Bain target schools are the universities where Bain & Company focuses its recruiting efforts, hosts on-campus events, and assigns dedicated recruiting teams. If you attend one of these schools, you have a significantly higher chance of landing a Bain interview.
Bain recruits from roughly 25 to 30 undergraduate universities and over 40 MBA programs globally. In this article, I'll share the complete list of Bain target schools at both the undergraduate and MBA level, explain how recruiting differs based on your school, and give you a step-by-step plan for getting a Bain interview even if you don't attend a target school.
But first, a quick heads up:
McKinsey, BCG, Bain, and other top firms accept less than 1% of applicants every year. If you want to triple your chances of landing interviews and 8x your chances of passing them, watch my free 40-minute training.
What Are Bain Target Schools?
Bain target schools are universities where Bain has an established on-campus presence, a dedicated recruiting team, and a structured timeline for events and interviews. These schools receive significantly more attention from Bain recruiters than non-target schools.
At a target school, Bain will host information sessions, coffee chats, and networking events throughout the recruiting season. A team of Bain consultants who are alumni of that school will review resumes and conduct interviews. There is often a dedicated recruiter who manages the entire process for each target campus.
Bain does not publicly release an official list of target schools. However, you can identify them in two ways. For undergraduates, check Bain's careers website. If your school has its own dedicated recruiting page with a named recruiter, it is a target school. For MBA students, Bain reveals its target list through its ExperienceBain pre-MBA program, which is only open to students admitted to specific business schools.
What Are Bain's Undergraduate Target Schools?
Bain recruits from approximately 25 to 30 undergraduate universities in the United States and Canada. Based on hiring data and on-campus recruiting activity, these schools can be grouped into three tiers.
Which Undergraduate Schools Send the Most People to Bain?
According to LinkedIn data covering graduates hired between 2014 and 2024, the following schools consistently send the most undergraduates to Bain. Harvard and the University of Pennsylvania lead all schools for MBB placements overall, with each placing roughly twice as many graduates as the next tier.
Tier |
Schools |
Approximate MBB Hires (7-Year Period) |
Top Targets |
Harvard, University of Pennsylvania |
150+ each |
Targets |
Yale, University of Michigan, Duke, Stanford, MIT, Dartmouth, Princeton, University of Virginia, Northwestern, UC Berkeley |
80 to 120 each |
Semi-Targets |
University of Texas at Austin, Notre Dame, Georgetown, Brigham Young University, Vanderbilt, Columbia, University of Chicago, Rice, Boston College, Southern Methodist University, Georgia Tech, Cornell, Emory |
30 to 70 each |
A few things stand out. The University of Texas at Austin and Notre Dame punch well above their weight at Bain specifically, with Bain hiring more aggressively from these schools than McKinsey or BCG do. Meanwhile, some schools that are strong feeders for investment banking, like NYU, place relatively fewer graduates into Bain.
Keep in mind that these tiers are approximate. Bain's hiring needs change year to year, and individual performance always matters more than school name once you get an interview.
What Are Bain's MBA Target Schools?
Bain has the broadest MBA target school list among the top three consulting firms. While McKinsey targets roughly 17 MBA programs and BCG targets about 27, Bain includes over 40 business schools for its ExperienceBain pre-MBA program. This makes Bain the most accessible of the three firms for MBA candidates.
Which MBA Programs Are Eligible for ExperienceBain?
ExperienceBain is a virtual pre-MBA program for incoming first-year MBA students. It gives participants early exposure to consulting at Bain, recruiting tips, and networking opportunities with current Bain consultants. Only students admitted to eligible schools can register.
According to Bain's official careers page, the eligible MBA programs for ExperienceBain include:

How Does Bain's Target School List Compare to McKinsey and BCG?
Each MBB firm takes a different approach to target school recruiting. Bain casts the widest net, while McKinsey is the most selective. Here is how the three firms compare at the MBA level.

At the undergraduate level, all three firms recruit from a similar core of schools (Harvard, Penn, Yale, Michigan, Duke, Stanford). However, Bain has notable strength at schools like the University of Texas at Austin, Notre Dame, and SMU where McKinsey and BCG have a smaller presence.
Why Does Bain Recruit from Target Schools?
Bain invests over $100,000 to hire and train each new consultant, according to industry estimates. To maximize that investment, Bain focuses recruiting on schools that consistently produce candidates with the analytical ability, leadership experience, and communication skills needed to succeed in consulting.
Target schools earn that status because of four main factors:
- Academic rigor: Students at these schools have demonstrated strong quantitative and analytical foundations through demanding coursework
- Consulting pipelines: Target schools have active consulting clubs, case competitions, and career centers that prepare students specifically for consulting recruiting
- Alumni networks: A strong base of Bain alumni at a school makes it easier to recruit, interview, and evaluate candidates from that campus
- Track record: Schools that have historically produced successful Bain consultants continue to receive recruiting attention year after year
In my experience at Bain, recruiters used a points-based scoring system to evaluate candidates. Academic performance, work experience, extracurricular leadership, and test scores all contributed to your score. Candidates from target schools had an easier path to getting screened because the recruiting infrastructure was already in place.
How Does Recruiting Differ at Target vs. Non-Target Schools?
The Bain recruiting experience looks very different depending on whether you attend a target school or not. Here is a side-by-side comparison.
What Is the Bain Recruiting Process at Target Schools?
At target schools, Bain runs a structured recruiting cycle. You can expect information sessions on campus, coffee chats with Bain consultants, resume drops through your school's career center, and on-campus interviews. A dedicated team of Bain alumni from your school reviews resumes, and you typically skip the recruiter phone screen and go straight to first-round interviews.
What Is the Bain Recruiting Process at Non-Target Schools?
At non-target schools, there is no structured on-campus recruiting. You apply through Bain's general online portal, and your resume is reviewed alongside a much larger applicant pool. If your application is strong enough, you will receive a recruiter phone screen before being invited to first-round interviews. The timeline is also less predictable. You may get short notice for interviews.

What Are Your Chances of Getting a Bain Interview from Each School Tier?
Your school tier has a major impact on your probability of landing a Bain interview. Based on recruiting data and industry estimates, here are the approximate odds at each stage.
Stage |
Target School |
Semi-Target School |
Non-Target School |
Chance of getting an interview |
20% to 30% |
10% to 15% |
Less than 5% |
Chance of passing first round |
30% to 40% |

30% to 40% |
Chance of passing final round |

20% to 30% |
20% to 30% |
Overall acceptance rate |
2% to 3% |
1% to 2% |
Less than 1% |
Notice something important: once you get to the interview stage, your school no longer matters much. The pass rates for first and final round interviews are roughly the same regardless of where you went to school. The biggest difference is in getting the interview in the first place.
This means that non-target candidates who can secure an interview through networking, referrals, or diversity programs are on a level playing field during the actual interviews. Having coached hundreds of candidates, I can confirm that your preparation matters far more than your school name once you are in the interview room.
How Can You Get a Bain Interview from a Non-Target School?
Getting a Bain interview from a non-target school is harder, but it is absolutely possible. Bain hires from non-target schools every year. Here is a step-by-step playbook.
Step 1: Build a strong application profile. Maintain a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Bain uses a points-based scoring system, and GPA is one of the biggest factors. Take quantitative coursework in areas like economics, statistics, or engineering. Get leadership experience in clubs, student government, or case competitions.
Step 2: Network with Bain consultants. Search LinkedIn for Bain consultants who are alumni of your school. Reach out with a short, respectful message asking for 15 minutes of their time. Attend any virtual Bain events you can find. The goal is to get your name known and eventually ask for a referral.
Step 3: Apply to Bain diversity and pipeline programs. Programs like Bain BEL, Bain CREW, and Bain BASE are specifically designed to reach students outside the traditional target school pipeline. These programs can lead directly to internship interviews. More on these programs below.
Step 4: Perfect your resume. Your resume is the single most important factor in getting through the screening stage. Every bullet should start with an action verb, include a quantified result, and demonstrate either analytical or leadership skills. Read our complete Bain resume guide for detailed formatting and content tips.
If you want expert help on your resume, our resume review and editing service gives you unlimited revisions and 24-hour turnarounds to help you land 3x more interviews.
Step 5: Submit your application early. Apply 4 to 5 days before the deadline. This signals genuine interest and gives Bain time to process your application. Check our Bain application deadline guide for the most current dates.
Step 6: Prepare intensely for case interviews. Since your biggest challenge is getting the interview, you want to make sure you convert it into an offer once you get one. Practice at least 30 to 50 cases before your Bain interview. If you want to learn case interviews quickly, my case interview course walks you through proven strategies in as little as 7 days.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Bain Hire from Non-Target Schools?
Yes, Bain hires from non-target schools every year. While the majority of hires come from target universities, Bain actively seeks candidates from diverse backgrounds. Networking, strong academics, and Bain's diversity pipeline programs (BEL, CREW, BASE, ADvantage) are the most effective paths for non-target candidates to get interviews.
What GPA Do You Need to Get Hired at Bain?
There is no official GPA cutoff, but most successful Bain candidates have a 3.5 GPA or higher. Bain uses a points-based system that weighs academics, work experience, and extracurricular leadership. A lower GPA can be offset by exceptional achievements in other areas, but a 3.5+ gives you the best chance of passing the resume screen.
Is It Harder to Get Into Bain Than McKinsey or BCG?
All three MBB firms have acceptance rates of roughly 1% to 3%. Bain's acceptance rate is comparable to McKinsey and BCG. However, Bain has the broadest target school list, which means more candidates get access to the structured recruiting pipeline. Once you are interviewing, the difficulty level is similar across all three firms.
Can You Get Into Bain Without an MBA?
Absolutely. Bain hires at the undergraduate level (Associate Consultant role), the MBA level (Consultant role), and through advanced degree and experienced hire channels. Many Bain consultants join straight out of undergrad with no MBA. An MBA is not required, though it does open additional roles and higher starting compensation.
What Majors Does Bain Prefer?
Bain does not require a specific major. Successful hires come from economics, engineering, math, computer science, the humanities, and many other fields. What matters more than your major is your ability to demonstrate analytical thinking, leadership, and strong communication skills through your resume and interviews.
How Do I Know If My School Is a Bain Target School?
Go to Bain's careers website and navigate to the Students section. If your school has its own dedicated page with a named recruiter and campus-specific information, it is a target school. If your school is not listed, you are considered a non-target candidate and will apply through Bain's general online portal.
