BCG Unlock

BCG Unlock is a virtual summer program that gives incoming MBA students a behind-the-scenes look at consulting life at Boston Consulting Group. The program runs from late May through early August and includes optional virtual sessions where you can connect with BCG consultants, explore the firm’s client work, and build your network before fall recruiting begins.

If you’re considering applying to BCG Unlock, this guide covers everything you need to know, including eligibility, the application process, the BCG Consulting Career Assessment, and how to get the most out of the program.

But first, a quick heads up:

McKinsey, BCG, Bain, and other top firms accept less than 1% of applicants every year. If you want to triple your chances of landing interviews and 8x your chances of passing them, watch my free 40-minute training.

What Is BCG Unlock?

BCG Unlock is a summer learning program that introduces incoming MBA students to the people, insights, and experiences that make BCG unique. According to BCG, the program helps participants get a head start on the fall recruiting internship season by building skills and growing their network through a series of virtual events.

The program is entirely virtual and completely optional. You can attend as many or as few sessions as you want, depending on your schedule. Most sessions are scheduled during the lunch hour or early evening in North American time zones and last 45 minutes to one hour. Sessions that you miss are typically recorded and accessible online.

As a participant in BCG Unlock, you can expect to:

  • Connect with BCG consultants and leaders through personal, candid dialogue about consulting life

  • Get a behind-the-scenes look at how BCG works with clients on transformational projects

  • Learn about the support systems, career development tools, and digital capabilities BCG offers

  • Ask any questions you have about consulting, BCG, and recruiting for the upcoming year

  • Network with other incoming MBA candidates from top business schools

If you have questions about the program, you can email BCG’s MBA recruiting team at [email protected]. You can also check out our list of pre-MBA programs for other opportunities across consulting firms.

In addition to the core Unlock programming, BCG hosts additional events for candidates from underrepresented backgrounds, including participants who connect with BCG’s Black@BCG, Latin@BCG, Indigenous@BCG, Women@BCG, Pride@BCG, Veterans@BCG, and Asian@BCG networks.

BCG Empower is one example. BCG Empower is an invite-only workshop within BCG Unlock for incoming MBA students who want to connect with members of the Black@BCG, Latin@BCG, and Indigenous@BCG networks. The Empower workshop includes small group sessions, case preparation, and social events.

Who Is Eligible for BCG Unlock?

To be eligible for BCG Unlock, you must be enrolled in a two-year MBA program and entering your first year in the upcoming fall. First-year MBA students already on campus, second-year MBAs, and executive MBAs are not eligible for the program.

Dual-degree students, such as MD/MBAs and JD/MBAs, are eligible to apply. BCG encourages dual-degree candidates to apply in the spring before they begin the first year of their MBA program.

BCG welcomes applications from any pre-MBA student, but they particularly encourage applications from the following programs:

If your school is not on this list, you can still apply. According to BCG’s careers page, they welcome applications from any pre-MBA student. In my experience coaching candidates, students from non-target schools have been accepted into BCG Unlock. Your resume quality and professional background matter more than the name of your school.

BCG Unlock is designed for all eligible MBA students, whether you’ve already decided on consulting or are still exploring whether it’s the right career path. Applying does not require any commitment to participate, and there is no cost or risk in applying.

When Is the BCG Unlock Deadline?

The deadline to register for BCG Unlock is typically in late April or May. For the 2025 cycle, BCG’s deadline was May 19, 2025. BCG has noted that they continue to accept registrations after the deadline on a rolling basis, but applying before the deadline is recommended.

Check the BCG Unlock website for the official deadline for the upcoming cycle. You should also check our list of all BCG application deadlines for internships, full-time roles, and other programs.

Your application to BCG Unlock has no impact on your candidacy for other BCG programs or roles. According to BCG, participation in Unlock has no bearing on future internship or full-time opportunities at the firm.

What Does the BCG Unlock Application Require?

The BCG Unlock application is completed through BCG’s online registration form. It is recommended that you use your school email address if you already have one, as this makes it easier for BCG’s recruiting team to match your application with your target school.

The application has four main components: your resume, test scores, office preferences, and an optional indication of interest in BCG Empower.

Resume

Your consulting resume is the most important part of your BCG Unlock application. It determines how BCG’s recruiting team evaluates your background and potential fit for consulting. According to Glassdoor, the average BCG office receives over 3,000 applications per recruiting cycle, so your resume needs to stand out.

Follow these tips to strengthen your resume:

  • Keep it to one page. If it is longer, make your content more concise.

  • Start every bullet with a past-tense action verb to show completed accomplishments.

  • Include a number or metric in every bullet to quantify your impact. For example, "Led a team of 8 to increase operational efficiency by 25%" is stronger than "Managed a team to improve operations."

  • Balance quantitative skill bullets (analyzing data, building models) with qualitative skill bullets (leading teams, managing stakeholders).

  • Avoid technical jargon, unfamiliar acronyms, and buzzwords that a non-specialist would not understand.

  • Include personal interests at the bottom to give reviewers something memorable to connect with you on.

If you need help crafting a resume that lands consulting interviews, check out our resume review and editing service. We offer unlimited revisions with 24-hour turnarounds to help you get it right.

Test Scores

The BCG Unlock application requires you to submit your test scores for the SAT, ACT, GMAT, or GRE, depending on which exam you have taken. You do not need to submit an official score report. You only need to input the numerical scores and sub-score breakdowns.

If your MBA program waived standardized tests for your admission, select "GMAT overall" from the test scores dropdown and write "Test scores waived."

Office Preferences

You will be asked for your top three BCG office preferences. Pick the offices where you would actually want to live and work after graduation. BCG uses these preferences to connect you with consultants and resources in those locations.

You will assign a weight to each preference so that the total adds up to 100%. For example, you might indicate 60% New York, 25% Boston, and 15% Chicago. These preferences are not binding and can be updated later in the recruiting process.

BCG Empower Interest

The BCG Unlock application includes a section where you can indicate interest in BCG Empower. There is no separate application for Empower. Empower participants are selected from the BCG Unlock candidate pool.

BCG Empower is designed for incoming MBA students who want to connect with members of BCG’s Black@BCG, Latin@BCG, and Indigenous@BCG networks. The program includes small group sessions, case preparation workshops, and social events. In 2025, the in-person program was held in Chicago on July 9 through 11, with a virtual option available.

If you are eligible, check the BCG Empower box on the Unlock application and complete the affinity interest form. Whether or not you are invited to or participate in Empower has no impact on your future job applications with BCG.

What Happens After You Apply to BCG Unlock?

After you register for BCG Unlock, there are additional steps depending on which offices you are interested in and whether you indicated interest in BCG Empower.

BCG Consulting Career Assessment (CCA)

Eligible candidates interested in a U.S. or Canadian office will receive an invitation to complete BCG’s Consulting Career Assessment (CCA) after registration. The CCA is a short online exercise that BCG uses to understand how you approach real-world challenges. According to BCG’s FAQ document, it uses industrial and organizational psychology practices and is designed by SHL, a third-party assessment platform.

Here is what you need to know about the CCA:

  • It takes approximately 30 to 35 minutes, including a tutorial and practice questions.

  • You will have 48 hours to complete it after receiving the invitation.

  • The behavioral section is untimed and asks you to rank phrases and answer perception questions. There are no right or wrong answers. Your responses are compared against traits BCG values in its consultants.

  • The logic section gives you 12 minutes to answer 8 questions focused on pattern recognition and reasoning.

  • You can use a calculator. There is no video or camera requirement.

  • You cannot retake the assessment, so plan to complete it in a quiet environment with a reliable internet connection.

No preparation is needed according to BCG, but in my experience, candidates who familiarize themselves with the format ahead of time perform more confidently. Read our full BCG CCA guide for detailed strategies.

One-Way Video Interview (BCG Empower Candidates)

Candidates who indicated interest in BCG Empower may be invited to complete a one-way video interview. This adds a personal dimension to your application and gives BCG a better sense of who you are beyond your resume.

The video interview is conducted through a platform like Spark Hire. BCG will display questions on the screen, and you record your answers one at a time. The process takes 45 to 60 minutes.

Recording yourself on camera is not something most people are naturally comfortable with. Practice beforehand by recording yourself answering common questions and watching the playback. Pay attention to eye contact with the camera, hand gestures, and whether you appear calm and genuine.

Does BCG Unlock Help You Get Hired?

BCG Unlock does not give you a hiring advantage, and participating is not required to get a job at BCG. BCG has stated publicly that participation in Unlock has no impact on your candidacy for future internship or full-time opportunities at the firm.

That said, BCG Unlock provides real strategic value for your recruiting timeline. Based on my experience coaching candidates, the biggest advantage is informational. You will learn what BCG actually values in candidates, hear about real project work, and build relationships with consultants who may later be your interviewers.

BCG’s head of MBA recruiting for North America has said that candidates who come to the process later are not disadvantaged at all. So if you miss the Unlock deadline or can’t attend, don’t panic. There will be plenty of opportunities to connect with BCG during the MBA recruiting season.

How Can You Maximize BCG Unlock for Recruiting?

BCG Unlock is optional and low-pressure, but there are ways to get significantly more value from it than most participants do.

Prepare thoughtful questions in advance. Every Unlock session includes time for Q&A. Asking a specific, well-researched question about BCG’s work or culture makes you memorable. Avoid generic questions like "What’s a typical day like?" Instead, ask about a specific practice area, a recent BCG project you read about, or how a particular office approaches staffing.

Take notes on names and talking points. When you attend sessions, write down the names of BCG consultants who present and anything interesting they share. This gives you material for follow-up emails and for your "Why BCG?" answer in interviews.

Follow up with consultants after sessions. Send a brief LinkedIn message or email to BCG consultants you connected with. Reference something specific from the session. In my experience, roughly 80% of candidates never follow up, so a short, thoughtful note puts you ahead.

Start your case interview preparation early. BCG Unlock runs through the summer, which gives you a natural window to begin studying case interviews before fall recruiting ramps up. Most successful candidates at BCG start preparing at least two to three months before their first interview.

How Does BCG Unlock Compare to Other BCG Programs?

BCG runs several recruiting programs for different candidate types. The table below shows how they differ:

Program

Audience

Format

Application

Impact on Hiring

BCG Unlock

Incoming 2-year MBA students

Virtual, summer

Registration + CCA

None

BCG Empower

Unlock participants (Black, Latino, Indigenous networks)

In-person (Chicago) + virtual

BCG Launch

Undergrads and non-MBA master’s students

Virtual, year-round

Registration

The key difference is that Bridge to BCG is the only program that directly leads to interview invitations. Unlock, Empower, and Launch are all informational and networking programs that do not affect your hiring outcome.

How Should You Prepare for BCG Interviews After Unlock?

After completing BCG Unlock, the next step in your consulting journey is preparing for BCG’s interview process. BCG interviews consist of two types: case interviews and behavioral or fit interviews.

Case Interviews

A case interview is a 20 to 40-minute interview in which you work through a hypothetical business problem and develop a recommendation. BCG uses case interviews because they closely simulate what consultants do on the job. You’ll need problem solving skills, quantitative ability, business judgment, and clear communication.

According to BCG’s own recruiting data, candidates who practice at least 15 to 20 cases before their interviews perform significantly better. Having coached hundreds of candidates, I recommend starting case practice at least 8 weeks before your first interview.

If you want to learn case interviews quickly and save yourself hundreds of hours, check out our case interview course. It walks you through proven strategies that can get you to a top 10% performance level in as little as 7 days.

Behavioral and Fit Interviews

In addition to case interviews, you should prepare for consulting behavioral questions. These questions ask you to share specific examples from your past that demonstrate qualities like leadership, teamwork, and problem solving under pressure.

BCG also asks fit questions to assess your genuine interest in consulting and the firm. You should have clear, specific answers for "Why consulting?" and "Why BCG?" The insights you gain from BCG Unlock sessions can directly strengthen these answers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is BCG Unlock selective?

BCG Unlock is open to all eligible incoming MBA students from the listed schools, and BCG also accepts applications from students at non-listed schools. The core Unlock programming is not selective. However, BCG Empower within Unlock is selective, and only a subset of applicants are invited to participate.

Can I attend BCG Unlock if my school is not on the target list?

Yes. BCG’s careers page states that they welcome applications from any pre-MBA student. If your school is not on the list, use your school email address when registering and make sure your resume clearly demonstrates the qualities BCG values: problem solving, leadership, and impact.

Does attending BCG Unlock guarantee a BCG interview?

No. BCG has confirmed that participation in Unlock has no impact on your candidacy for internship or full-time roles. It is purely an informational and networking program. Your interview invitations will be based on your application and performance during the standard recruiting process.

What is the difference between BCG Unlock and BCG Empower?

BCG Unlock is the broader virtual summer program open to all eligible incoming MBA students. BCG Empower is a more focused, invite-only workshop within Unlock for students connecting with BCG’s Black@BCG, Latin@BCG, and Indigenous@BCG networks. You indicate your interest in Empower through the Unlock application. There is no separate application.

What is the BCG CCA and do I need to prepare for it?

The BCG Consulting Career Assessment (CCA) is a 30-minute online assessment with behavioral questions and logic-based problems. BCG says no preparation is needed, but candidates who understand the format tend to perform more confidently. Read our BCG CCA guide for a full breakdown.

What if I miss the BCG Unlock deadline?

Missing the Unlock deadline does not hurt your chances of getting a BCG offer. BCG’s head of MBA recruiting has said that candidates who come to the process later are not disadvantaged. You will have many other opportunities to engage with BCG during fall on-campus recruiting.
