Rotman Casebook: Free Download + How to Use It
Author: Taylor Warfield, Former Bain Manager and interviewer
Last Updated: September 18, 2026
The Rotman casebook is a free PDF of practice case interviews published by student consulting clubs at the University of Toronto, and it comes in two separate editions: an undergraduate book and a longer MBA book. This guide covers every case inside, where to download both for free, and how to practice with them without picking up habits that get candidates rejected.

Key Takeaways
The Rotman casebook is worth downloading for practice volume, but treat it as a supplement to structured case prep rather than a replacement for it.
You can download the casebook here: Rotman 2025.pdf
- Two different Rotman casebooks exist: an undergraduate edition and a separate MBA edition
- The 2023 undergraduate edition runs 75 pages and contains 6 full cases, each rated for quantitative and qualitative difficulty
- Five of the six cases are interviewee-led, which fits BCG and Bain better than McKinsey
- Both editions are genuinely free, and no legitimate site charges for them
- Consulting hired 15% of Rotman's Full-Time MBA Class of 2025 at an average base salary of $138,301 CAD
What Is the Rotman Casebook?
The Rotman casebook is a free collection of practice case interviews written by students at the University of Toronto's Rotman School of Management. Two versions circulate: an undergraduate book from the Rotman Commerce Consulting Association and a longer MBA book from the Management Consulting Association. Both contain case prompts, exhibits, interviewer guidance, and worked solutions.

That split matters more than most download pages admit. The undergraduate book is short, recent, and tightly edited. The MBA book is far longer and closer in format to the big American MBA consulting casebooks.
The undergraduate edition also has an unusual origin. Its authors describe it as a pilot project started because the program lacked student-written prep material of its own, which explains why it reads more like a curated sample than an exhaustive library.
One thing to rule out before you start searching. The Rotman Case Series is a completely different product: faculty-written business teaching cases published by the school's library for classroom discussion.
Those cases are excellent for a strategy course and useless for interview prep. They are long narratives about real companies written for classroom debate, not 30-minute problems with a prompt, exhibits, and a recommendation at the end.
Where Can You Download the Rotman Casebook for Free?
The undergraduate edition is posted publicly by the club itself. You can pull the current PDF straight from the Rotman Commerce Consulting Association resources page with no email signup and no account.
The MBA editions are harder to pin down. Recent Management Consulting Association books, including the 2022-2023 and 2024-2025 editions, circulate on document sharing sites rather than an official public page, because the club distributes them to members first.
You can download the MCA casebook here: Rotman 2025.pdf
Older MBA material is easier to find and still useful. An earlier Management Consulting Association book billed itself as a starter set of 30 cases, which is five times the case count of the current undergraduate edition.
One warning. Paid case bundles frequently repackage casebooks the clubs already give away, so check the free sources before you spend anything.
What Cases Are Inside the Rotman Casebook?
The 2023 undergraduate edition contains 6 cases spanning private equity, new product launch, profitability, growth, valuation, and market entry. Each case carries two separate difficulty scores, one for quantitative demand and one for qualitative demand, so you can pick a case that targets the skill you are weakest at.

Three cases stand out. "Student Debt" is the hardest quantitative case in the book and asks you to size the addressable market for a student credit card in Ontario, then run a two-year breakeven on it, so it is a strong drill if your market sizing is shaky.
"The Canadian Dream" asks you to value an NHL franchise using a comparable companies multiple, which is rarer in undergraduate casebooks than it should be. "Level 5 Strategy" contains no math at all, making it the right starting point if you have never done a case before.
"Tipsy Sailors" is the most conventional of the six. It is a standard profitability case that pivots into a manufacturing location decision between Ontario and Jamaica.
Is the Rotman Casebook Good for Case Interview Practice?
It is good for a specific purpose and mediocre for everything else. The Rotman casebook is a solid source of clean, well-edited practice reps with a partner, and a poor source for learning how to solve cases in the first place.
Here is where it earns its place:
- Interviewer guidance is unusually good: each case tells your partner exactly when to push, when to redirect, and what a strong answer sounds like
- Difficulty is labeled honestly: the split between quantitative and qualitative scores lets you target a weakness instead of guessing
- Canadian context: Ontario demographics, Canadian banks, and NHL economics show up throughout, which is rare and useful for Toronto recruiting
- Exhibits are real: the cases include competitor matrices, cost tables, and demographic charts rather than prompts with no data attached
The weaknesses are just as clear. Six cases will not carry a full prep cycle, and one of the six openly notes that it runs longer than a real interview. Students wrote every case, so the sample answers reflect what students believed a good answer looked like, not what a partner scoring you actually rewards.
The bigger issue is style. Five of the six cases are interviewee-led by design, and the authors say so explicitly. That is a real gap if you are interviewing at McKinsey, where interviewer-led cases are the standard format.
Compared to the larger American books, Rotman is narrower but cleaner. The Columbia casebook gives you roughly four times the case volume for the same price of zero.
Rotman's edge is consistency across a small set. If you want heavier exhibit and quantitative work once those six run out, the Kellogg casebook is the usual next step.
How Should You Use the Rotman Casebook?
Save these cases for live practice with a partner and never read them alone first. Once you have read a case, you cannot solve it cold, and you have permanently burned one of your six.
Here is the sequence I give candidates:
-
Learn the fundamentals first: work through structuring, math, and recommendation delivery before you touch a full case, or you will waste good practice material on lessons you could have learned from a drill
-
Start with Level 5 Strategy: it has no calculations, so it isolates structure and exhibit reading without math pressure
-
Book a real partner: hand your case interview practice partner the interviewer guidance pages and let them run the case straight from the book
-
Debrief for 15 minutes after every case: the improvement comes from the feedback conversation, not the case itself
- Move to harder books once you run out: six cases go fast, and you will need 20 to 30 total reps before you are interview-ready
The casebook's own authors recommend starting 2 to 3 months ahead and note that cases are usually capped at 30 minutes, with your framework taking no more than 2 of those minutes. That timing advice matches what I saw as an interviewer at Bain.
If you want a faster path than assembling free PDFs, my case interview course teaches the underlying method in as little as 7 days so your casebook reps actually build on something.
What Mistakes Should You Avoid With the Rotman Casebook?
Having coached hundreds of candidates one-on-one, I see the same four errors with every student-written casebook. They are all avoidable.
Mistake #1: Memorizing the sample frameworks
The sample frameworks in the book are labeled as examples, and the authors say a candidate's own structure does not need to match. Candidates ignore that and memorize the buckets anyway.
Interviewers screen for exactly this. Reciting generic case interview frameworks is one of the fastest ways to get dinged in a first round.
Mistake #2: Downloading a dozen casebooks and finishing none
Volume feels like progress. It is not. Three casebooks worked carefully with a partner beat ten skimmed alone, every time.
Mistake #3: Treating the sample answer as the right answer
Several of these cases have more than one defensible recommendation, and the book admits it. In "Level 5 Strategy," the authors state outright that any city is acceptable as long as the argument holds up.
Grade yourself on your logic and communication, not on whether you landed on the same city.
Mistake #4: Skipping the math drills
The book itself warns against running full cases just to fix one broken skill. If your arithmetic is slow, isolated case interview math practice fixes it far faster than another 30-minute case.
What Should Rotman Students Know About Consulting Recruiting?
Consulting is a top-three destination at Rotman, and the pay gap is large enough to be worth the prep. According to Rotman Career Services' Full-Time MBA Employment and Salary Report for 2025-2026, consulting placed a smaller share of the class than financial services but paid substantially more.

The employer list backs that up. McKinsey, Boston Consulting Group, Bain, Deloitte, EY, KPMG, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Accenture, Kearney, and ZS Associates all appear among firms hiring Rotman's Class of 2025.
The consulting salary range tells you something the average hides. A 25th percentile of $95,000 and a 75th percentile of $190,000 means the same industry pays double at the top, and the difference is largely which firm you land, which is why consulting recruiting in Canada rewards prep so heavily.
Note also that 66% of Class of 2026 internships came through the school rather than a student's own outreach. On-campus recruiting is still the dominant channel at Rotman, so the calendar matters as much as your casing does.
Geography is the other thing to plan around. Fully 84% of the Class of 2025 took roles in the Greater Toronto Area, which means you are competing with your own classmates for a small number of Toronto consulting seats rather than spreading across a continent.
The Rotman casebook gives you six clean, well-documented reps, and that is a real head start, but it is a starting point rather than a prep plan. Download it, save every case for a live partner, and build the underlying structuring and math skills separately so those six cases teach you something instead of just testing you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Rotman casebook free?
Yes. The Rotman Commerce Consulting Association publishes its casebook as a free PDF on its own website with no signup required. MBA editions from the Management Consulting Association circulate free on document sharing sites. Any site charging you for a Rotman casebook is reselling something the clubs give away.
How many cases are in the Rotman casebook?
The 2023 Rotman Commerce edition contains 6 full cases across 75 pages. The MBA editions are much longer, with the 2022-2023 book running 232 pages, and an older Management Consulting Association edition advertised 30 cases. Case counts change with every annual release.
Is the Rotman casebook good for McKinsey interviews?
It is a weak match on its own. Five of the six cases in the Rotman Commerce edition are interviewee-led, while McKinsey runs interviewer-led cases where the interviewer drives the sequence. Use the Rotman cases for reps and pair them with interviewer-led material before a McKinsey interview.
Which casebooks should you use alongside the Rotman casebook?
Pair it with two or three larger MBA casebooks rather than downloading a dozen. Columbia, Kellogg, and Booth all publish longer books with more exhibits and more difficulty variety. Three good casebooks worked carefully beat ten skimmed.
Do you have to be a Rotman student to use the casebook?
No. The Rotman Commerce casebook is posted publicly and anyone can download it. The cases use Canadian companies and Canadian market data, which makes the book especially useful if you are recruiting for Toronto offices, but the underlying case skills transfer anywhere.
