Consulting Diversity Programs: Complete Guide (2026)

Consulting diversity programs are structured recruiting initiatives at McKinsey, BCG, Bain, and other top consulting firms that give underrepresented candidates early access to mentorship, case training, and interview opportunities. These programs have become one of the most important pipelines for landing consulting offers.
In this article, I will walk you through every major consulting diversity program available to undergraduates and MBA students, explain how each program works, and share the application strategies that give you the best shot at getting in.
But first, a quick heads up:
McKinsey, BCG, Bain, and other top firms accept less than 1% of applicants every year. If you want to triple your chances of landing interviews and 8x your chances of passing them, watch my free 40-minute training.
What Are Consulting Diversity Programs?
Consulting diversity programs are firm-sponsored events, workshops, internships, and scholarships designed to attract, develop, and recruit candidates from underrepresented backgrounds into the consulting industry. Most programs target students who identify as Black, Hispanic or Latino, Indigenous, women, LGBTQ+, first-generation college students, or people with disabilities.
These programs range from one-day virtual workshops for freshmen to ten-week paid summer internships for sophomores. The common thread is that they all serve as early recruiting pipelines. According to recruiting data from major consulting firms, candidates who participate in diversity programs are significantly more likely to receive interview invitations and eventual offers compared to candidates who apply through standard channels.
In my experience coaching hundreds of consulting candidates, I have seen diversity programs act as accelerators. They do not lower the hiring bar. They give qualified candidates from underrepresented backgrounds the same access to preparation resources, mentorship, and recruiter relationships that candidates from traditional feeder schools already have.
Why Do Consulting Firms Offer Diversity Programs?
Consulting firms invest heavily in diversity programs for both business and ethical reasons. According to a McKinsey report on diversity and financial performance, companies in the top quartile for ethnic and gender diversity are 36% more likely to outperform peers on profitability. Consulting firms apply this same logic internally.
Bain's own research shows that employees in diverse and inclusive companies are 5.4 times more likely to stay long-term. For consulting firms that spend tens of thousands of dollars training each new hire, retention matters enormously.
Beyond performance data, diversity programs help firms solve a practical recruiting challenge. Top consulting firms have historically drawn candidates from a narrow set of elite universities. Diversity programs expand the talent pool by reaching students at schools and from backgrounds that traditional on-campus recruiting misses.
BCG has committed to achieving a 50:50 gender ratio in its consultant ranks. McKinsey runs dedicated programs for its Black Network, Hispanic and Latino Network, and other affinity groups. Bain offers pipeline programs starting as early as freshman year. These are not token gestures. They are core recruiting infrastructure.
What Consulting Diversity Programs Does McKinsey Offer?
McKinsey offers one of the broadest sets of diversity programs in consulting, covering freshmen through incoming MBA students. Here are the key programs to know.
McKinsey Sophomore Summer Business Analyst Program
The McKinsey Sophomore Summer Business Analyst (SSBA) program is an 8 to 10 week paid internship for second-year undergraduates. It is McKinsey's flagship early-career diversity pipeline and one of the most competitive programs in consulting. Interns work on real client engagements alongside full-time consultants.
Successful SSBAs often receive return offers for junior-year internships or full-time roles after graduation. Applications typically open in early fall with an October deadline. You will need a strong resume, a cover letter, and strong case interview skills to be competitive. If you want to prepare for the case interview, check out my case interview course for proven strategies you can learn in as little as 7 days.
McKinsey LAUNCH Leadership Incubator
LAUNCH is sponsored by the McKinsey Black Network and targets sophomore undergraduates. The program focuses on leadership development and consulting career exploration through workshops, mentorship, and networking events.
Applications typically open in early spring with a March deadline. LAUNCH participants gain access to McKinsey recruiters and are well positioned for the SSBA and future internship opportunities.
McKinsey Up Next and El Futuro Summits
Up Next is a first-year leadership summit sponsored by McKinsey's Black and Indigenous Networks. El Futuro serves the same purpose for McKinsey's Hispanic and Latino Network. Both programs introduce freshmen to consulting as a career through interactive sessions and mentorship.
These are among the earliest diversity touchpoints in consulting recruiting. Participating as a freshman signals serious interest to McKinsey and builds relationships that pay off during sophomore and junior year recruiting.
McKinsey Ignite
McKinsey Ignite is a half-day program for undergraduate women interested in consulting. It includes panel discussions, skill-building workshops, and networking with women leaders at McKinsey. The program is typically held on partner campuses and led by the local McKinsey recruiting team.
While shorter than other programs, Ignite is a valuable first step for women exploring consulting careers. It provides direct access to McKinsey recruiters at your school.
McKinsey Inspire and Early Access (Pre-MBA Programs)
McKinsey Inspire is a two-day immersive event for incoming MBA students from underrepresented backgrounds, including those who identify as Black, Hispanic, Latino, or Native American. Participants connect with McKinsey's diversity networks, attend case workshops, and sharpen interview skills.
McKinsey Early Access is a broader pre-MBA program open to incoming students at McKinsey's 17 target business schools. Both programs run in the summer before business school starts. If you are admitted to both, McKinsey encourages you to attend both. The application deadline is typically in May. To learn more about pre-MBA programs, check out our complete guide to pre-MBA programs.
McKinsey Emerging Scholars
The McKinsey Emerging Scholars program is a scholarship opportunity for pre-MBA students. Selected participants receive individual mentorship from a McKinsey consultant, access to a network of other scholars, and a monetary award of up to $10,000.
This is one of the few consulting diversity programs that includes a direct financial award along with mentorship.
What Consulting Diversity Programs Does BCG Offer?
BCG's diversity programs cover freshmen through MBA students, with a strong emphasis on hands-on consulting experience for sophomores.
BCG Growing Future Leaders
Growing Future Leaders is BCG's marquee diversity internship for sophomore undergraduates from underrepresented groups. Over 10 weeks in the summer, participants work on real client projects alongside BCG consultants. This is a paid internship with strong conversion rates to junior-year return offers.
The application deadline is typically in mid-September, which is earlier than most sophomore programs. According to BCG recruiting data, the Growing Future Leaders program is one of the primary pipelines for diverse talent entering the firm at the undergraduate level.
BCG Bridge to Consulting
Bridge to Consulting is a two-day program for freshman and sophomore students from diverse backgrounds. It provides a first look at BCG's work, culture, and people through case workshops, interactive sessions, and networking events.
This program is a great entry point if you are new to consulting and want to understand what management consulting looks like before committing to longer programs.
BCG Advance
BCG Advance is a one-week program exclusively for sophomore women interested in consulting. Participants receive an introduction to BCG's work, mentorship from BCG consultants, and hands-on training through case workshops.
Advance is one of the few consulting diversity programs focused specifically on gender equity at the undergraduate level. The application deadline is typically in March.
BCG Empower and Unlock (Pre-MBA Programs)
BCG Empower is a three-day workshop for incoming MBA students who identify as Black, Hispanic, Latino, or Indigenous. It includes small group sessions, case preparation, and social events. Empower is part of BCG Unlock, a broader summer learning program that introduces MBAs to BCG.
BCG Unlock also includes programming for women, veterans, and LGBTQ+ candidates. These pre-MBA programs give incoming business school students a head start on fall recruiting season.
What Consulting Diversity Programs Does Bain Offer?
Bain offers diversity programs at every level, from a freshman virtual experience to a pre-MBA program that includes real case team staffing. Bain's approach is notable for how early it starts the pipeline.
Bain Building Entrepreneurial Leaders (BEL) Program
The BEL program is a five-day summer internship for sophomore students who identify as Black, Hispanic, Latino, or Indigenous. Participants visit a Bain office in North America, receive consulting training, and work alongside Bain consultants on real projects.
BEL is one of the most selective sophomore diversity programs in consulting. The interview process includes a mini case and fit interview questions. Admitted students may also have the opportunity to receive a summer Associate Consultant Intern offer. The application typically opens in January with interviews in March or April.
Bain CREW (Connecting and Resourcing Empowered Women)
CREW is a 1.5-day program for sophomore women interested in consulting. Participants learn about Bain's culture, connect with women leaders at the firm, and receive guidance on navigating the consulting recruiting process.
CREW participants also have an opportunity to interview for a Bain summer internship role. The application deadline is typically in November.
Bain Consulting Kickstart
Consulting Kickstart is a 1.5-day program for freshman students from diverse backgrounds. It is one of the earliest consulting firm touchpoints available to first-year students.
Participants engage in interactive case workshops, network with Bain professionals, and gain early exposure to what consulting careers look like. Applications typically open in spring with an April deadline.
Bain Freshman Leadership Accelerator (FLA)
The FLA is a virtual program for first-year students that focuses on leadership development and consulting career exploration. It includes workshops, problem-solving exercises, and networking with Bain consultants.
FLA is designed for students who are just beginning to explore whether consulting is the right career path. The application typically opens in January.
Bain BASE Program (Pre-MBA)
The BASE (Building and Supporting Excellence) program is Bain's flagship pre-MBA diversity initiative. It is a one-week experience for incoming Black, Hispanic, Latino, and Indigenous MBA students. Participants receive a full day of consulting training and then are staffed onto a real Bain case team for several days.
BASE is widely considered one of the most immersive pre-MBA programs in consulting because it includes actual client work. Participants may also have the opportunity to secure a Summer Associate offer before business school starts. The application deadline is typically in May.
What Consulting Diversity Programs Do Other Firms Offer?
Beyond MBB, the Big Four accounting firms and several other strategy consultancies run robust diversity programs. Here are the most important ones.
Deloitte DLAMP and Discovery Internship
Deloitte's Leadership, Allyship, and Mentorship Program (DLAMP) pairs diverse sophomore students from over 30 universities with junior and senior mentors at Deloitte. Deloitte's Discovery Internship is a broader diversity internship covering both consulting and accounting tracks.
Both programs serve as early pipelines into Deloitte's full-time recruiting. Applications are typically managed through campus recruiting teams, with deadlines varying by school.
EY Expedition EY
Expedition EY is a virtual experience for freshman and sophomore students from underrepresented backgrounds. It offers career development workshops, networking with EY professionals, and an introduction to professional services and consulting.
The program typically opens for applications in January. It is a good option for students who want exposure to consulting without committing to a multi-day in-person event.
PwC Black Talent in Business and Start Internship
PwC's Black Talent in Business program is a three-day immersive experience for sophomore students interested in consulting and professional services. PwC's Start Internship is a broader diversity internship for sophomores that offers hands-on experience and skill-building across PwC's consulting practice.
PwC also runs the Women's Consulting Experience, which empowers undergraduate women to explore consulting through case studies, workshops, and networking. All PwC diversity programs use rolling applications.
KPMG Embark and Rise Programs
KPMG's Embark Scholars program rotates diverse interns through the firm's Audit, Tax, Advisory, and Business Process practices. KPMG Rise is a leadership program for freshmen and sophomores who are first-generation college students, veterans, individuals with disabilities, members of the LGBTQ+ community, or people of color.
Rise takes place at the KPMG Lakehouse in Orlando, Florida, and includes networking, career development, and potential interview opportunities for future internships.
L.E.K. Kaleidoscope, Oliver Wyman, and FTI Consulting Programs
L.E.K. Consulting's Kaleidoscope program is a two-day experience for sophomore and junior students from diverse backgrounds. Oliver Wyman's First-Year Immersion Program targets freshmen interested in consulting. FTI Consulting's IMPACT Summer Leadership Program is a two-day program for diverse sophomores.
These boutique and mid-tier firm programs are less competitive than MBB equivalents but still provide meaningful recruiting advantages. They can also serve as stepping stones to MBB if you decide to recruit again as a junior or at the MBA level.

How Do You Apply to Consulting Diversity Programs?
The application process for consulting diversity programs varies by firm and program, but most require a resume, a short application or cover letter, and sometimes unofficial transcripts or test scores. Here is a month-by-month timeline to help you plan.
- September to October: Apply for BCG Growing Future Leaders and McKinsey SSBA. These are the earliest sophomore program deadlines.
- November: Apply for Bain CREW. Begin preparing your resume and cover letter for January deadlines.
- January to February: Apply for Bain BEL, Bain FLA, KPMG Rise, and Deloitte DLAMP. Many campus-specific deadlines fall in this window.
- March: Apply for McKinsey LAUNCH, McKinsey Ignite, BCG Advance, and BCG Bridge to Consulting. L.E.K. Kaleidoscope also typically falls in this range.
- April to May: Apply for Bain Consulting Kickstart (freshmen), McKinsey Inspire, McKinsey Early Access, Bain BASE, and BCG Empower. These are the main pre-MBA program deadlines.
For every application, your consulting resume needs to be polished. Make sure your resume follows the standard consulting format with quantified bullet points and no technical jargon. You can learn exactly how to write a consulting resume in our consulting resume guide.
If the program includes interviews, expect a mini case component and fit or behavioral questions. Having coached candidates through these programs, I can tell you that preparation matters enormously. Even a one-week program like BEL includes a case interview. Our case interview guide covers exactly what to expect and how to prepare.
Do Consulting Diversity Programs Help You Get Hired?
Yes. Consulting diversity programs are early recruiting pipelines, and they create measurable advantages in the hiring process. According to recruiting data, nearly half of the students admitted to some full-time consulting roles previously attended a diversity or early-ID program at that firm.
There are three main ways these programs help.
First, they give you early interview access. Many diversity programs lead directly to internship offers or early interview slots. For example, Bain BEL participants may receive Associate Consultant Intern offers. McKinsey SSBA interns frequently receive return offers. This means you can lock in an offer months before general recruiting opens.
Second, they build recruiter relationships. General applicants submit a resume online and hope for a callback. Diversity program participants spend days or weeks working directly with firm consultants and recruiters. When recruiting season arrives, those recruiters already know your name, your strengths, and your interest in the firm.
Third, they accelerate your preparation. Most programs include case workshops, presentation training, and mentorship. You get free, high-quality coaching from current consultants. A Glassdoor survey found that 67% of job seekers consider diversity an important factor when evaluating employers, which means firms are motivated to make these programs genuinely valuable.
What Should You Do If You Do Not Get Into a Diversity Program?
Diversity programs are highly selective, and most applicants do not get in. That does not mean your consulting career is over. Many successful consultants at MBB and other top firms never participated in a diversity program.
Here is what to do instead.
Apply through the standard recruiting process. Every major consulting firm accepts applications from all candidates during general recruiting. The McKinsey interview process, BCG interview process, and Bain interview process are all designed to evaluate any qualified candidate, regardless of whether they attended a diversity program.
Network proactively. Reach out to consultants at your target firms through LinkedIn, alumni networks, and campus events. Ask for informational interviews. Building these relationships outside of a formal program can provide similar benefits.
Prepare rigorously. The single biggest factor in landing a consulting offer is how well you perform in case interviews and fit interviews. If you prepare thoroughly, you can outperform candidates who attended diversity programs but did not practice enough. Our fit interview course covers 98% of the behavioral questions you will face in just a few hours.
Apply to multiple firms and program types. Do not put all your eggs in one basket. Apply to programs at several firms simultaneously. If you are rejected from MBB programs, Big Four and boutique firm programs offer similar early exposure and recruiting advantages.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are Consulting Diversity Programs Only for Certain Racial or Ethnic Backgrounds?
No. While many consulting diversity programs target students who identify as Black, Hispanic, Latino, or Indigenous, other programs are designed for women, LGBTQ+ students, first-generation college students, veterans, and people with disabilities. Each program has its own eligibility criteria listed on the firm's website.
Do Consulting Diversity Programs Lower the Hiring Bar?
No. Consulting diversity programs do not lower the hiring standard. They provide additional access, preparation, and mentorship, but every candidate must still pass the same case interviews and fit interviews as general applicants. In my experience at Bain, the interview evaluation criteria were identical for all candidates regardless of how they entered the recruiting funnel.
When Should You Start Applying to Consulting Diversity Programs?
As early as your freshman year of college. Bain Consulting Kickstart and BCG Bridge to Consulting both accept freshmen. McKinsey's Up Next and El Futuro summits target first-year students. Starting early gives you more touchpoints with firms before the high-stakes junior year recruiting season.
Can You Apply to Diversity Programs at Multiple Consulting Firms?
Yes. There is no rule preventing you from applying to diversity programs at multiple firms in the same cycle. In fact, applying to several programs increases your chances of getting into at least one. Just make sure you tailor each application to the specific firm and program.
What Happens After You Complete a Consulting Diversity Program?
Outcomes vary by program. Some programs like the McKinsey SSBA and BCG Growing Future Leaders can lead directly to internship return offers. Other programs like BCG Bridge to Consulting or McKinsey Ignite provide networking and preparation advantages that help during future recruiting cycles. In all cases, you will be on the firm's radar for future opportunities.
