Those averages hide a lot of spread. Glassdoor reports ZS salaries across all roles running from $51,581 for administrative staff to $314,379 for a Principal, based on 6,169 submissions as of August 2026. Your actual number depends on which of three career tracks you join, which office you sit in, and how you were leveled at the offer stage.
ZS is one of the largest employers in life sciences consulting, with more than 13,000 professionals across 35 offices and headquarters in Evanston, Illinois. Its pharma and biotech concentration is why its pay bands sit above most healthcare consulting firms but below the generalist strategy houses.
What Is the ZS Salary at Each Level?
The main rungs on the ZS client-facing ladder are Associate, Associate Consultant, Consultant, Manager, Associate Principal, and Principal. Where you land on that ladder at the offer stage is the biggest single driver of what you earn, because each step up is worth between $34,000 and $155,000 in total compensation.
Associate
The Associate level is where undergraduates and most master's hires enter. Levels.fyi puts the US average at $103,600 base and $107,414 total, while Glassdoor's larger sample of 222 Decision Analytics Associate reports puts the average at $106,558, with a 25th to 75th percentile band of $86,143 to $133,354.
Chicago-area Associates report a lower average of $90,000 base and $100,000 total on Levels.fyi, which reflects how much the coastal offices pull the national average up. Department of Labor filings for visa-sponsored Decision Analytics Associates in fiscal 2025 showed a $121,250 median base, since those roles skew toward advanced degrees.
Associate Consultant
Associate Consultant is the level most candidates should fight to be placed into, because the jump from Associate is worth about $44,000 in total compensation. The US average is $141,071 base and $151,678 total.
ZS job postings from 2026 back this up with published bands. A Strategy Insights and Planning Associate Consultant role in Chicago listed $117,500 to $133,250, a Decision Analytics Associate Consultant role in New York listed $120,000 to $137,000, and a Data Science Associate Consultant role listed $142,500 to $157,125.
Consultant
Consultant is where ZS pay crosses $200,000. The level averages $175,814 base and $199,903 total, and 2026 ZS postings for Decision Analytics Consultant and Business Technology Solutions Consultant roles listed base bands of $155,000 to $190,000.
A handful of ZS Business Technology Solutions Consultant postings in Evanston listed a much narrower and higher band of $202,779 to $205,000. Those are permanent labor certification filings for specific candidates rather than open campus roles, so treat them as the ceiling rather than the norm.
Manager, Associate Principal, and Principal
Managers average $216,889 base and $233,556 total, and ZS listed a Decision Analytics Manager band of $190,000 to $250,000 in a 2026 Evanston posting. Associate Principals average $299,000 base and $389,000 total, which is the single largest jump on the ZS ladder.
Principal pay is thinly reported because few people reach it and fewer disclose. Two Principal-level H-1B filings in fiscal 2025 listed a $345,000 median base, and Glassdoor's average Principal figure is $314,379. Partner-level economics at a privately held firm like ZS are not publicly disclosed at all.
How Does Pay Differ Across ZS's Three Career Tracks?
ZS hires into three distinct client-facing tracks, and the same title pays differently in each. Strategy Insights and Planning is the classic strategy consulting track, Decision Analytics is the quantitative and modeling track, and Business Technology Solutions is the data engineering and platform track.
The cleanest way to compare them is Department of Labor wage data, which records the exact base salary ZS committed to for every visa-sponsored hire. The table below shows fiscal 2025 medians by job title.

The tracks pay within a few thousand dollars of each other at every level, which surprises most candidates. Decision Analytics edges out Business Technology Solutions by roughly 1% at both the Consultant and Associate Consultant levels, a gap small enough that you should choose your track on the work rather than the money.
Two specialist titles do break the pattern. Advanced Data Science Managers posted a $235,000 median and Advanced Data Science Associate Consultants posted a $163,500 median in fiscal 2025, both roughly $20,000 to $30,000 above the standard band for their level.
How Much Does ZS Pay by City?
ZS applies a cost of living adjustment in a subset of US offices, so the same level pays differently in New York than in Evanston. The federal wage data below shows median base salary across all levels in each city, so read it as an office-level signal rather than a level-for-level comparison.

The spread from Evanston to Chicago is about $18,000, or 11%, on filings that are often for identical titles. Evanston is the global headquarters and carries no coastal adjustment, so joining there means taking the lowest US band in exchange for the shortest commute to firm leadership.
One caution on the cost of living adjustment: ZS employees report that it is paid as part of regular salary rather than as a separate bonus, and that it shrinks as your base rises. An $8,000 raise might come with a $2,000 reduction in the adjustment, which means your headline increase is smaller than it looks.
How Does the ZS Bonus Work?
ZS pays an annual performance bonus and no equity, since it is a privately held partnership. The bonus is a small share of pay early in your career and becomes the dominant driver at the top of the ladder.
Here is a pattern the salary databases do not surface: dividing the reported average bonus by the reported average base at each level shows bonus climbing from 3.7% of base at Associate, to 7.5% at Associate Consultant, to 13.7% at Consultant, to 30.1% at Associate Principal. That progression matters because it changes how you should value an offer.
At the Associate level, base salary is essentially your whole package, so negotiate base and ignore the bonus percentage. At Associate Principal, nearly a quarter of your take-home hinges on a performance rating you do not control, which is a real risk that a headline number of $389,000 disguises.
The Manager level breaks the trend, reporting a 7.7% bonus ratio that sits below the Consultant level beneath it. That is almost certainly a small-sample artifact rather than a real pay cut, so treat the Manager bonus as roughly in line with the broader consulting bonus structure across the industry.
ZS job postings describe the full package as base salary plus a cost of living adjustment, bonus incentives, relocation support, medical and dental and life insurance, and retirement benefits. Notably absent from that list is any published consulting signing bonus schedule, which means sign-on money at ZS is negotiated case by case rather than granted automatically.
How Much Does a ZS Internship Pay?
ZS interns earn about $34.62 per hour, or roughly $6,001 per month, according to self-reported internship data on Levels.fyi. A 2026 ZS Business Technology Solutions Associate Consultant intern posting listed the same $6,000 monthly figure, so the number is consistent across sources.
Interns also report housing and relocation support on top of the monthly rate, including a $2,000 relocation payment in Evanston and a $330 monthly housing stipend in Los Angeles. Over a standard 10-week summer, that base rate works out to roughly $15,000 before any housing benefit.
The ZS internship is the highest-conversion path into a full-time seat, so treat it as an extended interview rather than a summer job. Interns who convert skip the hardest part of the recruiting funnel and start the pay ladder a year earlier than a lateral hire.
What Is the ZS Salary in India?
Decision Analytics Associates at ZS in India average about 8,85,000 rupees per year, with a typical band of 7,35,000 to 11,00,000 rupees and a 90th percentile near 13,50,000 rupees. That comes from 2,670 Glassdoor salary reports as of August 2026, one of the largest samples available for any consulting role in India.
Once bonus is included, Glassdoor puts median total pay for the Decision Analytics Associate role at 10,50,000 rupees. India is ZS's largest talent base outside the United States, with offices in Pune, Gurugram, Bengaluru, Noida, and Hyderabad.
Employees report annual increments and bonuses both landing in the 12% to 15% range in India, which is a faster rate of base growth than the US bands show. The tradeoff is hours: India-based teams frequently work on US and European client schedules, which pushes the workday late into the evening.
How Does ZS Salary Compare to McKinsey, BCG, and Bain?
ZS pays less than MBB at every comparable rung, and the gap widens as you climb. The table below compares total compensation using the same source for all four firms so the numbers are actually comparable.

Source: Levels.fyi average total compensation, United States. ZS data current as of August 2026, McKinsey as of January 2026, BCG and Bain as of mid-2025, so the MBB figures likely understate current pay slightly.
The most useful line in that table is the second rung, where ZS lands within 3% of both McKinsey and Bain. A ZS Associate Consultant earns nearly what a Senior Business Analyst earns, which is why candidates weighing a ZS offer against a rejected MBB application should not assume they are taking a large financial hit. A comparison against the broader management consultant salary market makes ZS look strong rather than weak.
The manager row is the real gap. ZS pays $234,000 where McKinsey pays $305,000, a 23% shortfall, and the difference compounds because ZS also takes longer to promote you there. Employees describe cycles of roughly two to three years per level at ZS against the 18 to 24 months typical at MBB.
Having recruited and interviewed at Bain for years, I saw plenty of strong candidates choose the offer with the bigger year-one number and regret it by year five. The right way to compare a ZS offer to a McKinsey salary is to model six years of pay at each firm using realistic promotion timing, not to compare starting bases.
ZS also sits in a different competitive set day to day. It competes for talent against analytics-heavy specialists and tier 2 consulting firms more than against generalist strategy houses.
Its pharma client concentration also shapes what your pay is worth later. The consulting exit opportunities from ZS run toward biotech, med-tech, and pharma commercial roles far more often than toward private equity, which is where the highest post-consulting pay tends to sit.
How Do You Negotiate a Higher ZS Offer?
The single biggest win at ZS is not squeezing an extra $5,000 out of your base. It is getting placed one level higher at the offer stage, which is worth $44,000 at the Associate to Associate Consultant boundary and $48,000 from Associate Consultant to Consultant.
Tip #1: Push for Associate Consultant, not Associate
If you have a master's degree, a PhD, or two or more years of relevant industry experience, argue for Associate Consultant before you argue about dollars. ZS routinely levels experienced hires conservatively, and employees who accept a low leveling then wait two to three years for the correction.
Tip #2: Anchor on the published band for your exact title
ZS posts base salary ranges in its job listings because of pay transparency laws in several states. Pull the posted range for your exact title and office, then ask for the top of it rather than a number you invented.
Tip #3: Ask what the cost of living adjustment does over time
Only a handful of ZS offices carry the adjustment, and it does not behave like a permanent raise. Ask the recruiter directly how the adjustment changes when your base rises, so you can compare a New York offer to an Evanston offer on the same terms.
Tip #4: Bring a competing offer, not a market survey
A written offer from another analytics or life sciences consulting firm moves a ZS recruiter far more than a printout of crowdsourced averages. If you cannot get one, use the published DOL wage data for your title and city, which is harder to dismiss than a salary aggregator.
Tip #5: Negotiate the first promotion cycle, not just the offer
Because ZS moves slowly, an accelerated first review is often worth more than a signing bonus. Ask whether your first promotion cycle can be evaluated at 12 months instead of the standard cadence, and get the answer in writing before you sign.
Every dollar in this article is downstream of one thing: getting the offer. ZS runs a case interview alongside its online assessment, and the case is where most candidates get cut.
If you want to learn case interviews quickly, my case interview course walks you through proven strategies in as little as 7 days.
Your ZS salary is set almost entirely by the level you are hired into and how fast you climb from there, not by how hard you push on base at the offer table. Get the leveling right, and prepare seriously for the ZS case interview that stands between you and the number.

Candidates with a master's degree or prior experience are often brought in above the campus baseline.
What is the highest salary at ZS?
The highest widely reported package at ZS is the Associate Principal level, which averages $389,000 in total compensation with a $299,000 base and a $90,000 bonus, according to Levels.fyi. Principal pay sits above that. Two Principal-level H-1B filings in fiscal 2025 listed a median base salary of $345,000, and Glassdoor puts the average Principal salary at $314,379.
Does ZS pay a signing bonus?
ZS does not publish signing bonus figures in its job postings.
