Key Takeaways

The Hackett Group runs a recruiter screen, one or two behavioral interviews, and a final case or presentation round, and most candidates finish the whole process in about a month.

  • Expect 3 to 4 rounds, with the case or presentation saved for last

  • Glassdoor scores interview difficulty at 2.8 out of 5, easier than MBB but harder than a typical corporate process

  • Cases skew toward cost reduction, process efficiency, and benchmarking rather than market entry

  • 34% of candidates got their interview through a recruiter reaching out, so an optimized profile matters more here than at campus-heavy firms

  • Glassdoor puts Consultant total pay at $119,000 to $169,000 and Senior Consultant at $147,000 to $198,000

  • The firm is mid-transition to an AI platform delivery model, and interviewers are probing for candidates who are comfortable with that shift

What Is the Hackett Group Interview Process?

The Hackett Group interview process runs three to four rounds over roughly four weeks. It opens with a recruiter phone or video screen, moves to one or two behavioral interviews with managers and directors, and closes with a case study, case presentation, or panel round. Technical and implementation roles swap the business case for a domain skills interview.

The firm describes this sequence on its own careers page. Recruiting reaches out to set up an initial virtual or phone interview, then schedules additional virtual or phone conversations, then brings you in for a series of in-person or virtual interviews.

Here is what each stage looks like in practice.

  1. Recruiter screen: a conversational call covering your background, your reasons for looking, compensation expectations, and location or travel flexibility

  2. Behavioral interview: one or two conversations with a hiring manager, senior manager, or director, focused on your project history and how you work with clients

  3. Case study or presentation: a business problem you solve live, an Excel exercise, or a deck you prepare in advance and present to a group

  4. Panel and final conversations: a round-robin with practice leaders and cross-functional colleagues, sometimes including a principal or practice director

The firm states in its own materials that these conversations focus on subject matter expertise, project management experience, client readiness, your ability to lead inside the firm and in the market, and how The Hackett Group fits into your career plan. That last item is not filler. Candidates who cannot explain why this firm specifically get filtered out at the panel stage.

What Does the Hackett Group Do and Who Does It Hire?

The Hackett Group is a publicly traded strategy and operations consultancy headquartered in Miami and founded in 1991. It trades on the Nasdaq under the ticker HCKT and reported total revenue of $69.3 million in the second quarter of 2026, down from $78.9 million in the same quarter of 2025.

The firm's core asset is its benchmarking database. According to the company's second quarter 2026 results, its performance benchmarks cover 97% of the Dow Jones Industrials, 90% of the Fortune 100, 68% of the DAX 40, and 53% of the FTSE 100.

That database shapes the work and therefore the interview. Hackett consultants compare a client's finance, procurement, human resources, information technology, or supply chain function against peer performance data, then design and implement the changes that close the gap.

Hiring splits across two broad tracks. The first is functional transformation consulting in finance, procurement, global business services, human resources, and supply chain. The second is technology implementation for Oracle, SAP, OneStream, and Coupa platforms.

The consulting ladder follows a standard shape. Glassdoor's reported job titles trace a path from Associate Consultant to Consultant, Senior Consultant, Manager or Consulting Manager, Senior Manager, Principal, Director, and Senior Director.

One detail candidates miss: this is not a New York and Boston firm. Glassdoor salary submissions cluster in Hyderabad with 217 reports, then Chicago with 158, Atlanta with 127, London with 97, New York with 85, and Miami with 83.

How Hard Is the Hackett Group Interview to Pass?

Glassdoor rates the interview difficulty at 2.8 out of 5, with 66.2% of candidates describing the experience as positive. That places it below MBB and above a routine corporate hiring process. The behavioral rounds are genuinely conversational, and the case round is where consulting candidates get cut.

Timing varies a lot by role. Across all 105 reports on Glassdoor's interview page, the average is 29 days, but Senior Consultant candidates average about 26 days while Consultant candidates average closer to 44.

The stage mix tells you where to put your preparation time. Of the reported interview stages, phone interviews appear in 24% of processes, one-on-one interviews in 23%, presentations in 12%, and skills tests in 11%.

How candidates got in the door is the more useful number:

  • Recruiter outreach: 34% of respondents, the single largest channel

  • Applied online: 21%, which is unusually high for a consulting firm

  • Employee referral: 17%

  • Campus recruiting: 12%

Read that carefully. At MBB, a cold online application is close to a dead end. At Hackett, more than one in five interviewed candidates came through the online portal, which means a well-targeted consulting resume loaded with the functional keywords in the job posting does real work here.

The other implication is that recruiters source heavily from LinkedIn. Make sure your headline names the function you want to consult in, whether that is finance transformation, procurement, or Oracle Cloud implementation.

What Behavioral Questions Does the Hackett Group Ask?

Hackett behavioral interviews are experience-driven rather than trait-driven. Interviewers walk through your actual projects and ask about your role, your responsibilities, and how you dealt with clients. Candidates consistently report that interviewers push for personal, specific detail rather than rehearsed answers.

These are questions candidates have reported being asked:

  • Tell me about yourself and walk me through your resume

  • Why do you want to work here

  • Tell me about a time you made a mistake

  • What is your greatest strength

  • What is an area of improvement for you

  • Tell me three words by which I should remember you

  • Walk me through a recent project: your role, your duties, and your client interaction

Structure every answer with the STAR method so the interviewer can follow the situation, the task, your specific actions, and the measurable result. Keep each story to about ninety seconds. Then stop talking and let them probe.

Here is an example for the mistake question, which appears repeatedly in candidate reports.

Q: Tell me about a time you made a mistake.

A: On a procurement diagnostic, I built the savings model off the client's contract database without reconciling it to accounts payable. Two weeks in, I found that roughly 15% of spend sat outside those contracts, which meant my baseline was wrong and my savings estimate was overstated.

I flagged it to my manager the same day, rebuilt the model against payment data, and we presented the corrected number to the client with an explanation. The revised estimate held up through implementation, and I now reconcile every model to two independent data sources before anyone sees a number.

Notice what that answer does. It owns the error without drama, quantifies the impact, and ends with a changed behavior rather than a vague lesson. Having coached hundreds of candidates one on one, the failure story is the single answer most people get wrong, usually by choosing a mistake so trivial that it reads as evasion.

Preparing for the whole behavioral round is fast if you work from a question bank. My fit interview course covers 98% of consulting fit interview questions in a few hours.

Sales-facing and business development roles get a different set. Candidates in those roles report questions about prior sales experience and the specific targets they were held to, so bring quota numbers and attainment percentages if you are interviewing for a director or sales role.

What Is the Hackett Group Case Interview Like?

The Hackett Group case round takes one of three forms: a live verbal case, an Excel-based analytical exercise, or a case presentation you prepare in advance and deliver to a panel. One Atlanta candidate reported two behavioral interviews followed by a two-hour case as the final stage. Another described receiving a small business case a couple of days before the panel and presenting it to a group of managers including a practice director.

The content skews toward the firm's actual work. Expect cost reduction, process efficiency, shared services design, procurement savings, and benchmarking a client function against peers. Market entry and new product launch cases are far less likely here than at a pure strategy firm.

That means generic frameworks are a liability. If you open a Hackett cost case with a memorized profitability tree, you will sound like you prepared for a different firm. Build your structure around the client's process, its cost drivers, and the benchmark gap.

Here is an example of the shape these cases take.

Example: A $2 billion manufacturer spends 1.2% of revenue running its finance function. Top-quartile peers spend 0.6%. What is the opportunity and where does it come from?

The arithmetic is straightforward: 1.2% of $2 billion is $24 million, top quartile would be $12 million, so the gap is $12 million a year. The analysis is where you earn the offer. You need to break that $24 million into its components, usually labor, technology, and outsourced services, then identify which processes drive the excess.

A strong candidate splits finance into transactional processes such as accounts payable and accounts receivable, control processes such as the close, and decision support such as planning and analysis. Then they ask which of those has the worst cost per transaction against benchmark. That is exactly how the firm's consultants actually work.

Because these are operational problems, practice with an operations case interview before you practice anything else. Cost per unit, capacity utilization, cycle time, and process step elimination will serve you better than a five forces walkthrough.

Two more things matter. First, your case interview math needs to be clean and out loud, since interviewers are watching how you handle percentages of large revenue bases. Second, if you get an Excel exercise, they are watching your comfort with the tool as much as your answer.

If you want a faster route through case preparation, my case interview course walks you through proven strategies in as little as 7 days.

For the advance-prepared version, treat it like a client deliverable rather than a school assignment. A tight ten-slide deck with an executive summary up front beats thirty slides of analysis, and the discipline is the same one you would apply in a written case interview.

How Do You Answer "Why the Hackett Group?"

Answer this by naming something the firm has that its competitors do not. The benchmarking database is the obvious anchor, because very few consultancies can walk into a client meeting with peer performance data on 90% of the Fortune 100 already in hand.

Three angles work well. The intellectual property angle: you want to give recommendations backed by comparative data rather than opinion. The functional depth angle: you want to become expert in finance or procurement rather than rotating across unrelated industries.

The third is scale. A firm of roughly this size gives you direct exposure to practice leaders far earlier than a global network would.

Ground the answer in your own history. If you have run a close process, sourced a category, or implemented an enterprise system, say so and connect it to the practice you are interviewing for.

Avoid the generic why consulting answer about variety and steep learning curves. Every candidate says it, and at a specialist firm it actively signals that you have not thought about what makes this place different.

What Technical Questions Come Up in Hackett Group Interviews?

Technology implementation candidates get a domain interview instead of a business case, and the questions go deep on the specific platform in the job description. One Hyderabad candidate reported two technical rounds followed by an HR conversation about compensation.

Reported and job-posting-aligned technical territory includes:

  • SAP: object-oriented ABAP, ABAP on HANA, pricing, availability check, credit management, and output management

  • Oracle: Cloud human capital management, payroll configuration, enterprise performance management, and supply chain modules

  • Data and analytics: Power BI dashboards, Azure Databricks, and extract, transform, and load pipeline design

  • Other platforms: OneStream and Coupa, both of which the firm partners on directly

Campus hiring in India adds an online coding round before the interviews, covering data structures, algorithms, and aptitude. Candidates who go through that route report a longer preparation runway than the consulting track requires.

The pattern across all of these is scenario framing. Interviewers rarely ask you to define a term. They describe a client situation and ask what you would configure, which means your answers should reference specific projects you delivered.

How Much Does the Hackett Group Pay?

Compensation sits meaningfully below MBB at the entry levels and closes some of that gap at manager and director levels. The figures below come from Glassdoor's estimated total pay ranges as of August 2026, based on 697 submitted salaries across 145 job titles.

London compensation runs on a separate scale. Glassdoor's 97 London submissions as of June 2026 span roughly £49,000 for a Consultant to £115,000 for a Director.

Levels.fyi paints a similar picture. As of March 2026, it reports a median management consultant package of about $138,000, with one New York Senior Consultant submission showing $130,000 base plus a $7,500 bonus.

Because Glassdoor's bands are wide, do not accept the first number without doing your homework. Knowing how to negotiate a consulting offer is worth more per hour than almost anything else in the process.

How Do You Prepare for the Hackett Group Interview?

Preparation splits into three buckets: your stories, your case mechanics, and your firm knowledge. Most candidates over-invest in the first and under-invest in the other two. The seven tips below fix that.

Tip #1: Build four project stories, not twelve

Pick four projects you can discuss in genuine depth and map them to the themes that keep appearing: a mistake, a conflict, a leadership moment, and a difficult client. Four well-rehearsed stories flex to cover almost any question you get.

Interviewers here push for detail, so know your numbers. Team size, budget, timeline, and the measurable result should all be at your fingertips.

Tip #2: Practice cost and process cases first

Spend your case practice hours on cost reduction, operational efficiency, and benchmarking problems rather than the growth cases that dominate most prep material. Build comfort with cost per transaction, span of control, and full-time equivalent headcount analysis.

Learn the standard case interview frameworks so you can build tailored structures quickly, then practice adapting them to process problems rather than reciting them.

Tip #3: Get genuinely fast in Excel

Candidates report Excel-based case exercises, which is rarer at strategy firms and very common here. Practice building a simple cost model from raw data under a time limit, including pivot tables and lookup functions.

The bar is not modeling elegance. It is whether you can get to a defensible number without freezing when the file is messy.

Tip #4: Learn the firm's benchmarking vocabulary

Read two or three of the firm's published research pieces before your panel round and be ready to reference one. Terms like Digital World Class performance and process cost benchmarking come up constantly in the work.

This is the cheapest credibility you can buy. Almost no candidate does it, and it lands immediately with practice leaders.

Tip #5: Treat an advance case like a client deliverable

If you are sent material ahead of the panel, lead your deck with a recommendation, not a table of contents. Put the answer on slide one and use the remaining slides to defend it.

Rehearse it out loud at least twice against a timer. Candidates who read their own slides in a panel setting rarely advance.

Tip #6: Ask about the shift to AI-enabled delivery

The firm is openly mid-transition from a traditional consulting model to a platform-led delivery model built around its own AI tools, and leadership has said it is realigning headcount to match the productivity gains. Interviewers know this and are assessing whether you are energized or threatened by it.

Bringing it up shows you read the earnings materials rather than the careers page. Pair it with one of the sharper questions to ask in a consulting interview so your closing minutes work for you.

Tip #7: Follow up after every single round

Multiple candidates report going quiet between rounds and having to chase recruiters for updates. A short, specific note after each conversation keeps you visible without being pushy.

Send a consulting interview thank you email within 24 hours that references one concrete thing you discussed.

If you want direct feedback before the real thing, my interview coaching puts you in front of a former Bain interviewer for live practice.

The Hackett Group interview rewards candidates who prepare for the firm they are actually interviewing with rather than for consulting in general. If you do one thing this week, build a cost reduction case around a benchmark gap and solve it out loud until the structure feels automatic.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the Hackett Group interview process take?

Glassdoor's 105 candidate reports put the average at 29 days from first contact to offer. Senior Consultant candidates report the fastest path at roughly 26 days, while Consultant candidates report an average closer to 44 days. Plan for four to six weeks and expect gaps between rounds while panel schedules get coordinated.

Does the Hackett Group ask case interview questions?

Yes. Consulting candidates report a case study or case presentation as the final stage, and one recent Atlanta candidate described a two-hour case round after two behavioral interviews. Some candidates receive the case a few days in advance and present it to a panel. Others get an Excel-based exercise instead of a verbal case.

How many interview rounds does the Hackett Group have?

Most candidates go through three to four rounds. The firm's careers page describes a recruiter phone or virtual screen, additional virtual interviews, and then a series of in-person or virtual conversations. Senior and experienced hire candidates sometimes report five or more conversations because more practice leaders get involved.

Is the Hackett Group hard to get a job at?

Glassdoor rates the interview difficulty at 2.8 out of 5, which sits below MBB but above a standard corporate hiring process. The behavioral rounds are conversational and forgiving. The case or presentation round is where most consulting candidates get cut, because it tests structured problem solving under time pressure.

Does the Hackett Group hire undergraduates and interns?

Yes. The firm runs campus recruiting and posts internship roles, including transformation internships based in Miami. Roughly 12% of Glassdoor respondents said they got their interview through campus recruiting, and Intern is one of the most commonly reported interview titles on the platform.

What should you ask at the end of a Hackett Group interview?

Ask about the firm's shift toward AI-enabled delivery and what it changes about the consultant role day to day. Ask how staffing works across functional practices and technology practices. Avoid questions answered on the first page of the careers site, since those signal that you did not prepare.
