg reported that McKinsey elected 224 new partners in November 2025, up from about 200 the prior year but well below the 400-plus classes of the 2021 and 2022 boom. The 2025 class came from more than 65 cities across 45 countries.

Senior partner classes are smaller still. McKinsey elected 56 new senior partners in April 2025, of whom 6 were women, according to Bloomberg's reporting on the class. Set against a partnership of more than 700 senior partners, that is a replacement rate of well under 10% a year.

What percent of McKinsey consultants make partner?

Roughly 5 to 10% of people who join McKinsey at the entry level ultimately reach partner. The firm does not publish this figure, but the arithmetic is instructive: 224 new partners against a workforce Sternfels put at about 40,000 works out to roughly 0.6% of headcount in a single year.

The low rate is not mostly about failure. Most consultants leave voluntarily within two to four years for business school, private equity, or an operating role, which is exactly what the model expects. Anyone weighing the partner track against those exit opportunities should be comparing a decade of compounding equity against an immediate step up in title.

How Does McKinsey Partner Pay Compare to BCG and Bain?

Partner pay across the three firms lands in the same band, and the spread inside any single firm is wider than the gap between them. All three convert a base salary into a minority of pay and let profit sharing carry the rest.

Bain

The structural differences matter more than the headline numbers. BCG separates a salaried partner tier from equity-holding managing directors and partners, so the jump into BCG partner salary happens in two distinct steps rather than one.

Bain's partnership skews heavily toward private equity work, which produces high-margin, repeat diligence engagements. That mix is why Bain partner salary at the top end holds up against McKinsey despite Bain being a smaller firm.

If you are choosing between offers years before any of this applies, ignore the partner gap. Look at MBB salaries at the level you will actually join, then pick on practice strength and office fit.

How Does McKinsey Partner Pay Differ Outside the United States?

Partner pay outside the United States is set against local market rates, and the gap is significant in nominal terms. McKinsey operates in more than 65 countries and 130-plus cities, and each region sets its own bands rather than converting a global scale.

London is the best-documented example. Levels.fyi puts the median associate partner package in the Greater London area at £200,132, well under the $432,185 median for the same level in the United States. Glassdoor's London partner estimate averages $276,873 across 111 submissions as of August 2026.

Three adjustments change how those numbers land in your pocket. Continental European offices generally pay below London in local currency, Gulf offices pay competitively against a very different tax position, and Indian offices operate on a scale that looks low in dollars but sits far above the local market. A Dubai partner and a London partner with identical gross packages do not take home remotely similar amounts.

Purchasing power closes more of the gap than the exchange rate suggests. That said, the honest summary is that the United States remains the highest-paying market at partner level in absolute terms, and the American offices hold the largest share of the firm's senior partners.

What Do McKinsey Partners Get Beyond Salary?

The non-cash side of the package is meaningful but rarely the deciding factor. McKinsey contributes at least 7.5% of pay toward retirement for its consulting staff and provides 19 days of paid time off, according to 2026 data published by the Graduate Management Admission Council.

  • Retirement contributions: firm contributions continue at partner level on a much larger base of eligible pay

  • Health and family benefits: full medical coverage plus family support programs that scale with seniority

  • Travel and expenses: senior-level travel policies and accumulated status that carry into personal life

  • Leaves and sabbaticals: extended leave options that are far easier to take once you control your own client portfolio

The most valuable asset is not on any benefits page. Partners build relationships with sitting CEOs and boards, which is why board seats and C-suite roles are the standard landing spots for partners who leave.

What Are the Risks in McKinsey Partner Pay?

Partner pay is the least predictable compensation in professional services. You trade a forecastable salary for a claim on profits, which means a soft year for the firm shows up directly in your income even if you personally performed well.

The deferral problem compounds it. A growing share of the award sits inside the firm rather than in your bank account, and Project Acorn pushes further in that direction. Partners who leave before that equity fully vests forfeit part of what they earned.

Then there is the arithmetic of getting there at all. Ten years of a demanding travel schedule, one partner vote you do not control, and a McKinsey career path that pushes out anyone who stalls add up to real risk. Plenty of people who would have made excellent partners left at engagement manager for a shorter road to the same number.

How Do You Get on the McKinsey Partner Track?

The partner track starts long before anyone mentions partnership to you. Having coached hundreds of candidates through consulting recruiting, the people who eventually reach partner tend to make the same four decisions early.

Tip #1: Enter at the highest level you can

Every level you skip on entry is roughly two years shaved off the clock. An MBA hire starts as an associate, two rungs above an undergraduate hire, which is why the post-MBA route reaches partner in 6 to 10 years instead of 10 to 13.

Tip #2: Pick a practice with a growing profit pool

Partner economics follow the practice, not the person. With straight strategy advice now under 20% of the firm's work and implementation and technology carrying the growth, joining a shrinking practice caps your ceiling before you ever get a vote.

Tip #3: Start selling years before it's your job

The associate partner audition is scored on commercial results, and you cannot build a pipeline in 24 months from a standing start. Engagement managers who quietly source follow-on work arrive at that audition with proof instead of a plan.

Tip #4: Find a senior partner sponsor early

Partner election is a vote, and votes need advocates who have watched you work. A senior partner who has staffed you three times will argue for you in a room you will never enter.

None of it starts without an offer. Every partner at the firm cleared a McKinsey case interview first, and that is the one gate where preparation moves your odds the most. If you want to learn case interviews quickly, my case interview course walks you through proven strategies in as little as 7 days.

McKinsey partner salary rewards one thing above all others, and it is not analytical horsepower. It is the ability to make senior clients want to keep working with you specifically. Start building that muscle at engagement manager, because by the time it shows up in your compensation, the habits are already set.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a McKinsey partner make a year?

A McKinsey partner earns an estimated $700,000 to $1.5 million per year in total compensation. Base salary makes up roughly $400,000 to $650,000 of that, and profit sharing supplies the rest. McKinsey does not publish partner pay, so these figures are estimates built from self-reported data on Glassdoor and Levels.fyi. A first-year partner sits near the bottom of the range and a partner with a large client book sits near the top.

How much does a McKinsey senior partner make?

McKinsey senior partners earn an estimated $1.5 million to $5 million or more per year. Glassdoor lists a median total pay of $448,000 for the senior partner title as of August 2026, but that figure comes from only three submissions and reflects base pay far more than profit distributions. The largest packages belong to global practice leaders and regional chairs whose client portfolios generate tens of millions in annual fees.

Do McKinsey partners own equity in the firm?

Yes. McKinsey is a private partnership, and elected partners hold an ownership interest that entitles them to a share of firm profits. That ownership is also why partner pay swings with firm performance in a way that a corporate salary does not. In May 2026, the Financial Times reported that McKinsey planned to shift a larger share of partner awards from cash into equity under a plan called Project Acorn.

How long does it take to become a McKinsey partner?

The typical path from post-MBA associate to partner takes 6 to 10 years, with 8 to 9 years being the most common outcome. That path runs through engagement manager and associate partner, and each step requires a promotion decision. Undergraduate hires who stay straight through usually need 10 to 13 years because they start two levels lower.

Is McKinsey partner pay higher than BCG or Bain partner pay?

Partner pay at McKinsey, BCG, and Bain lands in the same broad band, and the spread inside any one firm is wider than the gap between firms. Estimated partner totals run $700,000 to $1.5 million at McKinsey, $470,000 to over $1 million at BCG, and $600,000 to $1.5 million at Bain. Once profit sharing dominates the package, how much business you sell matters far more than which logo is on your card.

Does McKinsey publish partner salaries?

No. McKinsey is a private partnership and does not disclose partner compensation, a position the firm restated publicly in May 2026. Every partner figure you see online is an estimate built from anonymous submissions to sites like Glassdoor and Levels.fyi, plus press reporting on the firm. Treat any exact-sounding partner number as a directional estimate rather than a published band.
