In my experience at Bain, interviewers evaluate four things during a case: structured thinking, quantitative skills, business judgment, and communication. You do not need the right answer. You need a logical approach and clear reasoning.
Case interviews require significant practice. It is extremely unlikely you will do well without practicing at least 5 to 20 cases beforehand. To give yourself the best chance of getting an offer, focus on five areas: your resume, behavioral prep, your Deloitte story, case interview practice (if applicable), and networking. Here is how to approach each one.
1. Perfect Your Resume
Your resume determines whether you get an interview. Dedicate at least a few days to refining it and get feedback from peers, your school's career center, or consultants in your network.
The biggest mistakes I see from freshman and sophomore applicants are vague bullets without numbers, generic descriptions that could apply to anyone, and resumes longer than one page. Every bullet should start with an action verb and include a quantified result.
2. Prepare 6 to 8 Behavioral Stories in Advance
Do not try to come up with stories on the spot. Before your interview, prepare 6 to 8 diverse stories that collectively cover leadership, teamwork, problem solving, resilience, communication, and integrity.
Choose only your most impressive and impactful experiences. When telling the story, use the STAR method and keep the Situation and Task brief. If you are targeting the Consulting service line, start practicing case interviews as early as possible. Unlike behavioral questions, case interviews are a skill that improves only with repeated practice. Plan to complete at least 10 to 15 practice cases before your interview.
Start by practicing 3 to 5 cases on your own to get comfortable with the structure and math. Then find a case partner to simulate the real experience. Focus on building custom frameworks rather than memorizing generic ones, and always tie your analysis back to the case objective.
