The PwC interview process runs through six stages: an online application, an online assessment, a recorded video interview, one or two live behavioral interviews, a case interview for Advisory and Deals candidates, and a final conversation with a partner or director. This guide covers what happens at every stage, how long each one takes, the questions PwC actually asks, and how to prepare so you pass each round on the first attempt.

Key Takeaways
PwC screens candidates through six stages that combine automated testing with live interviews, and the whole thing takes an average of 28 days from application to offer.
- Six stages: application, online assessment, recorded video interview, behavioral interviews, case interview, and partner interview
- Audit, Tax, and Digital Assurance and Transparency candidates get two behavioral interviews back-to-back and no case
- Advisory and Deals candidates add a case interview that PwC says typically runs 30 to 45 minutes
- The online assessment arrives by email within hours of applying, and your application is not complete until you finish it
- Every live round scores you against The PwC Professional, the firm's two-part behavior framework
- Generative AI is allowed while you prepare but banned during the assessment and the interviews
What Is the PwC Interview Process?
The PwC interview process is a six-stage assessment that starts with an online application and an automated test, moves through a recorded video interview and one or two live behavioral interviews, adds a case interview for Advisory and Deals candidates, and ends with a partner or director interview. Most candidates complete it in about four weeks.
Here is what each stage looks like in practice.

Not every candidate sees all six. PwC confirms on its entry level recruiting page that Audit, Tax, and Digital Assurance and Transparency candidates complete two behavioral interviews back-to-back, live and virtually, with no case.
PwC is one of the largest employers you can apply to. The firm reported gross revenues of US$56.9 billion for the year ending June 30, 2025 and a network of 364,000 people serving 82% of the Fortune Global 500, according to its 2025 Global Annual Review. That scale is why the early stages are automated: no recruiting team can read every application by hand.
How Long Does the PwC Interview Process Take?
The PwC hiring process takes an average of 28 days from application to decision, based on 11,166 candidate-reported interviews on Glassdoor as of 2026. Timelines vary a lot by role, and the pattern is consistent: the more senior the position, the longer the wait, because partner calendars drive the scheduling.

Two things stretch that 28-day average. Campus recruiting adds weeks because interview dates are fixed by your school's calendar rather than by PwC. Consulting roles also score the lowest positive experience rating in the table at 64%, which usually reflects longer silences between rounds rather than harsher interviewers.
Stage 1: How Does the PwC Application Work?
You apply through PwC's own careers site, not through your university portal. PwC is explicit about this: submitting your resume on a school career website does not count as an application. You upload a resume, select your preferred office from the list attached to that specific job posting, and submit.
A few application rules trip candidates up every cycle:
- Resume format: PwC asks for a PDF and recommends including the word "Resume" in the file name
- Cover letter: not required for US entry-level applications
- Multiple applications: allowed, but PwC treats every application as equal interest and you can only interview for one opportunity at a time
- Rolling recruitment: most roles fill on a rolling basis and locations close as offers are accepted
That last point matters more than anything else at this stage. Applying in week one of a cycle and applying in week six are not the same bet, because your preferred office may already be full by week six. Get your PwC resume finished before the cycle opens rather than after.
If you want a second read on your resume before you submit, my resume review and editing service gives you unlimited revisions with a 24-hour turnaround.
A cover letter is still worth writing for experienced hire roles and for any market where the posting asks for one. Outside the US, several PwC territories require both a CV and a covering letter at the first stage.
The other lever here is people. A referral from a PwC employee puts your application in front of a recruiter faster, and at a firm processing this volume of applications, speed is most of the battle.
Stage 2: What Is the PwC Online Assessment?
PwC requires an online assessment for most entry-level roles, and it arrives by email within a few hours of you submitting your application. Your application is not considered complete until you finish it. Senior associate roles, seasonal and fixed term positions, and specialist roles are exempt.
What you actually get depends on where you apply. PwC US describes its assessment in terms of work attitudes and tendencies rather than aptitude testing. In the UK and much of Europe and Asia, the first stage is a battery of cognitive tests: numerical reasoning, inductive reasoning, and behavior-based questions, per PwC UK's own assessment and selection guidance.
Many territories use a game-based test built with Arctic Shores. PwC Central and Eastern Europe describes it as a set of short games, each taking around three minutes, with the full set finishing in about 15 minutes and a feedback report emailed to you immediately afterward. In the UK the same style of assessment is longer, and preparing for the Career Unlocked version is a genuinely different exercise from preparing for a standard numerical test.
Here is the mistake I see most often. Candidates treat the automated round as a formality, spend all their prep time on interview stories, and then get rejected by a system that never saw those stories. Drill timed numerical and logical questions for a week before you sit the PwC assessment test and you remove the single most common reason strong candidates never reach a human.
PwC also gives you a firm deadline. UK early careers guidance tells candidates they typically have seven days from receiving an invitation to complete each stage, and the invitation email carries the exact date.
Stage 3: What Happens in the PwC Video Interview?
The PwC video interview is a recorded, one-way session where you answer pre-set questions on camera with no interviewer present. You get a short preparation window for each question, usually 30 to 90 seconds, then a fixed recording window of two to three minutes. Most candidates face four to six questions and finish in under 40 minutes.
The questions split into two types. Motivational questions ask why you want PwC and why this service line. Situational questions describe a scenario you might face on a client team and ask how you would handle it.
PwC UK describes the focus plainly: the questions look at how you typically approach your work, drawing on school, university, or prior work experience. That framing is useful, because it tells you the firm wants patterns of behavior, not a single heroic anecdote.
Three habits separate strong recordings from weak ones:
-
Answer the first sentence directly: state your answer, then support it, because a rambling opener burns 40 seconds of a two-minute window
-
Use a repeatable structure: the STAR method keeps you inside the time limit without losing the result
- Look at the lens, not the screen: eye contact on camera reads as confidence to the recruiter reviewing your file days later
Record two practice runs before the real thing. Watching yourself back for 90 seconds will fix more problems than an hour of reading advice.
Stage 4: What Is the PwC Behavioral Interview?
The PwC behavioral interview is a live, usually virtual conversation with a senior associate, manager, or director who scores you against The PwC Professional. Audit, Tax, and Digital Assurance and Transparency candidates get two of these back-to-back in one sitting. Each runs roughly 30 to 45 minutes.
The PwC Professional has two dimensions, and PwC publishes the exact questions behind each one on its careers site:
- Trusted Leadership: do you understand your impact on others, coach and work alongside people, and actively seek ways to grow
- Distinctive Outcomes: do you commit to quality and integrity, apply a business mindset to your work, and collaborate to deliver for clients
That is your preparation checklist, written by the firm. Map two or three stories to each bullet before you interview and you will have an answer ready for almost anything they ask.
PwC also says it looks for these behaviors in academic work, extracurriculars, and volunteering, not just paid jobs. Candidates with thin work histories consistently underuse this, and a well-told story about running a student organization scores exactly the same as one about a summer internship.
Expect at least one motivation question in every round. Having a specific, non-generic answer to why PwC is the difference between sounding interested and sounding like you applied to all four Big Four firms with the same paragraph.
If you want a faster route through the PwC behavioral interview, my fit interview course covers 98% of consulting fit questions in a few hours.
Stage 5: What Is the PwC Case Interview?
PwC states that the majority of its Advisory positions include a case interview, and that it typically runs 30 to 45 minutes as part of a longer interview day. You work through a mock business problem out loud while the interviewer asks follow-ups and challenges your reasoning. PwC is direct that there is no single correct answer.
The firm publishes the five things its interviewers listen for:
- Structured thinking: can you break a complex problem into organized parts
- Comfort with ambiguity: can you move forward when facts are missing
- Communication skills: can you share your thinking clearly and concisely
- Business intuition and basic numeracy: can you reason practically and work through numbers
- Curiosity and coachability: do you ask good questions and respond well to new information
PwC has published two full sample cases on its Advisory case study prep page, which is the single most underused prep resource for this stage. One asks you to advise a global bank holding $300 billion in assets on the risks of a two-year digital transformation. The other asks you to assess whether a $20 billion healthcare provider should acquire a telemedicine company that would add about 2.5% to revenue.
Read both and note what they have in common: neither is a clean profitability case. They are open-ended judgment problems about risk, integration, and trade-offs, which is exactly how PwC's Advisory work is sold to clients.
PwC confirms you will not need firm-specific frameworks or jargon, and that no advanced math is required. You may be asked to estimate figures, so basic market sizing and percentage work should be automatic. Bring a pen and paper, because PwC actively encourages note-taking during the case.
Some markets add a group case interview or a written presentation at an assessment centre. PwC UK runs a virtual immersive assessment centre as the penultimate stage for graduate programs, and its Strategy graduate route finishes with an in-person business assessment that includes case studies with senior leaders.
Candidates targeting Strategy& should expect the hardest cases in the PwC network, closer in difficulty to what MBB firms give. If you want to get case-ready quickly, my case interview course takes you from the basics to confident in as little as 7 days.
Stage 6: What Happens in the PwC Partner Interview?
The final stage is a conversation with a partner or director from the line of service you applied to, and PwC Middle East puts it at roughly 30 minutes. It is shorter and less structured than the rounds before it. Partners are deciding one thing: would I put this person in front of my client next month.
That changes what you should prepare. Rehearsed answers land worse here than anywhere else in the process, because partners have heard every version of them.
Three things move the needle in a partner conversation:
-
A view on their market: read one recent PwC report in your service line and have an opinion on it
-
A clear reason for this line of service: "consulting" is not an answer, "supply chain work in industrial products" is
- Real curiosity: your questions to ask at the end reveal more than your rehearsed answers do
Having sat on the other side of hundreds of these conversations at Bain, I can tell you the deciding factor is rarely technical. It is whether the partner enjoyed the 30 minutes.
How Does the PwC Interview Process Differ by Service Line?
The biggest structural difference is whether your track includes a case interview. Audit, Tax, and Digital Assurance and Transparency roles do not use cases. Advisory, Consulting, Deals, and Strategy& roles almost always do.

PwC UK describes its experienced hire assessment as a two-stage structure: a technical role assessment covering what you do, and a behavioral interview covering how you do it. Candidates coming in as experienced hires also get asked about commercial knowledge and current market developments in their sector.
One more difference worth knowing: PwC's US entry-level process is more compressed than its UK one. US candidates often go application, assessment, then straight to two live interviews. UK graduate candidates add a video interview and a full assessment centre before the final round.
What Are the Most Common PwC Interview Questions?
PwC interview questions cluster into four groups: motivational, behavioral, situational, and technical. Motivational and behavioral questions appear in every round regardless of service line. Technical questions appear only in Audit, Tax, Deals, and technology tracks.
Questions candidates report most often:
- Why PwC, and why this line of service
- Tell me about a time you coached or helped someone develop
- Describe a time you had to deliver quality work under a tight deadline
- Tell me about a time you disagreed with a teammate and how you resolved it
- What business or industry trend are you following right now
- Walk me through a project where the goal changed halfway through
The opener is nearly always the same. Your answer to tell me about yourself sets the tone for the whole conversation, so build a 90-second version and rehearse it until it sounds unrehearsed.
Notice how closely the behavioral questions track the two PwC Professional dimensions. Coaching, growth, and impact on others sit under Trusted Leadership. Quality, commercial awareness, and collaboration sit under Distinctive Outcomes.
How Do You Prepare for the PwC Interview Process?
Preparation should follow the order of the funnel, not the order of your anxiety. Most candidates over-prepare for the interview they are most nervous about and under-prepare for the stage that actually rejects them. Work through these six tips in sequence.
Tip #1: Apply in the first two weeks of the cycle
PwC fills most roles on a rolling basis and closes locations as offers are accepted. An identical application submitted six weeks later competes for a smaller pool of seats in your preferred office.
Tip #2: Clear your calendar the day the assessment arrives
The assessment lands by email within a few hours of applying, and your application stays incomplete until you finish it. Sitting it tired, on a phone, or on a weak connection is an avoidable way to lose a strong application.
Tip #3: Build six stories against the PwC Professional
Write three stories for Trusted Leadership and three for Distinctive Outcomes. Six well-chosen stories will cover every behavioral question PwC asks across the video interview, both live rounds, and the partner conversation.
Tip #4: Practice cases out loud, on a timer, with a partner
PwC explicitly recommends using a timer, taking notes, and speaking your answers aloud. Silent reading builds recognition, not performance, and the case interview scores performance.
Tip #5: Drill percentages and ratios until they are automatic
PwC says no advanced math is required, but you may be asked to estimate market size or interpret simple data. Steady mental math practice keeps you calm at the exact moment most candidates freeze.
Tip #6: Read one PwC report in your service line before the partner round
Partners ask what you are following in the market, and a specific answer sourced from PwC's own research signals genuine interest. It also gives you something real to talk about when the structured questions run out.
What Mistakes Do Candidates Make in the PwC Interview Process?
Four mistakes account for most avoidable rejections. Each one is easy to fix once you know it exists.
- Treating the assessment as a formality: the automated stage rejects more candidates than any interview does
- Giving a generic motivation answer: naming the Big Four brand instead of a specific team or type of work reads as a mass application
- Solving the case silently: PwC scores how you think, so a good answer delivered without narration scores worse than a decent one explained clearly
- Using AI during the interview: PwC permits generative AI while you prepare but bans it during the assessment and interviews
That last one is newer than most candidates realize, and PwC states it plainly in its candidate guidance. The firm also runs periodic checks on candidate conduct across its assessment stages.
Having coached hundreds of candidates through Big Four and MBB processes, the pattern is always the same: the people who get offers are not the ones with the best raw material, they are the ones who prepared for every stage rather than just the one they feared. The PwC interview process rewards that evenly, because each of the six stages is scored independently. Start with the assessment this week, because it is the gate that closes fastest and the one you can improve the most in the least time.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does the PwC interview process take?
PwC hiring takes an average of 28 days from application to offer, based on 11,166 candidate reports on Glassdoor in 2026. Campus candidates recruiting through a university cycle often wait longer because interview dates are set by the school calendar. Experienced hire processes usually run 30 to 40 days because scheduling depends on partner availability.
How many rounds of interviews does PwC have?
Most PwC candidates face two interview rounds after the online assessment and video interview. Audit, Tax, and Digital Assurance and Transparency candidates complete two behavioral interviews back-to-back in a single virtual session. Advisory and Deals candidates add a case interview and usually a final conversation with a partner or director.
Is the PwC interview hard?
Glassdoor users rated PwC interview difficulty at 2.86 out of 5 in 2026, which is moderate for a Big Four firm. The behavioral rounds are approachable if you prepare stories in advance. The hardest part for most candidates is the online assessment, which screens out a large share of applicants before any human reads their resume.
Does PwC ask case interview questions?
PwC states that the majority of its Advisory positions include a case interview. Audit, Tax, and Digital Assurance and Transparency roles do not use cases and rely on behavioral interviews instead. PwC cases typically run 30 to 45 minutes and cover themes such as digital transformation, growth strategy, and acquisitions.
Can you use AI during the PwC interview process?
No. PwC permits responsible use of generative AI while you research roles and prepare your application, but bans it during the assessment and the interviews. PwC states that candidates must provide information that accurately reflects their own skills and qualifications, and it publishes separate guidance for job seekers on where AI use is acceptable.
How soon does PwC get back to you after the final interview?
Most candidates hear back within one to two weeks of the final interview, and campus candidates often hear within a few days because offers are made in batches after each interview day. PwC recruits on a rolling basis for most roles and closes locations as offers are accepted. If you have not heard anything after ten business days, email your recruiter directly.
