Key Takeaways

Deadlines depend almost entirely on your candidate type, and undergraduates face the earliest and hardest cutoffs of any group.

  • McKinsey, BCG, and Bain closed undergraduate full-time applications on August 11, July 7, and July 19 in the 2026 cycle

  • Internship deadlines moved up sharply, with McKinsey's intern cutoff shifting from mid-July 2025 to March 29, 2026

  • Interview slots fill weeks before the posted date, so the deadline is a cutoff, not a target

  • Big 4 firms and most boutiques hire on a rolling basis with no single national deadline

  • Your school's portal date is often earlier than the firm's national date, and the earlier one governs

  • Missing an MBB cutoff costs you that firm for a year, not the whole recruiting season

What Are the Consulting Application Deadlines?

Consulting application deadlines vary by firm and candidate type. In the 2026 cycle, McKinsey's full-time Business Analyst deadline was August 11, BCG's Associate deadline was July 7, and Bain's Associate Consultant deadline was July 19. MBA deadlines run from August through November, while Big 4 firms hire on a rolling basis with no fixed cutoff.

The single fact that drives every date below is that consulting firms hire roughly a year in advance. McKinsey's full-time Business Analyst application that closed on August 11, 2026 was for students graduating between December 2026 and August 2027, according to McKinsey's US undergraduate careers page.

That one-year lead time is why so many candidates miss their window. They start looking for jobs in the fall of their senior year, months after the roles they wanted were already filled.

When Do Consulting Applications Open and Close by Candidate Type?

Your candidate type determines your calendar more than your target firm does. An undergraduate and an MBA applying to the same office in the same year face deadlines four months apart. Map your own consulting recruiting timeline before you look at any firm-specific date.

When are consulting deadlines for undergraduates and master's students?

Undergraduate deadlines are the earliest and the least forgiving. Full-time applications close between July and September, and internship applications now close as early as March.

The compression is real and recent. McKinsey's Summer Business Analyst deadline for the class of 2027 was July 17, 2025, according to postings from university career centers that cycle. One year later, the equivalent intern deadline had moved to March 29, 2026, nearly four months earlier.

If you are a sophomore or junior reading this in the fall, your internship application window may open in January. Plan around that, not around the fall career fair.

When are consulting deadlines for MBA students?

MBA deadlines split into two tracks. Second-year students apply for full-time roles in August and September, and first-year students apply for summer internships in November and December.

Most MBA dates are set by your school rather than published nationally. Firms coordinate directly with career services at target programs, which is why consulting MBA recruiting dates differ between two schools in the same city.

Pre-MBA programs run on a separate and much earlier calendar. Bain's Experience Bain program closed on May 4, 2026, months before standard MBA recruiting opened.

When are consulting deadlines for PhD, MD, and JD candidates?

Advanced degree candidates get two shots at every firm each year. Bridge and immersion programs close between February and April, and full-time applications close between June and September.

Bridge to BCG closed on March 23, 2026. Lumanity's Propel program closed February 28, 2026, and Trinity Life Sciences closed its transition program on March 23, 2026.

The bridge programs matter more than most candidates realize. They function as a full-time application wrapped inside a workshop, which is why getting into consulting as a PhD often comes down to hitting a February deadline rather than a September one.

When are consulting deadlines for experienced hires?

There are no deadlines for experienced hires. Every major firm, including all three MBB firms, accepts consulting experienced hire applications year round on a rolling basis.

That freedom is a trap. Without a date forcing action, most experienced candidates spend six months getting ready and apply in December, when firms have already committed headcount to campus hires.

Apply between March and May instead. Firms recalibrate staffing after the campus pipeline closes, and departures cluster right after year-end bonuses land.

What Are the MBB Application Deadlines?

All three MBB firms published confirmed dates for the 2026 cycle, and all three moved earlier than the prior year. The table below shows the 2026 cycle deadlines for undergraduate and master's roles, drawn from each firm's own careers pages.

Bain is the only MBB firm offering two genuine application windows for the same undergraduate internship role. On its student careers pages, Bain lists August 31, 2026 for Associate Consultant Intern applications and July 19, 2026 for Associate Consultant applications.

BCG confirmed on its US Associate careers page that both its 2027 Summer Internship and Full-Time applications have closed. Firm-specific dates shift every year, so check the current MBB application deadlines before you build your calendar around any of these.

The three firms also differ in how strictly they enforce the cutoff. McKinsey states that it continues reviewing Business Analyst Intern applications on a rolling basis after March 29, while BCG closes the portal outright.

What Are the Big 4 and Tier 2 Consulting Application Deadlines?

Big 4 firms mostly do not publish national deadlines at all. They post roles through campus portals and review applications as they arrive, which means the effective deadline is whenever the headcount fills.

Firm

Deadline type

What to expect

Deloitte

Rolling

No single firmwide consulting deadline. Roles close once headcount fills, and the strongest strategy seats go early

EY and EY-Parthenon

Mixed

Fixed early-cycle programs plus fall campus windows. Some undergraduate roles have closed as early as February

PwC and Strategy&

Mixed

Fall recruiting windows combined with rolling postings that vary by office and service line

KPMG

Rolling

Campus portal timelines set locally, with dates differing across offices and practices

Tier 2 and boutique firms sit in between. They publish real dates like MBB does, but those dates land later in the calendar, which makes them the most useful backup plan available.

Look at the gap. Cornerstone Research closes its internship application on September 27, six months after McKinsey closed its equivalent role, which is exactly why top boutique consulting firms deserve a place on your list even if MBB is your first choice.

What Is the Difference Between a Rolling Deadline and a Fixed Deadline?

A fixed deadline means the portal closes on a stated date and every application is reviewed against the same pool. A rolling deadline means the firm reviews applications as they arrive and stops when the seats are gone, whatever the posted date says.

The distinction changes your strategy completely. Under a fixed deadline, an application submitted on the last day is judged the same as one submitted on day one.

Under a rolling deadline, it is not. By the final week, the firm may have already committed most of its interview slots, and your application is competing for whatever is left.

Most Big 4 and boutique roles are rolling. Most MBB campus roles are nominally fixed but behave like rolling ones, for reasons covered in the next section.

Why Is the Real Deadline Earlier Than the Date the Firm Posts?

Because recruiters do not wait for the portal to close before they start screening. In my time at Bain, resumes were reviewed in batches throughout the application window, and by the time the stated deadline arrived a meaningful share of interview slots was already spoken for.

This is the most expensive misunderstanding in consulting recruiting. Candidates treat the deadline as a target date, polish for six weeks, and submit on the final afternoon into a pool that has already been half-picked.

Having coached hundreds of candidates through these cycles, I have never once seen someone rejected for applying too early. I have seen plenty rejected for applying on time.

Treat the opening date as your deadline. Submit within the first two weeks of the window opening, and accept that a strong application filed early beats a perfect application filed late.

That timing pressure is also why your consulting resume should be finished before applications open rather than during the window. If you want the fastest path to a polished document, my resume review and editing service gives you unlimited revisions with 24-hour turnaround.

Which Deadline Counts When Your School Posts a Different Date?

The earlier one. Firms publish a national deadline on their careers site and then set separate campus deadlines through school portals such as Handshake and 12Twenty, and the campus date is frequently earlier.

The reason is scheduling. Firms that interview on campus need resumes in hand before the on-site interview dates, so they pull the submission date forward for those schools.

Check both sources every cycle. Look at the firm's careers page for the national date, then check your school portal, then default to whichever comes first.

If your school does not appear in a firm's campus system, you are recruiting off-cycle at that firm and the national deadline is yours. Email the recruiting coordinator for your target office directly, since a well-timed message can get your application flagged during review.

How Do Consulting Application Deadlines Work Outside the United States?

Non-US deadlines are set office by office, not globally. Applying to a US office does not carry your application to a London or Singapore office, and each application must be submitted separately.

The UK runs earlier than the US for several roles. McKinsey's UK portal opened on January 1, 2026 with a national deadline of March 29, 2026, months ahead of the August 11 US full-time date. Anyone planning UK consulting recruiting should build their calendar around the January opening.

Continental Europe adds a wrinkle. Off-cycle internships lasting three to six months are common there and are posted throughout the year rather than in a single window.

Asia-Pacific offices in Singapore, Hong Kong, and Tokyo run on local graduation calendars, which frequently pushes their windows into the June to August range. Canadian deadlines broadly mirror the US with a short lag.

How Do You Build Your Own Consulting Deadline Calendar?

Build it backward from the earliest deadline on your list, not forward from today. Six steps get you a calendar you can actually run against.

  1. List your target firms: write down every firm you would accept an offer from, including at least three outside MBB

  2. Find each firm's date twice: pull the national deadline from the careers page and the campus deadline from your school portal, then keep the earlier one

  3. Sort by date and mark the earliest: that first date is the one your entire preparation schedule is built around

  4. Subtract two weeks: set your personal submission target two weeks before the posted date so you are in the first review batch

  5. Back out eight weeks for case prep: interviews often begin two to three weeks after a deadline, so your case practice needs to start before you submit

  6. Set calendar alerts on the opening dates: portals open quietly and firms rarely announce it loudly, so a reminder on the open date matters more than one on the close date

Step five is where most candidates go wrong. They wait for an interview invitation before starting case practice, then get three weeks' notice for a round that takes two months to prepare for properly.

The number of firms on that list matters too, and applying to more firms is not automatically better. Work out how many consulting firms you should apply to before you start filling in dates.

What Happens Between the Deadline and Your First Interview?

More than most candidates expect, and it starts fast. BCG sends its Consulting Career Assessment 30 to 90 minutes after you submit your application, and you have 48 hours to complete a test that takes about 35 minutes.

That timing catches people off guard. If you submit at midnight before a full day of classes, your 48-hour clock is running while you are unavailable.

The next stage is tied to the deadline, not to your submission date. BCG invites a selected group of candidates to complete a roughly 35-minute online case about two weeks after the application deadline closes.

This is why applying early does not mean hearing back early. Your application is screened early, but the invitation arrives on the firm's schedule, which is anchored to the closing date.

Interviews typically follow two to four weeks after that. From the deadline to a final decision, expect six to ten weeks at most large firms.

Use the waiting period to practice cases rather than to refresh your inbox. My case interview course takes you from beginner to a top 10% candidate in as little as 7 days, which fits neatly into the gap between submitting and interviewing.

What Should You Do If You Missed a Consulting Application Deadline?

Missing one deadline costs you one firm for one year. It does not end your recruiting cycle, and treating it that way is the actual mistake.

Work through these five moves in order.

  • Check whether the firm still reviews late applications: McKinsey continues reviewing Business Analyst Intern submissions on a rolling basis after its stated deadline

  • Apply to firms with later dates: L.E.K. and Cornerstone Research both closed in September in the 2026 cycle, weeks after MBB shut their portals

  • Target rolling employers immediately: Deloitte, EY-Parthenon, PwC, and KPMG accept applications year round, and strong candidates get picked up outside campus season

  • Email the recruiting coordinator for your target office: offices staff independently and occasionally open a late requisition that never reaches the campus portal

If you missed the window entirely and are planning for next year, use the extra months rather than losing them. Candidates who reapply to consulting after rejection or after a missed cycle succeed at a much higher rate when they arrive with a year of case practice behind them.

What Deadline Mistakes Cost Candidates Offers?

Four errors account for most of the missed opportunities I see, and every one of them is avoidable with a calendar.

Mistake #1: Assuming last year's dates still apply

Deadlines moved up by one to four months across MBB between the 2025 and 2026 cycles. A candidate working from a friend's timeline from two years ago would have missed McKinsey's intern deadline by more than a quarter.

Verify every date on the firm's own careers page in the cycle you are applying. Guides go stale within months, including this one.

Mistake #2: Only tracking full-time deadlines

Internship deadlines now land months before full-time ones at the same firm. McKinsey's 2026 intern deadline was March 29 and its full-time deadline was August 11, a gap of four and a half months.

Sophomores and juniors are the group most often caught out. If you are targeting a summer internship, your window may have opened and closed before you finished your spring semester.

Mistake #3: Submitting a rushed application to beat the date

Applying early works. Applying early with a resume full of unquantified bullet points does not, and these are the consulting application mistakes that sink otherwise strong candidates in the first screen.

The fix is sequencing. Finish your resume in the months before the portal opens so that on opening day you are submitting, not drafting.

Mistake #4: Applying to one firm and waiting

Some candidates submit to McKinsey in July, wait for a response, and only start their BCG application after the rejection arrives in September. By then BCG has closed.

Submit every application inside its own window regardless of what you have heard back. Firms make decisions independently and none of them will hold a seat while another firm deliberates.

Consulting application deadlines reward preparation far more than they reward talent, because the most qualified candidate in the world cannot be hired after the portal closes. Build your calendar this week, mark the opening dates rather than the closing ones, and have your resume finished before the first window opens.

Frequently Asked Questions

When do consulting applications open?

Most undergraduate consulting applications open between January and July. McKinsey opened its 2026 cycle Business Analyst Intern window on January 1, 2026 and its full-time Business Analyst window on June 1, 2026. MBA applications generally open in August and September. Big 4 firms post roles throughout the year with no fixed opening date.

What should you do if you missed a consulting application deadline?

Check whether the firm reviews late applications on a rolling basis, since McKinsey does this for its Business Analyst Intern role. Then apply to firms with later deadlines, such as L.E.K. and Cornerstone Research, which close in September. Big 4 and boutique firms accept applications year round, so a missed MBB deadline does not end your cycle.

Do consulting firms hire year round?

Big 4 firms and most boutiques hire year round on a rolling basis. MBB firms run structured campus cycles for undergraduate, master's, and MBA roles, but they hire experienced professionals year round with no fixed deadline. March through May is the strongest window for experienced hire applications.

How long after applying will you hear back from consulting firms?

Most firms respond within two to four weeks of the application deadline rather than within two to four weeks of your submission. BCG invites a select group of candidates to its online case roughly two weeks after the application deadline. If you applied early, expect a longer wait than the calendar suggests.

Are campus deadlines different from firm deadlines?

Yes, and campus deadlines are usually earlier. Firms publish one national deadline on their careers site, then set separate and often earlier dates through school portals such as Handshake and 12Twenty. When the two dates differ, treat the earlier one as your real deadline.

Can you apply to more than one deadline at the same firm?

Bain runs two US application windows for its Associate Consultant Intern role, dated March 29 and August 31 in the 2026 cycle, and candidates choose one. You should not submit the same role twice in one cycle. Applying to a US office also does not carry over to an international office, so international applications must be submitted separately.
