Key Takeaways

Chicago is the birthplace of modern management consulting and hosts the second or third largest US office at most major firms, which makes it one of the best markets in the country to start a consulting career.

  • McKinsey, BCG, and Bain all run major Chicago offices, and each treats it as a flagship US location

  • Five consulting firms run their headquarters in Chicago itself, including Kearney, Huron, West Monroe, and Grant Thornton

  • MBB base pay does not change by city, so the same salary buys far more in Chicago than on either coast

  • Booth and Kellogg dominate MBA hiring, while Northwestern, UChicago, Michigan, and Notre Dame lead undergraduate hiring

  • The client mix skews toward manufacturing, healthcare, retail, food, insurance, and private equity rather than tech

Why Is Chicago One of the Best Consulting Markets in the US?

Chicago matters because the industry started here. James O. McKinsey, an accounting professor at the University of Chicago, founded his firm in the city in 1926 and hired Andrew Thomas Kearney as his first partner in 1929. When McKinsey died in 1937, the Chicago office split off under Kearney and became the firm we now know as Kearney.

That means two of the world's most recognizable consultancies trace their origin to the same Chicago office. A century later, both still recruit there. No other US city can claim that.

There are four reasons the market stayed strong.

  1. Client density: the Chicago metro area holds 30 Fortune 500 headquarters in the 2026 Fortune 500 rankings, second only to New York's 49

  2. Industry breadth: manufacturing, healthcare, retail, food and beverage, insurance, transportation, and logistics all cluster here, so no single sector downturn empties the pipeline

  3. Talent supply: two top-five MBA programs and a dozen strong undergraduate feeders sit within driving distance

  4. Cost of living: consulting salaries are set nationally while Chicago housing runs a fraction of coastal prices, which is the single most underrated reason to pick this office

That last point deserves a number. According to Forbes Advisor's 2026 cost-of-living calculator, San Francisco costs roughly 28% more than Chicago overall, and homes there run about 76% higher. Your first-year package is the same in both cities.

In my experience at Bain, Chicago consultants also traveled less than their coastal counterparts on average. A large share of clients sit inside the metro area or within a short flight, which is a real quality-of-life difference when you are on the road four days a week.

Which MBB Firms Have Offices in Chicago?

All three MBB firms run large Chicago offices, and each treats the city as a flagship US location rather than a satellite. Chicago is commonly the second or third largest US office at all three.

McKinsey & Company

McKinsey has been in Chicago for a century. The firm was founded in the city in 1926 and, per its own US overview page, still frames its American story around that origin. The Chicago office serves consumer goods, industrials, healthcare, and financial services clients across the Midwest.

The office is also on the move. Crain's Chicago Business reported that McKinsey signed a lease on April 29, 2026 to relocate from the Blue Cross Blue Shield Tower at 300 East Randolph Street to Salesforce Tower at 333 West Wolf Point Plaza, taking roughly 72,000 square feet in the 60-story riverfront building. If you are interviewing for McKinsey Chicago in the next two cycles, expect the office address to change.

Boston Consulting Group

BCG's Chicago office opened in 1979 and the firm describes it as one of its largest, most diverse, and most influential offices. It sits at 360 North Green Street in Fulton Market, which moved BCG out of the traditional Loop and into the city's fastest-growing commercial district. Most Chicago clients have worked with the office for more than five years, per BCG's own office page.

One detail I always point candidates toward: BCG says its Chicago staff serve as board members or volunteers with over 60 nonprofits. That is a genuinely useful hook for a "why this office" answer, and almost nobody uses it. BCG Chicago also staffs dedicated recruiting leads for Booth and Kellogg.

Bain & Company

Bain Chicago opened in 1992 and now sits at 190 South LaSalle Street, having grown into a leadership hub for the firm. Its office page lists board members, committee chairs, and practice and capability directors among the partners based there, and names more than 20 Chicago partners outright. Client work spans consumer products, retail, healthcare, technology, telecom, industrials, financial services, and private equity.

Retail and consumer products are the office's signature. If your case practice has been all market entry and profitability with generic widget companies, you are underprepared for what Bain Chicago actually asks about.

Which Tier 2 and Boutique Strategy Firms Are Strong in Chicago?

Chicago has an unusually deep bench below MBB, largely because so many tier 2 consulting firms either started here or built their largest US office here. Several of them pay within striking distance of MBB.

Kearney

Kearney is headquartered at 227 West Monroe Street and has called Chicago home since 1926. The firm publishes an unusually specific number for the office: 261 consultants plus 92 management services colleagues, according to its own Chicago office spotlight. The current space opened in June 2014 and is the seventh Chicago location in the firm's history, all within three blocks of each other.

Kearney is the strongest operations and procurement shop in the city. Cases lean toward sourcing, supply chain, and cost transformation rather than pure growth strategy.

Oliver Wyman, L.E.K., Strategy&, and EY-Parthenon

These four are the classic MBB alternatives, and all four staff Chicago offices. Oliver Wyman skews toward financial services, insurance, and transportation. L.E.K. is the private equity due diligence specialist of the group, with strong life sciences work alongside it.

Strategy& and EY-Parthenon Chicago both sit inside Big 4 parents but recruit and interview more like strategy boutiques. EY-Parthenon in particular runs heavy transaction and turnaround work out of the Midwest, which suits candidates who want deal exposure without leaving consulting.

AlixPartners and Alvarez & Marsal

Both firms built their reputations on turnarounds, and both maintain meaningful Chicago teams. The work is faster, more operational, and less deck-heavy than strategy consulting, and travel can be intense because you often sit on site with a distressed client.

Pay is competitive at the entry level. Alvarez & Marsal starts undergraduate hires at a $112,000 base with a performance bonus reaching $51,000, based on the 2026 consulting pay data reported by Poets&Quants. That bonus ceiling is higher than any MBB undergraduate bonus.

Candidates weighing AlixPartners Chicago against a tier 2 offer should look closely at the variable component.

Which Consulting Firms Are Headquartered in Chicago?

Five consulting firms run their global headquarters inside Chicago, and a sixth sits just north in Evanston. That changes what a job there looks like: senior leadership sits down the hall, internal functions hire locally, and you are not the branch that gets staffed last.

Firm

Founded

Focus

Kearney

1926

Operations, procurement, sourcing, and strategy across 60-plus offices

ZS

1983

Life sciences strategy and analytics, headquartered in Evanston

Huron Consulting Group

2002

Healthcare, higher education, and life sciences advisory

West Monroe

2002

Business and technology consulting for the middle market and private equity

Grant Thornton

1924

Audit, tax, and advisory for mid-market companies

AArete

2008

Profitability improvement and data analytics, based in the Loop

ZS is the one that needs a caveat. Its global headquarters sits at One Rotary Center in Evanston, just north of the city, with a separate Chicago office in Two Prudential Plaza on North Stetson Avenue. Founded in 1983 by two Kellogg professors, ZS now employs more than 15,000 people across 40-plus offices, per its US locations page.

Huron and West Monroe both trace back to Arthur Andersen's 2002 collapse, and West Monroe took its name from Andersen's old West Monroe Street address. That shared origin explains why both firms hire heavily from the same Midwest schools and both run entry-level programs that are easier to enter than MBB.

Which Big 4 and Large Firms Hire Consultants in Chicago?

Deloitte, Accenture, PwC, EY, and KPMG hire more consultants in Chicago than every strategy firm on this list combined. If you want volume of entry points, this is where they are.

Deloitte anchors 111 South Wacker Drive in the Loop, a 51-story tower where it has been the lead tenant since the building opened. Deloitte Chicago covers strategy, technology, risk, and human capital under one roof, which means internal mobility is genuinely possible.

Accenture's local footprint is literal: the 42-story tower at 500 West Madison was officially renamed Accenture Tower in July 2019. The Chicago practice is technology-led, so expect cases about implementation and transformation rather than pure strategy. PwC Chicago, EY, and KPMG round out the group with deals advisory, supply chain, and regulatory work.

The honest tradeoff between these firms and MBB is scope. You will work on larger teams, over longer engagements, further from the CEO, and you will be paid less. You will also face a meaningfully easier interview bar, which is why the MBB versus Big 4 decision comes down to what you want your next five years to look like.

How Much Do Consultants in Chicago Get Paid?

MBB firms set base salary by level, not by city, so a Chicago hire earns exactly what a New York hire earns. The table below shows first-year total compensation reported in the 2026 consulting pay analysis published by Poets&Quants, which covers base salary, performance bonus, and signing bonus.

Two things stand out. MBB base pay has now been flat for three straight years at $192,000 for MBA hires and $112,000 for undergraduate hires at the top of the market.

PwC Strategy& also out-earns BCG and McKinsey at the MBA level on total compensation, which surprises most candidates. MBB salaries are no longer the automatic ceiling they once were.

Some specialist firms do adjust for geography. ZS offers cost-of-living adjustments worth up to $18,000, and L.E.K. runs profit sharing that can reach $19,000. Both matter more in Chicago than the headline base number.

Which Schools Do Chicago Consulting Firms Recruit From?

Chicago offices lean harder on MBA hiring than almost any other US market, because two of the country's strongest business schools sit within a few miles. Chicago Booth and Northwestern Kellogg supply the largest share of MBA hires into every MBB Chicago office, with Michigan Ross close behind.

On the undergraduate side, four schools dominate.

  • Northwestern University: the single largest undergraduate feeder into Chicago MBB offices

  • University of Chicago: a short train ride away, with dedicated firm recruiting teams on campus

  • University of Michigan: large class sizes and a strong Ross undergraduate pipeline

  • University of Notre Dame: a consistent Midwest feeder with strong alumni presence

Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Washington University in St. Louis follow closely, and every firm on this list also hires from national targets. The clearest signal that a campus is a real target is a dedicated recruiting team staffed by working consultants, not just a career fair booth. Check each firm's campus page before you assume you are shut out, and read the full MBB target schools list if your school is not named above.

If you did not attend one of these schools, the Chicago market is still open to you. Every firm on this list hires through referrals, off-cycle applications, and lateral moves from tier 2 firms each year. Having coached hundreds of candidates one on one, I have seen far more non-target candidates fail from applying late than from where they went to school.

How Do You Get a Consulting Job in Chicago?

The process is the same as any other US office, with one twist: your "why Chicago" answer carries real weight because so many applicants list it as a backup to New York. Here is the sequence that works.

  1. Build the office list: pick two or three firms per tier rather than applying everywhere, so your applications stay specific

  2. Network before the deadline: reach out to Chicago-based consultants six to eight weeks before applications open

  3. Fix the resume: a consulting resume is scanned in under a minute, so quantified results matter more than job titles

  4. Apply on time: Chicago deadlines cluster in June and July for undergraduate roles and in the fall for MBA roles

  5. Prepare cases with local context: practice retail, consumer products, healthcare, industrials, and private equity cases, not just generic frameworks

That fourth step trips up more candidates than any other. Deadlines shift every cycle, and Chicago offices fill their interview slots fast because the local applicant pool is so deep. Confirm dates on each firm's careers page and check the broader consulting recruiting timeline before you build your calendar.

Tip #1: Anchor your "why Chicago" answer in the office, not the city

Saying you love deep dish and the lakefront tells an interviewer nothing. Name a specific practice, a client industry, or a piece of community work the office actually does.

BCG's 60-plus nonprofit board placements, Kearney's public sector work with the city, and Bain's private equity concentration all give you something concrete to point at. Interviewers notice immediately when a candidate has read past the homepage.

Tip #2: Practice cases in the industries the city actually serves

Chicago cases skew toward manufacturing, retail, consumer goods, healthcare, food, and logistics. If every case you have practiced involves a software company, you will be slower on cost structures and supply chains than the candidate sitting next to you.

Work through at least ten cases in these sectors before your first round. My case interview course walks you through proven strategies in as little as 7 days if you want a structured way to get there.

Tip #3: Use the headquarters firms as a real second path

Most candidates apply to MBB and the Big 4 and stop. Kearney, Huron, West Monroe, and AArete all hire strong entry-level classes in Chicago with a lower interview bar and genuine strategy work.

Two years at one of these firms is also the cleanest lateral path into MBB. I have coached multiple candidates who missed MBB out of undergrad, spent two years at a Chicago-headquartered firm, and landed the offer on the second attempt.

Tip #4: Network into the office, not into the firm

A referral from a Chicago consultant is worth far more than a referral from someone in another office, because staffing and hiring decisions are made locally. Target alumni from your school who sit in Chicago specifically.

Keep the first message short and ask for 15 minutes, not a job. A tight consulting networking email gets replies at a much higher rate than a long one.

Tip #5: Get your resume reviewed before you submit anything

Chicago offices reject the large majority of applicants at the resume stage, and you only get one submission per firm per cycle. A weak bullet structure or a missing metric is the difference between a first round and a rejection.

Have someone who has actually screened consulting resumes look at yours. My resume review service includes unlimited revisions with a 24-hour turnaround.

Chicago rewards candidates who commit to it. Pick the top consulting firms in Chicago that match the industries you actually care about, build a "why this office" answer nobody else could give, and start practicing cases in those sectors at least three months before applications open.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Chicago a good city for a consulting career?

Chicago is one of the three strongest consulting markets in the United States. The metro area holds 30 Fortune 500 headquarters, second only to New York, across manufacturing, healthcare, retail, food, insurance, and logistics. Because MBB base pay is set nationally while Chicago costs far less than the coasts, your salary also stretches further.

Which consulting firms are headquartered in Chicago?

Kearney, Huron Consulting Group, West Monroe, Grant Thornton, and AArete all run their headquarters from Chicago itself. ZS is headquartered just north of the city in Evanston, with a second Chicago office in Two Prudential Plaza. Being a headquarters office means senior leadership sits locally and internal functions hire there too.

How large is the Bain Chicago office?

Bain does not publish an exact Chicago headcount, but its own office page lists more than 20 partners based there and describes Chicago as a hub for board members, committee chairs, and practice directors. The office opened in 1992, now sits at 190 South LaSalle Street, and serves everything from midsize Midwestern companies to Fortune 1000 clients.

Do Chicago consulting offices pay less than New York or San Francisco?

No. McKinsey, BCG, and Bain set base salary by level rather than by city, so a Chicago associate earns the same base as a New York associate. Some specialist firms adjust for cost of living instead. ZS, for example, offers cost-of-living adjustments worth up to 18,000 dollars.

Which schools do Chicago consulting firms recruit from?

At the undergraduate level, Northwestern, the University of Chicago, the University of Michigan, and Notre Dame supply the largest share of hires into Chicago offices. At the MBA level, Chicago Booth and Northwestern Kellogg dominate, with Michigan Ross close behind. Firms also hire from schools nationwide, so a non-target background is not a disqualifier.

How competitive is it to get into a Chicago consulting office?

Chicago is one of the most competitive US offices at MBB firms because two top-five MBA programs sit in its backyard and the regional undergraduate pipeline is deep. Booth and Kellogg alone supply the largest share of MBA hires into every Chicago MBB office. Candidates who apply to Chicago as a second-choice office face longer odds than those with a clear local story.
