Consulting Salary Australia: Pay by Firm and Level

Author: Taylor Warfield, Former Bain Manager and interviewer

Last Updated: October 30, 2026

Consulting salary in Australia runs from about A$67,000 for Big 4 graduates to over A$500,000 for partners, with McKinsey, BCG, and Bain analysts earning roughly A$100,000 to A$115,000 in total pay. Australian offers are also quoted differently from American ones, so this guide breaks pay down by firm, by level, by city, and by what actually reaches your bank account.

Key Takeaways

Three things set your pay in Australian consulting: the firm you join, your level, and whether the number you were quoted already includes superannuation.

  • Analysts at McKinsey, BCG, and Bain in Australia report A$100,000 to A$115,000 in total pay

  • Big 4 consultants start near A$67,000 and reach A$83,000 to A$100,000 by senior consultant

  • Superannuation adds 12% on top of your pay, and whether it sits inside the quoted number moves your cash by thousands

  • Sydney and Melbourne pay almost identically inside the same firm, so the Sydney premium in market data is a mix effect

  • The steepest jump happens after engagement manager, where partner-track pay clears A$400,000

  • Australian pay converts to about 70% of the US figure, but the real gap narrows once super, leave, and healthcare are counted

What Is the Average Consulting Salary in Australia?

The average consulting salary in Australia is about A$87,000 to A$100,000 per year depending on which dataset you use. Indeed reported an average of A$87,371 in April 2026, while Glassdoor put average total pay for consulting roles at A$100,000 in May 2026. Strategy consultants at the top firms sit well above both numbers.

Those averages blend everything from IT implementation contractors to recruitment consultants, which is why they read low to anyone targeting strategy work. SEEK placed the typical consultant band at A$85,000 to A$105,000 in 2026 and put the Sydney figure at A$115,000. Use these as a floor, not a benchmark.

How Are Consulting Salaries Structured in Australia?

An Australian consulting offer has three parts: base salary, superannuation, and a performance bonus. Superannuation is the piece that catches out anyone who has only seen American offers, because employers are legally required to pay 12% of your qualifying earnings into a retirement fund on top of your wages. That rate has applied since 1 July 2025 and there is no further increase legislated.

Here is the trap. Australian firms quote pay two different ways, and the difference is real money.

  • Base plus super: a quoted A$120,000 means A$120,000 in cash and A$14,400 into your super fund, for a package of A$134,400

  • Package inclusive of super: a quoted A$120,000 means about A$107,100 in cash and A$12,900 into super

That single distinction is worth roughly A$12,900 in take-home cash per year on a A$120,000 offer. In my experience at Bain, more candidates lost money to this than to any negotiation mistake, because they compared two offers that were quoted on different bases and never asked. Always get the structure confirmed in writing before you compare anything.

Bonuses in Australia are smaller and less standardized than in the United States. At the Big 4, Glassdoor data from 2026 shows additional pay of only A$2,000 to A$5,000 at consultant and manager levels. At the top strategy firms bonuses are meaningful, with Bain associate consultants reporting a median bonus of A$15,000 and BCG Sydney consultants reporting A$20,000 to A$38,000.

Two more Australian details matter. Under the Payday Super rules that began on 1 July 2026, the Australian Taxation Office requires your super to reach your fund within 7 business days of each payday, replacing the old quarterly cycle. Employers also stop paying super once your earnings pass the maximum contribution base, set at A$270,830 for the 2026-27 year, which only bites at partner level.

What Do McKinsey, BCG, and Bain Pay in Australia?

Undergraduate hires at MBB firms in Australia earn roughly A$95,000 to A$115,000 in total first-year pay. Post-MBA hires jump to A$170,000 to A$230,000, and associate partners clear A$330,000. The figures below come from Glassdoor and Levels.fyi submissions filed during 2025 and 2026.

Two patterns are worth pulling out of that table. The undergraduate entry number is remarkably tight across all three firms, which is exactly what you see in MBB salaries globally, because the firms benchmark each other every year. The post-MBA step is where the spread opens up, and a single strong bonus year can move a Sydney consultant by A$40,000.

Bonus structure differs by firm too. Bain associate consultants in Australia report a profit-sharing component of roughly A$12,000 to A$15,000 on top of base and bonus, which is a Bain-specific feature that does not appear in McKinsey or BCG submissions. That extra line is easy to miss if you compare base salaries alone.

What Do Big 4 Consulting Firms Pay in Australia?

Big 4 consultants in Australia earn A$64,000 to A$80,000 as consultants, A$83,000 to A$100,000 as senior consultants, and A$110,000 to A$135,000 as managers. Senior managers reach A$148,000 to A$176,000 and directors go past A$180,000. The gap against the top strategy firms is modest at graduate level and very large by the post-MBA years.

The graduate and senior figures come from Glassdoor and Levels.fyi submissions filed between September 2025 and July 2026. The consultant, manager, and director rows for Deloitte, KPMG, and EY draw on published Australian salary benchmarking that reflects 2022 pay levels, so treat those as a conservative floor rather than a current quote. PwC is the exception, because it disclosed its own Australian pay bands to staff.

Those disclosed PwC consulting bands ran from A$61,300 to A$108,200 for associates, A$77,600 to A$141,800 for senior associates, A$104,700 to A$185,200 for managers, and A$184,800 to A$362,588 for directors. The width of each band is the real story. Two managers at the same firm, in the same office, with the same title can be A$80,000 apart, which is why Big 4 consulting salary averages are close to useless for an individual offer.

What Do Accenture and Tier 2 Firms Pay in Australia?

Accenture consultants in Sydney report a median base of A$100,000 and total pay of A$90,000 to A$111,000, according to Glassdoor data from 2025. Accenture strategy consultants in Australia sit higher at A$116,000 to A$128,000 in total pay. Australian offices of the pure-play strategy firms pay more again.

Oliver Wyman is the clearest example in the Australian market, and its ladder shows how steep the senior climb gets. Glassdoor submissions from its Australian offices put consultants at A$99,000 to A$113,000, senior consultants at A$114,000 to A$136,000, and engagement managers at A$255,000 to A$280,000. Principals reach A$275,000 to A$409,000 and partners run A$500,000 to A$821,000.

Australian-owned firms occupy a genuine middle tier that global comparisons miss entirely. Nous Group in Melbourne reports graduate consultants at A$71,000 to A$84,000, consultants at A$74,000 to A$90,000, senior consultants at A$96,000 to A$112,000, and principals at A$256,000 to A$365,000. That entry number sits below the Big 4 while the principal number rivals a Big 4 director, which is a pattern you see across the strong local firms.

If you are choosing between a Big 4 offer and a local strategy firm, the decision is rarely about year one. It is about how quickly the ladder steepens, and at good tier 2 consulting firms it steepens sooner because teams are smaller and client ownership arrives earlier.

How Do Consulting Salaries Progress by Level in Australia?

Australian consulting pay roughly doubles between the analyst and post-MBA levels, then doubles again by partner. The single steepest step is from project leader or engagement manager into the partner track, where reported pay moves from around A$255,000 to well past A$400,000. Below is the typical shape at a top strategy firm in Australia.

  1. Analyst or associate consultant: A$95,000 to A$115,000 total, zero to three years of experience

  2. Senior analyst or senior associate consultant: A$133,000 to A$156,000 total, two to four years

  3. Consultant or associate (post-MBA entry): A$170,000 to A$230,000 total, four to six years

  4. Project leader or engagement manager: A$255,000 to A$280,000 total, six to nine years

  5. Principal or associate partner: A$275,000 to A$414,000 total, eight to twelve years

  6. Partner: A$500,000 and above, with the top of the reported Australian range at A$821,000

The Big 4 ladder moves in smaller steps over a longer runway. A graduate reaching A$150,000 typically takes seven to nine years through the senior manager grade, against four to six years at a strategy firm. That difference in slope, not the starting number, is what separates the two consulting career paths in cash terms over a decade.

Partner pay in Australia deserves one caveat. Reported partner figures are base and bonus only, and equity partners at every firm receive a share of firm profits that is not captured in any public dataset. The published consulting partner salary ranges are therefore floors.

Which Australian City Pays Consultants the Most?

Sydney posts the highest market-wide consulting average in Australia at about A$115,000, ahead of Canberra at A$105,000 and Perth at roughly A$92,000, based on SEEK and Indeed data from 2026. Inside a single firm, though, Sydney and Melbourne pay almost the same. The market gap comes from what work sits in each city, not from different pay bands.

A$86,000 to A$117,000

KPMG Senior Consultant

A$83,000 to A$100,000

A$80,000 to A$97,000

Read those rows carefully and the Sydney premium mostly disappears. Bain associate consultants in Melbourne actually report slightly higher total pay than their Sydney counterparts. Sydney looks richer in market-wide data because it holds more of the financial services and private equity work that pays at the top of every band.

Canberra is the genuine exception, and it moves in the opposite direction from what people expect. Public sector advisory work concentrates there, which lifts the local average above Perth and Adelaide while capping the ceiling, because government panel rates set the price. Brisbane and Perth carry resources and infrastructure work that pays well at manager level and above but thinly at graduate level.

One practical consequence: do not accept a lower number to move to Melbourne, and do not expect a raise to move to Sydney. Firms in Australia run national bands with only minor adjustments, which is different from the United States and from how consulting recruiting in Australia is often described.

How Do Australian Consulting Salaries Compare to the United States?

Australian consulting pay converts to roughly 70% of the American figure at current exchange rates. An A$110,000 Australian analyst package converts to about US$78,900 at the Reserve Bank of Australia rate of 0.7170 on 1 September 2026, against a US MBB base of roughly US$112,000. At the post-MBA level the gap in absolute dollars is far larger.

US$112,000

Post-MBA entry

A$200,000

US$143,400

US$192,000

The raw conversion overstates the gap. Australian packages carry 12% superannuation on top, four weeks of statutory annual leave, and no health insurance premium, since Medicare covers the baseline. Add those back and an Australian analyst package is worth closer to 80% of the American one in practice.

The cost side works the other way at senior levels. Australia's top marginal rate of 45% starts at A$190,000 of taxable income, which is far lower than the American threshold, so a partner keeps a smaller share of each additional dollar. If you are weighing an Australian offer against a US one, run the comparison on after-tax cash rather than on the headline, and remember that the MBA consulting salaries quoted in American recruiting materials have no Australian equivalent.

How Much of an Australian Consulting Salary Do You Keep After Tax?

An Australian consultant on A$110,000 keeps about A$84,300 after income tax and the Medicare levy. At A$150,000 you keep roughly A$110,400, and at A$300,000 you keep about A$193,100. The 2026-27 resident rates run at 15% from A$18,201, 30% from A$45,001, 37% from A$135,001, and 45% above A$190,000, plus a 2% Medicare levy.

Two adjustments will change your own number. Singles above the Medicare levy surcharge threshold, which was A$101,000 in the 2025-26 year, pay an extra 1% to 1.5% unless they hold private hospital cover. That is why most consultants take out a basic policy once they pass senior consultant.

Graduates carrying a student loan repay it through the tax system as well, which is a real deduction on top of the table above. Budget for it in your first two years, because the repayment rate rises with income and catches people out in the year they get promoted.

More relief is coming. The Australian Taxation Office confirms the lowest bracket fell from 16% to 15% on 1 July 2026 and drops again to 14% on 1 July 2027. The benefit is a flat dollar amount across incomes, so it matters far more to a graduate than to a partner.

How Do You Negotiate a Higher Consulting Salary in Australia?

You can negotiate at experienced-hire and lateral levels, but almost never in a graduate intake. Firms run graduate programs on fixed bands so every person in the cohort starts on the same number. Here is where the room actually sits.

Tip #1: Confirm whether the number includes superannuation before anything else

This is the highest-value question you will ask, and it costs you nothing. On a A$120,000 quote, base plus super and package inclusive of super differ by about A$12,900 in cash.

Tip #2: Get a second offer before you talk numbers

A competing offer from a peer firm is the only thing that reliably moves an Australian band, because recruiters can escalate a retention case internally with evidence. Interview at two or three firms in the same window rather than sequentially. If you want to learn case interviews quickly, my case interview course walks you through proven strategies in as little as 7 days.

Tip #3: Negotiate your level, not your number

Bands are fixed but level placement is a judgment call, and moving from consultant to senior consultant is worth A$20,000 or more at every Big 4 firm. Make the case on scope of work rather than years served. An experienced hire who has run client-facing delivery should push hard here.

Tip #4: Ask for a sign-on payment when the band will not move

Sign-on payments sit outside the band and are far easier for a partner to approve than a base increase. They are especially winnable if you are forfeiting a bonus by leaving your current employer mid-cycle. Quantify the forfeited amount and ask for that figure.

Tip #5: Time your start date around the review cycle

Most Australian firms review pay in line with the financial year that ends on 30 June, and joiners who start shortly before a review often wait a full extra cycle for their first increase. Ask when the review lands and whether you will be eligible. A start date shifted by four weeks can be worth a full year of increase.

The honest summary is that a consulting salary in Australia is driven far more by which firm and which level you land than by anything you say in a negotiation call. Focus your energy on winning the strongest offer you can at the highest level you can justify, then confirm the superannuation structure in writing before you sign.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a consultant earn in Australia?

A consultant in Australia earns roughly A$87,000 to A$100,000 per year on average across all firms and industries. Indeed reported an average of A$87,371 in April 2026, while Glassdoor put average total pay for consulting roles at A$100,000 in May 2026. Strategy consultants at McKinsey, BCG, and Bain sit well above that, with analysts reporting A$100,000 to A$115,000 in total pay.

Does an Australian consulting salary include superannuation?

Sometimes, and you have to ask. Australian employers quote pay either as base plus superannuation or as a total package inclusive of superannuation. The superannuation guarantee rate has been 12% of qualifying earnings since 1 July 2025, so on a quoted figure of A$120,000 the difference between the two structures is about A$12,900 in cash.

Do MBB firms pay more than the Big 4 in Australia?

Yes, and the gap widens with seniority. At entry level, a McKinsey business analyst in Sydney reports A$96,000 to A$115,000 in base pay against A$64,000 to A$80,000 for a PwC consultant, according to Glassdoor data from 2026. By the post-MBA level the gap is far larger, with BCG consultants in Sydney reporting total pay of A$180,000 to A$230,000.

Why do Australian consultants earn less than American consultants?

Australian offices pay to the local market rather than to a global band, and the exchange rate makes the gap look wider than it is. At the Reserve Bank of Australia rate of 0.7170 on 1 September 2026, an A$110,000 Australian analyst package converts to roughly US$78,900 against a US MBB base of about US$112,000. Lower headline pay is partly offset by 12% superannuation, universal healthcare, and four weeks of statutory annual leave.

What is the starting salary for a graduate consultant in Australia?

Graduate consultants in Australia start at about A$65,000 to A$70,000 in total pay at Big 4 firms. Glassdoor reported a median of A$65,000 at Deloitte, A$67,000 at KPMG, and A$68,000 at EY as of September 2025. Graduates who join McKinsey, BCG, or Bain start far higher, at roughly A$95,000 to A$110,000 in total first-year pay.

Can you negotiate a consulting salary in Australia?

You can negotiate at experienced-hire and lateral levels, but almost never in a graduate or analyst intake. Firms run graduate programs on fixed bands so that every person in the cohort starts on the same number. Experienced hires have real room, especially on level placement, start date, and signing payments.
