Pre-MBA programs

Pre-MBA programs are structured events hosted by top employers that give incoming MBA students early exposure to consulting, finance, and other industries before classes even start. These programs can include networking sessions, case workshops, mentorship pairings, and scholarship awards worth up to $40,000 or more.

If you are starting your MBA this fall, applying to pre-MBA programs is one of the smartest moves you can make. This article covers every major pre-MBA program across consulting, finance, and other industries, plus step-by-step advice on how to get accepted.

But first, a quick heads up:

McKinsey, BCG, Bain, and other top firms accept less than 1% of applicants every year. If you want to triple your chances of landing interviews and 8x your chances of passing them, watch my free 40-minute training.

What Changed in 2026?

This article has been fully updated for the 2026 recruiting cycle. We added several new programs including the Analysis Group Ignite externship, the LEK Bridge program, and the Bain Mustaqbalak Middle East initiative. We also added comparison tables for both consulting and finance programs, a new section on application timelines, and expanded coverage of how pre-MBA programs connect to full-time offers.

What Are Pre-MBA Programs?

Pre-MBA programs are information sessions, workshops, and networking events hosted by major employers for incoming MBA students. The vast majority of pre-MBA programs are for those interested in consulting or finance, but programs also exist for marketing, healthcare, and technology.

According to MIT Sloan's Career Development Office, pre-MBA programs are typically found at large companies and are more of a "day in the life" and "get to know us" style event rather than a traditional work assignment. Most programs run between one day and three weeks, with the majority lasting one to five days.

There are three major types of pre-MBA programs: scholarship programs, diversity programs, and general interest programs.

What Is the Difference Between a Pre-MBA Program and a Pre-MBA Internship?

Pre-MBA programs and pre-MBA internships serve different purposes. A pre-MBA program is a structured learning event hosted by a company where you attend sessions, workshops, and networking events. You typically do not perform actual work for the company.

A pre-MBA internship is a traditional work experience where you contribute to real projects at a company. These internships are usually student-sourced through networking, often at startups or smaller firms. They can last several weeks and sometimes lead to paid offers.

You can participate in multiple pre-MBA programs during the same summer since they tend to be short. A pre-MBA internship is a bigger time commitment and usually limits you to one.

What Are the Three Types of Pre-MBA Programs?

Scholarship programs are competitive programs that award monetary prizes alongside mentorship and coaching. For example, the McKinsey Emerging Scholars program awards up to $10,000 and includes one-on-one mentorship from a McKinsey consultant. The Goldman Sachs MBA Fellowship awards $35,000 plus an additional $40,000 upon accepting a full-time offer.

Diversity programs are targeted towards incoming MBA students from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds, including Black, Hispanic/Latino, Indigenous, and gender-diverse candidates. These programs often include case workshops, mock interviews, and direct access to firm recruiters. According to BCG, their Empower program is specifically designed to help participants build their business toolkit and receive coaching from BCG consultants.

General interest programs are open to all incoming MBA students regardless of background. These programs focus on educating participants about a particular career path or company. Experience Bain, BCG Unlock, and McKinsey Early Access are the three largest general interest consulting programs.

Who Is Eligible for Pre-MBA Programs?

To be eligible for most pre-MBA programs, you must be accepted into a two-year MBA program and plan to begin school in the upcoming fall. First-year, second-year, and executive MBA candidates are generally not eligible.

Some programs have additional requirements. Diversity programs typically require candidates to identify as Black, Hispanic/Latino, Indigenous, or gender-diverse. Scholarship programs often require essays and interviews on top of a resume submission.

If you are enrolled in a dual-degree program such as a JD/MBA or MD/MBA, you are encouraged to apply before beginning your first year of business school. Many programs also require you to be admitted to a school on their eligible schools list, so check each program's requirements carefully.

Are Pre-MBA Programs Worth It?

Yes. Pre-MBA programs provide a meaningful competitive advantage during MBA recruiting. In my experience coaching hundreds of candidates, those who participate in pre-MBA programs tend to enter business school with stronger networks, better recruiting preparation, and greater confidence in their career direction.

Here are the four biggest benefits:

  • Early access to recruiters. Many firms use pre-MBA programs as a talent pipeline. Recruiters will already know your name when official recruiting begins in the fall, which can increase your chances of landing an interview. According to Bain's Experience Bain page, participants can meet Bain team members they can stay in touch with throughout recruiting.

  • Scholarship money. The financial awards from scholarship programs can be significant. The Goldman Sachs MBA Fellowship totals up to $75,000 across the internship and full-time offer. The Bain Be Bold Scholarship awards $10,000 plus a guaranteed internship offer. McKinsey Emerging Scholars awards up to $10,000.

  • Recruiting preparation. Many programs include case workshops, mock interviews, and resume reviews. This preparation can save you weeks of independent studying once classes begin. Having coached over 5,000 candidates, I can tell you that early preparation is one of the biggest differentiators between candidates who get offers and those who do not.

  • Career clarity. If you are deciding between consulting, finance, or another path, pre-MBA programs let you explore multiple industries before committing. You can attend a consulting program and a finance program in the same summer.

How Do Pre-MBA Programs Connect to Full-Time Offers?

Pre-MBA programs are the first step in a multi-stage recruiting pipeline. The typical path works like this: you attend a pre-MBA program the summer before your MBA, then apply for a summer internship during your first year, then convert that internship into a full-time offer before your second year begins.

Some programs make this pipeline even more direct. The Bain Be Bold Scholarship includes an early internship offer. The Roland Berger Be Bold program guarantees all participants a first-round interview. The P&G MBA Marketing Summer Camp gives all participants an interview for a summer internship at the end of the program.

Even programs without guaranteed interviews create a recruiting advantage. Firms track who participates, and your name recognition with recruiters can make a difference when applications are reviewed.

How Competitive Are Pre-MBA Programs?

Selectivity varies widely by program type. General interest programs like Experience Bain, BCG Unlock, and McKinsey Early Access are open to most incoming MBA students at eligible schools. These are registration-based rather than application-based, so nearly everyone who registers can participate.

Scholarship and diversity programs are much more competitive. Programs like McKinsey Emerging Scholars, the Bain BASE program, and the Goldman Sachs MBA Fellowship receive hundreds of applications for a limited number of spots. These programs typically require a resume, essays, and sometimes interviews.

In general, the more selective the program, the greater the benefit. A spot in the Bain BASE program or McKinsey Inspire gives you direct face time with consultants and signals strong interest to the firm. That said, even the open-registration programs provide real value through webinars, case prep sessions, and networking.

When Should You Apply to Pre-MBA Programs?

Most pre-MBA program applications open between February and April, with deadlines falling between March and May. Programs typically take place from June through August, before your MBA classes begin in the fall.

Here is a general timeline based on common program deadlines:

What Is the Typical Pre-MBA Program Application Timeline?

Timeframe

Action

February to March

Research programs and deadlines. Begin drafting essays and updating your resume.

March to April

Submit applications to scholarship and diversity programs (these have earlier deadlines).

April to May

Register for general interest programs like Experience Bain (deadline: early May), BCG Unlock, and McKinsey Early Access.

May to June

Complete behavioral interviews for selective programs. Begin attending early virtual sessions.

June to August

Attend program sessions, workshops, and networking events. Build relationships with recruiters and consultants.

Some programs review applications on a rolling basis, so applying early gives you an advantage. For the 2026 cycle, the Bain Experience Bain registration deadline is May 3, 2026. Plan to have your resume finalized and essays drafted by early March.

How Do You Get Into Pre-MBA Programs?

Getting accepted into competitive pre-MBA programs requires a strong resume, a clear application plan, and preparation for behavioral interviews. Here are the three most important steps.

How Do You Write a Strong Pre-MBA Application?

Perfect your resume first. Your resume is the single most important component of any pre-MBA application. Dedicate at least several days to refining it and getting feedback from peers, mentors, and colleagues.

Follow these resume guidelines:

  • Keep your resume to one page. If it is longer, make your content more concise.

  • Start every bullet with a past-tense verb to show completed accomplishments.

  • Include a number or metric in every bullet to quantify your impact.

  • Balance quantitative accomplishments (analyzing data) with qualitative ones (managing teams).

  • Avoid technical jargon, unfamiliar acronyms, and buzzwords with unclear meanings.

  • Prioritize showcasing experience at brand-name companies.

  • Include personal interests at the end to give reviewers something memorable.

If you need professional help, check out our resume review and editing service.

Create an application plan. Identify which programs you want to apply to and list all deadlines. Since many programs review applications on a rolling basis, apply as early as possible. Budget time for essays, which many scholarship programs require.

Apply to as many programs as you have the bandwidth for. There is no downside to attending multiple programs, and attending several will maximize your network and exposure.

How Do You Prepare for Pre-MBA Behavioral Interviews?

Many selective pre-MBA programs include a behavioral interview. Common questions include asking about times you led a team, overcame failure, solved a problem with data, or resolved conflict.

To prepare, follow these guidelines:

  • Prepare 6 to 8 stories in advance that draw upon your professional and personal experiences. This ensures you have prepared answers for nearly any behavioral question.

  • Select your most impressive, impactful, or unique experiences. Showcase highlights, not just any relevant experience.

  • Make sure your stories cover a range of qualities: leadership, teamwork, problem solving, resilience, integrity, decision making, and communication.

  • Structure your answers using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result). Cover the Situation and Task quickly, then spend most of your time on the Action and Result.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do You Need to Participate in a Pre-MBA Program to Get a Consulting Offer?

No. Pre-MBA programs are completely optional. Many successful candidates receive consulting offers without ever participating in a pre-MBA program. However, these programs give you a meaningful head start on recruiting, networking, and interview preparation.

Can You Apply to Multiple Pre-MBA Programs at Once?

Yes. You can and should apply to multiple programs. Since most programs are short (one to five days) and many are virtual, there is no conflict in attending several. Many candidates attend programs at McKinsey, BCG, and Bain during the same summer.

Do Pre-MBA Programs Guarantee an Internship or Job Offer?

Most do not. However, some programs do provide guaranteed interviews or early offers. The Roland Berger Be Bold program guarantees all participants a first-round interview. The Bain Be Bold Scholarship includes an early internship offer. The P&G MBA Marketing Summer Camp provides an interview at the end of the program.

What Should You Wear to an In-Person Pre-MBA Program?

Business casual is the standard dress code for most in-person pre-MBA programs unless the program specifies otherwise. This typically means slacks or a skirt with a collared shirt or blouse. When in doubt, check the program's welcome email or ask the program coordinator.

Are Pre-MBA Programs Only for Students at Top-Ranked MBA Programs?

Not all of them, but many are. Programs like Experience Bain and BCG Unlock maintain eligible school lists that primarily include top 20 to 30 MBA programs. However, some programs like McKinsey Early Access, Deloitte's Immersion Program, and several finance programs are open to a broader set of schools. Always check each program's eligibility requirements.

When Do Pre-MBA Program Applications Open?

Most applications open between February and April, with deadlines between March and May. General interest programs like Experience Bain and BCG Unlock tend to have later deadlines (April to early May), while scholarship and diversity programs often have earlier deadlines (March to April). Check each program's website starting in February for the most current dates.
