Bain BASE program

The Bain BASE program (Building and Supporting Excellence) is a selective, one-week, in-person experience that gives incoming MBA students from underrepresented backgrounds a firsthand look at life as a Bain consultant. Participants receive a full day of training, get staffed on a real case team, and have the opportunity to earn a Summer Associate internship offer for the following summer.

If you are an incoming MBA student who identifies as Black, Hispanic/Latin American, or Indigenous, this program can fast-track your path into consulting. In this guide, I will cover everything you need to know to apply, prepare for interviews, and maximize your chances of getting in.

But first, a quick heads up:

McKinsey, BCG, Bain, and other top firms accept less than 1% of applicants every year. If you want to triple your chances of landing interviews and 8x your chances of passing them, watch my free 40-minute training.

What Changed in 2026?

This article has been updated with the latest program details based on Bain’s official 2025 BASE cycle and confirmed 2026 recruiting information. We refreshed the participating office list, updated application timeline guidance, and added new sections on the BASE-to-Summer Associate pathway, a comparison table of Bain’s diversity programs, and expanded interview preparation strategies based on recent candidate experiences.

What Is the Bain BASE Program?

The Bain BASE program is a weeklong, in-person experience that immerses incoming MBA students in the day-to-day work of a strategy consultant. BASE stands for Building and Supporting Excellence, and the program is specifically designed for students who are Black, Hispanic/Latin American, or Indigenous.

During the program, participants receive a full day of consulting training and then get staffed on a real Bain case team. You will work on a component of an actual client project alongside Bain consultants, with a dedicated mentor coaching you through problem solving and presenting your findings.

Throughout the week, you will also participate in social events, hear from Bain leaders, and connect with members of Bain’s Black at Bain and Familia at Bain affinity groups. According to Bain, the program is designed to sharpen your business acumen while giving you a clear sense of what a consulting career looks like.

The Bain BASE program is different from Experience Bain in two key ways. BASE is a selective, in-person program for students from underrepresented backgrounds, while Experience Bain is a larger, virtual program open to all incoming MBA students.

What Happens During BASE Week?

The Bain BASE program typically takes place over one week near the end of July. Bain usually offers two different weeks, and participants only need to be available for one. In the 2025 cycle, the program ran July 21–25 and July 28–August 1.

Here is what you can expect during BASE week:

  • Day 1: Full-day consulting training covering frameworks, structured problem solving, data analysis, and presentation skills

  • Days 2–4: Staffed on a real Bain case team, working on a component of a live client project with mentorship from a Bain consultant

  • Day 5: Final presentations, feedback sessions, and wrap-up discussions about the Summer Associate opportunity

  • Throughout the week: Social events, networking dinners, panels with Bain leaders, and sessions with Black at Bain and Familia at Bain affinity groups

In my experience coaching candidates through consulting programs, the networking component is just as valuable as the case work. The relationships you build during BASE week often carry over into the recruiting process.

The Bain BASE program is extremely selective. According to Bain, there are significantly more applicants than available spots. However, not being selected for BASE has no impact on your candidacy for other Bain programs or full-time positions. Bain has stated that they have hired several BASE applicants as summer interns and full-time consultants even after they were not selected for the program.

What Does the Bain BASE Application Require?

The Bain BASE program application has three main components: a resume, test scores, and office preferences.

Resume

Your resume is the single most important part of the application. Bain recruiters use it to quickly assess your academic background, work experience, and leadership potential. Spend at least a few days refining it using feedback from peers, your school’s career center, or consultants in your network.

For detailed guidance, see our complete consulting resume guide. If you want professional help, our resume review and editing service includes unlimited revisions and 24-hour turnaround to help you land more interviews.

Test scores

You will need to submit scores for the SAT, ACT, GMAT, or GRE, depending on which exam you have taken. You do not need to submit an official score report. You will only need to enter the numerical scores and sub-score breakdowns in the application form.

Bain office preferences

You can select up to three Bain offices and assign a weight to each preference (the weights must add up to 100%). For example, you could put New York at 60%, Boston at 20%, and Chicago at 20%.

How Should You Choose Your Office Preferences?

Choose offices based on where you would genuinely want to work full-time after graduation. Bain takes these preferences seriously. If you do well during BASE and receive a Summer Associate offer, it will likely be for the office you were placed in.

Having a personal connection to a city (family, previous work experience, or your MBA school’s location) strengthens your candidacy for that office. Bain favors candidates who have clear reasons for wanting to work in a particular market. In my experience at Bain, candidates who had a compelling “why this office” story consistently stood out during the process.

What Are the Bain BASE Program Interviews Like?

If your application is selected, you will be invited for two interviews. Each interview is approximately 30 to 40 minutes and includes both a case interview and a few fit interview questions.

Case interviews

A case interview places you in a hypothetical business situation and asks you to develop a recommendation to solve a business problem. According to Bain, they are not testing you on business knowledge at this stage. They want to see how you think through problems, structure your approach, and communicate your reasoning.

Based on recent candidate experiences, the types of case questions most commonly asked in BASE interviews include:

  • Profitability cases (e.g., why are profits declining and what should we do?)

  • Revenue growth and new product cases

  • Market sizing questions (e.g., estimate the size of a particular market)

  • Market entry cases (e.g., should we enter a new market?)

Bain interview cases tend to be more structured and interviewer-led than cases at other firms. Expect the interviewer to guide you through specific questions rather than asking you to drive the entire case independently.

Fit interview questions

The Bain BASE program has an extremely limited number of spots. Bain uses fit questions to confirm you are genuinely interested in consulting and specifically in working at Bain after graduation.

The two most common fit questions are:

What Case Interview Questions Should You Expect?

While you could be given any type of business problem, there are patterns. Based on data from hundreds of candidates, roughly 40% of Bain first-round cases are profitability cases, 25% involve growth strategy or market entry, 20% include a market sizing component, and the remaining 15% cover other topics like M&A or pricing.

For BASE interviews specifically, the cases tend to be slightly less complex than standard Bain recruiting rounds. The interviewers understand that most BASE candidates are pre-MBA and may have limited case experience. However, this does not mean you can walk in unprepared. Having coached hundreds of candidates, I can tell you that practicing at least 5 to 10 cases before your interview makes a significant difference.

If you want to learn case interviews quickly and save yourself hundreds of hours, my case interview course walks you through proven strategies in as little as 7 days.

Can the Bain BASE Program Lead to a Full-Time Offer?

Yes. Participants who perform well during BASE Camp will have the opportunity to be offered a Bain Summer Associate internship for the following summer. This is one of the most valuable aspects of the program and a key reason it is so competitive.

The pathway works like this:

  • Perform well during BASE Camp week (July/August before your first MBA year)

  • Receive an offer for the Bain Summer Associate internship (10-week internship the following summer)

  • Perform well during the Summer Associate internship and receive a full-time Consultant offer

According to Bain, Summer Associate interns are compensated at $16,000 per month. A high percentage of Summer Associates who perform well receive full-time offers to return as Consultants after graduation, with starting base salaries around $192,000. For more details, see our Bain internship guide.

Even if you do not receive a Summer Associate offer directly through BASE, the experience itself is valuable. You will have real consulting project experience on your resume, a network of Bain contacts, and a much stronger understanding of what Bain looks for in candidates when you go through standard MBA recruiting in the fall.

How Can You Maximize Your Chances of Getting Into Bain BASE?

1. Perfect your consulting resume

Your resume is the most important factor in getting an interview. Follow these rules to make yours stand out:

  • Keep it to one page. No exceptions.

  • Start every bullet with a past-tense action verb

  • Quantify every accomplishment with a number or metric

  • Balance quantitative accomplishments (analyzing data, building models) with qualitative ones (leading teams, managing projects)

  • Avoid technical jargon, unfamiliar acronyms, and buzzwords

  • Include personal interests at the bottom to give reviewers something memorable

2. Prepare for case interviews early

Case interviews require significant practice. It is extremely unlikely that you will perform well in your BASE interview without having practiced at least 5 to 20 cases beforehand. Start with our case interview guide for beginners to learn the fundamentals.

3. Prepare strong answers to “Why Bain?” and “Why consulting?”

These questions are almost guaranteed in your BASE interviews. For “Why Bain?” you should have specific, genuine reasons. Here are angles that resonate:

  • Bain’s collaborative culture and the mantra “A Bainie Never Lets Another Bainie Fail”

  • Bain’s leadership in private equity consulting work

  • Bain’s local staffing model, which builds close-knit office relationships

  • Bain’s “Extra 10s” involvement opportunities outside of case work

  • A personal connection, such as a mentor or friend who worked at Bain and recommended it

For “Why consulting?” focus on what genuinely draws you to the work:

  • Solving complex business problems across multiple industries and functions

  • Building a broad skill set in strategy, analytics, and leadership in a short time

  • Working with and learning from high-performing teams on projects that drive real impact

  • Getting exposure to how companies operate at the highest level

4. Treat BASE Camp as an extended interview

If you are accepted into the program, remember that your performance during the week matters. Bain is evaluating whether to offer you a Summer Associate position. Be curious, ask thoughtful questions, contribute meaningfully to your case team, and build genuine relationships with the consultants you meet.

Frequently Asked Questions

How competitive is the Bain BASE program?

The Bain BASE program is extremely competitive. Bain states that there are significantly more applicants than spots available. While Bain does not publish an official acceptance rate for BASE, Bain’s overall internship and full-time acceptance rates are typically between 1% and 3%. Having a strong resume, solid test scores, and genuine enthusiasm for Bain and consulting will give you the best chance.

Does Bain cover travel and lodging for BASE participants?

Bain has historically provided support for travel and lodging for BASE participants, though the exact details can vary by year and office. Check the official Bain BASE program page or contact Bain recruiting directly to confirm what is covered for the upcoming cycle.

Can you apply to both Bain BASE and Experience Bain?

Yes. Bain encourages eligible candidates to apply to both programs. Experience Bain is a virtual program open to all incoming MBA students at eligible schools, while BASE is an in-person program for students from underrepresented backgrounds. Participating in both programs can strengthen your candidacy during MBA recruiting.

What happens if you are not selected for the Bain BASE program?

Not being selected for the Bain BASE program has zero impact on your candidacy for other Bain programs or positions. According to Bain, they have hired multiple BASE applicants as summer interns and full-time consultants even though those candidates were not selected for the BASE program. You are still fully eligible to apply for the Summer Associate internship through standard MBA recruiting.

Do you need prior business experience for the Bain BASE program?

No. Bain does not require prior business or consulting experience to apply for the BASE program. The program is designed to give you exposure to consulting, not to test whether you already know how to do the job. What matters most is demonstrating strong analytical thinking, clear communication, and genuine interest in a consulting career during the interview.
