Key Takeaways

Eden McCallum screens Analyst Programme candidates through a numerical test and two interview rounds that together contain four full business case interviews plus two motivational interviews.

  • Round 1 pairs one motivational interview with two case interviews, and Round 2 adds two more cases plus a fit interview

  • Four cases matches the case volume of a typical MBB process, so prepare to an MBB standard

  • Only 1 in 10 applicants to the independent consultant pool are selected, and that route needs 2 years of top firm experience

  • Analysts report base pay of £44,000 to £50,000, rising to £61,000 to £76,000 at Associate Consultant

  • The London graduate cycle closes in January, with tests in February, interviews in March, and a September start

What Is the Eden McCallum Interview Process?

The Eden McCallum interview process has six stages: a CV and motivation review, an online numerical test, Interview Round 1 with one motivational interview and two case interviews, Interview Round 2 with two case interviews and one fit interview, an offer, and a two-week induction in London each September.

  1. CV and motivation: the firm reviews academics alongside leadership, drive, and teamwork evidence, then invites a shortlist to test

  2. Numerical test: an online assessment of numerical capability and analytical skill

  3. Interview Round 1: a motivational interview and two business case interviews with analysts, associate consultants, Talent Team managers, or Client Partners

  4. Interview Round 2: two more business case interviews with Talent Team managers and Client Partners, plus a motivational interview with a senior member of the Analyst Programme

  5. Offer: successful Round 2 candidates receive an offer

  6. Induction: a two-week training programme in London that the whole cohort attends together each September

Add those interviews up and you get six conversations, four of which are full case interviews. That is the same case volume most candidates face at McKinsey, BCG, or Bain. Candidates who write Eden McCallum off as an easier boutique target are the ones who get caught out in Round 2.

Glassdoor respondents put the average time from application to decision at 26 days across 13 submitted interviews, with 75% of them applying online rather than through a referral. Analyst Programme candidates should plan for longer, since the London graduate cycle stretches from a January deadline to March final rounds. One London analyst reported a five-week process from application to offer.

Who Can Apply to Eden McCallum?

Eden McCallum hires through three separate routes, and each has its own process. Picking the wrong one is the most common mistake I see with this firm, because the graduate programme and the consultant pool share almost nothing beyond the name on the door.

Route

Who it is for

Selection process

Analyst Programme

Recent bachelor's or master's graduates, excluding MBAs, with no more than about 2 years of work experience

Numerical test, then 2 rounds containing 4 case interviews and 2 motivational interviews

Independent consultant pool

Experienced consultants with a minimum of 2 years at a top firm, preferably within the last 5 to 10 years

Online application, video or in-person interview, profile form, then partner references

In-house team roles

Senior hires into Client Partner, Associate Partner, Talent Team, and operations roles

Direct application to advertised openings, with interviews shaped around the specific role

The Analyst Programme runs out of London and Amsterdam. Amsterdam requires a master's degree and fluency in both Dutch and English, which rules out a large share of the applicants who would otherwise qualify in London.

Founded in 2000 by two former McKinsey consultants, Liann Eden and Dena McCallum, the firm built a model where every project runs on hybrid teams of independent consultants, in-house partners, and in-house analysts. That structure is why it sits in an odd spot among boutique consulting firms. The client roster and the case bar look like a major strategy house, while the headcount looks like a small business.

What Is the Eden McCallum Numerical Test?

The Eden McCallum numerical test is an online assessment that measures numerical capability and analytical skill, and it sits between the CV screen and Interview Round 1. The firm points candidates toward standard numerical reasoning practice tests, including SHL example questions, on its published application process page.

Expect the format most UK graduate schemes use: tables and charts, a question about the data, and a tight clock. Candidates describe it as a normal numerical reasoning test rather than anything exotic. One Amsterdam analyst called it a standard arithmetic test.

The test is a filter, not a differentiator. Nobody gets an offer because of a strong score, but plenty of strong case candidates never reach an interview because they treated the test as a formality. Sharpening your case interview math in the weeks before the test pays off twice, since the same speed carries into the four cases waiting on the other side.

What Are Eden McCallum Case Interviews Like?

Eden McCallum case interviews are standard candidate-led strategy cases lasting roughly 30 minutes each, with two in Round 1 and two in Round 2. Interviewers include analysts, associate consultants, Talent Team managers, and Client Partners, so the difficulty climbs noticeably between rounds.

Reported case topics track the firm's actual project mix. One candidate got a growth strategy case, which is unsurprising given that growth, digital, and sustainability strategy sit at the center of the firm's service line. Another was asked to size the market for a new hair dye brand in an industrial city.

That second one is a useful signal. A market sizing question set in an unfamiliar country tells you the firm cares about how you build assumptions from nothing, not whether you happen to know a market. Say your assumptions out loud, sanity-check each one, and move.

The firm publishes two of its own example interview cases on the application process page, and skipping them is a mistake. Almost no candidate reads them, which means the ones who do walk in already calibrated to the firm's preferred level of detail and pace.

Because projects here typically run three to four months with teams of two to five people, interviewers weigh practicality heavily. A structure that is technically MECE but useless to a client lands badly. Build case interview frameworks from the specific problem in front of you rather than reaching for a memorized template.

Four cases is a lot of surface area to defend. If you want to compress your prep, my case interview course covers every case type you could face here in as little as 7 days.

What Does the Eden McCallum Motivational Interview Cover?

The motivational interview tests why you want consulting, why you want this firm specifically, and whether your track record shows leadership, drive, and teamwork. You face it twice: once in Round 1 and once in Round 2 with a senior member of the Analyst Programme.

Questions candidates report being asked include the following.

  • Why do you want to get into consulting?

  • Why are you suitable for this role?

  • How much do you know about our company?

  • Tell me about a time when you led a team through a difficult situation

  • Walk me through your CV

The third question is the one that separates candidates here. At most firms, a generic answer about prestige and steep learning curves survives. At Eden McCallum it does not, because the interviewer knows their model is unusual and wants to hear that you understand it.

A strong answer names the hybrid team structure and explains what it means for you as an analyst. You will work alongside independent consultants who often have eight or more years of MBB experience, on teams small enough that you own real workstreams from week one. Say that, and you have separated yourself from most of the room.

Your answer to why consulting needs to connect to that structure rather than sit beside it. Vague enthusiasm about problem solving reads the same from every candidate. A specific link between what you want to learn and how this firm staffs projects does not.

Behavioral answers should follow a clear situation, action, result shape. If you want a system for building those stories, my fit interview course covers 98% of the questions you will face in a consulting fit interview.

How Do You Join the Eden McCallum Independent Consultant Pool?

The independent consultant route runs through a three-step process: an online application with a CV, a video or in-person interview with a Talent Team member or Client Partner alongside an online profile form, then telephone references from former colleagues. Eden McCallum states that 1 in 10 applicants are selected into a pool of more than 2,500 consultants.

The entry bar is specific. You need a minimum of two years at a top management consulting firm, predominantly McKinsey, Bain, or BCG, and preferably within the last five to ten years. About 90% of the pool has both consulting and industry experience, which is the profile the firm sells to clients.

Notice what is missing from that process: there is no case interview. The screen is your record and your references, not a live problem solving test. That makes this a different kind of preparation problem from the Analyst Programme, and closer to how consulting experienced hire processes work at firms that already trust your training.

The profile form matters more than most applicants realize. It records the recency and depth of your experience by sector and function, and it is what the staffing team searches when a live project appears. A thin profile means a quiet phone.

What Is the Eden McCallum Recruiting Timeline?

The London Analyst Programme cycle runs on a fixed graduate calendar: applications close in mid-January, online tests follow in early February, first round interviews run in early March, final rounds follow roughly two weeks later, and successful candidates start in September. The 2026 London intake closed applications in January and the firm has since confirmed that cycle is shut.

Amsterdam operates on a different rhythm with autumn deadlines and start dates spread across January to March. If you are targeting both offices, treat them as two separate applications with two separate calendars.

The window between the January deadline and the March interviews is short. Six to eight weeks is enough to get case-ready from a standing start only if you begin the day you submit, which is why the strongest candidates I have coached start casing before the deadline rather than after it.

How Much Does Eden McCallum Pay?

Eden McCallum analysts report base salaries of £44,000 to £50,000, and Associate Consultants report £61,000 to £76,000. The table below shows reported base pay by level, along with how many people submitted each figure so you can weigh the reliability yourself.

Progression is structured. Strong performers move from Analyst to Associate Consultant after roughly two years, with a further step to Senior Consultant two years after that. Recent leavers have gone on to other top-tier consultancies, corporate strategy teams, start-ups, and private equity, which is a healthy set of consulting exit opportunities for a firm of this size.

How Hard Is the Eden McCallum Interview?

Eden McCallum interviews are difficult, and Glassdoor respondents rate them as such. The clearest hard number the firm publishes is on the consultant side: 1 in 10 applicants to the independent consultant pool make it through.

For the Analyst Programme, the difficulty comes from volume rather than exotic formats. Four separate case interviews means four separate chances to fall apart, and there is no single strong performance that rescues a weak one. Small intakes make the bar unforgiving in a way that large graduate schemes are not.

The good news is that the case style is conventional. The published process contains no digital assessment and no gamified test, just a numerical test followed by standard interviews. If you can handle a candidate-led strategy case, you can handle these.

The bad news is that your interviewers are unusually experienced. In-house partners here are largely ex-MBB, and Client Partners sit in on both rounds, so you are being assessed by people who have run these conversations for years and can tell a rehearsed structure from a real one within thirty seconds.

How Do You Prepare for the Eden McCallum Interview?

There are five things that matter most in the six to eight weeks between the application deadline and final round interviews.

Tip #1: Prepare to an MBB standard, not a boutique standard

Four full cases is the same load McKinsey, BCG, and Bain put candidates through. Every candidate I have seen fail here underestimated the case bar because the firm is small. Set your preparation target at the level you would set for a Bain final round.

Tip #2: Work through the firm's own example cases first

Eden McCallum publishes two example interview cases on its application process page, which is an unusually generous thing for a firm to do. Those cases show you the level of quantitative detail and the type of business problem the interviewers have in mind. Start there before you touch generic case interview examples.

Tip #3: Build a real point of view on the hybrid team model

The motivational interviewers will probe how much you actually know about the firm. Read the analyst perspectives and consultant perspectives pages, then write down two specific things about working alongside independent consultants that appeal to you. Generic answers about culture and people do not survive contact with a Client Partner.

Tip #4: Drill mental math before the test, not after

The numerical test comes before any interview, so weak arithmetic ends your candidacy before anyone hears your structure. Twenty minutes a day of percentage, ratio, and growth rate drills for two weeks is enough. That same speed then carries you through four cases without burning time you need for insight.

Tip #5: Practice with someone who will interrupt you

Small project teams mean these interviewers care whether you take input well. In my experience at Bain, the candidates who struggled most were the ones who treated a challenge to their structure as an attack rather than data. Have your practice partner push back mid-case and rehearse absorbing it without losing your thread.

If you want feedback from someone who has sat on the other side of the table, my interview coaching gets you there faster than self-study alone.

The Eden McCallum interview rewards candidates who prepare seriously for four conventional cases and can explain, in their own words, why a hybrid team model appeals to them. Start casing the day you submit your application rather than the day you get the test invitation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the Eden McCallum interview process take?

Glassdoor candidates report an average of 26 days from application to decision across 13 submitted Eden McCallum interviews. Analyst Programme candidates in the London graduate cycle experience a longer calendar, because the application deadline sits in January and final round interviews run in March. One London analyst reported a five-week process from application to offer.

Does Eden McCallum use case interviews?

Yes. Eden McCallum runs four business case interviews across its two Analyst Programme interview rounds, two in each round. The firm publishes two of its own example interview cases on its application process page. Candidates report standard strategy cases such as growth strategy problems and market sizing questions.

Is Eden McCallum hard to get into?

Yes. Eden McCallum states that 1 in 10 applicants to its independent consultant pool are selected, and that pool requires a minimum of 2 years at a top consulting firm. The Analyst Programme is also selective, with Glassdoor respondents rating interview difficulty as difficult. The four case interview format means weak case performance in any single interview can end the process.

Can MBA students apply to Eden McCallum?

Not through the Analyst Programme. Eden McCallum explicitly excludes MBA holders from that programme because of how the training is structured. MBA graduates with at least 2 years of experience at a top consulting firm can apply to the independent consultant pool instead, and post-MBA hires are also considered for in-house partner roles.

What questions does Eden McCallum ask in interviews?

Candidates report motivational questions such as why do you want to get into consulting, why are you suitable for this role, and how much do you know about our company. Case questions reported include a growth strategy case and a market sizing question on estimating demand for a new hair dye brand in an industrial city. Behavioral prompts follow a standard tell me about a time format.

Does Eden McCallum hire experienced consultants?

Yes, but mostly as independent consultants rather than salaried employees. Eden McCallum maintains a pool of more than 2,500 independent consultants who choose their own projects. Applicants need at least 2 years at a top consulting firm, preferably within the last 5 to 10 years, and 90% of the pool has both consulting and industry experience.
