A consulting offer letter is the written document that confirms your title, office, start date, base salary, signing bonus, and the deadline by which you have to accept. This guide covers every clause worth reading twice, what you can actually negotiate, and how to buy yourself more time without putting the offer at risk.

Key Takeaways

A consulting offer letter puts your job terms in writing, and the three parts that decide the most money are the acceptance deadline, the signing bonus repayment clause, and the conditions that let the firm pull the offer.

  • Most consulting offers give you two to three weeks from the written offer date to sign

  • Base salary and signing bonus are standardized for campus hires and almost never move

  • Start date, office, and deferral are the terms firms actually flex on

  • Signing bonus clawbacks typically run 12 to 24 months and are often repayable at the gross, pre-tax amount

  • The offer stays conditional on your degree, your background check, and your work authorization until your first day

What Is a Consulting Offer Letter?

A consulting offer letter is a written document from a consulting firm confirming the terms of a job: title, office, start date, base salary, signing bonus, benefits eligibility, and the date by which you must accept. In the United States it is normally not a binding employment contract, because it confirms at-will employment instead.

The letter almost always follows a verbal offer by phone. Recruiters call first, then send the paperwork within a few business days.

You will sign more than one document. The offer letter sits alongside a confidentiality agreement, a signing bonus repayment agreement, and sometimes an arbitration agreement. Read all of them, because the repayment terms usually live in the second document rather than in the letter itself.

What Is Included in a Consulting Offer Letter?

A consulting offer letter includes ten standard sections: your role and level, office, start date, base salary, signing bonus, performance bonus eligibility, relocation support, benefits, the conditions the offer depends on, and the acceptance deadline. Everything else in the document is boilerplate.

Section

What it covers

Why it matters

Role and level

Your job title, such as Business Analyst, Associate, or Consultant

Sets your promotion clock and your first two years of pay

Office

The office you are staffed out of, plus hybrid and travel expectations

One of the few terms firms will move on before you sign

Start date

The day employment begins, often a range for campus hires

Deferrals and later start dates are usually negotiable

Base salary

Your annual base, paid on the firm's normal payroll cycle

Standardized by level and class year at large firms

Signing bonus

A one-time payment made at or shortly after your start date

Almost always tied to a repayment clause if you leave early

Performance bonus

Your eligibility for a year-end bonus, stated as a target or range

The wording is eligibility, not a guarantee

Relocation support

A lump sum or reimbursement for moving to your office city

Frequently carries its own repayment period

Benefits

Health, retirement, and paid time off, referencing separate plan documents

The letter rarely contains the actual plan terms

Conditions of the offer

Background check, work authorization, degree completion, references

Any one of these can undo the offer before you start

Acceptance deadline

The date by which you must sign and return the letter

Missing it can void the offer entirely

Notice what is missing. The letter rarely spells out your health plan details, your paid time off allowance, or your promotion timeline, and points you to separate plan documents instead.

Your level is the line that quietly determines the most. It fixes where you enter the consulting career path and how long you wait for your first promotion.

How Long Do You Have to Accept a Consulting Offer?

Most consulting firms give you two to three weeks from the written offer date. According to offer deadline guidance published by the MIT Sloan Career Development Office, McKinsey gave MBA candidates two weeks for fall full-time offers and three weeks for summer internship offers in the 2025 to 2026 recruiting season.

BCG gave three weeks for fall full-time offers over the same season. Bain took a different approach and set fixed calendar dates rather than rolling windows, with a fall full-time deadline of October 17, 2025 and a summer internship deadline of January 30, 2026.

Firm

Full-time offer

Summer internship offer

Return offer

McKinsey

2 weeks from the written offer date

3 weeks from the written offer date

2 weeks from the written offer date

BCG

3 weeks from the written offer date

Fixed date in late January

2 weeks from the end of the internship

Bain

Fixed date in mid October

Fixed date in late January, extensions honored

Fixed date in early September

Offers that land early in the consulting recruiting timeline tend to come with the shortest fuses. Firms want to lock in their class before competitors extend, so a September offer usually gives you less breathing room than a March one.

Can you get an extension on a consulting offer deadline?

Yes, and asking is normal. BCG tells students they can request more time and lets individual offices decide, and Bain said it would honor extension requests up to school-approved deadlines for summer internship offers.

Ask your recruiter directly, propose a specific new date, and give a reason. Vague requests get vague answers.

In my experience at Bain, extension requests almost never cost a candidate the offer. What does hurt is going silent for two weeks and then asking for more time the day before the deadline.

Tier 2 consulting firms usually give longer windows, sometimes a month or more. That gap matters if you are sequencing multiple processes and want an MBB result before you answer anyone else.

What Should You Check Before You Sign a Consulting Offer Letter?

There are eight things to check line by line. The two that cost candidates real money are the signing bonus repayment clause and any verbal promise that never made it into the document.

  1. Start date: confirm the exact day, not the month, and check whether it is fixed or a window you can choose within

  2. Office: make sure the office named is the one you interviewed for, since a mismatch here is hard to fix after you sign

  3. Base salary: compare the figure against the current management consultant salary range for your level so you know whether the number is standard

  4. Signing bonus: note the amount, the payment date, and the length of the repayment window, since the consulting signing bonus is almost never yours free and clear on day one

  5. Relocation: check whether the relocation bonus is a lump sum or a reimbursement, and how long you have to stay before it is safe

  6. Performance bonus: read whether the letter says eligible or guaranteed, because the consulting bonus structure at most firms ties the payout to a rating you have not earned yet

  7. Conditions: list every contingency the offer depends on and make sure you can satisfy each one before your start date

  8. Verbal promises: if a recruiter or partner told you something about staffing, office, or start date, it needs to be in the letter or in an email

Check the base figure against reported data before you assume it is standard. Levels.fyi reports a median total compensation package of roughly $120,900 for a McKinsey Business Analyst in the United States, with about $110,200 of that as base pay.

The repayment clause deserves its own read. Many firms require you to repay the gross, pre-tax amount of the signing bonus if you leave inside the clawback window, and your bonus was taxed on the way in.

Signing bonuses count as supplemental wages, which employers may withhold at a flat 22% federal rate under IRS Publication 15. Social Security and Medicare come out on top of that.

Let's say your signing bonus is $30,000. After federal withholding and payroll taxes, roughly $21,000 lands in your account, so repaying the gross figure later means writing a check for about $9,000 more than you ever saw.

What Can You Negotiate in a Consulting Offer Letter?

Base salary and signing bonus are standardized at large consulting firms and will not move for campus hires. Start date, office, deferral, and relocation support are where firms actually say yes.

The reason is structural. Firms hire campus classes in cohorts and pay everyone at a given level identically, so moving your base would mean re-cutting the whole class.

Term

Campus hire

Experienced or lateral hire

Base salary

Fixed by level and class year

Some room, especially against a competing written offer

Signing bonus

Standardized and rarely moves

Negotiable when you are forfeiting a bonus elsewhere

Start date

Usually flexible within a stated window

Usually flexible around your notice period

Office

Possible before you sign, much harder after

Possible, tied to where the staffing need sits

Relocation support

Standard package, occasionally topped up

More room, especially for international moves

Deferral

Common for grad school or a fellowship

Rare outside of visa timing

If you do have a competing written offer, how you raise it matters more than the fact that you have it. The mechanics of how to negotiate a consulting offer come down to being specific, being warm, and asking once.

Post-MBA offers follow the same logic. A post-MBA consulting salary is fixed by class year and level, and the tuition reimbursement or fellowship terms are the only pieces with real give.

What Contingencies Can Cause a Consulting Offer to Be Rescinded?

Consulting offers stay conditional until your first day. The standard conditions are degree completion, a satisfactory academic record, a background check, verified work authorization, and reference checks.

  • Degree completion: your offer assumes you graduate on schedule and in the program listed on your application

  • Academic record: many letters require you to maintain a strong record through graduation, which targets failed courses rather than a tenth of a GPA point

  • Background check: firms verify employers, dates, and titles, so an invented role is a real risk and a two-month date error is not

  • Work authorization: the letter should confirm whether the firm will sponsor you, and consulting visa sponsorship terms belong in writing before you sign

  • Reference checks: usually a formality for campus hires and a genuine step for experienced hires

The honest read is that rescinded offers at large consulting firms are rare, and almost all of them trace back to something the candidate misrepresented. Having coached hundreds of candidates through this stage, the only ones who got into trouble had inflated a GPA or invented a title.

How Do You Accept a Consulting Offer Letter?

Reply to your recruiter in writing, sign the letter and every attached agreement, return them before the stated deadline, and keep a countersigned copy. Ask your questions before you sign, not after.

  1. Ask your questions first: get answers on start date flexibility, office, and repayment windows while you still have room to decide

  2. Confirm in writing: email your recruiter to accept rather than relying on a phone call

  3. Sign every document: the offer letter, the confidentiality agreement, and any bonus repayment agreement all need signatures

  4. Return it early: aim for two or three days before the deadline so a technical problem does not become your problem

  5. Save your own copy: download a countersigned PDF of everything and keep it somewhere you will still have access after you lose your school email

Keep the acceptance email short. Thank the recruiter, confirm the role, office, and start date in one line each, and say you have signed and returned the paperwork.

Then withdraw from your other processes the same week. Recruiters across firms talk to each other, and candidates who sit on multiple live offers past their deadlines get remembered.

How Do You Decline a Consulting Offer Without Burning Bridges?

Call your recruiter, tell them your decision directly, then follow up in writing the same day. Do it as soon as you have decided rather than waiting for the deadline.

Say where you are going and why in one sentence. Firms track where they lose candidates, and a straight answer is far more useful to them than a vague one.

Do not use a decline as a bluff. If you would not accept a revised offer, asking for one only costs you goodwill at a firm you may want to rejoin in three years.

Your consulting offer letter is the last document you will read before the terms become permanent, and most candidates skim it because they are relieved. Read it twice, flag anything you were promised verbally that is not in the text, and get that answer in writing before your deadline passes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a consulting offer letter legally binding?

In the United States, most consulting offer letters are not employment contracts. They confirm at-will employment, which means either side can end the relationship at any time. The documents attached to the letter, such as a signing bonus repayment agreement, are usually the parts that create real financial obligations.

How long does it take to get a consulting offer letter after your final interview?

Most firms call with a verbal offer within one to three business days of your final round. The written offer letter usually follows within a week of that call. Your acceptance clock typically starts on the written offer date rather than the phone call, so ask the recruiter to confirm the exact deadline.

Can you negotiate salary in a consulting offer letter?

Not as a campus hire. Base salary and signing bonus are set by level and class year at large consulting firms, and recruiters cannot change them for one person without re-cutting the entire class. Experienced and lateral hires have genuine room, especially with a competing written offer in hand.

What happens if you sign a consulting offer letter and then back out?

You can withdraw, because at-will employment cuts both ways. If your signing bonus or relocation payment has already been paid, you will usually have to repay it under the repayment agreement you signed. Tell the recruiter directly instead of going quiet, since consulting recruiting teams keep records that follow you into future cycles.

What is the difference between a consulting offer letter and a consulting agreement?

An offer letter hires you as an employee of the firm and covers title, salary, start date, and benefits. A consulting agreement engages you as an independent contractor and covers scope of work, fees, intellectual property, and confidentiality. If a company is bringing you on as a contractor rather than a full-time consultant, expect a consulting agreement and a Form W-9 instead of an offer letter.

Can a consulting firm rescind an offer after you have signed it?

Yes, if a stated condition of the offer is not met. Failing to complete your degree on schedule, misrepresenting your background, or losing work authorization can all void a signed offer. Firms occasionally rescind for business reasons too, although that is uncommon at large consulting firms.
