What Is Sustainability Consulting?

Sustainability consulting is advisory work that helps organizations set climate and social targets, cut emissions, report performance to regulators and investors, and redesign products and supply chains around resource constraints. The work sits at the intersection of strategy, finance, operations, and environmental science.

Verdantix splits the market into four service lines, and those four map cleanly onto the kinds of projects you will actually staff on.

  • Sustainability corporate strategy: setting targets, building the business case, and deciding where to invest

  • Data, reporting, and disclosure: carbon accounting, ESRS and ISSB reporting, and assurance readiness

  • Operational transformation: decarbonizing plants, logistics networks, and supplier bases

  • Sustainability financial advisory: green finance, transition risk, and diligence on deals

Sustainability is among the newest of the different types of consulting, which is why its career paths are far less standardized than strategy or operations.

Most candidates assume the work is all reporting. In practice, reporting is the smallest and most commoditized slice, and it is the slice that shrank in 2026.

How is sustainability consulting different from environmental consulting?

Sustainability consulting advises the C-suite on strategy, targets, and disclosure, while environmental consulting delivers technical fieldwork such as site remediation, permitting, and impact assessments. The two overlap at large firms, but the day-to-day jobs are very different.

If you want lab work, site visits, and regulatory permitting, the top environmental consulting firms are a better fit than the strategy houses. If you want board presentations and capital allocation decisions, aim at the tiers below.

Confusing the two is the single most common mistake I see in applications. Candidates write a cover letter about their passion for climate policy and send it to a firm that mostly does contaminated land assessments.

Which Strategy Firms Lead in Sustainability Consulting?

McKinsey, BCG, and Bain lead sustainability strategy work because they own the client relationship at CEO and board level, where target-setting and capital allocation decisions get made. All three built dedicated platforms rather than treating sustainability as a side practice.

McKinsey & Company

McKinsey Sustainability is the firm's client-service platform for decarbonization and climate resilience. In 2023, more than 4,500 McKinsey colleagues worked with 750 clients on roughly 1,700 sustainability engagements across more than 60 countries.

The firm's stated ambition is to be the largest private-sector catalyst for decarbonization. Its strongest capability areas are carbon markets, green business building, and hard-to-abate industrial sectors like cement, steel, and chemicals.

Boston Consulting Group

BCG's Center for Climate & Sustainability brings together more than 1,000 experts covering biodiversity, circular economy, decarbonization, transition financing, and water. BCG reported that the practice ran more than 1,500 projects in 2023, over 50% up on the prior year.

BCG is the only strategy firm that bought a technical specialist outright: it acquired Quantis, an environmental footprinting consultancy, giving it life-cycle assessment depth the other two lack. That combination is why BCG wins consumer goods and food system mandates that need hard science behind the strategy.

Bain & Company

Bain launched its Sustainability and Responsibility practice more than a decade ago. In its 2022 announcement, the firm reported the practice had grown over 65% a year across the prior five years, spanning more than 950 sustainability projects.

Bain's approach is to make every consultant capable rather than to build a walled-off specialist group. It partnered with 12 universities, including MIT, Imperial College London, and HEC Paris, to deliver 40 hours of post-graduate ESG training to every consultant.

Having sat on the other side of the table at Bain, that design choice matters for candidates: you are not applying to a sustainability practice, you are applying to Bain and then steering your staffing toward climate cases. The MBB firms all work this way, so specialization comes after the offer, not before it.

Which Global Professional Services Firms Lead in Sustainability Consulting?

Deloitte, EY, PwC, KPMG, and Accenture dominate the volume end of the market because sustainability reporting eventually touches audit, tax, and systems implementation. Four of those five sat in the Leaders group of the Verdantix 2026 benchmark.

Their advantage is scale and adjacency. A client that already uses one of these firms for statutory audit will hand over ESRS reporting without running a competitive process.

  • Deloitte: named a Verdantix Leader in 2026 and recognized for how it structures and finances sustainability projects, not just what it sells

  • EY: also a 2026 Verdantix Leader, with the strongest assurance-side credibility for companies preparing for mandatory audit of sustainability data

  • PwC: the go-to for interpreting fast-moving disclosure rules, and the firm whose technical guidance most finance teams actually read

  • KPMG: strong across climate and nature strategy, energy transition, supply chain sustainability, and sustainable finance

  • Accenture: the implementation player, and one of the few technology-led firms tracked among the largest global environmental and sustainability consultancies

KPMG research estimates that companies with strong ESG practices can achieve up to 33% higher operating profits than those without, which is the commercial argument these firms sell into finance functions. That framing matters, because finance now controls most sustainability budgets. If you interview at a Big 4 sustainability practice, expect to be tested on whether you can talk about payback periods, not polar bears.

What Are the Best Pure-Play Sustainability Consulting Firms?

The best pure-play sustainability consulting firms are ERM, Anthesis, Quantis, South Pole, and SLR Consulting. These firms do sustainability and nothing else, which means deeper technical benches, faster promotion into subject-matter expertise, and less internal competition for climate staffing.

ERM

ERM is the largest pure-play sustainability consultancy in the world, with more than 8,000 experts across 150 offices in 40 countries and territories, and over 50 years of history. The firm describes its model as "boots to boardroom," meaning it pairs field-level technical delivery with strategy advice for the same client.

ERM reported revenue of about $1.3 billion in 2023 and is owned by KKR alongside its partners. It is the only specialist that competes head-to-head with the Big 4 for board-level ESG mandates rather than with engineering firms.

Anthesis

Anthesis brings together more than 1,250 experts across 45 offices in 23 countries, serving clients including Cisco, Tesco, and Target. The Carlyle Group acquired the firm in July 2023, funding an acquisition run that has pulled in reporting and communications specialists.

Anthesis is the strongest option if you want strategy work plus data tooling in the same role. It is also one of the few specialists with a genuine venture arm working with early-stage climate companies.

Quantis

Quantis is a roughly 300-person environmental sustainability consultancy focused on life-cycle assessment and planetary boundaries. BCG acquired it, so Quantis now sits inside a strategy firm while keeping its own brand and scientific culture.

If your background is in environmental science and you want the technical depth of a specialist with strategy-firm client access, Quantis is one of the most underrated entry points in the market.

South Pole and SLR Consulting

South Pole runs consultancy and advisory work spanning land and water management, climate strategies, renewables, carbon pricing, and climate finance. SLR Consulting employs more than 5,000 people across Europe, the Americas, Australasia, and Africa, and is owned by Ares Management.

Both firms hire heavily for technical sustainability skills rather than general business analysis. Expect a written test or a modeling exercise instead of a classic case.

Which Engineering-Led Firms Do Serious Sustainability Work?

WSP, Arcadis, Ramboll, and Arup run the largest sustainability practices by headcount, because decarbonizing buildings, grids, water systems, and transport networks is fundamentally an engineering problem. Environment Analyst ranks WSP first globally by environmental and sustainability consulting revenue, with Arcadis sixth and Ramboll eighth.

These firms are frequently overlooked by business-school candidates and heavily targeted by engineering and science graduates. That imbalance makes them easier to enter than the strategy tier.

  • WSP: the largest player by environmental and sustainability revenue, built through an aggressive acquisition strategy

  • Arcadis: 34,000 people across more than 30 countries generating €4.9 billion in revenue, centered on natural and built assets

  • Ramboll: owned by the Ramboll Foundation with over 18,000 staff, and unusually strong on Nordic energy transition and waste projects

  • Arup: research-driven and tracked among the leading global firms, with heavy weighting toward buildings and climate resilience

How Much Do Sustainability Consultants Get Paid?

Based on 2026 Glassdoor data, the average US sustainability consultant earns about $103,081 in total pay, with a typical range from $78,782 to $136,387 and a 90th percentile of $174,121. Salary.com independently puts the average at $103,006 as of May 2026, which is a rare case of two aggregators agreeing almost exactly.

Two warnings on these numbers. First, other aggregators report averages as low as $75,678 because they weight nonprofit and corporate in-house roles that carry the same job title but very different work. Second, strategy firm packages sit well above this entire table, since sustainability consultants at McKinsey, BCG, and Bain are paid on the standard consulting scale rather than a sustainability-specific one.

Why Did Sustainability Consulting Demand Shift in 2026?

Both of the regulatory engines that drove the 2021 to 2024 sustainability consulting boom were cut back in 2026, which moved demand away from disclosure work and toward decarbonization projects that pay for themselves. Anyone applying this cycle needs to understand this, because it changes which teams are hiring.

In Europe, the Council of the European Union signed off on the Omnibus simplification on February 24, 2026, raising the CSRD threshold to companies with more than 1,000 employees and above €450 million in net turnover. ERM's own analysis of the final text estimates this cuts the number of in-scope companies by roughly 85%. The revised rules apply to financial years starting on or after January 1, 2027.

In the United States, the SEC voted on March 27, 2025 to end its defense of the climate disclosure rules, and on May 29, 2026 it proposed rescinding them entirely. Chairman Paul Atkins framed the proposal around returning to a materiality-based approach to disclosure.

Here is what most candidates get wrong about this: the work did not disappear, it changed buyers. Reporting budgets shrank, but energy cost, supply chain resilience, and capital project work grew, and those budgets sit with finance and operations rather than a sustainability office.

The market data supports that. Environment Analyst found the global environmental and sustainability consulting market reached $54.7 billion in 2023 and forecast growth to $82.8 billion by 2028, requiring roughly 126,000 additional consulting professionals.

How Do You Get Hired at a Top Sustainability Consulting Firm?

You get hired by matching your preparation to the tier you are targeting, because the four tiers screen for completely different things. Strategy firms test structured problem solving under time pressure, while pure-play and engineering-led firms test technical fluency and written communication.

  1. Pick your tier first: decide between strategy, global network, pure-play, and engineering-led before you write a single application, since the resume that wins one loses another

  2. Learn the technical vocabulary: know Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, marginal abatement cost curves, science-based targets, and the difference between ESRS and ISSB reporting

  3. Quantify climate impact on your resume: tons of CO2 avoided, percentage energy reduction, and dollars saved land far harder than "supported sustainability initiatives"

  4. Prepare for the right assessment: strategy firms and Big 4 strategy arms run cases, while ERM's careers page confirms its process typically includes interviews and sometimes a technical or case-based assessment

  5. Build one commercial story: every firm in every tier now wants to hear you connect an environmental decision to a financial outcome

Case interviews are the biggest filter at the strategy tier, and a sustainability case interview follows standard case structure with emissions targets and cost constraints layered on top. If you want to learn case interviews quickly, my case interview course walks you through proven strategies in as little as 7 days.

Cases built around disclosure, ratings, and investor pressure show up far more often at Big 4 practices than at strategy firms. An ESG case interview tests whether you can translate a ratings downgrade or a failed audit into a concrete business consequence.

The math also skews differently. Instead of pure profitability trees, you will calculate cost per ton abated, payback periods on efficiency retrofits, and emissions across a supplier base, so your case interview frameworks need a cost and emissions dimension rather than revenue alone.

On the application itself, quantified climate results are what separate the shortlist from the rejection pile. My resume review service can help you rewrite vague sustainability bullets into numbers that survive a 30-second screen.

How Should You Choose Which Firm to Target?

Choose based on what you want your day to look like in three years, not on brand prestige. Each tier produces a very different professional, and switching between them later is harder than people expect.

  • Best for board-level strategy: McKinsey, BCG, and Bain, where you advise on target-setting and capital allocation but stay a generalist

  • Best for regulatory and reporting depth: Deloitte, EY, PwC, and KPMG, where disclosure expertise transfers directly into corporate roles

  • Best for technical specialization: ERM, Anthesis, and Quantis, where you build genuine subject-matter authority within two or three years

  • Best for infrastructure and the built environment: WSP, Arcadis, Ramboll, and Arup, where projects run for years rather than weeks

  • Best for easiest entry with a science background: the engineering-led and pure-play tiers, which recruit far less competitively than the strategy tier

One consideration people underweight is exit optionality. Strategy firm alumni move into corporate strategy, private equity, and climate tech leadership roles, and consulting exit opportunities from the strategy tier remain broader than those from a technical specialist role.

That said, specialists win on speed to expertise. A three-year ERM consultant knows more about carbon accounting than almost any strategy firm manager, and that expertise is scarce enough to command a premium in corporate sustainability leadership hiring.

The top sustainability consulting firms are not competing for the same candidate, which is exactly why a scattershot application strategy fails here. Pick one tier, learn its technical language, quantify every climate result on your resume, and prepare for the specific assessment that tier uses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which sustainability consulting firm is the best?

There is no single best firm because the four tiers solve different problems. Verdantix rated Deloitte, ERM, EY, KPMG, and PwC as the strongest overall performers in its 2026 sustainability consulting benchmark. For board-level climate strategy, McKinsey and BCG lead. For deep technical sustainability work, ERM is the largest pure-play specialist in the market.

Is sustainability consulting a good career?

Sustainability consulting is a strong career if you pick the right tier. Environment Analyst projects the global environmental and sustainability consulting market will grow from $54.7 billion in 2023 to $82.8 billion by 2028, which would require roughly 126,000 additional consultants. Pay varies widely, with US sustainability consultants averaging about $103,000 according to 2026 Glassdoor data and top earners clearing $174,000.

What is the difference between ESG consulting and sustainability consulting?

ESG consulting is a subset of sustainability consulting focused on how investors and regulators measure a company. It covers disclosure, ratings, materiality assessments, and due diligence. Sustainability consulting is broader and includes decarbonization, circularity, supply chain redesign, and green business building, most of which never appears in an ESG report.

Do sustainability consulting firms use case interviews?

Strategy firms and Big 4 strategy arms use case interviews for sustainability roles, and the cases follow standard structures with emissions and cost constraints layered on top. Pure-play firms such as ERM more often use technical assessments, written exercises, and presentations instead. ERM's own careers page states its process typically includes an online application, interviews, and sometimes a technical or case-based assessment.

Do you need a sustainability degree to get hired?

No. Strategy and Big 4 firms hire generalists and train them, which is why Bain built a 40-hour ESG curriculum with 12 universities to upskill its consultants. Pure-play and engineering-led firms weight technical credentials more heavily, so a science, engineering, or environmental degree helps there. Carbon accounting fluency matters more than any specific major.

How much do sustainability consultants get paid?

Based on 2026 Glassdoor data, the average US sustainability consultant earns about $103,081 in total pay, with the typical range running from $78,782 to $136,387 and the 90th percentile at $174,121. Salary.com puts the average at a nearly identical $103,006 as of May 2026. Strategy firm packages sit well above these figures because those roles are paid on the general consulting scale.
