The BCG Consulting Career Assessment (CCA) is a 30-minute online screening test that BCG sends to candidates who pass the resume review stage. It evaluates your behavioral traits and logical reasoning ability to determine whether you move forward in the interview process. BCG introduced the CCA in August 2024, and it is now used across most global offices.

What Is the BCG Consulting Career Assessment?
The BCG Consulting Career Assessment (CCA) is a standardized online test that measures whether your skills and personality traits align with what BCG looks for in its consultants. According to BCG’s own FAQ document, the CCA uses industrial and organizational (IO) psychology practices and is designed and administered by SHL, a third-party talent assessment platform.
The test takes about 30 to 35 minutes to complete. You will receive an email with a link after passing the resume screening stage, and you have 24 hours from that email to finish the assessment.
The CCA is entirely computer-based. There is no video or camera requirement. You are allowed to use a calculator. And you cannot retake it, so your one attempt needs to count.
Where Does the BCG Consulting Career Aassessment Fit in the Hiring Process?
The CCA comes very early in BCG’s hiring process. It sits right after the resume and cover letter review and before any other online assessments or live interviews. Think of it as the first real hurdle after your application is accepted.

The BCG CCA has three distinct sections: an instructions section, a behavioral questions section, and a math and logic section. Each section tests something different, and the pacing varies. Here is what to expect in each one.
Section 1: What Happens in the Instructions Section?
The first section gives you up to 20 minutes to review the instructions and understand the format. This section is not scored, but it is critical. Candidates who rush through the instructions sometimes misunderstand the question formats in later sections, which costs them time and accuracy.
Read every instruction carefully. Pay attention to how the behavioral questions are structured and how the timed logic section works. These 20 minutes are a gift. Use them.
Section 2: What Are the Behavioral Questions Like?
The behavioral section is untimed and evaluates whether your personality and values align with BCG’s culture. There are no right or wrong answers. Instead, your responses are compared against a benchmark of traits that BCG values in successful consultants.
You will encounter two main types of behavioral questions:
- Phrase ranking questions: You are given three phrases and asked to pick the one that best describes you. These phrases relate to traits like communication, leadership, empathy, and how you handle deadlines.
- Perception questions: These ask how others, such as coworkers, professors, or managers, would evaluate your abilities. Topics include adaptability, teamwork, and your response to feedback.
BCG has stated that the CCA provides “unbiased, multi-dimensional insight into your potential for success at BCG.” The behavioral section is a big part of how they deliver on that. In my experience coaching hundreds of candidates, the best approach here is to answer honestly and quickly. Overthinking these questions rarely helps.
Section 3: What Are the Math and Logic Questions Like?
The math and logic section is the timed and scored portion of the CCA. You get 12 minutes to answer 8 questions. That is roughly 90 seconds per question, which makes speed essential.
These questions focus on logic and pattern recognition rather than heavy quantitative calculations. Based on candidate reports, the question types include:
- Logical sequence puzzles: Identify the next item in a pattern or sequence
- Calendar scheduling problems: Determine meeting times based on participant availability constraints
- Pattern recognition tasks: Find relationships between shapes, numbers, or visual elements
- Basic numerical reasoning: Quick math problems that test your ability to interpret data accurately
The CCA also includes 4 practice questions before the timed section begins. These practice questions are reportedly very similar to the real ones. Pay close attention to them because they will give you a feel for the format and difficulty level before the clock starts.
One important note: many candidates report that some questions appear to have more than one correct answer. The questions are intentionally ambiguous. If you get stuck, make your best choice and move on. Spending 3 minutes on a single question will leave you short on time for the remaining ones.
How Is the BCG Consulting Career Assessment Scored?
The BCG CCA does not have a traditional pass or fail score. The behavioral questions have no right or wrong answers and are instead benchmarked against traits that BCG values. The logic section is evaluated, but BCG looks at your overall profile rather than a single numeric score.
According to multiple MBB coaches, the CCA uses a holistic evaluation model. Your responses are compared against a profile of successful BCG consultants. This means that one missed question in the logic section is unlikely to sink your candidacy if the rest of your profile is strong.
That said, the CCA is still a screening tool. Based on candidate reports, many applicants do get screened out at this stage. Treat it seriously even though the format may feel less intense than a live case interview. Having coached hundreds of candidates through BCG’s recruiting process, I can tell you that the candidates who prepare for the CCA tend to perform significantly better than those who assume it will be easy.
How Is the BCG Consulting Career Assessment Different From Other BCG Tests?
BCG uses several different online assessments in its hiring process, and it is easy to confuse them. The CCA is not the same as the Pymetrics test, the Casey Chatbot, or the older Potential Test. Here is how they compare:

The key difference is that the CCA evaluates multiple dimensions at once. While the Pymetrics test focuses purely on behavioral traits through games and the Potential Test focused on quantitative skills, the CCA combines behavioral assessment with logic and pattern recognition in a single test. Does Every BCG Office Use the Consulting Career Assessment?
No. BCG assessment formats vary by geography. Candidates applying to most global offices, including all North American offices, will encounter the CCA. However, German offices have a completely different process.
If you are applying to BCG Germany, you will take a Cognitive Test (a digital reasoning exam focused on math, logic, and verbal ability under strict time pressure) followed by the BCG Real Life Assessment. The Real Life Assessment is a role-play style interview where you simulate real consultant situations such as persuading a client or handling objections.
Other offices outside of North America may also have slight variations. Always check the specific instructions in your invitation email. If something is unclear, reach out to your BCG recruiter directly.
How Should You Prepare for the BCG Consulting Career Assessment?
Preparation for the BCG CCA does not require months of study, but going in completely cold is a mistake. The math and logic section is timed and intentionally tricky, and the behavioral section rewards self-awareness. Here are seven strategies to help you pass.
Tip 1: Practice SHL-Style Logic and Pattern Recognition Tests
The CCA runs on the SHL platform, and SHL offers free practice tests on their website. These practice tests will help you get familiar with the interface, question styles, and pacing. Spend at least 1 to 2 hours working through SHL practice assessments before your real test.
In addition, GMAT quantitative and logical reasoning practice problems are excellent preparation for the math and logic section. Focus on pattern recognition and data interpretation questions rather than advanced math.
Tip 2: Reflect on Real Experiences That Show BCG’s Core Values
The behavioral questions ask how you would describe yourself and how others perceive your abilities. Before taking the CCA, spend 15 to 20 minutes reflecting on concrete examples from your past that demonstrate collaboration, leadership, curiosity, adaptability, and integrity.

With 8 questions in 12 minutes, you have roughly 90 seconds per question. Set a personal rule: if you are stuck on a question for more than 60 seconds, make your best guess and move on. Spending too long on one problem can leave you without enough time for easier questions later.
Practice with a timer during your preparation. Time pressure is the most common reason candidates underperform on the CCA, not the difficulty of the questions themselves.

Find a quiet space with a reliable internet connection. Close all other browser tabs and apps. Make sure your laptop is fully charged or plugged in. The last thing you want is a technical disruption during a timed section.

Answer quickly and honestly. Pick the phrase that genuinely describes you best. Trying to reverse-engineer what BCG wants to hear often leads to inconsistent responses, which the assessment is designed to detect.
What Happens After You Pass the BCG Consulting Career Assessment?
If you pass the CCA, you will be invited to take additional online assessments. Most candidates will face the BCG Pymetrics test or the BCG Online Case (Casey Chatbot), or sometimes both. Some offices also include a behavioral video interview at this stage.
After the online assessments, successful candidates move on to live BCG case interviews. BCG typically uses a two-round interview structure. The first round usually includes two 45-minute interviews combining case and behavioral questions. The final round adds two to three more interviews and may include a written case.
