Deloitte cover letter

A Deloitte cover letter is a one-page document submitted alongside your resume that explains why you are a strong fit for Deloitte and the specific role you are applying for. While most Deloitte applications list the cover letter as optional, submitting a well-written one can give borderline candidates a significant edge during the screening stage.

As a former Bain interviewer who has read hundreds of cover letters, I can tell you that most candidates waste this opportunity with generic, copy-paste letters. This guide walks you through exactly how to write a Deloitte cover letter that gets noticed, including step-by-step instructions, examples, and insider tips.

But first, a quick heads up:

McKinsey, BCG, Bain, and other top firms accept less than 1% of applicants every year. If you want to triple your chances of landing interviews and 8x your chances of passing them, watch my free 40-minute training.

What Changed in 2026?

We overhauled this article with new guidance on AI-generated cover letters (which Deloitte recruiters can now spot easily), added a section on tailoring by service line and role level, included a formatting specifications table, and restructured every heading for question-based search compatibility. We also refreshed all three cover letter examples and added annotations explaining what makes each one effective.

Does Deloitte Require a Cover Letter?

Deloitte does not require a cover letter for most positions. The online application system typically lists it as optional. However, submitting a strong cover letter can meaningfully improve your chances of getting past the screening stage.

Deloitte receives hundreds of thousands of applications every year, according to their careers page. When recruiters are sorting through that volume, a tailored cover letter gives them an additional reason to move your application to the "yes" pile. This is especially true if your resume is on the borderline.

Interviewers also sometimes read your cover letter before meeting you. In my experience at Bain, I would often skim a candidate's cover letter right before the interview to understand their background and find conversation starters.

One important warning about AI-generated cover letters.

Deloitte has publicly cautioned applicants against relying on AI tools to write their cover letters. According to Deloitte's careers page, AI cover letters have a "distinctive style and format" that are not representative of your voice, which puts you at a disadvantage compared to candidates who come across as more genuine. If you use AI as a starting point, make sure you rewrite the letter entirely in your own voice.

Regardless of whether you submit a cover letter, your resume is still the most important component of your application. Make sure you spend the majority of your time crafting a strong Deloitte resume before turning your attention to the cover letter.

What Does Deloitte Look For in a Cover Letter?

Deloitte evaluates cover letters for four core qualities: communication, problem solving, leadership, and interpersonal skills. These are the same qualities Deloitte lists on their official interviewing website as essential for a successful consulting career.

Communication: Show that you can explain complex ideas clearly and concisely. Your cover letter itself is a writing sample, so the quality of your prose matters. Roughly 70% of a consultant's work involves communicating findings to clients and stakeholders.

Problem solving: Share a specific example of how you identified a problem, analyzed it, and implemented a solution. Include a quantified result whenever possible.

Leadership: Describe a time you led a team, managed a project, or took initiative to drive change. Deloitte values collaboration heavily, so frame your leadership as empowering others rather than commanding them.

Interpersonal skills: Demonstrate your ability to work with diverse teams, resolve conflict, and adapt to different working styles. According to Glassdoor data, over 80% of Deloitte interview feedback mentions teamwork as a key evaluation criterion.

How Does a Cover Letter Differ from a Resume?

Your resume and cover letter serve different purposes in your application. Understanding the distinction will help you avoid the common mistake of simply rephrasing your resume in letter form.

How Do You Write a Deloitte Cover Letter Step by Step?

There are five steps to writing the perfect Deloitte cover letter: the contact information, the salutation, the opening paragraph, the body paragraphs, and the concluding paragraph. Following this structure keeps your letter organized and easy for recruiters to scan.

What Contact Information Should You Include?

At the top of your Deloitte cover letter, include your name, email address, phone number, and mailing address. Bold your name and make the font size larger than the rest of your cover letter so it stands out immediately.

Here is an example of how this should look:

John Doe

[email protected]

(123) 456-7890

123 Main Street, San Francisco, CA 94105

How Should You Address the Recipient?

Start your Deloitte cover letter with a personalized salutation. Do not use "To whom it may concern." This feels cold and signals that you did not do any research.

If you know the name of the recruiter assigned to your school or program, address them directly. If not, address the Deloitte recruiting team. Here are a few salutations that work:

  • Dear [Recruiter Name] and members of the Deloitte Recruiting Team,

  • To [Recruiter Name] and the Deloitte Recruiting Team,

  • Dear members of the Deloitte Recruiting Team,

How Do You Write a Strong Opening Paragraph?

The opening paragraph is the most important part of your Deloitte cover letter. Most recruiters will only read the opening paragraph and skim the rest. Having coached hundreds of candidates, I've seen that a weak opening kills an otherwise strong letter.

Your opening paragraph should consist of exactly two sentences. The first sentence summarizes your background and credentials in one powerful statement. The second sentence names the specific Deloitte role you are applying for and previews three reasons why you are a great fit.

Make sure to use the correct Deloitte job title. Deloitte's post-undergraduate role is called Business Analyst. Their post-MBA role is called Consultant. Undergraduate summer interns are Summer Analysts, and MBA summer interns are Summer Consultants. Using the wrong title signals that you have not done your research.

Here is an example of a strong opening paragraph:

I am a marketing professional with four years of experience working on digital marketing projects that have generated over $100M in revenue at Netflix and Amazon. I believe my problem solving skills, leadership, and passion for client service make me an excellent fit for the Consultant role at Deloitte.

What Should Your Body Paragraphs Cover?

Write three body paragraphs, one for each of the three reasons you previewed in your opening paragraph. Each paragraph should highlight one quality through a specific story or example.

Start each body paragraph with a bolded summary sentence. This is critical because many recruiters will only read these summary sentences and skip the details. According to recruiting data, the average cover letter gets about 30 seconds of attention.

After the summary sentence, use 2 to 3 additional sentences to describe the situation, the actions you took, and the results you achieved. Include a number or metric whenever possible. Keep each paragraph concise. Three large, dense paragraphs will cause the reader to skip your letter entirely.

Here is an example of an effective body paragraph:

My problem solving skills helped me develop a customer ROI model that saved Amazon $50M per year. I analyzed over 500K customer data points to create a model forecasting customer value. I quantified how much the average happy customer was worth versus a neutral and unhappy customer. From this model, I discovered that Amazon's recent customer initiative had a drastically negative ROI and persuaded the CFO to reallocate the budget to higher-return projects.

You can also format your three body paragraphs as three bullet points instead. This makes your cover letter even easier to scan.

How Do You Write the Closing Paragraph?

The closing paragraph should be exactly two sentences. In the first sentence, briefly summarize your three reasons for being a great fit. In the second sentence, include a call to action requesting the opportunity to interview.

This "tell them, tell them, tell them again" structure sounds redundant but is extremely effective for short-form professional documents. It reinforces your key messages and makes the letter memorable.

Here is an example:

Due to my problem solving skills, leadership experience, and strong interpersonal abilities, I believe I have the qualities to become a successful Deloitte consultant. I would welcome the opportunity to discuss my candidacy and fit in an interview.

How Should You Tailor Your Cover Letter to Deloitte?

A generic cover letter is the single fastest way to get rejected. The best test for whether your letter is tailored enough: replace every mention of "Deloitte" with another firm's name. If the letter still works, it is not specific enough.

How Do You Weave in Your "Why Deloitte" Reasons?

Your cover letter should include at least one specific reason why you want to work at Deloitte rather than any other firm. Research Deloitte's recent projects, industry focus areas, or cultural values and connect them to your own experiences and goals.

For example, you might mention Deloitte's strength in technology consulting if you have a tech background, or their commitment to social impact if you have nonprofit experience. For more ideas, check out our list of 20 reasons to answer "Why Deloitte?" and adapt two or three for your cover letter.

Should You Reference Networking Contacts?

Yes, but only if the interaction was meaningful. Do not simply name-drop a Deloitte employee you spoke with for five minutes at a career fair. Instead, explain what insight you gained from the conversation and how it shaped your interest in the firm.

For example: "After speaking with [Name] at the Deloitte campus information session, I was struck by how Deloitte's staffing model allows consultants to work across industries within their first two years. This aligns with my goal to build broad business acumen early in my career."

How Should You Tailor by Service Line and Role Level?

Deloitte has multiple service lines, including Consulting, Advisory, Audit, and Tax. Your cover letter should reflect which service line you are applying to. A cover letter for Deloitte Consulting should emphasize strategy and problem solving, while a letter for Advisory might highlight risk management or regulatory expertise.

Role level also matters. If you are applying for a Summer Analyst position, your letter should emphasize curiosity, learning ability, and foundational analytical skills. If you are applying as an experienced hire for a Senior Consultant or Manager role, your letter should focus on client management, project leadership, and industry expertise.

What Formatting Should You Use for a Deloitte Cover Letter?

Your cover letter formatting should be clean, professional, and easy to read. Poor formatting can distract from your message and signal a lack of attention to detail.

Element

Recommendation

Font

Arial, Calibri, or Times New Roman

Font size

10 to 11.5 point for body text

Margins

0.75 to 1 inch on all sides

Length

One page maximum (roughly 300 to 400 words)

Paragraphs

5 paragraphs: intro, 3 body, conclusion

File format

PDF (to avoid formatting issues across devices)

Spacing

Single-spaced with a blank line between paragraphs

Keep your formatting consistent throughout. Avoid decorative fonts, colors, graphics, or unusual layouts. The goal is to make your letter easy to scan in under 30 seconds.

What Are the Most Common Deloitte Cover Letter Mistakes?

The most common Deloitte cover letter mistake is submitting a generic letter that could apply to any consulting firm. Below are seven mistakes I see repeatedly when reviewing candidates' cover letters.

Rephrasing your resume. Your cover letter should complement your resume, not repeat it. Use the letter to explain why your experience matters and how it connects to Deloitte. If a recruiter reads your cover letter and learns nothing new beyond your resume, the letter added no value.

Name dropping without substance. Mentioning a Deloitte employee you barely spoke with can feel superficial. If you reference a person, explain what you learned from them and how it shaped your interest. Otherwise, leave the name out.

Writing more than one page. According to recruiting surveys, over 60% of recruiters prefer cover letters that are under one page. A long letter signals that you cannot communicate concisely, which is a red flag for a consulting role.

Making unsupported claims. Do not say "I have strong analytical skills" without a specific example. Always back up every claim with evidence. Include a number or metric to make your example concrete and credible.

Using the wrong job title or service line. Double-check that you are referencing the correct role (Business Analyst vs. Consultant vs. Senior Consultant) and the correct service line. Getting this wrong tells the recruiter you did not pay attention to the job posting.

Submitting an AI-generated letter without editing. As noted earlier, Deloitte has warned that recruiters can identify AI-written cover letters. If you use AI to draft your letter, rewrite it completely in your own voice.

Typos and grammatical errors. Consulting is a detail-oriented profession. A cover letter with spelling mistakes or awkward phrasing will hurt your credibility immediately. Proofread at least three times and have someone else review it.

What Tips Will Make Your Deloitte Cover Letter Stand Out?

Follow these tips to give yourself the best chance of landing a Deloitte interview with your cover letter.

Quantify your accomplishments. Numbers make your achievements concrete and memorable. Instead of saying you "improved sales," say you "increased sales by 20% over six months, generating an additional $2M in revenue." Based on my experience reviewing cover letters, candidates who include at least two quantified results are significantly more likely to pass the screening stage.

Pick your best stories. You only have space for three body paragraphs. Choose the three most impressive, unique, or interesting experiences from your background. These should demonstrate the qualities Deloitte values: communication, problem solving, leadership, and interpersonal skills.

Use the cover letter to explain red flags. If you have a low GPA, a gap in your work history, or are applying to an office you have no connection to, the cover letter is the place to address it. Keep the explanation brief and positive.

  • If you have a gap in your resume, explain how you used that time productively, such as taking courses or volunteering

  • If your GPA is lower than ideal, highlight an upward trend in your grades or additional qualifications that demonstrate your capabilities

  • If you are applying to an unfamiliar office, explain why you are genuinely interested in that geography for the long term

Keep it short and punchy. Think of your cover letter as a highlight reel, not a documentary. Every sentence should add value. If a sentence does not help the recruiter understand why you are a strong fit for Deloitte, remove it.

Get help from others. Have at least two or three people review your cover letter before you submit it. Ideally, one of those reviewers should be a current or former consultant. Fresh eyes catch errors and weak spots that you will miss on your own.

What Do Strong Deloitte Cover Letter Examples Look Like?

Below are three examples of strong Deloitte cover letters for different candidate profiles. Each example follows the five-part structure outlined in this guide and demonstrates the qualities Deloitte looks for.

Deloitte Cover Letter Example #1: Undergraduate Student

This example works because the candidate opens with a clear, quantified credential (3.9 GPA), names the exact role (Business Analyst), and previews three distinct qualities. The body paragraphs each tell a specific story with a measurable result. The tone is confident without being arrogant.

Deloitte Cover Letter Example #2: MBA Student

This example stands out because the candidate connects their pre-MBA experience directly to Deloitte's industry focus. The letter mentions a specific Deloitte initiative that resonates with the candidate's background, which shows genuine research. Each body paragraph leads with a bolded summary sentence and includes a quantified result.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should You Write a Different Cover Letter for Each Deloitte Service Line?

Yes. Your cover letter should reflect the specific service line you are applying to. A letter for Deloitte Consulting should emphasize strategic thinking and structured problem solving. A letter for Deloitte Advisory should highlight risk management or financial expertise. Using the same letter for different service lines signals to recruiters that you are not genuinely invested in the role.

How Long Should a Deloitte Cover Letter Be?

A Deloitte cover letter should be one page, roughly 300 to 400 words. According to recruiting surveys, over 60% of hiring managers prefer cover letters that are under one page. Keeping your letter concise shows that you can communicate efficiently, which is a core consulting skill.

Can You Use AI to Write Your Deloitte Cover Letter?

Deloitte has explicitly warned candidates that AI-generated cover letters have a recognizable style that puts applicants at a disadvantage. If you use AI tools to brainstorm or draft, you must rewrite the letter entirely in your own voice. Recruiters can tell the difference, and submitting an obviously AI-generated letter may hurt your application more than not submitting a cover letter at all.

Should You Mention Networking Contacts in Your Deloitte Cover Letter?

Only if the interaction was meaningful. Do not simply list names of Deloitte employees you have met. Instead, describe a specific insight you gained from the conversation and how it informed your interest in the firm. Superficial name-dropping can actually backfire and make your letter feel less genuine.

What Is the Biggest Mistake Candidates Make on Deloitte Cover Letters?

The biggest mistake is being generic. A cover letter that could apply to any firm at any time adds no value to your application. The best Deloitte cover letters include specific reasons for wanting to work at Deloitte, reference the correct role title and service line, and connect the candidate's experiences to Deloitte's culture and needs. If your letter passes the "replace Deloitte with another firm name" test without any changes needed, it is too generic.
