Key Takeaways

The UK consulting market is led by three strategy firms, four professional services giants, and a deep bench of specialist and British-owned consultancies that most candidate guides skip entirely.

  • McKinsey, BCG, and Bain run large London offices and sit at the top for prestige and exit options

  • The Big 4 hire the most UK graduates by a wide margin, with easier entry and lower pay

  • British firms like PA Consulting, OC&C, and Baringa are strong bets that face far less applicant competition

  • Entry-level MBB base pay in London runs roughly £45,000 to £62,000, well under US levels

  • UK consulting was worth about £21.8bn in 2025, with graduate hiring up 10% year on year

  • Manchester, Edinburgh, Bristol, and Leeds now carry real intakes, so London is not the only door

What Are the Top Consulting Firms in the UK?

The top consulting firms in the UK fall into four groups: McKinsey, BCG, and Bain for pure strategy, Deloitte, PwC, EY, and KPMG for scale, a specialist tier including Oliver Wyman, Kearney, L.E.K., Roland Berger, OC&C, and Accenture, and British-owned firms such as PA Consulting, Baringa, Newton, and Frontier Economics.

That grouping matters more in Britain than people expect. The UK supports a large homegrown consulting sector alongside the global firms, which is something most national markets do not have.

The reason this market can carry so many credible firms is its size. According to the Management Consultancies Association's Annual Industry Report 2026, produced with Oxford Economics, the UK consulting sector was worth roughly £21.8bn in 2025 and firms are forecasting 6% growth in 2026 and 8% in 2027.

Which Firms Make Up the Top Tier of UK Consulting?

MBB is the top tier in the UK exactly as it is everywhere else. McKinsey, BCG, and Bain all run large London offices, and all three treat London as a regional hub rather than a satellite.

What is different in Britain is the mix of work. London teams pull an unusually high share of private equity commercial due diligence, financial services strategy, and central government projects, because the client base sits inside a few square miles of the City and Westminster.

McKinsey & Company

The McKinsey London office is one of the firm's largest in Europe and its main hub for UK public sector, banking, and energy work. Undergraduates enter as Business Analysts, MBAs and advanced degree holders enter as Associates.

McKinsey also runs QuantumBlack out of London, which is where much of the firm's AI and analytics work sits. If you have a technical background, that is often an easier door than the generalist track.

Boston Consulting Group

BCG's London office is one of its largest in Europe and a base for BCG X, its technology build unit. Entry-level undergraduate hires join as Associates and MBA hires join as Consultants.

In my experience interviewing candidates, BCG London leans slightly more creative in its cases than the other two. Interviewers reward a candidate who proposes an unusual angle and then defends it with numbers.

Bain & Company

Bain's London office is heavily concentrated in private equity work, with a large share of staffing going to commercial due diligence for buyout funds. Undergraduates join as Associate Consultants.

Having sat on the other side of the table at Bain London style interviews, the culture screen is real and it is not a formality. Candidates who are technically strong but cannot hold a normal conversation get dinged, every single round.

How Do the Big 4 Consulting Firms Compare in the UK?

The Big 4 consulting practices are the largest graduate employers in UK consulting by a wide margin. Deloitte, PwC, EY, and KPMG each run graduate schemes measured in the hundreds, against intakes in the dozens at MBB.

Each also runs a dedicated strategy arm that competes for the same work MBB chases: Monitor Deloitte, Strategy& at PwC, EY-Parthenon, and KPMG's Strategy Group. Those arms hire separately and screen far harder than the main consulting practice.

  • Deloitte: one of the largest UK consulting practices, with deep technology and public sector benches

  • PwC: strongest in deals, risk, and financial services, with Strategy& as the strategy front door

  • EY: transactions-led, with EY-Parthenon carrying the most prestige of the four strategy arms

  • KPMG: the most audit-adjacent of the four, with strong regulatory and restructuring practices

The honest trade-off is prestige against odds. A Deloitte London offer is meaningfully easier to get than an MBB offer, and it still puts you in front of FTSE 100 clients within your first year.

Which Specialist Strategy Firms Hire in the UK?

The specialist tier sits between MBB and the Big 4, and in London it is unusually deep because so many of these firms were either founded here or built their European business here. These are the tier 2 consulting firms that compete directly with MBB on individual mandates.

Do not treat this tier as a consolation prize. On a retail or consumer diligence, OC&C competes directly against MBB and wins, and in financial services Oliver Wyman is frequently the incumbent.

  • Oliver Wyman: a leading financial services and risk consultancy in London, with a large insurance practice

  • OC&C Strategy Consultants: founded in London in 1987 and the go-to firm for retail and consumer goods strategy

  • L.E.K. Consulting: London-founded, with heavy private equity diligence and life sciences work

  • Kearney: operations, procurement, and supply chain, with a reputation for better hours than MBB

  • Roland Berger: the European strategy house, strongest in automotive, industrials, and transport

  • Accenture: the largest technology consultancy in the UK, with Accenture Strategy as its higher-bar entry point

Restructuring and turnaround is the other specialism London carries better than most markets, because insolvency and distressed work concentrates around the City. AlixPartners, Alvarez & Marsal, Teneo, and FTI Consulting all run substantial London practices, and they pay unusually well at senior levels because bonuses track deal outcomes.

Economic consulting is a separate specialism that London does better than almost anywhere, thanks to the concentration of regulators and competition authorities. Frontier Economics, Charles River Associates, and Analysis Group all recruit heavily here for candidates with economics degrees.

What Are the Best UK-Headquartered Consulting Firms?

Britain has a homegrown consulting sector that most candidate guides ignore, and that gap is your opportunity. These firms pay competitively, do serious work, and receive a fraction of the applications MBB gets.

PA Consulting is the biggest of them. Founded in London in 1943 and now majority owned by Jacobs, PA employs several thousand people and does heavy work in defence, security, energy, and public services.

Baringa, founded in 2000, has become the reference firm for UK energy and utilities strategy at exactly the moment the grid is being rebuilt. If you care about the energy transition, Baringa gives you more of that work per year than any generalist firm will.

  • PA Consulting: innovation and transformation across defence, energy, health, and government

  • Baringa: energy, utilities, and financial services, with deep modelling capability

  • Newton: operational improvement with fees tied to delivered results, heavy in NHS and manufacturing

  • Eden McCallum: a project-based model staffed by independent ex-MBB consultants, so entry is experienced-hire only

  • Elixirr: a London-listed challenger consultancy focused on digital and growth

  • The Berkeley Partnership: small and senior-only, with an independent partner model and no graduate intake

These are also the firms where a non-target degree hurts you least. A candidate from a strong regional university with real sector interest competes far better here than in an MBB pool stacked with Oxbridge and LSE applicants.

How Much Do Consultants Get Paid in the UK?

UK consulting salaries run well below American ones for the same job title, and any guide quoting dollar figures for a London role is misleading you. Reported base pay for entry-level MBB roles in London sits in the £45,000 to £62,000 range, while Big 4 graduate consulting starts closer to £30,000 to £41,000.

Bonuses sit on top and vary far more than base. Reported MBB London bonuses tend to land in the £5,000 to £10,000 range at entry level, which is a much smaller share of total pay than the US signing and performance bonuses candidates read about online.

PwC, EY, and KPMG do not publish graduate consulting bands either, and their reported figures sit close to Deloitte's. If you want the full picture across levels, my breakdown of Big 4 consulting salary data covers each rung from graduate to partner.

Where Are the Top UK Consulting Firms Outside London?

London is not the only option, and treating it that way costs candidates offers every year. The MCA counted 347 consulting offices located outside London in its 2026 report, and firms have been building regional teams deliberately.

Manchester, Edinburgh, Bristol, Leeds, and Birmingham all carry meaningful consulting headcount. The Big 4 run separate regional graduate intakes, and applying to a regional office rather than London is often a genuinely easier route into the same firm.

  • Manchester: a major regional hub, with sizeable Deloitte, PwC, KPMG, EY, and Accenture teams

  • Edinburgh and Glasgow: financial services and public sector work for the Scottish Government

  • Bristol: aerospace, defence, and technology consulting, plus a growing Newton presence

  • Leeds and Birmingham: public sector, health, and infrastructure delivery

MBB is the exception. McKinsey, BCG, and Bain concentrate almost all UK staff in London, so if those three are your target then London is where you apply.

How Do You Get Hired at a Top UK Consulting Firm?

UK hiring runs on the British academic year, which means the calendar is the single most common thing candidates get wrong. Graduate scheme applications typically open over the summer and close between August and November for roles starting the following autumn, and most firms review on a rolling basis.

Rolling review is the part people miss. Applying in the final week before a stated deadline puts you in front of a recruiter who has already filled most of the intake, which is why consulting recruiting in the UK rewards early applicants so heavily.

  1. Apply in the first two weeks: treat the portal opening as the deadline, not the stated cut-off date

  2. Clear the online assessment: McKinsey Solve, BCG's online case, and Bain's test all come before any human sees your CV

  3. Pass first round: usually two case interviews with fit questions mixed in, run in the London office

  4. Pass final round: partner interviews with harder cases and a much heavier emphasis on your motivation and fit

The case interview is what separates candidates who get offers from candidates who get to the final round and stop there. If you want to get case-ready quickly, my case interview course walks you through the strategies I used to evaluate candidates as a Bain interviewer.

There is one more UK-specific detail worth knowing. Firms recruit hardest at Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, Imperial, UCL, Warwick, Durham, and Bristol, but every major firm accepts open online applications, so a non-target degree changes your odds rather than closing the door.

Which UK Firms Are Best for Experienced Hires?

Experienced hiring is a bigger share of UK consulting recruitment than most candidates assume. Experienced professionals made up 37% of new recruits at MCA member firms in 2025, and the same report recorded more than 5,400 new hires across those firms.

That share is driven by client demand for specialist skills rather than generalist strategy. Firms are buying people who already know AI deployment, data engineering, cyber security, or regulated financial services, which changes what a strong lateral CV looks like.

  • Deep sector experience: five years in energy trading or banking regulation beats a generic management track record

  • Technical depth: data, AI, and cyber backgrounds are the fastest-growing entry route into UK consulting

  • Delivery evidence: British firms weigh what you actually shipped more heavily than where you went to university

Moving up a tier is a well-worn path in the UK, and it works. Candidates going from Big 4 to MBB typically apply after two to four years, and the case bar they face is identical to the graduate bar rather than easier.

One warning from the interviewer side. Experienced hires frequently under-prepare for cases because they assume their work record carries the interview, and that assumption ends more lateral applications than any CV weakness.

Do UK Consulting Firms Sponsor Work Visas?

Yes. McKinsey, BCG, Bain, the Big 4, and most large UK consultancies hold Home Office sponsor licences and routinely sponsor international graduates, which makes consulting one of the more accessible sectors for non-UK candidates.

The mechanics matter. Under Skilled Worker visa rules in force since July 2025, the general salary threshold is £41,700 or the going rate for the occupation, whichever is higher, with a reduced new entrant rate of £33,400 for early-career hires.

Read that against the salary table above and the picture is clear. MBB and specialist strategy salaries clear the thresholds comfortably, while some Big 4 graduate consulting bands sit close enough that firms lean on the new entrant rate to sponsor.

Smaller British consultancies are the real constraint. Many hold sponsor licences, but some do not, so confirm sponsorship before you spend weeks preparing for a boutique process.

How Should You Choose Which UK Firms to Target?

There are five things I would weigh, in this order, if I were building an application list from scratch today. Prestige belongs on the list, but it is not first, and candidates who rank it first usually end up with fewer offers.

Tip #1: Apply across at least three tiers

An application list made up only of MBB and Big 4 strategy arms is a list with a very high chance of zero offers. Add specialist firms and two or three British consultancies so a bad interview day does not end your cycle.

Tip #2: Pick the sector before the logo

If you know you want energy work, Baringa gives you more of it than a generalist MBB staffing model will. Firms with a clear sector identity also make your motivation answer far easier to write.

Tip #3: Weigh what happens after two years

MBB's advantage over the rest is largest at the exit, not on day one. If your goal is a UK private equity fund or a corporate strategy team, MBB exit opportunities are still the widest available.

Tip #4: Check the office, not the firm

A firm's global reputation tells you very little about what its UK office actually does. Look at the last two years of UK case studies and press coverage before deciding a firm is a fit.

Tip #5: Be honest about the hours

Private equity diligence teams work brutal hours because deal timelines are brutal, and no culture deck changes that. Firms with steadier project rhythms exist, and choosing one is a legitimate decision rather than a lack of ambition.

Picking from the top consulting firms in the UK comes down to matching the tier and sector to what you actually want, then applying earlier than you think you need to. Build a list across three tiers, get your CV finished before the portals open in the summer, and start case practice well before your first online assessment lands.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the top consulting firms in the UK?

The top consulting firms in the UK are McKinsey, BCG, and Bain for pure strategy, Deloitte, PwC, EY, and KPMG for scale and volume hiring, and a tier of specialist firms including Oliver Wyman, Kearney, L.E.K., Roland Berger, OC&C, and Accenture. British firms such as PA Consulting, Baringa, and Newton round out the list.

Which consulting firm pays the most in the UK?

McKinsey, BCG, and Bain pay the most at entry level in the UK. Glassdoor UK data from 2026 puts reported London base salaries for their undergraduate roles between roughly £45,000 and £62,000, ahead of Big 4 graduate consulting bands. Restructuring and economic consulting firms can match or beat MBB at senior levels because of deal-linked bonuses.

Do you need to go to Oxbridge to get into consulting in the UK?

No. Oxford, Cambridge, and LSE account for a large share of MBB pre-experience hires in the UK, but every major firm accepts open online applications from any university. Target schools are where firms recruit hardest, not a hard gate on who gets an offer.

Is it easier to get into consulting in the UK than the US?

Not meaningfully. Offer rates at the top UK firms sit in the low single digits, the same as the US. The bigger difference is timing, because UK graduate schemes open in the summer and close between August and November, months before many US deadlines.

Do UK consulting firms sponsor work visas?

Yes. McKinsey, BCG, Bain, the Big 4, and most large UK consultancies hold Home Office sponsor licences and sponsor graduate hires. Under rules in force since July 2025, the general Skilled Worker salary threshold is £41,700, with a new entrant rate of £33,400 that most graduate consulting salaries clear.

What is the biggest consulting firm in the UK?

Deloitte and Accenture are among the largest consulting employers in the UK by headcount and revenue, though firms do not publish directly comparable UK consulting figures. The Management Consultancies Association put the whole UK sector at roughly £21.8bn in 2025, with large firms generating 77% of total fee income.
