The MBB interview process has five stages: the resume screen, an online assessment, first round interviews, final round interviews, and the offer decision, and it takes 4 to 8 weeks while cutting more than 99% of applicants. This guide walks through what happens at each stage, how McKinsey, BCG, and Bain run the same skeleton in three different ways, and what actually gets you past each cut.

Key Takeaways
All three MBB firms run the same five-stage process, but each one uses a different online assessment, a different case style, and a different name for its behavioral interview.
- Roughly 90% of applicants are cut at the resume screen, before anyone watches you solve a case
- Each firm gates interviews with its own test: Solve at McKinsey, the Consulting Career Assessment and Online Case at BCG, and Sova or TestGorilla at Bain
- You will solve 4 to 6 cases across two rounds, and every one of them is paired with behavioral questions
- McKinsey runs interviewer-led cases, BCG runs candidate-led cases, and Bain has moved many offices toward interviewer-led
- Of the candidates who reach a final round, 15% to 30% get an offer, so no single interview can go badly
What Is the MBB Interview Process?
The MBB interview process is the five-stage hiring sequence used by McKinsey, BCG, and Bain: resume screen, online assessment, first round interviews, final round interviews, and offer. It takes 4 to 8 weeks and includes 4 to 6 case interviews, each paired with behavioral questions. Fewer than 1% of applicants receive an offer.
MBB stands for McKinsey, Boston Consulting Group, and Bain, the three firms that sit at the top of the management consulting market. Their hiring processes look nearly identical from the outside, which is why so many candidates prepare for all three at once. The differences that matter are buried inside each stage, and missing them is how strong candidates get eliminated.
Stage |
What happens |
Typical timeline |
What gets you cut |
1. Resume screen |
Recruiters review your resume, cover letter, and office preferences |
1 to 3 weeks after the deadline |
Responsibilities instead of quantified results, a weak academic record, no leadership evidence |
2. Online assessment |
A timed digital test or game that varies by firm and office |
30 to 70 minutes, due within days |
Slow or careless quantitative work, missing the completion deadline |
3. First round |
Two interviews with consultants and managers, each a case plus behavioral questions |
40 to 60 minutes each |
Generic frameworks, math errors, rambling communication |
4. Final round |
Two to three interviews with partners, sometimes including a written case |
40 to 60 minutes each |
Thin behavioral stories, no real reason for choosing that firm or office |
5. Offer |
Interviewers debrief, then a recruiter calls before the written offer arrives |
Same day to 1 week |
Nothing, though a split decision among interviewers can end in a rejection |
How Long Does the MBB Interview Process Take?
Plan for 4 to 8 weeks from the day you apply to the day you hear a decision. Based on 2026 Glassdoor data, the average is roughly 40 days at McKinsey, 32 days at BCG, and 26 days at Bain. Bain moves fastest because it has the shortest pre-interview sequence.
Two things stretch that window. On-campus recruiting at MBB target schools compresses it, since interview dates are locked in months ahead and everyone is processed as a batch. Experienced hire timelines do the opposite and can run two or three months because there is no fixed calendar to hold the office accountable.
Expect about two weeks of silence between each major step. If two weeks pass with no word, email your recruiter. When I worked in recruiting at Bain, a polite check-in never hurt a candidate and occasionally surfaced an application that had stalled in someone's inbox.
What Are Your Odds at Each Stage of the MBB Process?
The resume screen is the largest single cut in the entire process. Roughly 9 in 10 applicants are eliminated there, which means most people never get evaluated on the thing they spent months preparing for. Survive that, and your odds improve at every subsequent stage.
Here is the math on an illustrative pool of 1,000 applicants to a single office. About 100 clear the resume screen. Somewhere between 40 and 60 pass the online assessment and reach first round interviews.
From there, 10 to 25 advance to the final round, and 3 to 6 walk away with an offer. Those numbers are rounded for illustration, but the shape is accurate: the funnel narrows hardest at the front, not at the end. That is why candidates who obsess over case practice while sending out a mediocre resume tend to get nowhere.
How Does the MBB Interview Process Differ at McKinsey, BCG, and Bain?
The three firms share a five-stage skeleton but differ on four things that change how you prepare: the online assessment, the case format, the behavioral interview, and whether a written case appears in the final round. Preparing for one firm gets you roughly 80% of the way to the others. The last 20% is where offers are won and lost.

One difference that surprises candidates: BCG publishes its interview stage names openly. Its careers site lists a Skills Interview, a Case Interview, and a Team Interview, which tells you that experience and communication are scored separately from problem solving rather than treated as a warm-up.
How Does the MBB Application and Resume Screen Work?
You apply through each firm's careers portal with a resume, an optional cover letter, office preferences, and sometimes a transcript. A recruiter or a screening tool reviews the file, and about 90% of applications end there. This is the stage where preparation pays off most and the one candidates underinvest in most.
What Do MBB Recruiters Look For on Your Resume?
Recruiters scan for four signals: academic performance, brand-name schools or employers, leadership, and quantified impact. A 3.5 GPA is the rough benchmark at all three firms, though a lower GPA can be offset by a standout work record or an unusual accomplishment.
The single most common failure I see on a consulting resume is describing duties rather than outcomes. "Supported the marketing team" tells a recruiter nothing. "Cut campaign acquisition cost 22% by reallocating spend across four channels" tells them you think like a consultant already.
Keep it to one page. Put a number in nearly every bullet. If your applications keep going quiet, my resume review service includes unlimited revisions with 24-hour turnaround.
Do You Need a Referral to Get an MBB Interview?
No, but a consulting referral meaningfully improves the odds your application gets a careful read instead of a skim. A current employee submits your name and resume directly to the recruiting team, which flags the file for closer attention. It does not guarantee an interview and it never rescues a weak resume.
Referrals matter most if you attend a non-target school or apply as an experienced hire. At target schools, recruiters already have a relationship with your career office and will review your resume regardless. Outside that pipeline, a referral is often the difference between being read and being filtered.
All three firms have shifted weight toward objective assessment scores over the past few years. Networking still helps you get seen, but it will not carry you through an online assessment or a case.
When Should You Apply to MBB?
Apply on the first deadline, not the last. MBB recruiting has accelerated sharply, and undergraduate internship applications now open as early as January for internships that start 18 months later. Missing a window usually means waiting a full year.
Bain and BCG review applications in batches after each deadline closes, while some offices work on a rolling basis. When I sat in Bain application reviews, the candidates who applied by the first deadline were seen while reviewers were still fresh and interview slots were still open. The MBB application deadlines shift every cycle, so confirm the current dates before you plan your prep timeline.
Work backward from the deadline. Start case and resume preparation 3 to 6 months before applications open, because once the invitation arrives you often have only one to two weeks before your assessment is due.
What Online Assessments Does Each MBB Firm Use?
Every MBB firm now gates live interviews behind at least one digital assessment, and each uses a different one. These tests eliminate a large share of candidates who cleared the resume screen, which makes them the most underestimated stage in the process. The formats also vary by office, so read your invitation email carefully rather than assuming.
What Is the McKinsey Solve Assessment?
The McKinsey Solve assessment is a gamified test that runs about 60 to 70 minutes and replaced the old Problem Solving Test. As of 2026 it draws from three modules: Ecosystem Building, Redrock Study, and Sea Wolf. Most candidates complete two of the three in one sitting.
McKinsey scores both your answers and your approach, so the software records the sequence of decisions you make, not just the outcome. On its interviewing page, McKinsey says no preparation is needed and encourages candidates to approach Solve with curiosity.
My advice differs slightly. Candidates who understand the mechanics before they start waste less time reading instructions under a clock, and the Redrock module in particular rewards fast, accurate arithmetic. Block out 90 uninterrupted minutes, since the game cannot be paused once it begins.
What Online Assessments Does BCG Use?
BCG uses more assessment formats than the other two firms combined, and which one you get depends on your office and role. Most candidates now face two screens before any live interview.
-
Consulting Career Assessment: a roughly 30-minute test combining behavioral profiling with a short timed reasoning section
-
Online Case: a 25 to 30 minute case delivered through a chatbot, ending with a one-minute recorded video recommendation
-
Pymetrics: a set of neuroscience-based games measuring risk tolerance, attention, and decision-making patterns
- One-way video interview: 3 to 5 recorded answers to preset behavioral and motivational questions, used mainly by European and Asian offices
The Consulting Career Assessment is behavioral for most of its length, which lulls candidates into treating it as a formality before the timed math section arrives. Answer the personality items consistently rather than trying to guess a profile.
The BCG Online Case is the one that actually filters people out. It is a real case compressed into a chat window with no interviewer to give you hints, so practice reading charts quickly and doing percentage math without hesitating.
What Is the Bain Digital Assessment?
Bain sends either Sova or TestGorilla, and you find out which one by email after you submit your application. According to Bain's digital assessment hub, the test takes approximately 30 to 40 minutes and candidates in some markets receive their personalized link within one week of applying.
Three rules on that page catch candidates off guard every cycle. A calculator is allowed on the digital assessment but explicitly not in any interview that follows. TestGorilla must be completed in one sitting, while Sova can be finished in sections before the deadline.
Bain also states that applications will not be considered if a required assessment is not completed by the deadline, and that candidates can expect to hear back within 60 days. Treat the deadline as absolute, because there is no appeals process for a missed link.
Can You Use AI During MBB Assessments and Interviews?
Use AI to prepare and never during the process itself. McKinsey publishes an explicit table on its interviewing page: polishing your resume and practicing questions are encouraged, while generating real-time answers during an interview or using AI during assessments is not allowed.
Bain goes further on its assessment page, prohibiting recording, screenshots, and any software that transcribes or provides feedback while you take the test. McKinsey asks candidates to disable installed AI note-taking tools before virtual interviews and to turn off virtual backgrounds and blurring.
The practical read is that firms have accepted AI as a preparation tool and drawn a hard line at the assessment itself. Getting caught is an immediate rejection, and it is not a risk worth taking for a marginal edge on a 30-minute test.
What Happens in MBB First Round Interviews?
First round interviews at all three firms consist of two sessions of 40 to 60 minutes each, usually back to back on the same day. Your interviewers are consultants, managers, or project leaders with 2 to 6 years at the firm. Each session pairs a case with behavioral questions, and reported pass rates run from roughly 10% to 50% depending on the firm and office.
The split inside each session is fairly consistent: 25 to 35 minutes of case, 10 to 15 minutes of behavioral questions, and a few minutes for your questions at the end. Interviewers score you independently and both must be positive. One strong session and one weak one usually ends the process.
How Do MBB Case Interviews Differ by Firm?
The MBB case interview is the same exercise everywhere: you take a business problem, structure it, work the numbers, and deliver a recommendation. Who steers the conversation is what changes.
- McKinsey: interviewer-led, so you answer a defined sequence of questions and your job is to be sharp on each one rather than to set the agenda
- BCG: candidate-led, so you decide what to investigate, request the data you want, and drive toward the answer yourself
- Bain: a hybrid that has moved toward interviewer-led standardized cases, often with a main question and several sub-questions given upfront
Bain cases lean more quantitative than the other two, and market sizing shows up regularly for junior roles. BCG weights creativity heavily, so a memorized framework from a prep book stands out for the wrong reasons. McKinsey publishes four full practice cases on its careers site, and working through Beautify, Diconsa, Electro-Light, and Talbot Trucks is the best free preparation available for its format.
Whatever the format, drill your case interview math until it is automatic, since no MBB firm allows a calculator in a live case. If you want a structured path through every case type, my case interview course covers the frameworks and drills in as little as 7 days.
What Behavioral Questions Do MBB Firms Ask?
All three firms test the same underlying traits and package them completely differently. Getting this wrong is the most common reason a strong case performer still gets rejected.
McKinsey runs the Personal Experience Interview, which takes one story and drills it for 10 to 15 minutes with follow-up after follow-up. McKinsey recommends preparing two examples for each of its four themes, which means eight stories total. Expect to be asked why you made each decision, what pushback you faced, and what you would do differently.
Bain calls its version the Experience Interview and asks several shorter questions instead of one deep one, so you need breadth rather than depth. BCG embeds fit questions in every round and formally separates them into a Skills Interview that examines your experience and motivation.
Structure every answer with the STAR method and spend most of your time on your actions and results. Say "I" rather than "we," since interviewers are scoring your individual contribution. My fit interview course covers 98% of the questions you could be asked in a few hours.
What Happens in MBB Final Round Interviews?
Final rounds consist of two to three interviews of 40 to 60 minutes each, run by partners and senior managers rather than consultants. The question types are the same as the first round, but the cases get more conversational and the behavioral probing gets harder. Between 15% and 30% of candidates who reach this stage receive an offer.
The evaluation question shifts at this level. First round interviewers ask whether you can solve a case. Partners ask whether they would put you in front of a client next month.
Your final round interviewers often read the notes from your first round. If you fumbled a calculation or gave a shallow structure, expect to be tested on exactly that weakness again. Sharpening the specific thing that went badly is the highest-return preparation you can do between rounds.
What Is the MBB Written Case?
Some Bain and BCG offices add a written case to the final round, most commonly in the US and UK. You receive a packet of data and slides, get roughly 90 minutes to build a recommendation, then present and defend it for about 30 minutes. McKinsey does not use this format.
The skill being tested is prioritization, not analysis. You will always receive more data than you can process in the time allowed, so the candidates who succeed decide within the first ten minutes what they will ignore. Build two or three counterarguments to your own recommendation before you present, because the interviewer will push back.
How Do MBB Firms Decide Who Gets an Offer?
After your final round interviews, every interviewer submits a written evaluation and then meets to debrief. There is no separate hiring committee at the entry level. The people who interviewed you decide, and a strong advocate in that room matters enormously.
In my time on the Bain side of the table, split decisions almost always went against the candidate. Two enthusiastic yeses and one lukewarm maybe usually became a rejection, because nobody wanted to argue for someone they were unsure about. Consistency across all your interviews beats one brilliant performance and one mediocre one.
Bain's careers site notes that it gives every candidate for a role the same questions to reduce bias, which is a useful signal about how standardized these evaluations have become. Your score is compared against a rubric, not against the person interviewed before you.
What Happens After Your MBB Final Round Interview?
Recruiters call with good news before the written offer arrives by email. Some candidates hear the same day, most hear within a few days, and a week of silence does not mean rejection. Firms frequently finish interviewing other candidates before finalizing decisions.
An MBB offer includes base salary, a performance bonus, a signing bonus for most MBA and experienced hires, and relocation support where relevant. There is almost no room to negotiate entry-level compensation, because MBB salaries are standardized by role and office. Based on 2026 Glassdoor data from over 1,800 reported salaries, McKinsey Business Analysts in the US average about $107,000 in base pay.
How Long Do You Have to Accept an MBB Offer?
Expect 2 to 4 weeks to decide, though the window varies by office and candidate type. If you have a deadline from one firm while another is still interviewing you, tell the second recruiter immediately and say so plainly.
MBB firms accelerate timelines for candidates they want. I have seen a full final round scheduled inside 72 hours because a candidate had a competing offer expiring that Friday. Recruiters would rather compress a calendar than lose someone to a rival.
How Should You Prepare for the MBB Interview Process?
Preparation should mirror the funnel. Spend the most effort where the most people get cut, which means the resume comes first and the final round polish comes last. Here are the six things that move the needle most, drawn from over 10 years of coaching candidates into these firms.
Tip #1: Fix your resume before you touch a single case
Nine of ten applicants die at the screen, so a week spent rewriting your bullets returns more than a month of case practice. Quantify every line and cut anything that reads as a job description.
Tip #2: Practice all three case formats, not just one
Candidates who only drill candidate-led cases freeze when a McKinsey interviewer starts firing defined questions at them. Run at least a third of your practice cases in the interviewer-led format so both feel familiar.
Tip #3: Build your behavioral stories before your first interview invitation
You need eight stories for McKinsey and five to six flexible ones for Bain and BCG. Writing them under time pressure the night before an interview produces vague answers that collapse under follow-up questions.
Tip #4: Do timed math drills daily, not weekly
Every assessment and every live case is scored partly on quantitative speed under pressure, and no MBB interview allows a calculator. Ten focused minutes a day for a month beats a single long session.
Tip #5: Get real feedback instead of practicing alone
Solo practice hides the flaws interviewers actually notice: unclear communication, weak signposting, and structures that sound tailored but are not. Case with a partner at least eight to ten times, and spend 15 minutes on feedback after each one. If you want targeted feedback fast, my 1-on-1 coaching works about 5x faster than practicing solo.
Tip #6: Prepare a real answer for the office question
Partners ask why you want that specific office, and "it seemed less competitive" is a visible answer even when unspoken. Have three genuine reasons, personal or professional, for the city you applied to.
What Happens If MBB Rejects You?
Expect a cooloff period of 12 to 18 months before you can reapply to the same firm after an interview-stage rejection. Candidates screened out at the resume stage sometimes reapply to a different office sooner, though policies vary by region. A rejection at one MBB firm does not affect your candidacy at the other two.
When you reapply, firms want evidence that something in your profile has changed. An MBA, a promotion, a move to a brand-name employer, or a demonstrably stronger analytical track record all qualify. Reapplying with the same resume and the same preparation produces the same outcome.
The MBB interview process rewards candidates who prepare for the whole funnel rather than just the part they find interesting. Start by rewriting your resume so it survives the screen that eliminates nine out of ten applicants, then work backward from your target deadline with three to six months of case and behavioral practice.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many rounds of interviews does MBB have?
McKinsey, BCG, and Bain all run two rounds of live interviews. The first round has two interviews and the final round has two to three. Each interview pairs a case with behavioral questions, so you face 4 to 6 cases in total. Online assessments and a recruiter screen sit before the first round and are not counted as rounds.
How long does the MBB interview process take?
The MBB interview process takes 4 to 8 weeks from application to offer. Based on 2026 Glassdoor data, the average is about 40 days at McKinsey, 32 days at BCG, and 26 days at Bain. On-campus recruiting moves faster because interview dates are fixed in advance, while experienced hire timelines stretch longer.
What is the MBB acceptance rate?
All three MBB firms accept roughly 1% of applicants or fewer. Around 90% of candidates are eliminated at the resume screen alone. Of the candidates who reach final round interviews, 15% to 30% receive an offer depending on the firm and the office.
How many case interviews do you get at MBB?
You will solve 4 to 6 case interviews across both rounds at each MBB firm. That is two cases in the first round and two to three in the final round. Each case runs 25 to 40 minutes inside a 40 to 60 minute interview slot, with the remaining time given to behavioral questions and your own questions.
Can you interview at McKinsey, BCG, and Bain at the same time?
Yes, and most serious candidates apply to all three. The firms recruit on overlapping calendars, so your rounds will often land within the same two or three weeks. If one firm gives you a deadline before another has finished interviewing, tell the second recruiter immediately because MBB firms routinely accelerate a timeline to keep a candidate in play.
Can you use AI to prepare for MBB interviews?
Yes for preparation, no during the process itself. McKinsey states that using AI to polish your resume or practice questions is encouraged, while generating real-time answers in an interview or using AI during assessments is not allowed. Bain prohibits AI tools during its digital assessment, including screenshots, recording, and any software that transcribes or gives feedback.
